Tl*the contact owns a 2007 hyundai accent. the contact stated that the air bag light was illuminated on the driver side. she took the vehicle to the dealer, but they did not recognize the error codes and just turned off the air bag light. the contact was informed that the vehicle was safe to drive. in december of 2007, the light illuminated again. the service department cleaned the connection and cleared the codes. on january 14, 2008, the failure recurred a third time. the dealer cleared the error codes and ordered parts for the seat belts, which regulated the air bag sensor. the light illuminated again a couple of days later and the dealer installed the part for the sensor. next, the passenger side air bag light began illuminating intermittently. when the contact who is 5'7 and 118 lbs would sit in the passenger seat, the light would illuminate. the dealer stated that they could not provide weight regulations (the weight someone should be for the light not to illuminate). they further stated that they could perform a diagnostic on the vehicle. consumer affairs stated that the air bag sensor should engage at 130-140 lbs, while another representative stated the air bag sensor should engage somewhere between 90 and 120 lbs. another department agreed with consumer affairs regarding the weight. as of january of 2008, there was moisture in the tail lights, which could cause poor illumination. the dealer replaced them, but informed the contact that the failure may recur. in addition, the battery failed and the dealer stated that there was something possibly draining the battery when the vehicle was off. the battery was tested and appeared to be fine. the current mileage was 11,070 and failure mileage was 3,452. updated 05/12/08 *bf the thermostat and gasket were replaced. the check engine light illuminated. there was condensation in both tail lights, a noise was heard when shifting into reverse, there was a rattle/clunk when turning corners. updated

I purchased a new hyundai accent on 07/17/07 and discovered on 07/18/07 that the airbag sensor for the front seat passenger will not activate for a passenger that is 5'7 tall and 115 lbs. the airbags (front & side) will not deploy in the event of a crash because the sensors installed in the seat do not recognize a person of this stature. the vehicle was brought in for service 3 times for the same problem and in an independent study done by dealership management, 3 out of 10 times the sensor did not detect a person of this stature. this was tested on a floor model in the showroom with the same results. hyundai engineering department has refused to proceed with a claim for defect and stated to me that a person of this size needed to ride as a backseat passenger. they advised no further action would be taken and determined the sensor was working within manufacturer's guidelines. there is no written guideline for weigh standards and this is clearly a safety issue that i refuse to accept. updated 01/11/08. *lj updated *jb

I purchased a 2007 hyundai accent on may 12, 2007. on the day i purchased the vehicle i realized that the passenger air bag would not activate when my fiance sat in the seat. we pointed this issue out to the salesman , and he suggested i bring the car in on monday to get the sensor checked out. i brought the car in to the dealership service department on may 14, 2007. the service department could not find any problem with the sensor. later that day i had my fiance sit in the passenger seat again the sensor still did not recognized her as large enough to activate the air bag system. i went back to the dealership service department on may 17, 2007 to have them look at the sensor again. they indicated that there was nothing they could do because their system showed the sensor as operating properly. i then called hyundai manufacturing consumer affairs office to discuss the problem. hyundai manufacturer's current position was that the sensor was functioning properly. however, i have done some research on the compliance requirements for the advanced passenger air bag systems. the results of my research showed that my car was not in compliance with either of the testing methods available for the manufacturer to use. i was awaiting for a final response on the problem from hyundai. *ak
