Defect SummaryCertain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles may experience unwanted antilock brake system (abs) activation. this condition is more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas. this recall will be launched in the salt belt states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maryland, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia only.
Consequence SummaryThis can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. the recall began september 22, 2005. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

PE10010GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/30/201001/05/2011Brake line corrosion failure
The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure.odi's and gm's analysis indicates that 85 percent of the complaints occurred on vehicles used primarily in states that use salt on the roads during winter months (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).overall the complaint rates per 100,000 vehicles for salt belt states is 43.0 and non-salt belt is 3.0.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints the brake pipe failure occurred suddenly, with no warning (i.e., no mil, brake fluid loss warning), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 30 of these the increase in stopping distance that resulted was a factor in the crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-001) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

Front brake line failed. completely rusted, it blew out inside one the clips that hold it in place. horrible design. truck is sitting in my driveway because i cannot afford to repair brakes. estimate was over 1500, just to replace the lines, with coated steel, not stainless. fuel lines are all rusted as well. all need replacement.

While driving to work in the morning, applied brakes and the pedal seemed to go down further than normal. was exiting freeway and appied the brakes, the pedal went down to the floor but the vehicle stopped. i then pumped the brake pedal and it went to the floor and the vehicle started to roll. i was able to pull off to the side of the exit ramp and get vehicle to stop by putting it into reverse then park. it now had complete brake failure. after inspecting under the vehicle noticed that a brake line had rusted through and failed. this one line failure caused both the front and rear brakes not to apply at all. after inspecting further noticed that all the brake lines have severe corrosion and look like they could fail at anytime.

On 12/14/2012. i entered a controlled intersection, went to apply brakes and brake pedal went to floor. truck stopped, but i needed to apply a lot of pressure. checked brake fluid and found it was a pint low. added brake fluid, but brake pedal still needed to be pushed to floor to stop vehicle. brought truck to mechanic on 12/18/12. they put truck on lift, found entire brake system was corroded. the back plate was also corroded. to repair, all brake lines, bolts need to be replaced, as many parts have rusted away completely. estimate is over $4,000 to repair. *tr

Backed out of driveway and brake pedal felt soft. got to end of street and suspecting a problem began slowing early. brake pedal went to the floor with very little pressure and very little stopping power. went back to house and found a large puddle of brake fluid where the truck had been sitting. opened the hood to look at brake reservoir and found it empty but also realized all hard brake lines in view were heavily corroded and crusted. leak was from burst hard line below driver. all hard lines are heavily crusted and corroded near the point of failure if not already failed. some fuel lines also corroded. *tr

Anti-locking brakes - problem with abs brakes - as brakes applied on dry or wet surface, the worst brakes got, no matter if light or hard touch or slow or fast speed. gmc sierrra (2001) was brought in for repair after brakes failed causing slow speed collision with spouses pu truck in my driveway resulting in no damage or injuries. replaced one speed sensor (left front wheel) and cleaned other at my expense ($148.60 for parts, labor charge waived - mileage 35416). 2nd complaint or request - dragging brakes or locking and pulling when applied 3rd complaint or request - remove all four wheels and check brakes - results - repair include parts & labor at my expense - (mileage 41073) machine two front and two rear rotors and replace front and rear calipers plus free up slidders (parts $272, unknown breakdown on labor cost above and beyond).

Abs activates just before comming to complete stop.(5-8mph) abruptly extending stopping distance. problem showed up after truck was not driven for 4 days. probably allowing corrosion to develope. virginia did use large quantities of salt this year for ice and snow removal. currently experiencing this problem. not yet corrected. will see if removal, cleaning and lubrication of wheel sensors will solve problem.

I own a 2001 gmc sierra 4 wd pick-up with 45,000 miles that experienced anti-lock failure.the system would start pulsating at low speeds. i had many close calls(smashed in to my garage door once) before pulling the fuse as advised by the gm dealer.after further investigation i found that most everyone that i know with 99-2002 year gm vehicles had their fuses pulled as well. i called gm previously regarding other brake problems (anti-lock pump failure)(gm rotors that only last 6,000 mies) and the arrogant customer service personel try to convince you that they haven't had any complaints about their brake parts or systems and won't cover anything even though we know they are liars. i saw the nhtsa investigation notice and wanted to give my two cents. thanks for making these crooks correct a dangerous situation.

