Defect SummaryCertain minivans are being recalled that were originally sold in or currently registered in the 27 states plus the district of columbia that use greater amounts of salt for winter road deicing. the up-front (uf) air bag sensors that contain brass bushings installed in these vehicles may corrode and crack allowing water to enter the sensor. these sensors provide enhanced air bag performance in certain types of frontal crashes.
Consequence SummaryIn one of these crashes, with one or both of the vehicle's uf sensors inoperative, the occupants will not benefit from the enhanced air bag protection that these sensors would provide.
Corrective SummaryFor vehicles registered in the recall states, dealers will replace the original uf air bag sensors with ones with greater corrosion resistance. vehicles registered in other states will obtain a lifetime free replacement of any uf sensor that fails. the campaign began on july 2, 2007. owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesDaimlerchrysler's campaign nos. g09/x16. daimlerchrysler has not decided that this is a defect related to motor vehicle safety.however, it has informed nhtsa that it will provide the modifications described above free of charge. customers also may contact the national highway traffic safety administration

Defect SummaryChrysler is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 dodge caravan, grand caravan and chrysler town & country vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, kansas, kentucky, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, tennessee, utah, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin, alaska and the district of columbia. the front crash sensors may crack under certain environmental conditions and allow water to enter into the sensor. this can cause the sensor to become inoperative and illuminate the airbag warning light. these sensors were added to enhance the performance of the airbag system in certain frontal crashes.
Consequence SummaryIf the front crash sensors become inoperative, the driver is immediately alerted by illumination of the airbag warning light and the vehicle should be promptly serviced. until the vehicle is repaired, the airbags may not provide the enhanced protection in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryChrysler will replace the front airbag sensors with a new design. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety improvement campaign will begin during june 2010. owners may contact chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesChrysler's campaign number is j38. chrysler has not decided that this is a defect related to motor vehicle safety.however, chrysler has informed nhtsa that it will provide the modifications described above at no cost.

AIR BAGS - FRONTAL
PE05061CHRYSLER GROUP LLC11/10/200503/08/2006FRONT AIR BAG CRASH SENSOR FAILURE
The model year (my) 2005 daimlerchrysler (dc) minivans have the new advanced frontal air bag systems with two front crash sensors mounted on the frame rails behind the front bumper and a main crash sensor inside the air bag control module mounted in the passenger compartment.according to dc, the front crash sensors are designed to optimize detection of frontal offset and angular crashes.the advanced air bag system offers different levels of air bag inflation based on input from the crash sensors.this investigation revealed that the front crash sensors can corrode from water entering the sensor assembly.dc is still investigating all potential root causes of sensor failures.a corroded sensor can set a fault code, illuminate the air bag warning lamp, and become disabled.it appears that failure of one or both front crash sensors can potentially result in no/late deployment of frontal air bags and non-deployment of driver's higher inflation levels in certain frontal crashes.it should be noted that occupants of vehicles involved in a crash may not be aware of late or improperly reduced level of air bag inflation and thus field reporting of such events may be suppressed.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea06-003) for further investigation of my 2005 (and 2006) dc minivans.note: total number of odi and manufacturer complaints includes some duplicate reports.

Chrysler will replace the frame rail-mounted front air bag crash sensors in approximately 312,442 model year (my) 2005 and 2006 chrysler minivans (recall 10v-008).these vehicles are equipped with front crash sensors with ultradur brand plastic housings and steel bushings and were built between january 19, 2005 and april 5, 2006.this action covers vehicles originally sold, or currently registered, in 27 states (alaska, connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kansas, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, utah, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin) and the district of columbia.vehicles sold or currently registered outside of these states, approximately 185,000 my 2005-2006 minivans, are not included in the recall.although these vehicles use the same crash sensors and were built during the same period as the ones described above, they experience significantly lower failure rates because of reduced road salt exposure.also, my 2006-2007 minivans built after april 5, 2006, are not included in the recall.these vehicles are equipped with front crash sensors with crastin brand plastic housings and steel bushings and experience significantly lower failure rates compared to the recalled vehicles.nhtsa and chrysler differ regarding the significance and impact of the defect, but in the interest of remedying the affected vehicles expeditiously and to avoid a protracted dispute, chrysler is implementing steps to replace the front crash sensors.based on these actions, the agency has decided that further use of its resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists in the subject vehicles.the agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.select document search for additional information.

I own a 2005 dodge caravan, that has 2 recalls for the front airbag sensor. one the covers the state i live in, massachusetts, and one that covers another 350,000 vehicles in those same states. my airbag warning light has been on for 2 1/2 years, the dealer told me that it would be a recall item, and to wait to have it fixed. that was the dealer in lowell, ma. now my van has failed state inspection due to this reason, and dodge said that my van isn't covered. the only critieria is that it be garaged in massachusetts, which it has been for the last 5 years. i need this recall to fix the problem, so i can drive my vehicle legally. it should be covered, and if i have a crash, i don't know if the sensor will deploy the airbags.

