I was backing out of my driveway pressed the brake pedal which went all the way to the floor. i pumped the pedal softly, came to a stop and pulled back up to my house without incident. opened the hood and noticed the brake reservoir was very low, but no leaks around the master cylinder. i looked under the truck and noticed a large puddle of brake fluid under the drivers door. the brake lines { 4 in a plastic clamp on the frame} were all wet and rusted. a line or lines had ruptured under just normal braking and very luckily in my driveway. the rupture seems to be a line inside the plastic clamp mounted to the frame of the truck. *tr

The abs and parking break lights come on at random. there is noise from the front tires when you make a turn, the breaks i would assume. the break pad have been changed. the gas light flips back and forth from full to empty, have to use the milage to know when to get gas. and the gas petal sticks, not good in traffic.

I am filing a complaint about chevrolets faulty abs system. i have experienced several times where when hitting the brakes, they will lock up and i loose all break-power. this is an issue that highly concerns me due to the fact that there has been several incidences that have caused drivers to be the cause of an accident. i have done a lot of research on this issue and apperently i am not the only chevy owner with that problem. gm needs to recall their abs system before someone seriously gets injured

Anti-lock braking system is activating more and more often on dry pavement. only activates when vehicle is almost stopped. this does seem to add to stopping distance.

I have recently experienced the anti-lock brake problems that all of the gm trucks/suvs have been experiencing. when i would attempt to stop the anti-lock brake would activate on dry pavement and in good weather, causing me to roll forward past the point of where i intended to stop. this happened dozens of times before i was able to have it services by the dealer, at times making me roll into traffic at stop signs and almost rear end vehicles stopping in front of me. the dealer fixed the problem on the second attempt, the first time they attempted cleaning a sensor contact, before finally replacing the entire sensor unit. i had to pay out of pocket as it is a 2001 chevy silverado 1500 with 80,000 miles.
04/21/2005580002
2001 silverado pickup i have had two near miss incidents. both involve my anti-lock breaks activating at low speed as i approach stop signs or red lights. all the sudden my breaks start pulsing and the truck will not stop. one time i had to veer onto the curb to avoid hitting the car in front of me. the last time my truck actually rolled in front of an oncoming semi truck. luckly the truck was able to swerve and miss me. i approached the dealership today in person (may 4, 2004) and they flat out denied that they had a problem. the refuesed to acknowledge a safety concern and told me if you want us to look at it we can, but we will have to charge you.

At slow speed, just before stopping, brake pedal goes half way to floor and i get a ratching sound and feeling in the pedal. this has been going on for a month or so and it seems to be getting harder to stop. i think it has something to do with the abs system. i had no problem stopping on vehicles before the abs was introduced. i think it is a safety hazard, rather than eliminates one.*ak

No specific events leading up to failure. 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500 ext cab pickup. abs kicks on everytime you try to stop. it occurs at low speeds on dry pavement (ex. kicks in when pulling into parking space and it effects stopping time & distance and feels like i'm not going to stop in time before hitting the vehicle in front of me). the feeling of not being able to stop in time is a very uncomfortable feeling!! i have not had this repaired yet, but i really believe that the manufacturer should be responsible for this fix. i need to get this fixed soon, before somebody does get hurt or damage does occur.*ak

When applying anti lock brakes, they failed. also, power steering wouldn't work when coming to a stop and trying to turn. took truck back numerous of times to the dealership, and they checked the truck, and said they couldn't find anything wrong with the truck. called manufacturer about the the problem, and manufacturer called the service manager. service manager told him to take his truck to another dealership. he traded a 2000, chevrolet silverado for a 2001 chevrolet silverado and still having the same problem. tallked to several other people who had the same truck, and they were having similar problems. had an accident on the the 2001 truck when the brakes wouldn't catch and hit an embankment, causing $1100.00 worth of damage. no one was hurt. 2000 chevrolet silverado p/u, 4 w/d vin#: 2gcek19v2y1119463; 22,826 miles; 2001 chevrolet silverado p//u 4 w/d vin#:1gcek19tx1e155517; 50,000 miles. *ak

I recently came to a stop sign and could not stop the truck. as i crossed the intersection i thought i was going to die! fortunatly, the driver from the other vehicle was alert and avoided what could have been a serious situation. the abs started to pulse under dry conditions when the truck slowed down to less than 5mph, but continued to roll for another 20-30 feet before it came to a stop. abs should be a safety feature - not an unreliable device that can get someone killed. my truck is over 36,000 miles so it is no longer under warranty. i am told that it will cost somewhere between $500 -$1000 to fix, but there was no guarantee that this would not happen again. at this time i have pulled the abs 60a fuse and i feel much safer without the gm abs system. this is a serious gm problem and i can't believe that there isn't a fix, recall, or consumer notification. i won't believe this is the first time this has happen, since the service managers are familiar with this problem. after pulling the abs fuse, i don't like the abs and brake indicators lite up on my instrument panel. i would like to disable the abs, so that the lights no longer light up on my panel. can someone please send me instructions on how to disable the abs properly.*ak

