Uncontrollable wobble in front axle/wheels and shaking of steering wheel.

At 53 mph the front end starts what is well known as a death wobble. this is a very well known problem that jeep needs to do a recall on and fix. my jeep shakes so bad it will jerk the steering wheel out of your hands. *tr

Now that have forced chrysler to recall jeep models for airbag problems how about forcing jeep/chrysler to recall and fix jeep for the death wobble. i first experienced this last year. at about 50mph the vehicle began to shake violently. i thought i was in a blender. i checked the internet and jeep forum and found this to be a common problem with jeep wranglers. i even checked with the jeep dealer here in oklahoma and was told it could be the ball joints, steering cylinder and/or even worn tires. he even acknowledged the problem. my mechanic said the ball joints were good... the tires just ok. but steering cylinder would probably need replacing. so i paid $145.00 to the jeep/chrysler dealer for a new steering cylinder. turns out the one i purchased was much bigger then the one i replaced. it still shook a little until i replaced the tires at another $650.00. this needs to be investigated. i hope you will look into this. please before someone gets hurt and maybe already has. thanks *tr

At around 45mph my front wheels starts to wobble back and forth violently causing me to have to hit the brakes to get the shaking to stop. the steering wheel also wobbles back and forth making it hard to steer. this is a hazard as it happens in traffic and could cause me to be rearended. also a driver could panic and wreck as a result. vehicle has no suspension modification. tires have been balanced and vehicle has proper alignment. i believe this to be the phenomenon known as death wobble. *tr

I have been experiencing the death wobble on my jeep since i bought it used in 2007. it only occurs when i am between the speed of 45 and 50 mph. my jeep shakes so violently i have to grab the steering wheel to hold it straight and decrease my speed dramatically to get it to stop. i've read 1000's of other complaints online - i know i'm not the only one with this issue. it was still under warranty at the time and i took it to the dealership and had several repairs done. they replaced the steering dampener and front axle. i was told that after that when it still occurred that i needed different tires - so i spent $600.00 on new tires and it still happens. doesn't have all the time - but enough to where i feel unsafe. this is my only vehicle and i cannot afford to get a new car right now but if i could i would!!! i called jeep and filed a complaint and they gave me a case number and told me that i had to pay for a diagnostic test to be done and after that they would help me with some of the costs of the repairs. they told me someone would be in touch within 24 hours to schedule the diagnostic (which i think i shouldn't have to pay for since i took it years ago and its never been fixed) but i've never heard from anyone. jeep needs to open their eyes-- what has to happen before they act on this? an accident? hopefully this complaint can be used to warn others not to buy a jeep product. ## vin passed ## jeep wrangler 2006 ## *tr

While driving the jeep wrangler on a smooth pavement @ 55mph the steering wheel began shaking violently and the entire vehicle was shaking. it seemed as if both front wheels were loose. i immediately braked, pulled off the highway to a complete stop. upon finding nothing loose i proceeded down the highway, upon reaching 55mph the vehicle repeated the shaking. i have replaced the track bar, steering dampener, front brake rotors, brake pads, new tires, wheels checked with calipers, and 2 alignments. i still cannot exceed 55mph without the violent shaking. *tr

On friday, 07.27.12, when driving on the highway, the vehicle began to shake/wobble wildly, and i thought that i had a blowout in the right front tire. i pulled over on the shoulder, but, to my surprise, the tire was fine, and i could see no visible problems. i proceeded down the highway, but, after about a mile, the vehicle began to shake/wobble wildly again (almost uncontrollably), to the point where i literally thought the right front wheel was falling off. luckily, i was able to pull to the shoulder without causing an accident. i drove slowly along the shoulder, exited the highway at the next opportunity, and called the dealership. after making sure that the lug-nuts were tight, i drove (via city streets, to minimize speed) back to the dealership. the service technician determined that the problem was wheel balancing. that said, when i hit a bump in the road, the vehicle's right front end still wobbles. in the interim, i did some google'ing, and i found that numerous other (?death wobble?) cases have been reported nationwide (including hundreds to the nhtsa). chrysler has issued multiple tsbs, and there is a maintenance notice acknowledging ?steering vibration? (a monumental euphemism; the issue goes way beyond a simple vibration) on the jeep website. in short, chrysler is well-aware of the existence and severity of this problem. the matter has been addressed by a san francisco tv station (kgo-tv), and even two members of the u.s. congress who sent inquiries/complaints to both chrysler. despite all of the first-hand accounts, publicity, and requests for action, the nhtsa has done nothing. this is clearly a design flaw/defect, and the nhtsa needs to force chrysler to issue a safety recall. jeep owners need to be made aware of the existence/possibility of this dangerous condition, and chrysler should incur the costs of its diagnosis and correction. *tr