We purchased our 2005 dodge grand caravan new and the airbag light just started coming on and off this winter (2009-2010). now the airbag light stays on all of the time. i took it to an independent shop to have them run the diagnostics on the light. the code came back as a bad lf airbag sensor and from there i started searching on the internet. i found that there was a major recall on 312,442 dodge caravans for this exact problem (corrosion on sensor). i called dodge to find out if our van was included in the recall. they informed me that it was not included in the recall and basically said i was out of luck but to save my receipts for the repair in case it was to ever be included in the recall. as of now i have not replaced the sensor because i feel this is a known safety problem and should be taken care of by dodge. as of now our airbags are not operating at all because the repair is quite costly and i am frustrated to think that dodge knows they are putting lives in danger but obviously only recalled a limited number of units. *tr

2005 dodge caravan - airbag light is on. vehicle apparently does not meet the criteria for the recall campaign but has the general requirements needed for replacement: 1. airbag sensor illuminated 2. vehicle registered in a salt belt area which could cause corrosion. *tr

Air bag light comes on and remains on. i took the van to the shop and the mechanic placed on a diagnostic machine and stated that there was nothing showing the something was wrong with the airbag and that i should take the car back to the dealer. *tr

On our 2005 dodge caravan the air bag light came on. when we brought it in to the dodge dealer we were told that the right hand front impact sensor was bad. they said the wires were corroded and the sensor was bad. it was not covered under warranty and would cost $250.00 to replace. after looking at the dodge recalls they did recall this problem for the 2005 dodge caravan but not ours. the problem with the sensor on our van is the same as what the recall said. *tr

Air bag light came on at 49,000 miles. there was also a recall for the airbag sensors. the dealer replaced the sensors but the airbag light stayed on. they said the clock spring needed to be replaced. this sounds like the same clock spring problems that dodge has had in previous years. *tr

Re: my 2005 dodge caravan. air bag warning light came on. airbag is inoperable, but chrysler cannot supply new sensors for at least a week, or more, according to local dealer. it's an industry-wide problem, they say, with many sensor failures. this means that many chrysler owners are left to drive without operable airbags... not a good situation. chrysler should have been prepared for this. *jb

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) have a 2005 dodge caravan which i purchased from new. approximately 2 months ago noticed that the airbag warning light came on. tried to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it after a while . this eliminated the warning light for a short period of time. found out that there had been 2 recalls on these vans for a similar problem. called both dodge and the local dealer we purchased the caravan from, after giving them the vin number ([xxx]) they said this was not part of the recall. the recall describes exactly what has happened to my caravan. why is my caravan not covered by the 2005/2006 recalls. *tr

Description: i was involved in an accident on 10 jan 2010 while driving my 2005 dodge caravan sxt. the accident was initially caused by an individual carrying furniture in the back of his pick-up truck. the furniture fell out of the back of the truck forced myself and another driver in front of me to slam on our brakes. i immediately applied my brakes however the abs did not engage and i skidded into the chevy silverado truck that was traveling in front of me. i left two 50ft skid marks (my estimate) behind me. ultimately, the failure of the abs system caused me to impact the rear of the silverado. additionally, and just as importantly, my air bags did not deploy upon impact. i was later informed by dodge/chrysler, who i complained to, that based on the area of impact the sensors were not damaged, which in-turn was the determining factor why they didn't deploy. after checking all the recalls for my van there was a recall for the airbag sensor that dodge failed to inform us of, in addition to other recalls.we took plenty of pictures at the scene of the accident to show all the problems i have stated in the complaint, dodge model: caravan model year: 2005 manufacturer: daimlerchrysler corporation mfr's report date: may 01, 2007 nhtsa campaign id number: 07v192000 ea06003 nhtsa action number: ea06003 component: air bags:frontal:sensor/control module potential number of units affected: 270958 summary: make: dodge model: caravan model year: 2005 manufacturer: chrysler group llc mfr's report date: jan 07, 2010 nhtsa campaign id number: 10v008000 rq09003 nhtsa action number: rq09003 component: air bags:frontal:sensor/control module potential number of units affected: 312442make: dodge model: caravan model year: 2005 manufacturer: brake parts, inc. mfr's report date: mar 09, 2006 nhtsa campaign id number: 06e022000 n/a nhtsa action number: n/a component: service brakes, hydraulic. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge caravan. while driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions, the frontal air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the warning indicator remained lit until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they stated that the failure was due to the frontal air bag sensor. the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 07v192000 (air bags;frontal;sensor/control module), although the failures were identical. the vehicle is in the process of being repaired. the failure mileage was 64,000 and current mileage was 65,000.