Abs front speed sensor right hand(passenger) side failure. when applying brakes our 2001 gmc sierra z71 at speeds below 5mph would act like the abs systems was kicking in for slippery road conditions. this would cause us not being able to stop when we would of liked to of stopped. this truck has only 35,000 miles of adult driven, easy, mostly non-town driving, so the brakes are not continually being applied. this is a very scary situation and we had to park this truck until we were able to get it into the shop and have it repaired. cost of repair $391.36. *ak

Upon starting the truck, the brake pedal went right to the floor and brake fluid drained under the drivers side door. a brake line rusted through causing a lack of braking power. there were no alarms prior to the failure. the truck is not drivable in this condition. none of the brakes grab and if this happened on the highway, someone would have been killed. upon examination, all of the brake lines are rusted and will need to be replaced. since gm does not manufacture replacement brake lines, each line will need to be bent and fitted by hand. i understand that nhsta is investigating the problem and says there are 6.2 million vehicles that are possibly affected.

Tl - the contact owns a 2001 gmc sierra. the contact stated that while backing out of his garage he tried to engage the breaks but it did not work. he mentioned that in order to stop the vehicle he had to shift to park. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the anti lock break sensors needed to be replaced under recall nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (component: service brakes, hydraulic:anti lock). a year later the vehicle was experiencing the same failure. the manufacturer was contacted who referred him back to the dealer to run a diagnostics test. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage 90,000 and current mileage was 100,000. pm

Anti lock braking kicks in when it should not. we have found where vehicles sold in certain states where recalled for this. pa is one of those states but our truck was not sold in pa until it was a year old. gm says the speed sensor is not covered due to the vin number. then they told me it was not covered due to mileage. but my point is if i had been notified of the recall seven years ago i would not be faced with an $1100.00 repair now. *tr

Brakes working poorly at slow speeds and abs engaging on dry pavement at stop signs. replaced all pads and rotors, still little change in braking. took vehicle to precision auto in mayville wi, to have them check brakes. technician keith pastorius recommended replacing abs sensors and hub assy's on both sides as this is a common problem on these trucks. charged $60.00 for scan tool diagnostics. (invoice#7964) i did research on the web and found recall 05v379000 matching same symptoms i have. i took vehicle to holiday auto, fon du lac wi they said it was definitely the sensors corroded, but my vin number was not included yet in the recall. they found document 1748482-wheel speed sensors need to be cleaned. they tried to remove sensors, and they broke. charged me $200.00 and said if the recall includes my vehicle in the next few months, i could be reimbursed. (invoice#257356) jan 27 2006. i feel this repair should be covered as a warranty recall (as did the service advisor at the dealer) because symptoms and defective parts are synonymous with other recall vehicles of the same year, and when the dealer drove the vehicle in they almost went through the service bay door from poor braking. thank you in advance for any investigating you do on my issue. i will be glad to help with any other information if necessary. *jb

My 2001 gmc sierra pick up truck 43k miles , brakes failed while attempting to come to a stop in the parking lot of the long beach 24hr family fitness center resulting in the vehicle hitting a wall on jan 11th 2006. i pushed the brake pedal to the floor and no brakes available. while foot on the brake trying to stop the vehicle, there came an indeterminate pulsing sound and vibration on the pedal. the vehicle hit the parking structure wall at a very slow speed (about 3-5 miles per hour). the truck is under an extended warranty and the dealer found the front left wheel bearing and hub to have excessive play and was replaced with my $100.00 deductible. the damage to the truck was totaled at $2828.20. this is still an issue and gm has told me that their is nothing wrong with the brake system, however there are recalls in the north east states for the same problem, and over 250+ cases reported in crashes. living by the ocean and where there is salt air present and with the 850k trucks recalled makes sense. gm can recall all of the trucks for tailgate support cables nation wide that are caused by corrosion but not a brake problem that effects trucks nation wide? *nm

In 2001 my wife and i purchased a new 2001 gmc sierra 1500 (vin #2gtek19t111129096). we hadn't had the vehicle long, roughly 20,000 miles, before we noticed an intermittent tapping feeling when attempting to brake. not only did the brake tap, but it would not slow the vehicle properly and you would have to pump the brake. i thought it could have been the abs, but was not sure. we had the vehicle checked out by our local dealer who advised there was no problem. the problem with the braking persisted. last year sometime we heard of a canadian recall due to the abs system activating improperly. we contacted the dealer who advised it was a recall in canada and not the u.s.; therefore they would not do anything. we recently heard of a recall in the u.s. for the same problem. after calling the dealer we were informed that our vin was out of a different factory than that of the recall. i was also informed during this call that gm would not fix the problem until mandated to do so by the federal government. having two young children i do not feel my vehicle is safe and believe gm should have voluntarily fixed the problem with the brakes, as i believe this is the same problem that has triggered the recent recalls. however, gm, specifically mckay motors a gmc dealership, refuses to address the issue until mandated by a governing authority. i am asking that you consider an investigation into my vehicles factory and ultimately a recall to fix the problem we are experiencing. *jb

