Defect SummaryCertain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles may experience unwanted antilock brake system (abs) activation. this condition is more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas. this recall will be launched in the salt belt states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maryland, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia only.
Consequence SummaryThis can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. the recall began september 22, 2005. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
NotesGm recall no. 05068. gm revised the involved vehicles by amending the original 573 report on october 4, 2005. gm revised the original 573 report on december 16, 2005, to include additional states and vehicle population.customers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty pickup trucks equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes. some of these vehicles have an antilock brake system (abs) motor containing an out-of-specification spring clip. this clip could allow the motor bearing to become misaligned. if misalignment occurs, eventually the abs would be non-functional.
Consequence SummaryThe base brakes would remain fully functional, but the dynamic rear proportioning (drp) system, which optimizes front to rear brake balance, would become inoperative.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the brake pressure module valve assembly.
NotesGm recall no. 00013.owner notification began march 27, 2000. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

Defect SummaryThis is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. however, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. vehicle description: 1/2 ton light duty pickup trucks. on certain trucks, failure to follow the service procedure set forth in the service manual for removal of the front brake caliper can result in movement of the front brake hose relative to its knuckle mounting bracket. if this movement results in increased length between the bracket and the banjo fitting that attaches to the brake caliper, it is possible for the brake hose to come in contact with the wheel rim.
Consequence SummaryThis contact with the wheel rim could, in time, cause the brake hose to become worn to the point that brake fluid leakage could occur. if this occurred, loss of front brakes is possible.
Corrective SummaryDealers will attach a notice label to the front brake hoses stating that the calipers must be supported when removed.
NotesGm has decided to conduct a service program to install a label on the hose with warning and recommendations to support the brake calipers when removing them.owners can contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782, concerning this program.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. some of these vehicles have a clearance condition between the front right-hand brake pipe and the body cross sill that could decrease to the point of allowing contact during the life of the vehicle. if contact occurs and the brake pipe becomes damaged, in half of the brake system there can be a loss of brake fluid and pressure. the brake warning lamp will be activated when the brake fluid level reaches the indicator limit.
Consequence SummaryDuring braking, the pedal will be lower than normal and stopping distances will be longer. if this occurs when stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the front right-hand brake pipe for wear. if there are signs of wear, this section of the brake pipe will be replaced with a new designed brake pipe section. if there are not signs of wear on the brake pipe, the dealer will install a spacer clip to ensure sufficient clearance between the brake pipe and the body cross sill.
NotesOwner notification began february 5, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

PE10010GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/30/201001/05/2011Brake line corrosion failure
The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure.odi's and gm's analysis indicates that 85 percent of the complaints occurred on vehicles used primarily in states that use salt on the roads during winter months (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).overall the complaint rates per 100,000 vehicles for salt belt states is 43.0 and non-salt belt is 3.0.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints the brake pipe failure occurred suddenly, with no warning (i.e., no mil, brake fluid loss warning), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 30 of these the increase in stopping distance that resulted was a factor in the crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-001) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well.
PE10010GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/30/2010Brake line failure due to corrosion
The office of defects investigation (odi) received a defect petition on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.the petitioner alleged a sudden loss of brake effectiveness and extended stopping distance after a corroded brake burst during a brake application. odi has received 110 owner complaints for my 1999 through 2003 chevrolet and gmc c/k series pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, including 3 involving my 2003 2500 series heavy-duty pickup trucks.the complaints allege the loss of braking effectiveness due to brake line rupture because of corrosion.in 37 of these complaints, the brake line failure was confirmed by a dealer inspection.three complaints allege that corroded brake line failure resulted in a crash.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to determine the frequency, scope and safety consequences of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.

03/27/200518000105/05/2000
Vehicle: 2000 gmc sierra, ext. cab, 4wd, less than 19000 miles. vehicle exibited intermittant low-speed antilock brake activation. although there were many close calls especially when the antilock motor would activate upon initial brake application (very low pressure in hydraulic lines), no damage was caused to the vehicle or other property. a potential dangerous situation exists with these heavy vehicles. low output from right front abs sensor was diagnosed. i replaced entire hub and sensor assembly. the symptom is now gone. the old part is still in my posession for inspection.

Failure of the abs system on my 2000 gmc sierra pickup. abs would acctivate at slow speeds and would make stopping truck very hard.had to de activate abs system so truch was useable.dealer stated that problem was due to region of country that the truck was used in and was not their problem!