Was driving home in my occasional-use 2001 chevy silverado. brakes became very soft, so i drove extremely slow. finally lost brakes completely upon pulling back into home driveway. hydraulic fluid leak was evident at a rusted-through brake line, between brake distribution module and rear axle. entire brake line system needs immediate replacement. the amount of corrosion that has appeared on the brake lines is actually pretty frightening. it's hard to believe entire families are driving around ny and new england with these rusted out brake systems. bought the truck as a used vehicle in 2009, and the under-frame looked acceptable at the time. a warm adirondack winter seems to have left us with a lot of saltwater on the roads, which seemed to cause worse than normal corrosion. i can understand an eleven year old new england truck being rusty - but the brake lines should never corrode - and yet, the brake lines seem to be the rustiest part on this gm truck. there needs to be higher standards for brake lines. cheap, uncoated steel is unacceptable with modern, safe engineering standards.

While moving at slow speed in stop and go traffic, sometimes without any warning brakes will not stop truck. when pedal is released and stepped on again pedal is hard and there are no brakes period after a few seconds brakes will come back and stop the vehicle. also on dry pavement at speeds under 5 miles per hour while applying steady pressure on brake pedal anti-lock brakes engage when there is no wheel slippage. if the car in front of you stops suddenly and you step on the brakes in a panic stop you may or may not have brakes. vehicle in question has less than 40,000 miles and other than recall for the brakes has had nothing done to the brakes. it has been doing this for the last 2 years. the brake pads have been examined by myself and are worn very little. after i took the truck in brake recall, i have often wondered if the dealer in kentucky did anything to the brakes at all. brakes on this vehicle have gradually gotten worse over time. *tr

#1 2001 silverado when stopping gradually once i slow to less than 10 mph the antilock brake system kicks in causing it to take a much greater distance to stop than what it normally takes. when i asked my dealer about this they said that they haven't heard of this problem. however while doing some research on the internet i've found a huge amount of complaints about this. #2 with about 40000 miles on my truck the rear brakes started making some noise, so i pulled the wheels off to have a look and found that both rear rotors were chewed up beyond being serviceable. when i took the brakes apart i found that the brake pads still had plenty of material on them but they just destroyed the rotors as if the rotors were made out of a steel that was too soft. so $350.00 for just the parts is what this cost me. i spoke to my local dealer about this and they told me that they haven't heard of this before. again when i looked on the internet i found a bunch of complaints of the same thing. *nm

We purchased our 2001 chevy silverado 3500 diesel dually truck in february of 2006. in may of 2006 we started having trouble with our brakes. when we were coming to a complete stop our brakes would give a little (like the abs were kicking in). we took our truck to a chevy dealer and they informed us it was our right front wheel speed sensor and the hub assembly. the cost would be $535 to replace the right front hub assembly and the brake stop switch. in investigating online we realized this was a very common problem and that there had been a recall on the speed sensor. in talking with the investigator with the nhtsa they informed me that the recall is only for the speed sensor and not for the hub assembly which contains the speed sensor. we currently have it in the shop and will be getting the old parts when we pick up the truck. thank goodness that we were able to get it into the shop before we were injured in an accident like so many others or we injured someone else. i am very upset that gm is not taking more responsibility. i don't know much about trucks but i would assume something that contains an item that has been recalled would cause the whole thing to be damaged if left long enough. we did not know of the recall until after the truck was in the shop. i hope that gm realizes their mistakes and that i will recieve some compensation from them. we use our truck to do disaster response full time through a church organization and rely on the truck all of the time. we can not afford to be worrying if our brakes would hold up. i have always been a fan of chevys but now i am unsure of our safety. *nm

From november, 2004 until fixed in march, 2005 had repetitive episodes where anti-lock brakes came on at low speeds of around 7-8 mph. this led to several very near accidents on the military base i work, parking lots and on the city roads. luckily no one was ultimately injured before the problem was figured out to be the anti-lock brake system sensors. they were fixed by dealer at price of $598.40. a recall was released on this problem in canada and in the us (gm recall 05068) in december, 2005. this vehicle was purchased from o'connor chevrolet in rochester, ny in november, 2003. a claim was filed with chevrolet (file #1-409354542) and was denied because the vehicle was not purchased by me in canada and i didn't live in canada. this vehicle was purchased from a chevrolet dealer in new york state with a now known defect that nearly caused several accidents to me and my family and now chevrolet will not pay for the repair stating it is not covered by the us recall. if it is the same defect in all the vehicles and the truck was purchased from a chevy dealer it should be honored. chevy nearly killed me and my kids several time by their negligence in manufacturing and should pay for the repair needed to fix their faulty product. *jb