My 2001 gmc sierra 1500 (vin 1gtek19t31e136226) was recalled for unwanted abs brake system activation. i paid for the same repair ($363.20) out of my own pocket last oct. 28, 2004. recently they started acting up again and the recall notice came out. (campaign #05v379000). i took my truck nov. 2, 2005 to harbor pontiac buick gmc, 9911 w. 300 north, michigan city, indiana. they confirmed that the sensors were bad and replaced them. they then told me that the problem still existed and that it would cost me $85 just to put it on the computer to check what the problem may be. they then told me that if it was the abs module, it will cost me $1,111.99 to replace it. i am a mechanic and feel that if the module is bad, the defective sensors caused it and i should not have to pay for it. my vehicle is still doing the exact same thing it was recalled for. i feel they should have to do whatever it takes to fix it at no cost to me. in addition, when i took it in yesterday for the repairs they only had (1) sensor in stock and refused to let me take the truck home for liability reasons. but today they are telling me that i can take it even though it is still doing the same thing it was recalled for. i can't aford to pay what they want to fix it so i am forced to drive it the way it is.

The breaks on my 2001 gmc 1500 sierra began kicking back during stops on dry clean pavement near the end of the stop. this caused me on numerous occasions to nearly hit cars in front of me at stop signs and in parking lots. i also use this vehicle for work around my property and have nearly run into trees and equipment near my vehicle. i took the vehicle to a local dealer, hawkins chevrolet oldsmobile, inc. and was told the abs speed sensor was corroded and not working properly. they replaced the abs sensors on the two front wheels on 8/17/05 under invoice ctcs85615. i was especially concerned with this problem as my other vehicle, a 2002 chevrolet suburban began to have this same problem at the same time. i had two vehicles which were unsafe to drive at the same time. i filed a complaint with nhtsa about the suburban (odi number 10132681) on 8/12/05 and also contacted gm customer service. i was denied any help with my problem and was given a file number 1-355599627 and therefore did not contact customer service about my sierra truck. i conducted some internet research and found that these model type vehicles in the years 1999 to 2002 were recalled in canada for this same problem. i also spoke to my sister's family about their 1999 gmc sierra and were told that they too have replaced these sensors, but did not file a complaint with nhtsa or gm. *nm

Disc rotor delamination, anti-lock control. i was pulling a 3/4 ton van stuck in his yard, as i got him close to the hard surface ( driveway) i put on the brakes and the truck wouldn't stop, it hit the corner of his block house. no damage to the house however i had to replace all but hood and one headlight assy. 10 mph and neither bag deployed. i thought it was my own stupidity until reading all the issues on here w/ gm's braking problems. i feel a bit better about myself. the big issue !! all four rotors delaminated w/ 46,000 miles this is the 1st new truck i've owned and believe me it's been babied for sure. i was told by my service dealer there was nothing gm would do about this problem it was my problem for not driving it as much as i should (b.s.) dealer wanted to charge me a grand to replace all the rotors and pads i did it for 500.00 and still have the old parts. i'm sure gm should issue a recall on this, it is a definite safety issue did i fail to mention the muffler had a rattle in it and was replaced within the 1st 1000 miles, the thump in the steering column that has no way to be lubricated. man i am disappointed in gm products. *jb

Contact states: contact is having problem with brakes at slow speeds when he slows down the abs kicks in and experiences extends stopping distance. no prior warning. only does it like at speeds of 15 mph and under. this has almost caused two accidents. dealer admitted that one of his mechanics did fix another gmc sierra for the same problem. the abs problem caused the mechanic to hit the dock door at the dealer station because the vehicle would not stop. dealer said that they had more problems with this vehicle in snowy weather due to salt on the sensor.*ak on a daily basis abs brakes pulsate and increase consumer's breaking distance at slow speeds. consumer had several close accidents which were a result of the failed abs brakes. *sb *nm

While braking at a stop light, my 2001 gmc sierra 2500hd, proceeded to slide into the car in front, light snow was on the ground and a little wet, speed was about 25 miles an hour less at impact, is this related to the investigation for gm trucks ? also this past year at a stop sign, when i was braking the abs kick in but the petal went to the floor, low speed but i had to put in neutral and take evasive action to prevent entering the intersection and missed stricking a car?