Antilock brakes engage at low speed, like when coming up to a stop sign, or when pulling up to a drive thru window.

While positioning my gmc sierra pickup to backup my utility trailer the brakes completely failed. the brake pedel fell completely to the floor with no stopping capability. brake fluid was found squirting out of a burst open metal brake line located on a frame member under the area of the radiator. i traced the line from the front right wheel to the brake control module located under the drivers seat. the location of the leak was in a straight section of the line with no clamps in the vacinity. all the brake lines appear to be completely rusted. the truck is now obviously undrivable. i had just finished a 20 mile road trip and arrived home when the brakes failed. i was always under the impression that the brake system was completely seperated, front from the rear. i don't understand how one burst front brake line can cause complete brake failure. i am looking for direction.

Complete hydraulic brake failure without warning. check engine light only came on after the vehicle was stopped with the emergency brake. the dealer said that the front brake had stopped working sometime ago, only the rear brake had been working. the dealer replaced rear pads and rotors and parking brake shoes, found four busted brake lines, replace all front brake lines, master cylinder to abs module (2) and from module to front brakes(2).

Corroded hydraulic brake line resulted in substantially reduced braking. this failure occurred during a stop which required higher pedal pressure than typical application, causing the corroded line to burst.

The frame on the truck is cracked several inches in a couple of places and rotted. it is very thin and i was told there was nothing solid to weld to and repair it. they said i would have to have the frame replaced. the truck has just turned 100000 miles. i have had it for six years and take excellent care of it. it runs great. the body is in excellent shape, there is one small hole in the driver side rocker panel i was going to repair in the near future ( i do not know if i will now bother). other than that the body is near perfect. there is no rot in the floors or truck bed. the repair shop could not believe how bad the frame is when the truck looks so great. i have found a number of complaints on the internet similar to this, maybe if enough people speak up something will get done. also, the anti lock brakes have not worked for some time now. i was told they get rust in the assembly and do not work right. i have also had several brake lines break and need to be replaced. i realize that brake lines do rust over time and do need to be replaced (they should be made from stainless steel from the factory) but the anti locks should work and a frame should not rot and crack as it has.

Brake line to the front passenger wheel blew apart causing the brake fluid to leak out, and dramatically decreased the stopping ability of the vehicle. had this line replaced by a local repair shop, and was notified by personnel that all of the lines were in bad condition, and needed to be replaced soon.

Nhtsa should be opening investagations concerning the brake line corrosion incidents. we just purchased this truck less than a year ago, and brake failure caused us to have this in the shop for over a month and still have no truck yet. there are enough complaints on the internet for the nhtsa to have a recall before someone gets killed due to this problem. this truck only cost us 6000.00. repairs will probally be half that price.

I experienced sudden brake failure in my driveway. there was no warning light, just the brake pedal going to the floor. my mechanic looked at the failed line and said all my lines and abs unit were corroded and needed to be replaced. he also found my right rear spring hanger was rusted off and the spring was just resting on the body. the rear wheel brake backers plates are rusted off also, and the entire frame is very corroded. this is a huge repair bill that may exceed the value of the truck. this is not normal corrosion. i have lived in nh 55 yrs and have never had a vehicle rot like this. i have a 2000 volvo v70 with 147,000 miles on it with no issues. obviously gm cheapened this truck up or bought defective parts. i have found hundreds of accounts on the internet identical to mine. this vehicle needs to be recalled before people are killed. i am thankful i was in my driveway and not highway or city driving at the time of the failure. do the right thing and hold gm responsible. there would be no gm without our tax dollars and they need to make this right. thank you

Brake failure- serverely rusted and corroided brake lines. had to have every brake line changed. this is the second time this has happened to this vehicle; the first time in 2005 with 70,000 miles and the second time was on 10/16/11 with 85,000 miles. brake lines broke and all fluid came out, no brakes at all had to tow vehicle to garage. this last repair cost me $1200.00. my truck is used for personal use, normal operation.

Several brake lines have rusted through, this caused loss of brake fluid and loss of any braking. this has caused me to be without a truck. do to this defect gmc has caused a very dangerous vehicle to be on the road. this will now cost me two thousand dollars to make my truck safe to drive. gmc needs to be held responsible for this poor material in brake line material. please correct this defect before lives are lost.

