Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, the parking brake can self-release without warning.
Consequence SummaryThis could allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a parking brake assembly with a stronger pawl return spring. owner notificaton began september 30, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

 Consumer stated that the dealer is taking to long to perform the recall#02v041000 emergency brake. jeep 1800-992-1997 please provide the address. ts

 Per manufacturer's system , recall 02v041000 for the parking brakes was already performed. upon inspection of the vehicle by the dealership, the recall on the parking brake was never done. *ak the dealer returned the vehicle without correcting the parking brake pedal assembly recall. the parking may self release without warning allowing unintended vehicle movement resulting in injury or accident. the consumer had not been contacted by the dealer or manufacturer regarding the issue. *scc *jb

 Vehicle was parked at a slight incline with engine off. after a few minutes consumer went back to vehicle and noticed it had rolled down the street and hit another parked vehicle. jeep had $3000 damage, other vehicle was totaled. afterward, consumer started using emergency brake, and noticed once applying pedal, it stayed down, but after a few minutes pedal would pop back up on its own. dealer found nothing wrong with emergency brake.*ak *yh
