Defect Summary | Certain sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and passenger vans fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 135, ?passenger car brake systems.? some of these vehicles were produced with an out-of-specification brake hydro-boost housing relief valve bore.
Consequence Summary | Consequently, the valve o-ring seal may fracture. steering efforts may be slightly increased while braking or parking. under certain driving conditions, a fractured seal may require a slight increase in the applied brake pedal effort to achieve the same vehicle deceleration rate as prior to the seat fracture.
Corrective Summary | Dealers are to replace the hydro-boost relief valve. the recall began on june 18, 2004. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339; chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; gmc at 1-866-996-9463; or hummer at 1-866-486-6376.

PE10010 | GENERAL MOTORS CORP. | 03/30/2010 | 01/05/2011 | Brake line corrosion failure
The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure.odi's and gm's analysis indicates that 85 percent of the complaints occurred on vehicles used primarily in states that use salt on the roads during winter months (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).overall the complaint rates per 100,000 vehicles for salt belt states is 43.0 and non-salt belt is 3.0.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints the brake pipe failure occurred suddenly, with no warning (i.e., no mil, brake fluid loss warning), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 30 of these the increase in stopping distance that resulted was a factor in the crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-001) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

As i applied the brakes, the brake pedal went to the floor and my vehicle did not stop. thankfully there were no cars coming as i went through the stop sign. my brake indicator lights came on on the dash. i was able to lemp the truck back the 1.5 miles to my house. now i am learning that this has been a common problem with the gmc's. i have taken it to a shop and they have informed me that all the lines are rusted and brittle!

Entered parked truck in personal driveway. applied brakes prior to stating and petal went to the floor with no warning. opened hood and noticed big puddle of brake fluid in driveway. added more brake fluid only to see it leak right back out on the ground.contacted repair station, had truck towed. i was notified by the repair station that there was severe brack line rust and they could only complete a partial repair at a local area of the broken brakeline due to the major cost involved!

First incident was a brake line bursting in my driveway. i had it repaired at my local garage. at that time he told me that all of the brake lines were in bad shape. second incident, while i was driving up the road at approx 55 mph with my 19' boat in tow i realized i had no steering or brakes. i was able to coast to a stop and pull the vehicle off the road to a safe location. the failure was attributed to a rotted line to the power steering cooler. lastly, i am not able to get a safety inspection sticker because my brake lines in such bad condition. estimated cost to repair $800-$1500 dollars. i will add that the truck looks like new, spends most of it's time in the garage and is used primarily to go to the local dump, plow my driveway only and occasionally tow my boat to the lake! mileage reflects this.dates may not be totally accurate but the best of my recollection. *tr

Due to corrosion the brakes line burst causing a complete braking failure - no warning lamps illuminated!!! the lines corroded completely in the holders which attach to the vehicles frame. under moderate stopping pressure the lines burst! all metal lines need to be replaced from the front of the vehicle to the rear. truck has never been exposed to extreme weather or salt while in my ownership. this is completely and utterly unacceptable. *tr

The rear brake pads squealed & were grinding & the truck had very poor stopping power. the truck was taken to my mechanic & he was doing the brake job; he replaced all four rotors because they were rusted beyond repair. the pads were replaced as well. while he was doing the brakes he observed the brake lines were rusted to a point that it alarmed him & he said they should be changed. he also commented that the brakes had worn very uneven. the front pads were barely worn & were only making contact at a small area of the rotor (about 1/2 of the full face on the rotor). the back pads & rotors were completely worn down & the rotors were ruined. some of the areas under the truck look as new & other places; mainly the a-frames, brake lines, some frame members, etc. look like they are 15 years or more older. the brakes were put back together & now they are so tight & won't release the rotors, causing the rotors to over heat. i am now having him replace the back two calipers with replacement calipers that use phenolic pistons rather than steel & are not gm parts.

I purchased a 2003 gmc sierra (used) -checked it out after a mechanic told me about brake line problems. my truck has extremely bad rust on the portions of line i can see (looks like clamshells opening). i have done some research and have found you have an open investigation on this problem. i own 1966 and 1980 vehicles with original tubing in better condition.my question to you is simple. a recall was issued for aftermarket fuel filters that may leak and catch on fire if you park over an ignition source but no recall on a major issue concerning brakes. i am pretty sure more people use their brakes more often than people change fuel filters. p.s. my neighbor has a 2005 dodge that had a line rupture-lucky for him he was in his driveway!

While riding with a friend in his 2001 silverado pickup, i noticed what seemed to be a grinding sound from the brakes just before the truck came to a stop. about a week ago, around nov. 1st. my 2003 gmc sierra pickup started making the same grinding sound, (anti-lock activation). this happens on clear, dry pavement with no reason for the anti-lock system to activate. this problem does not occur every time i stop and i have not been able to make this happen during intentional hard stops. i notice that my stopping distance is extended when this happens. it is my understanding that gm has had a recall in canada for this issue but has not had enough complaints in the us to initiate a recall. my truck has 37,000 miles on it at this time. *jb

Dt: the contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 2500 hd/diesel. the contact complained about a steering problem.. the steering vibrated when making lower speed turns. this happened when moving or sitting still. it has been fixed approximately 4 times, and it recurred after about 3,000 miles. at 10,000 miles when applying the brakes the steering locked. also, when applying the brakes the contact lost the brake pedal, it got soft and spongy. they did not pulsate. also, this affected the steering, the vibration in the steering, and the brakes, which were separate issues. the dealer could not duplicate the problem. he said there was a service bulletin concerning this issue, but the contact's vehicle vin was not included. *ak