Experience dangerous front wheel wobble when minor pavement bumps or deformations are hit at between 40-45mph. was fixed once several years ago at owner expense by dealer (replace front dampner). now is showing early signs of the deficiency returning at less than 50,000 miles. tires are very well maintanined and are rotated / balanced per tire manufacturer recommendation (complete receipts available). vehicle has very low (almost non-existent) off-road use. i am the original owner of the vehicle and have a completely documented history. i also have over 34 years driving experience. the front dampner should not require replacement every 20-25k miles at around $450 / per occurrance. this appears to be a regularly reoccurring problem over several years with almost all wranglers. if this doesn't warrant a recall, what exactly does???? come on now....

While driving around 35 miles per hour on the interstate my vehicle began to shake. this shaking began to increase over a period of about 10 seconds. the entire vehicle was shaking violently at this point, requiring that i slow down in order to regain control of my vehicle. this shaking continued to occur whenever i accelerated about 35 mph on a random basis.

The car experienced violent front end wobble when going over uneven pavement, more severe when brakes were applied. the dealer said that the brake rotors were warped and replaced them (there was only approx. 11,000 miles on the car at that time, which i had bought new). the problem reoccured off and on, but to a lesser degree. the problem reoccured in the summer of 2009, with less than 20,000 miles driven. i had the front stabelizer bar replaced on 9-3-11. the problem continues to occur sometimes to a lesser degree and sometimes to a greater degree depending on vehicle speed. when the wobble is severe, control of the jeep is difficult, with one instance of going off of the road until i slowed down to approximatel 30 mph and regained control.

My 2006 jeep wrangler shakes so bad it is scary. at 45-65 mph and for no reason start shaking violently. i spent $1600.00 on new parts. new shocks, new rims, new steering damper, new traking bar.new camber, new bushing, new control arms. nothing works. i must pull off the highway to make it stop. this jeep is dangerous!!!!

I want to report an issue with my jeep wrangler 2006. i bought this car from jeep in annapolis maryland jeep 2006 with 9,343 miles on it. two months later it began shaking uncontrollably at 50-55 mph. only at this speed. this is very scary when it happens and have almost gone off the road. the only way to stop it is to accelerate to higher speed or to slow down. i took it back to the dealer where i purchased the vehichle and they did a an alignment. the shaking stopped and 1 month later it started again. a year later, of just putting up with this i bring the jeep back to the dealer. they tell me that the cause is from worn tie rods and steering damper worn. if this is the cause of the shake then they should have told me this a year ago. i think the worn parts are a result from the shake. not the cause. either way , the jeep now has 26,000 miles and i'm already being told to put 2000 dollars into it for worn parts. these parts are wearing prematurely because of the shake but no one can determine the cause. if i had bought the car new , i could have used the lemon law but unfortunately, i bought it with low mileage used. this is a very dangerous situation and wondering if it will take a death for someone to recall these like the problem with toyota accelerator. its very frustration, and the average person does not have the time or money to fight something like this. i have seen so many people with the same complaints on the internet. something should be done.

2006 jeep wrangler. not lifted. severe death wobble between approx. 40-50 mph. this issue is prevalent and dangerous enough to warrant recall. jeep should fix this design issue immediately before loss of life occurs. the nhtsa must force the issue immediately, as jeep has known about the design flaw since approximately 1997. why has this not been addressed/resolved?
05/16/201045000
Traveling at 55 mph hit a slight bump on the road and the front end started wobble from side to side. the steering wheel shook side to side very quickly. the only way to get this to stop was to slow down to a speed of approximately 40 mph.

The dw's, a defect jeep refuses to address. tell me where jeep has publicly addressed this wide and well known problem for their consumers. enough with the band-aids!! because i did not bring my jeep in for a 30,000 ml check up (eventhough i was only at 28,000) my dealer told me my warranty would be null and void. although, i had no idea what the engine had to do with the steering, i was unable to get him to discuss the problem any further. rotate your tires for you, that's all i can do was what i was told. so, after throwing money at my jeep to try and fix it this way or that way (btw my jeep is entirely stock) the only thing i've found to rid the problem is to replace my tires every 25,000 ml or so and rotate every 5,000 ml. so, if you don't mind buying new tires every two years or so, problem solved. if this a problem jeep is telling you that you can pretty much suck it!