On 9 june 2011, i was towing my 8,000 lb camper back from the dealer when i pushed on the brake pedal and it went all the way to the floor, i used my camper brakes to stop the truck and find out what was wrong. i had to travel about 30 miles without brakes pulling my camper using only the camper brakes with the brake controller inside the trcuk. once i arrived home i found a line of fluid on the ground, i opened the hood and found no brake fluid in the resevior. i refilled the resevior and had my wife push the brake pedal so i could find the leak. the brake line under the drivers door going to the front right tire was leaking. this happened about two years ago with the left rear brake line, i at that time was also pulling my camper. thank god there was not an accident involved in both, i consider myself a very good driver and a safe driver. all my brake lines need replaced on my 2000 gmc seirre truck. i have never seen brake lines rust and corrode like this, this is not good for gm. i take good care of my vehicles and this is something that will cost me alot of money to replace these lines. you look at my truck and can see that i take care of it, it does not look like it is a 2000 from the outside, but look at it from underneath and it looks to be 100 years old. i still have the part of the line that i replaced this past week, but the line i had to replace 2 years ago i do not have.

Attempting to stop for a school bus, as i pressed on the brake pedal it went to the floor and the truck did not come to a complete stop. after pulling over, it was discovered that the brake line was leaking fluid on the ground. upon further inspection, noticed the brake lines are corroded. be it know that the frame and body parts on this truck are also rusted as to not pass state inspection. the truck is just over 10 years old and unsafe to drive due to multiple manufacture defects.

While applying the brakes, the brake pedal went to the floor. the vehicle braking power was diminished and the braking distance was substantially increased. had another vehicle or structure been in front of my truck there would have an accident with airbag deployment and injuries. a visual inspection of the braking system by this writer revealed a ruptured brake line. the area of the rupture as well as the balance of the suspect brake line was in poor condition due to corrosion. the remaining brake lines were found in a similar corroded condition. the corroded condition was found on the entire length of the brake lines up to within 6 of the master cylinder. the corrosion was also in areas including what this writer would consider protected areas.

2000 gmc sierra brake line corrosion issue. ruptured steel line below the drivers door. 1). after a hard stop due to other motorist pulling out in front of me the brakes were not as firm as before. 2). the next morning i found an oil spot on driveway and brake reservoir half empty. investigated and found heavily corroded brake lines in a group of four below drivers door against outside of frame. one line leaking fluid badly. 3). i went to general motors to purchase new brake lines and was told that the come in bulk rolls only. they have to be bent to shape and flared to be installed. this seems like a very labor intensive repair and would be very costly. i am weighing my options.

I have a 2000 gmc sierra pickup truck. today i experienced a total failure of the braking system; while coming up to a light on a street with a speed limit of 50 mph, i lost all braking ability and the parking brake was of no use. there was no accident (thank god) but after having the truck towed to a repair shop, a web search showed a recent article describing similar failures. thought i should file a complaint before speaking with gm tomorrow morning.

On or about 18 oct 2009 as i was turning into my driveway as i applied the brakes on my 2000 gme 1/2 ton truck it failed to stop as normal. i almost hit my travel trailer. the brakes made an unusual noise that sounded as if it came from around the brake booster. i had it replaced, this did not eliminate the problem. this vehicle was not driven again until around 15 jan 2010 this braking problem occurred again. after taking the vehicle to a chevrolet dealer and talking with a service mgr. with some 33 years experience,he recognized the problem. he explained that the anti-lock brake system was activating resulting in increased stopping distances during low speed brake applications. he removed the wheel speed sensors and cleaned the wheel speed sensors mounting surface and applied a rust inhibitor and reinstalled the wheel sensors at a cost to me of $252.00 i believe gmc should bear this cost as there is a recall on this problem. recall id# 43621 dated aug.29. 2005 this recall did not cover va.,but the abs brake problem does not know that it is in va..gmc should recall all vehicles with this abs system regardless which state the vehicle is in. *tr

Why is it that four people i know who own gmc vehicles all have had to disconnect their abs systems by pulling the fuse? the wheel sensors have become defective and are very expensive to repair or replace. isn't the abs system supposed to be a safety feature? i think something must be wrong with the set-up or design. gm should have to recall them. *tr