Copy of email sent to gm: i recently contacted a local dealer concerned about my abs system engaging at low speeds. he notified me that there was in fact a recall on the truck in canada and certain states in the us for corrosion problems around the abs speed sensor. he also informed me that he could not perform the recall since the truck was built and initially sold in canada. he then gave me gm 800 number to call, which i did (ref#1-409390276). she also informed me that my only option was to have the dealer perform the necessary recall and then submit the receipts to gm for possible reimbursement. i have since removed the abs fuse from my truck and am currently driving the truck with this feature disabled to prevent from hitting someone or something. i plan to replace the front brakes and rotor soon and i'll see if i can clear the debris problem myself. i sat and tallied the cars i've owned the last 30 years and came up with 6 different cars/trucks. as far as a historical reference this truck has been pretty good as far as typical american vehicles go. i've only had to replace the abs modulator ($1000), the rear brakes and rotors ($200 my repair), and the driver side door window drive mechanism ($200). all this with less than 60000 miles on the vehicle. there's been a severe draft on the passenger side since i bought the truck (bought one year old with 20k miles). hmmmmm. i wonder why my other two vehicles are toyota camry's and my next truck will probably be a toyota as well. thanks for the memories. jeff. *nm

2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd extended cab 4x4. abs activation at low speed. dealer said my truck was not covered, but i had the exact same problem as the current abs recall #04094. dealer informed me that repairs would entail replacing hub and would cost $507.00. i will conduct the recommended service procedure as per the recall myself. there is a problem with 2500 hd pickups of the same or similar nature to the existing recall. it is a somewhat dangerous condition, and right at the moment i have disabled the abs until i have fixed it. it happens pretty much constantly at slow controlled stops. *jb

Our 2001 chevy silverado 2500hd diesel 2wd pickup truck consistently experience false activation of the abs on the drivers side front wheel at about 5 mph, causing the vehicle to be hard to stop and causing it to pull to the right. this has been happening since march 2005. we have had several near crashes because of this problem. we understand this problem is addressed by recall campaign 05v379000, but we never received a recall notice from gm. when we contacted gm about this recall, we were told that it is vin specific, and that our vin is not included. we were advised that we should take our vehicle to a gm dealer and pay for its diagnosis. if the dealer and gm agree that this problem should be fixed under recall 05v379000, then gm might reimburse us for the repairs. we do not think we should have to pay for diagnosis and repairs for a problem that gm is aware of and has issued a major recall. we believe that gm has omitted some smaller classes of vehicles to reduce its cost of this recall. *jb

I have a 2001 chevrolet silverado vin #1gcek19t91e158201. i am experiencing an abs activation when applying the brakes at slow speeds. there is no abs light that goes on, but i can feel and here the abs activating. this is causing a greater stopping distance that is hard to estimate. this has caused me to come very close to hitting other vehicles, and people. this problem started roughly in november, and continues everytime the truck is used. i cannot give an accurate number of times this has happened, but it would be more than 50 times. please help me. the dealer tells me there is a recall for these trucks, but when i call chevy, they tell me my truck is not included. this truck was just purchased from a dealer that took it in as a trade. the previous owner lived in michigan with this truck until trading it in here in wisconsin (also in the salt belt). i would like to have this safety problem addressed by gm. *jb

2001 silverado abs brakes kept applying at slow speeds while rolling to a stop. applying after hitting a bump prior to stop. while getting gas one day i went to change lanes in the gas pump area, while barely moving the abs pump started running and it took both feet and both hands holding onto the steering wheel to push down the brake pedal.the truck is 6000 mi. out of warantee so i disconected the abs fuse (mainly because i never had any faith in the abs system anyway)but this was the last straw.i am disapointed that a truck with such low milage would have such a poor braking system.i relate this to you as it sounds like the problem described on the news and thought it might be important.