2006 jeep wrangler and the death wobble. jeep has know about this condition for some time now and since my warranty is up and they could not find the problem before it was up, i am now stuck with it or pay alot of money for a issue that should have been addressed years ago by jeep. every time i hit a small bump in the road at 60mph the jeep goes out of control and shakes the vehicle until you can come to a complete stop in the road and then its fine. all you have to do is google jeep and death wobble and you will see how many complaints are out there.

Front end shakes and shimmies since i got it in sept 06, taken to see why, and of course i been told it is this that or the other, and the problem has not been resolved, i have replaced tires, brake and calipers, shocks, stabilizer shocks, have had the front end lined due to the shaking and shimmy, if there was a recall on this vehicle i was never notified on this matter . the vehicle in question 2006 jeep wrangler .

For me, this problem has not resulted in a crash or injury. however it could lead to the above if not resolved by the manufacture. problem is, when driving my 2006 jeep wrangler and a bump is encountered, such as a pot hole, a man hole cover, expansion joints etc. the front wheels go in to a very severe left to right oscillation. to recover from this one must come to almost a complete stop. a little hard to do at 60mph in the middle of the freeway. chrysler says that the fix is a new steering damper, at the owner's expense. this is a known issue among the jeep community, called the death wobble.i believe this is too much of a safety issue for the manufacture to resolve at their expense via a recall. someone is going to get killed.

Car has a bad clunking noise in the steering box. only has 15000 on the vehicle, many other people i have talked to on jeepforum.com have the same issue. when turning the wheel from side to side you hear a constant clunking noise from the front end, always being traced back to the steering box. all front end components are in perfect shape, as told by a mechanic.

Driving a 2006 jeep wrangler unlimited at speeds from 45-55 mph causes death wobble where the vehicle shakes violently and steering is unable to be controlled. nothing has been done to correct; yet, if you google the problem it is serious and rampant. happens every time that speeds reach 45-55 mph.

2006 jeep wrangler: at about 10,000 miles, i noticed that a shudder started to develop in my front end and would vibrate up through the steering wheel at around 45 mph. it does not always occur at 40 mph usually between 40 and 60 after hitting a bump. now, at 22,000 miles, i have a violent shudder between 40 and 60 mph, that it feels like i am about to lose control of the vehicle. my wife was driving on a major highway and hit a bump at about 55 and almost lost control of the vehicle. it was so bad that she had to brake in order to avoid hitting the car in the lane next to her. this seems like an incredibly dangerous situation. i have taken the jeep to the jeep dealer service department the acted like this was not unusual and called it the death wobble (nice name for it) and they replaced the steering damper. the vehicle still occasionally shakes at various speeds and sometimes when braking and sometimes it acts normal this vehicle is 100 % stock from the dealer(not lifted and original 215/75-15 tires and has had no modifications, and has not been off roading. i believe the problem still exists and the replacement damper is just temporarily masking the problem( not very successfully either). after searching the internet it is obvious this is not an unusual occurrence and needs to be addressed i guess this wont become a big issue for the chrysler or the government until there are numerous injuries or fatalities. its a shame that manufacturers wait until the problems really escalates before they are addressed (like toyota).

Have a 2006 jeep wrangler with 24,000 miles which is experiencing front wheel shaking at about 40-45 mph and when braking. alignment, tires, etc. are good with no aftermarket modifications done to suspension. this appears to be a very common problem with wranglers and is even called and known as a death wobble. no crashes, but dealer will charge to investigate and fix. as mentioned, this appears to be a very common problem with wranglers, therefore, isn't it a manufacturing flaw that jeep needs to take responsibility for?

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep wrangler. while driving 55 mph he noticed that the front end of the vehicle began shaking and vibrating. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and inspected where it was determined that the steering damper failed. the vehicle was repaired for $50.00. the following day the failure recurred while driving 55 mph. a local mechanic stated that the vehicle needed a front end alignment and later stated that the tires needed to be rotated and balanced for $20.00. the manufacturer has not been notified. the failure continued to occur. the failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 24,000.