Drivind down 1603 east bound approaching stop light and felt small ripples in the road and anti lock system kicked in and was unable to stop in time and hit a full size 2001 to 2004 chevy pick up in the rear bumper. no injuries and crash was between 10 and 20 mph and an estimate of damage between the 2 vehicles was 2000.00 to 2500.00. as of may 3 2005 i am having the brakes serviced and sensors checked. after reading the article on the internet about a possibility of a problem with the anti-lock system i thought it might have just been a fluke being that this happened on dry pavement and sunny conditions.

Contact states: at very low speed anti lock brakes would kick in when consumer would brake instead of braking the vehicle would keep moving, it doesn't matter what the weather condition is. it has been repaired at contact's expense. contact called gm, they said it needed two new hubs, including the bearings (left and right). gm covered 1/2 of the cost. dealer diagnosed it without even looking at the vehicle because they had seen this before.*ak

Low speed abs activation, the abs braking system engages at low speed and the truck will not stop when it is suppose to. this has happened on several occosians and has resulted in several close calls for accidents. the problem is that the brakes will not stop the truck like they should because abs engages. there is absolutly no reason for the abs to be engaging. have seen multiple reports of this same issue on gm trucks.*ak

 1. have had several failures of abs system in my 2001 gmc sierra 4x4. there were no exact events leading up to this problem. 2. failures have not resulted in any major accidents, but have come close to causing accidents either solo or with other vehicles because the vehicle did not want to stop. i have fishtailed because of this, almost hit a pole, almost hit other vehicles, etc. the abs should engage and stop me, but when i brake hard for any reason, the brake peddal goes to the floor and i don't stop like i should. this is at highway speeds as well as residential (<25 mph) speeds! at no time did i have any pre-warning of an impending failure. my truck is equiped with the service/warning computer on the dash, and at no time did it ever state there was a problem or pending problem with my abs system. the damn thing tells me when it's time for an oil change, but when it comes to something as important as my brakes it does nothing. 3. while under warranty, i had the same code show up on my vehicle and had the same parts replaced and the same diagnosis of a short in the abs system. this is not the only electrical short i have had in the system (4x4 light and other warnings have come up for no reason before, but never anything with the abs), but it is the one that i am most concerned about. now that i am out of warranty, and gmc didn't want to do anything about this problem (ie let me exchange the truck while it was still newer, or extend my warranty, etc.), i am complaining strongly because the failure is back. i have had problems with this truck from day one of having it, starting with a radiator leak, transmission u-joint was worn on delivery and had to be replaced, on to the dealer swapping my wheels and tires for ones off a different truck, electrical shorts that cause other warnings to come on that aren't real problems, the window guide is broken...but never once did the abs warning come on! i feel this truck is a lemon and should be replaced!*ak

I am complaining and asking for further investigation into abs brake activations on my 2001 gmc 1500 sierra. i read an article that many failures were occurring and that this was being investigated. gm has recalled vehicles in canada along the rust belt i heard. i live in michigan and go through similar weather issues as canada and feel that the brake problems are also the same as the canadian issues. my abs brakes will activate almost daily and my vehicle is just outside of the warranty. i would encourage further investigation into this issue as clearly the same thing that has occurred in canada is also occurring here as well. with the added stopping distance as a result of the abs/brake failures, i do not want to see a senseless accident occur which could cause damage, injury or god forbid any deaths. please feel free to contact me at home if you need further. thank you for your time. marco a. hernandez olivet, mi (269) 749-9295

Steering wheel jerks in hand when depressing brakes while making a right hand turn. this can be duplicated with the vehicle idling in neutral or park. dealership attempted to fix problem on 01/25/02 by replacing the power steering pump and brake booster. when i attempted to pick up my truck on the 25th, i was notified by marcus that they had not found the problem and that they considered the problem a safety issue, i wasn't allowed to have the vehicle but was given a loaner to drive. my vehicle was returned on the 29th and i was told that since the dealership could duplicate the problem on another new vehicle on the lot, gm had determined it was not a problem but a characteristic of this vehicle with the power assist. i contact gm customer assistance to make them aware of my concern with the safety of this vehicle but to no avail. i asked them to document my concerns. it is apparent that the dealership was initially concerned that there was a safety issue with this vehicle or they would have returned it on the 25th. i am concerned with gm's response that this is a characteristic of the vehicle just because some others exhibit the same problem. i was just recently made aware of your website and would greatly appreciate your assistance with this matter. thank you! scott
