Defect SummaryChrysler is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 dodge caravan, grand caravan and chrysler town & country vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, kansas, kentucky, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, tennessee, utah, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin, alaska and the district of columbia. the front crash sensors may crack under certain environmental conditions and allow water to enter into the sensor. this can cause the sensor to become inoperative and illuminate the airbag warning light. these sensors were added to enhance the performance of the airbag system in certain frontal crashes.
Consequence SummaryIf the front crash sensors become inoperative, the driver is immediately alerted by illumination of the airbag warning light and the vehicle should be promptly serviced. until the vehicle is repaired, the airbags may not provide the enhanced protection in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryChrysler will replace the front airbag sensors with a new design. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety improvement campaign will begin during june 2010. owners may contact chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesChrysler's campaign number is j38. chrysler has not decided that this is a defect related to motor vehicle safety.however, chrysler has informed nhtsa that it will provide the modifications described above at no cost.

I bought a 2006 dodge caravan in 2009. it had 20,000 at that time. shortly after purchase we drove the van approximately 100 miles. it began making roaring noises so i pulled over and stopped. after sitting for about 20 minutes, i started the car again and there was no noise. every time i traveled for over 45 minutes, this would happen. i took the car to be looked at several times but no one could find a problem. finally in january of this year the car started making this noise all of the time and my son-in-law, who is a mechanic, said that it needed power steering fluid. that fixed the problem for awhile. in march, i took my car in and was told that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced! very expensive! the car is now only making noise when i go through standing water. also, the airbag warning light illuminates at intervals. it seems that a lot of people are having these same complaints. i think that dodge needs to do some recalls and some repairs!

I have a 2006 dodge grand caravan and i have 55,000 miles on it. my air bag light came on and it stays on. the book said to get it fixed immediately so i called a dealership that is 30 miles one way and they said it would cost $79.00 to look at it and it would cost up to $300.00 if the air bag sensor was bad. i then called a local auto shop and they said they could check it for $49.00 and they did. the rt front air bag sensor was indeed bad. it had corrosion inside it. the total bill might come to $150.00 or more. i checked on line and see, there was a dodge/chrysler recall on the 2005 model for corrosion getting in the sensor and causing them to fail (which is the same thing my 2006 did) why isn't the 2006 models included in the recall? i called chrysler and they said if it gets put on a recall list then i would be reimbursed for my expenses because that would be a safety issue no matter where i had it fixed. *tr