About three years ago i took my 2000 sierra truck to my gmc dealer after experiencing a few low speed abs activations and brake failures causing me to drift into oncoming traffic. since tandom log trucks are frequent travelers on our local roads, i wanted to resolve the problem right away. my gmc service manager informed me that the only way to correct the problem was to replace the front hub assemblies containing the wheel speed sensors at a cost of $500 each for parts only. i decided against that idea and opted to remove the abs fuse under the dash board. i kept inquiring at the dealer about any gm sponsored repairs and finally read about the august 29, 2005 recall notice which involved cleaning, sanding, and lubricating the wheel speed sensors. the recall service work was done on 10/13/05, according to service bullitin #05068, but my truck continued to drift into traffic as before. this time i removed the abs fuse from under the hood so i could finally use the cruise control again. the service manager has since told me that there is no authorized follow up procedure other than to replace the hub assemblies or speed sensors, at my expense. the brakes function adequately without the abs fuse, but the red brake failure light on the instrument panel is on continually, as well as the amber abs light. if i go back to removing the interior abs fuse, the red light will go out and should be available to indicate any other cause for brake failure, but i sacrafice the cruise control. gm has admitted that they designed a defective abs system that is prone to rust and corrosion in certain rust belt states and provinces of canada and they are aware that these vehicles have been unsafe to operate. the ineffective recall repairs to my truck cost general motors $46.88 on the invoice and yet they expect me to pay about $1,200 to really repair and replace their defective parts. i don't think so.

The abs system in my 2000 gmc sierra 1500 pickup came on several times while braking on dry pavement, causing me to lose the ability to control my vehicle. after this happened a couple times i was more cautious when stopping, so accidents were avoided - however, before i was ablet to get my vehicle in for service there were several times when i was out of control. this only occurred when i was coming to a stop, and the vehicle had slowed to 5 mph or less. i would not be reporting this but for the fact that the mechanic at my brake shop said he has seen this same problem with several gm trucks of this age. apparently the problem is that the abs sensor, built into the front wheel hubs, is not designed well enough to handle the exposure to road salt and sand common to the northeast. i was lucky that i did not get into an accident due to this problem. but others may not be as fortunate in the future. also, due to the design of the hub/sensor, this repair is rather expensive (almost $400), so i was only able to afford repairs on one side. my mechanic said the other side will likely fail soon as well. *jb

When coming to a normal stop and speed is around 5 mph the abs system makes a loud noise, the brake pedal becomes stiff and the vehicle does not stop. this happened 2 years ago (the first time - approximately 42,000 miles) and the dealer replaced the front wheel speed sensors. now the same problem is occurring. the dealer states that the wheel speed sensors need to be replaced again and note that there were no codes in the computer. the dealer was able to reproduce the problem. the abs warning light does not come on. i contacted gm's customer assistance and was told that since the vehicle is out of warranty and the parts are out of warranty, they cannot help with the repair. my point is after the parts are replaced, this can happen again with no warning. the first time this happened, i was in rush hour traffic and had to veer off to the shoulder and hit the emergency brake. this time, i was exiting my driveway and was unable to stop and rolled into the road. gm claims that this is not a documented issue, even after admitting there is a tsb for this repair. the repair is insufficient in my opinion. i does not prevent brake loss from occurring in the future without warning. after calling gm customer assistance back and complaining, they said to wait 2 to 3 days to see if they will cover the repair cost (wheel speed sensors). they avoid answering how this will be resolved so that it will not happen again.*ak

When i press on the brake pedals on a sudden stop on bumpy roads at speeds over 30 mph, the brake pedal does not depress. the brake pedal vibrates and the vehicle does not stop properly. it takes the truck a longer time to stop than normal. this almost casued me to rear end cars on more than one ocassion. i had to take my foot of the brake pedal and reapply pressure to get firm brake pressure. when the brake pedal vibrates, it gives a false sense of abs working but the truck stops slower than if it were the abs. sudden stops on bumpy roads are very dangerous. *ak

The abs turns on in my truck while coming to a slow stop causing the truck to not stop. i took upart my hubs, the front abs sensor has corrosion in it that puts it out by a few thousandths and it thinks it is going -5 mph and turns the abs on. this has almost caused several accidents for me as i have rolled right into several intersections when i expected my brakes to stop my truck. luckily i was quick enough to use the ebrake each time until i could get a temp fix going. the problem is with the sensor, not the abs itself. i am not sure how to correct it, other than cleaning it regularly, so i disbaled my abs (pulling the fuse under the hood) to make it safe to drive the truck in the mean time until a resolution can be found. *ak