 (1) on saturday march 5th, 2005 we were pulling my 2001 chevrolet exteneded cab 4x4 out of the mud. (2) the failure is that the anti-lock brakes locked up while pulling the truck out of the mud and it caused my truck to crash into the 2004 hummer suv that was pulling my chevrolet out of the mud. the brakes became totally disabled while pulling the truck. the pedal was so hard and did not move. i had both legs on the brake pedal and the brakes did not work. there is no way to disable the anti-lock brakes on this vehicle. we are very lucky that nobody got hurt and the only damages were to my truck. i am requesting some repair assistance and improvements be made to allow me to disable the anti-lock braking system when needed to prevent these types of accidents and injury.  I own a 2001 chevrolet silverado 4 wheel drive. it currently has 34,000 miles on it. the abs was activating nearly every time the vehicle came to a stop. this would occur at speeds less than 5-10 mph on dry pavement under normal driving and braking conditions. i have had several close calls with rear ending another motorist due to the increased stopping distance when the abs activates. i just had both front hub assemblies replaced at a cost of $800. in my opinion, a vehicle with only 34,000 miles should not have had this type of necessary repair. gm has had similar problems with their abs on early to mid 1990's model trucks. i believe this is a manufacture defect and needs to be addressed by gm and the supplier of their abs parts. i know of 3 other light trucks in my area that have had the exact same problem. *jb

The problem is when coming to a stop (under braking) if you don't come to a complete and total stop and you decide to switch back to the accelerator, the truck free revs for about half a second and then dumps the transmission in gear. while this has yet to cause me any dangerous problems, i believe it very well could in the rain or ice/snow. if you're not prepared for it, sometimes it hits hard enough that for a moment you're somewhat disoriented, representing a dangerous situation if there's other traffic around. *ak

The abs light and brake light come on at any time during normal driving. however, it can never be checked because it does not save it in the computer memory when the vehicle is turned off. according to the owner's manual, this means i have no anti-lock brakes. the second problem is very serious also. the fuel gauge is erratic and inaccurate. i fear that i may run out of fuel at some point because of this. then i may be stuck on the side of the road. i currently have to track my mileage with the trip meter to make sure it doesn't happen. through research on the internet, i realize these are very common on this vehicle and gm refuses to recall it.

My father, who is a mechanic, had a 2001 chevrolet silverado hd in perfect condition. on a sunday afternoon with clear conditions, he was traveling to an apple orchard in connecticut. traveling about 30 m.p.h., he noticed a large vehicle backing out of a driveway. as a dump truck operator, he is well aware of the limited visibility in this particular vehicle and how difficult it would be for the vehicle to stop. so, he pushed the brakes in his vehicle and the brakes went all the way to the floor without any response. realizing his brakes had failed, he immediately realized he needed to avoid colliding with the second vehicle. his quick response and experience behind the wheel allowed him to miss the second vehicle. he didn't want to hit the vehicle because he would have impacted the drivers side. instead, his truck bolted into a stone wall, flipped and ended up in between two trees. his air bags never deployed. he landed in the yard of someone's home and the homeowner called the police. the police sited in his police report that the air bag failed and the brakes appeared to fail as well. my father ended up with a few scrapes and bruises and he is just glad everyone involved was alright. chevrolet never took responsibility for this matter. his insurance company indicated that they would pursue legal action but it would be a long, difficult process. on the consumer protection website, it does indicate that chevrolet had recalled a few of their vehicles because of anti-lock problems. however, the incident involving my father is due to entire brake failure. my fathers main mission now is to get the word out to prevent this from occurring to anyone else. as a mechanic, he always kept his vehicles in tip-top shape making sure everything was in good working order and free of dirt, debris or salt in the winter. it would be appreciated if you could look into this matter to prevent this unfortunate incident from happening to someone else. *jb

Ever since i purchased the pickup the brakes have been somewhat substandard. the pedal will go to the floor if you hold it down such as at a stop light or when trying to brake a trailer. on numerous occasions i have nearly run a stop light or have actually went through a intersection that i had intended to slow down to turn or yield to oncoming traffic. last week, i nearly put it into the river when i launched my boat, if i hadn't been thinking or had i panicked, it would have happened. instead i put it in drive and was able to use the engine to stop me, this is definitely not good on the drive train. i have bled the brake system, changed the fluid, replaced the pads (rear pads were completely gone, front were like new)the pickup still doesn't stop properly. i don't drive it as much as i would like due to this problem. *jb

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC - SWITCHES - BRAKE WARNING
07/18/2005620002012/14/2004
The abs light and brake light come on at any time during normal driving. however, it can never be checked because it does not save it in the computer memory when the vehicle is turned off. according to the owner's manual, this means i have no anti-lock brakes. the second problem is very serious also. the fuel gauge is erratic and inaccurate. i fear that i may run out of fuel at some point because of this. then i may be stuck on the side of the road. i currently have to track my mileage with the trip meter to make sure it doesn't happen. through research on the internet, i realize these are very common on this vehicle and gm refuses to recall it.
