Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. if both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper.
Consequence SummaryAnyone sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured could be injured by falling from the tailgate. on vehicles that have had the bumper removed, the tailgate may drop even lower. additionally, if there is cargo on the tailgate the cargo may fall off if the support cables fracture.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the cables. interim owner notification began on april 7, 20004. the recall began on september 24, 2004, when replacement parts were available, and will continue through october 29, 2004. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or visit www.mygmlink.com, and enter your vehicle identification number.

Defect SummaryCertain pickup trucks have galvanized-braided-steel tailgate support cables used to support the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position. over time these cables can corrode and fracture when loads are applied to them.
Consequence SummaryIf one cable fractures, the remaining cable may retain the tailgate in a horizontal position. if both cables fracture, the tailgate would drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper. if anyone is sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured, they could fall and be injured. on vehicles without a bumper, the tailgate may drop to a lower position.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the galvanized support cables with stainless steel support cables. in addition, dealers are to inspect the tailgate hinge and replace it, if necessary. the recall is expected to begin during april 2006. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

Consumer states the automatic lock is plainly visible whereas the manual lock is not, making the automatic lock the thiefs first choice and again the system in unarmed. when leaving the driver side or passenger window slightly open, intentionally or not, the location of the automatic door locks (facing upward on the armest), is such that a coat hanger bent through the opening can easily depress the automatic door lock, thereby disarming the vehicle making it possible to open the door from the outside without sounding the alarm to steal the contents. *tt

2000 gmc 1500-has broken frame above rear axle. truck has been used to tow trailer with tongue weight never over 700#,using hitch with 1000# rating.also installed is air bags between rear axle and frame, to allow leveling when trailer attached on hitch. no explanation recieved from dealer other than have never seen it happen.did say have seen it on dodge trucks. the dealer rep did not suggest how to repair or at what cost, they didn't seem interested in correcting the problem since the warranty was over by 2500 miles. so i took it to a general welder who quoted me $200 to $400 dollars to weld the frame and add a piece of steel to the frame to re-inforce this obvious place of stress. the welder also says he has seen this happen before and done these kind of repairs because none of the manufactured frames are re-inforced at the point of stress that would be put on a frame when weight is added as far back as a hitch. i am in the process of having these repairs done a thought other trailer hauling pick-up owners should be aware of this fault. this truck is rated for #8800 towing, with a #1000 rated tongue weight hitch. never have i had more than#5000 trailer weight with no more than &700 tongue weight, but the frame still cracked making this an un-known safety hazard. i could have been towing the trailer and the frame could have broken completley, dropped the trailer to groung causing seperation from the truck and than [what]?. your guess is good as mine.*ak