 1. normal road driving, 3000 miles after purchasing a certified pre-owned jeep wrangler (19700 miles total on vehicle), lead to the vehicle becoming dangerously out of control at around 50mph. the steering vibrations were so severe, that the jeep could hardly be steered. 2. this happened approximately 5 times in a 7 day span, with the last incident being the most severe. 3. i personally researched this issue and found it to be called the 'death wobble', and appears to be due to a flawed design on jeep and other chrysler vehicles. i took it to the dealer for repair, and was billed in excess of $1,000. a new steering stabilizer and front bushing kit was installed. this appears to have resolved the issue. *tr

Entering the interstate and driving up to approximately 60-65mph, the steering wheel shook violently to the point where i needed to slow down drastically to stop the vibration. i took the vehicle in for service on the13th of march at ewald jeep in franklin when they told me to replace the front tires because they were 2/32. i told them the tires have only 15,000 miles on them then they told me to see the place (pomps in racine) that sold me the tires. pomps said i needed an alignment. then, on the 8th of april driving at 40mph on a bumpy road, the steering wheel shook violently again with what felt like the front wheels were loose. to stop this vibration, i needed to slow to 10 to 20 mph. i called for service once again to ewald on the10th of april. they replaced the steering damper ($126.28 and $98 for labor). they also performed a 2 wheel front end alignment. then on saturday the 18th of april, it happened again. as soon as i got home, i called ewald and told them the shakes are back. went in on monday the 20th and had a service tech drive it. he said nothing out of the ordinary occurred while he drove it. minor shakes in the steering wheel but

While driving at highway speeds, bump or light application of brakes during slight turn causes steering wheel to shudder violently. steering will not stop shaking until speed is reduced, which on the last occasion, resulted in near miss on freeway during rush hour traffic. vehicle was previously used on city streets only and issue was observed on a couple of occasions, but frequency and severity increases dramatically at freeway speeds. although vehicle only has 17,699 miles, it is 2 months out of 36mo warranty. dealership and chrysler customer service refused to assist without customer pay diagnostic or customer pay repair. the condition is intermittent and the last time it occurred with my wife driving, she had to veer off the road across several lanes of freeway traffic, almost causing an accident. she suffered a slight sprain of her wrist. *tr

In reference to all late model jeep wranglers. what is known as the death wobble. at a speed of 35 to 55 mph, a vibration in the front end will occur that magnifies in intensity until the driver must stop the vehicle to regain control. very dangerous. jeep says that it thinks a steering damper change could stop this from occurring, but has never issued a recall or design change. problem spans several years of the wrangler model. i have heard of mid 90's all the way to my 06' having the death wobble. in my opinion jeep has neglected to fix a very serious problem that im sure has caused more than a few accidents. i have had to stop completely getting on the interstate to regain control . that cant be safe. i would think that a fix shouldn't be that hard for the engineers at daimler/chrysler to come up with . after all the jeep is an amazing vehicle. therefore i am requesting that the nhtsa commence an investigation into the death wobble and jeeps responsibility in this . it is my belief that they should be held responsible for any worn or damaged front end parts due to the wobble and the fix for the problem. thanks for your time and hard work . i am looking forward to speaking with a nhtsa rep at their convenience. if you need to observe the death wobble or need more info please feel free to contact me anytime via email or phone. or you can just google it . you would be amazed at the number of people out there that have this problem and jeep acts as if it doesn't exist. all i can say is wow. thanks again for doing your jobs and making these companies be responsible. *tr

I'm 2nd owner of an '06 jeep wrangler. miles at purchase: 26521. still under warranty. at 27,000 i experienced death wobble at 55mph. took it in to ferman of plant city dealership and they replaced the damper. within less then 1000 miles it happened again. took it to xtreme jeeps and they could not figure out what was causing it. i then took it back to local dealership, citrus chrysler of dade city, fl at about 28,000 miles. they have had it since 12/08/08. they say the tie rods and tracbar need replacement but they can't get the parts until after 12/24/08. i research this death wobble and found out that it happens to many, many other jeep owners. you just need to do a google search to see how often it happens. chrysler do not own up to the fact that this unsafe problem exists. there is no reports of this when i paid for a carfax report. this is a very, very unsafe problem that needs to be looked in to. i am expected to bail these guys out with my hard earned tax money while they hide the fact that they're producing these unsafe vehicles. i am now paying for a vehicle i can not drive. the dealership has it in their lot waiting for parts. this is very upsetting and you need to look in to this matter. how dare them not recall these vehicles and redesign steering to make them safe. i will never buy another american made vehicle again. corp greed with unsafe products is so un-american!!!! *tr