My 2000 gmc sierra 1500 pick up has had poor braking from the time i bought it new from the dealer. they said it was normal for this vehicle. while driving to wisconsin from our ohio home on july 1, 2004, i had to brake quickly due to heavy traffic going through downtown chicago. the brakes did not totally fail, but were poor enough that i had to quickly change to the next lane to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me. after returning from vacation, i did some investigation online and found through a friend of a friend that gm engineers were aware of brake problems with this and subsequent models and instituted a fix with the 2003 model to correct the problem. i then contacted my local dealer, who said gm had no recall nor would they cover any repair costs incurred, since i was 3 months out of warranty even though within the mileage. i had the brakes repaired at the dealer, norris gmc in medina, ohio, and it totaled $1,587, or close to that. i found that to be preposterous and filed a complaint with gm customer service. to date, they have offered no retribution for this claim. knowing that they had a problem, which was subsequently fixed on later models is reprehensible to me and i feel they should have at least notified owners to have their vehicles inspected when they learned of the defect. i doubt that i am alone in this issue and would like your assistance in bringing gm to offer some retribution for those of us who have had similar experiences.

Dt:the owner had problems with the low speed brake applications when coming to a stop at stop signs. the abs problems began last year. the owner had to have the front wheel sensors and rings replaced. the brakes worked okay for a while. then on july 28 2005 while driving at 30 mph and approaching a red light tried to stop but the brakes failed. could not stop and hit the curb. the owner added a quart of brake fluid and looked underneath and saw the brake fluid squirting out of the brake lines. then, at home the owner let the vehicle sit and the rest of the brake fluid drained out. then, the owner called gmc, and told them what happened. he did not think it was normal for the brake lines to rust at 47,000 miles. gmc advised the owner to take the car to the local dealership, who kept the car for one week. gmc sent an investigator who could not find a leak in the brake lines. the inspector was contacted by the owner ,and the owner asked if the inspector had filled the brake fluid and pushed the brake and he said no. the owner asked how can the fluid leak out if brake fluid was not put in. then, the owner examined the brake lines and saw that they were rusted/corroded. the owner contacted gmc again advising gmc that the inspector had not filled the brake lines. gmc denied the owner's claim. however, the owner did not know why the brake lines rusted. the dealership advised that the owner that he would have to pay for the repair of rusted brake lines. the owner paid the repair cost. upon inspection of the vehicle the owner noticed the brake lines were only partially replaced. the cost of repairs was $894.78 for about 4 feet of brake lines.*ak

Brake system: while driving on avenue at 35-40mph, i crossed a railroad crossing while braking and brake pedal appeared to go to the point of least resistance, or near the floor board. also, while stopped at intersections, noticed brake pedal very slowly moving to the floor while foot on brake pedal. immediately took truck to the dealer service dept. and the service dept. diagnosed it as a leaking master cylinder. the master cylinder was replaced however i still notice brake pedal seeking point of least resistance while crossing railroad crossings and dips/moderate bumps in the road. i feel that this is a safety issue due to the fact that i bought this truck as a family truck and it carries my children on a regular basis. i feel that master cylinder should not have leaked at 822 miles. other issue>>> highway speed vibrations: truck has had a persistent highway speed vibration (40-45 mph and 60-70 mph). the truck was serviced for this problem on sept. 27 and oct. 5. sept. 27 they balanced the wheels. on oct. 5, they balanced the wheels again and suggested that the wheel weights are coming off causing unbalanced tires. wheel weights have remained intact as of this date but vibration still exist. the vibration feels like it starts at the rear of the truck and migrates through the truck to the steering column and wheel which on occasion has exhibited moderate to heavy shaking including seats and dash. while in turns at times and going over bumps, steering wheel shakes giving the sense of not in control. i feel this is a safety issue since vehicle shakes and vibrates while at highway speeds and something should be done to correct. the gm factory rep. would like to change the tires to the same brand, goodyear wranglers, however i suggested to him that the truck was in for vibration twice and i suggested swapping tires/wheels to see if this would solve problem and they indicated they did swap but it did not solve problem. this vehicle is not safe.