I have a 2005 dodge caravan, purchased new. it has 64000 miles and has never been in a collision and has never had the airbags deployed. the airbag light has come on and will not go off. there was a recall in may 2007, but the dealer states that my vin number is not included. we live in western ny where road salt has been heavily used, which has been identified as part of the cause of this problem. the dealer stated to me that it would cost me $94.00 to get a diagnostic test and then an additional $250.00 to fix it. i don't understand why i should have to pay for this repair when 2005 dodge caravans in 27 states have been recalled and fixed free. my vehicle fits all the criteria for this recall except for the vin number. what recourse do i have in this? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge caravan. the contact stated that the air bag lamp illuminated. the manufacturer was contacted and referred him to the dealer to have the failure diagnosed. the dealer was contacted but a decision was not made to perform a diagnostic test. the contact was concerned that he had to pay for a diagnostic test since the vehicle experienced the same failure specified in nhtsa recall campaign number: 07v192000 (air bags:frontal:sensor/control module) and recall nhtsa campaign id number: 10v008000 (air bags:frontal:sensor/control module). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 64,000 and current mileage was 65,000.

Incident #3 this is the third time my car instrument panel did this under 25,000 miles. i was driving down the road and i can see that i am actually moving but none of my instruments are. none of them move all the while the car door ajar lights are on so after checking the doors 3-4 times i just drove on as they were clearly closed . fueled up the car and restarted. instruments all a go .sometimes it takes overnight before the panel works again. airbag light has been on for 6 months and check engine light is always popping on and off . how will i know if the van is really is danger of breaking down , or perhaps running out of gas as this van has cried wolf too many times .i will never know if a problem really exist . i consider this a major safety issue . i have received an airbag recall, so that's one down but when will they recall the whole instrument panel it is either shutting completely down or popping up check engine light . i have taken this car in for this check engine light several times. they just say maybe you didn't put the lid on the gas tank right . so at one time that lid was replaced. i am not under warranty any longer but i don't like the idea of driving down the interstate with 4 kids and not knowing how fast iam going or if i am running out of gas. like i said before the instrument panel just not working at all is a major defect . iam not sure but i think the system is corrupt. planning to trade if action is not taken in the near future. i pay for a reliable car and that's not what iam getting . i hope there are others who have had this experience so that the instrument panel will be recalled. *tr

My wife was driving from work while getting on to the freeway the check engine light came on. two minutes later the airbag light came on also. took to dealership next day and was told that both front impact sensors and connectors needed to be replaced. vehicle is a 2005 with 43000 miles which is out of warranty so we will have to pay for repair. parts were ordered but are on national backorder so they have no idea when they will come in.

My air bag light is on all the time. i'm on my third sensor. for me, they last about six months before the problem returns. my mechanic says the airbag won't deploy if needed, others say it could deploy for no reason. the vehicle is beyond the original warranty and because the vehicle is beyond the original warranty, the dealer is not willing to cover the costs even though it is clearly a flaw with this vehicle. there is currently no recall that i am aware of. *jb

I have a 2005 dodge caravan that i bought new from foster motors, a dodge dealer from middlebury, vt. this winter, the air bag warning light came on and stayed on. i took the car to the dealer and they replaced front air bag sensors that had rusted. they did this under warranty and i did not have to pay. i thought it was very odd seeing how the car is about a year old. i have never had any problem with any air bag of any vehicle i owned before. perhaps some parts made of bamboo from overseas? perhaps not because bamboo will not rust. at any rate, i see where there is an investigation of this problem. you can add mine to the list if you wish. the date of the problem is an estimate. thank you, dennis from vermont. *jb

Dt: contact owns a 2005 dodge caravan. on 10-11-05 was driving home from a trip when the airbag warning light came on. took it to the dealer the next day, the vehicle was put on a machine where they found that the sensors and the wiring harness were defective. this was located on the passenger's side. the one on the left side which was the driver's side was not fixed. the contact felt that the manufacturer should pay to have the driver's side sensors and the wiring fixed at no charge to the contact because they also were defective. *ak

AIR BAGS - KNEE BOLSTER

My mother was involved in an accident, driving at 23 mph in a chrysler minivan. she hit a telephone pole head on. the air bags deployed, although they did not touch my mother, she was wearing her seatbelt. when the knee airbag deployed however, the door covering it was what hit my mother in both her shins with the force of the air bag behind it! although it did not break any bones, the impact caused extensive bleeding and edema under the skin. she suffered a cracked rib and breast bone in the accident, which we all understand, but the added agony of having two extremely bruised and swollen legs (purple, green, red--with lime sized clots under the skin) from her knees to her ankles caused by this safety device is infuriating!!! where do i go for answers??? *nm
