Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. the automatic transmission pressure control solenoid valve seals do not remain sufficiently elastic, resulting in transmission fluid leakage. this leakage can result in reduced pressure application to the clutches, brake, and kickdown servo, allowing them to slip.
Consequence SummarySuch slippage can cause premature deterioration of the friction element surfaces and could cause the vehicle not to accelerate, or not accelerate as expected, when the driver presses the accelerator pedal.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the pressure control solenoid valve.

I noticed when i got my car that is did not have good acceleration, but i figured that it was just because it only had 85 horse power it is a 99 hyundai accent. it also hitched when you would go to step on the gas. as time went on it worsened. then one day without any warning i went to back up and i heard a huge thunking noise. i had lost reverse in my transmission and it did not shift well into first or second would not shift into 3rd or over drive. i then looked up to see if there were any recalls on my transmission and i found out that there were starting 20 days after mine was manufactured. i would like proof that they were using different solenoid valves when 20 days before the recall started because i think that it was a manufacturing defect not operators. the car only has 110736 miles on it. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated two years ago the vehicle would not come out of second gear. an independent mechanic repaired the vehicle. the contact does not know what repairs were performed. about one month ago, the transmission started slipping into second gear. the only way to get the vehicle out of second gear is to turn the vehicle off, wait a few minutes, and restart the vehicle. the same independent mechanic determined the vehicle had a defect and referred the contact to the nhtsa. there is an nhtsa recall, # 99v178000, regarding the automatic transmission. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.

We own a 1999 hyundai accent. bought brand new from dealership. have had numerous problems with car, currently transmission problems. have taken car to dealership, problem supposedly not under warranty, but charged us numerous times. got on internet and found numerous recalls on this make of car. we have never received a recall notice regarding any of the problems. would like to know how to go about obtaining these recalls, should be free from car company, and how to get this car repaired. auto transmission not shifting properly, been going on for over 8 months, no one seems to know what is wrong with it. there are several recalls associated with this problem. why were we not informed about the recalls, and why did't the dealership know about the recalls to fix the problem to begin with. please help!!! we have taken to 4 or 5 mechanics, no one able to help.*ak

I bought my car in september of 1999 from a car dealership. over a year ago my transmission starting slipping i brought it back to the dealership under warrenty they said it was a sensor and replaced it. just 2 days ago my check engine light came on and i now longer had 4th gear and 3rd would slip in and out. i learned there was a recall and that the dealership was supposed to replace this sensor before i bought the car and again when i brought it in last year. this is a big hassle not to mention my check airbag light is also on and my alternater went on the fritz a few months ago. this car is too new for these problems and i dont think i will ever buy another hyundai again.*ak

The vehicle is a 1999 hyundai accent and i purchased it new. on july 2, 2004 i got in my car and turned it on. when i tried to put the car in reverse it would not move. the gear shift is stuck in 'park' and will not move unless the override switch is depressed. a technical service bulletin was issued by hyundai for this exact issue (#99-40-017), so they already know that the problem exists. but, the dealerships i contacted in my area will not fix the problem because my car has a little over 80,000 miles and is no longer under warranty. i contacted hyundai consumer affairs and they also said i would be responsible for paying for the repairs even though i never caused the problem. *nm

Car has been in hyundai dealership in thousand oaks, ca 4 times this year with exact same problem. it feels like transmission to me. (i have automatic) when on interstate, rpm's will go high and car won't shift. at stop light, car will sit without my foot on brake or gas and not move. extreme pushing on gas pedal to get car to accelerate is needed. everytime in dealership they say it was some sort of sensor. this last time 12/4/03 they said they won't replace my transmission yet and will change some computer chip in transmission. they said your car is safe to drive. i took my car home with it doing the same problem. on my way to work that night my engine light came on and car doing same problem. left work in am straight to dealership (within 4 mi) and told the head guy. he said he knew me and my car and didn't want to help. what do you want me to do? he said. i said i'm not driving my car. he said do you want to leave it hear? i said yes. i told him my engine light has never come on before and now it is on. he said you have driven you car with the engine light on before. i said never, my light has never come on before. i left with a loaner car which he was reluctant to give me because i wasn't supposed to get that until 12/9/03 when i was to bring in my car to have the chip replaced (they had to order it). my car clearly unsafe to drive, they won't listen to me. i know of a recall #99v178000. they haven't looked into this. it came july 06/ 1999. i bought my car around 7/13/99. no written or phone call to me regarding this recall. i took my car in for the recall #v03 manifold and there wasn't a problem with this. *la

In march of 2004 the transmission in my car, a 99 hyundai accent, started slipping. i took it into the dealership, sycamore chevrolet in terre haute, indiana, which i bought the car to be serviced since it was still under warrenty. they charged me $350 for parts and labor, after i told them that if the problem wasnt warrenty not to do anything since i had no money at the time. they told me they changed the 2nd gear belt, a clutch sensor, and the transmission filter and fluid because the seal holding it together was bad. 2 weeks later i take it back. they tell me they cant find the problem and even accuse me of making it up. after i left there with my car i took it to a shop in paris. he took it for a drive came back and changed the transmission filter himself and showed me that the filter on my car was so clogged that nothing was getting through. it ran fine until about 3 weeks ago. since then i have had it in 2 more shops. a sensor in my transmission is going out and they have yet to pinpoint which one it is. come to find out after looking through this site and a couple others, my transmission was recalled after i bought it for the same problems im having in it now. its slipping out of gear during acceleration and downshifting hard and sticking when coming to a stop. i never received notice about this recall and no one has mentioned it when ive brought it in. i have been stranded for hours when my transmission is stuck in 1st. i have had 5 very close calls when im driving down the road and it slips out of gear, 2 of them being while semis are behind me. i do not feel safe driving my car so i am now being left without a vehicle and 2 years left to pay on it. hyundia usa in california has been notified about my complaint with their service and about my car and all i was offered was a $75 credit to my account with any hyundai rep. they deny that there was a problem with the transmission even after i have found proof on here of the recall. *ak

We brought this car in may 0f 1999. at 4,000 miles the transmission blew a large hole and almost caused us too have an accident. this problem was fixed for us, at no cost to us. under warranty. on 12/30/99 we had the car towed to the dealer because the car was making a clicking noise. when they did an inspection they told us that the car need a new transmission. they told us that this time it was because of abuse. the car is driven by myself, my husband & also my son. this repair we had to pay for. my concern is that we think that hyundai should honor the warranty, and refund us the money that we paid already for the repair. we think that this is a defect on the transmission and we should not have to pay for this. *ak