2006 jeep wrangler - extreme front end shutter at highway speeds, usually in the area of 55mph. the shutter is so bad the vehicle has to be stopped immediately to avoid loss of control. this has occurred 3 times in the last week alone. the dealer claims it is a known issue but the part is out of stock. they (jeep) calls it a shimmer, i* say it is a shutter and a life safety issue. *tr

I bought a 2006 jeep cherokee in october 2006 and sine the day we bought it we have had problems with the front end steering. we took it to the dealer where we bought it and they told us there was nothing wrong with the steering. the next time we took it in for the same problem, a few day later, they told us it needed balancing. the third time we took it in they told us it needed an alignment. we have now done balancing and alignments approximately every 2-3 months. we have replaced the stabilizer arm three times since we bought the jeep and need to replace it again. the steering gets so bad it almost pulls the wheel out of your hand at 45 miles per hour. the dealership still says there is nothing wrong with it. *tr

I purchased a pre owned jeep wrangler in 1/08 and had no problems until june of this year i experience a violent shaking on my way home from work one day and thought i had blown a tire or hit gravel on the road i checked my tires and there was nothing on the road i was baffled it happened again 2 weeks later and i took it to the nearest jeep dealership i was told it needed a new steering damper but they were on short supply (i know why now) i then called the dealership i purchased it from and was told to bring it in for a replacement part to make a long story shorter they have replaced my steering damper 3 times and i have experienced this violent shaking 5 times they have released my car back to me assuring me it was fixed. they now want to put a heavy duty damper on my jeep stating this will fix it i have contacted a lemon law attorney and she researched this problem for me she found several reports from consumers and told me that the jeep technical service bulletin specifically states how to fix this problem on the 2006 models it describes it as a shimmy and they are to replace the steering damper on the 2007 they describe it as a rumble and give a completely different fix for this other than the steering damper i called my dealership today and told them they need to find out what replacement is for the 2007 because it is obviously not the damper i am at my wits end with the vehicle i am terrified to drive it for one of these times i may roll it and cause serious injury to myself chrysler will not give me a loaner until this problem is fixed i hope this helps in your investigation for there is something dangerously wrong with this vehicle thanks marti mulholland *tr

My jeep wrangler would not start at times and did it 4 times all together. i bought it to family jeep in chadds ford pa and they told me they couldn't duplicate the problem and told me they would not even look at it because chrysler limits what they can do. i also had a problem with the steering dampener breaking and they told me i would be told when the part would arrive. that was 9 day's ago and today i was told that chrysler didn't have the part in stock and one guy has been waiting since june 5th for the same part so i shouldn't even complain yet. i have just purchased their extended warranty for over$ 2,400.00 and i feel like a fool. this same part is also available on the quadratec.com website and in their catalogs for anywhere from $40.00 to $123.00 but they won't even get it or install it because it is not a mopar part. my jeep shakes violently at highway speeds of 45 or more and also shakes very bad when braking. this is totally unacceptable and i believe extremely dangerous. *tr

2006 jeep wrangler: at about 11,500 miles, i noticed that a shudder started to develop in my front end and would vibrate up through the steering wheel at around 45 mph. it does not occur below 40 mph or above 50 mph. now, at 12,000 miles, i have a violent shudder at 45 mph, that it feels like i'm about to lose control of the vehicle. this morning it was so bad that i had to brake in order to avoid hitting the car in the lane next to me. to me this seems like an incredibly dangerous situation. i have called my jeep service manager and i am currently waiting for a call back to get my vehicle in for service. please note. this vehicle is 100 % stock from the dealer and has had no modifications, nor has it been in any accidents. *tr

Problem with the steering when driving over 45 mph. the front wheel move rapidly left and right causing a lot of vibration on the body, front shimmy. the only way to stop the vibration is reducing the speed of the jeep. *jb

Took my 2006 jeep wrangler sport right-hand drive to an independent service garage for routine oil change at approx. 6900 miles. they tested all the lights and found that both main brake lights were not functioning, and not due to bulb failure. the third light, above the spare tire, was working properly. i took it to the dealer under warranty, where they determined the problem was a faulty steering column electrical stalk system assembly. no accident occurred, though such a brake light failure could potentially cause a very serious crash. the dealership replaced the faulty steering column stock assembly under warranty, and the defective part was not saved. *nm

Traveling at 55 mph hit a slight bump on the road and the front end started wobble from side to side. the steering wheel shook side to side very quickly. the only way to get this to stop was to slow down to a speed of approximately 40 mph.
