In its july 29, 2011 response to odi's may 27, 2011 information request letter, chrysler provided 153 my 2007-2008 owner reports, additional to the 28 odi vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs), which related to the illumination of the air bag light (abl) due to a faulty clockspring (cs) wiring circuit.the right hand drive (rhd) vehicles, which were first produced in my 2008 and account for only 1% of vehicle production, accounted for 82 of these 181 reports (45%).the my2007 left hand drive (lhd) vehicle accounted for 61 of the remaining 92 lhd reports and exhibited a higher complaint rate than the my 2008 lhd vehicles.odi did not identify any incidents of crashes/injuries attributable to the cs circuit failure.since may 27, 2011, odi has received another 32 consumer complaints bringing the total to 213 reports at this closing.in addition, and for comparative purposes, chrysler provided another 42 owner reports it received on the my2006 and my2009-2010 wrangler vehicles; these populations showed a lower incident rate than the subject vehicles, especially in comparison to the rhd subject vehicles. chrysler's investigation showed that the higher rate of rhd wrangler cs failures were due to a more severe duty cycle for these vehicles which are primarily used by us postal workers/mail carriers delivering mail in rural regions.chrysler concluded the unique vehicle usage, much of which occurs with the driver's window open and under dusty environmental conditions, is the cause of premature cs failure.chrysler's analysis also indicated that the somewhat elevated my2007 lhd rate, which showed a declining failure trend, was the result of start-up production/assembly issues that occurred with the introduction of a new design cs.the new design cs incorporated both dual airbag inflator circuitry and a steering wheel angle sensor (for the electronic stability control system).on november 1, 2011, chrysler submitted a defect notice indicating it will conduct a recall of all my 2008-2012 rhd wrangler vehicles (11v528).the estimated 5,334 rhd wrangler vehicles include the 2,297 my 2008 rhd wrangler vehicles, which were the subject of this investigation, plus an additional 3,037 my 2009-2012 rhd wrangler vehicles that chrysler determined potentially have a similar cs concern as the my 2008 rhd vehicles.chrysler intends to replace the existing cs with a yet-to-be-produced improved cs assembly, or an improved steering housing assembly that is less susceptible to dusty environments.owner notice is scheduled to begin in november, 2011.chrysler also informed odi that it intends to initiate a consumer satisfaction campaign for my2007 lhd wrangler which will extend the cs warranty coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles.accordingly the investigation is closed.

Odi has received 29 consumer complaints of airbag light illumination and/or clockspring failure on model years 2007-2008 jeep wrangler. twenty-three of the 29 complaints specifically identified the airbag clockspring wiring assembly as the source of the issue.the remaining six complaints referenced only the airbag light being illuminated.among the fourteen owners contacted, six stated that they owned a right hand drive version of the vehicle typically used by postal carriers.sixteen of the 29 complaints were received since january 1, 2011.a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver side frontal airbag.

On the 2007 jeep wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags.this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2007 jeep wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. this faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2007 jeep wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. my local chrysler dealership has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying. *tr

Rh front seat the airbag alarm shuts off and turns on all the time. faulty alarm the dealer wants 300.00 dollars to fix. it seems to be a common problem in jeep wranglers, that tells me it's a faulty alarm that should be recalled. *tr

While sitting in the driveway, the horn began beeping on its own for a few seconds at a time and then stop. i eventually disconnected the horn completely. a few days later, the airbag light came on a blinked intermittently. it still does it to this day. jeep only has 50,000 miles on it. i took it to the dealership and was told it was a bad clock spring. i also heard of other jeeps having the same problem. *tr

This is the first of three similar incidents concerning two different jeeps and clockspring failure. in this incident they advised that it was caused from a big jarring. in the second incident they said dust. the third one, in a separate 2008 wranger i replaced myself. they charge approximately $150 for less then a minute of diagnostic and approximately $250 for a part that costs less then $180. i believe this is a fleecing of the public and needs the attention of your agency. there is a way to disable the the airbag sound and because of these costs it could/will lead to a death from failure.

This is my third clockspring in just over two years. i run a jeep tour company with two jeeps, two being the 4 door unlimited. just after replacing the second one in just under two years on the 07 jeep this one went out. i was traveling approximately 5 mph or less when the airbag was illuminated. based on prior experience with the 07 i had it checked out and discovered this clockspring had become defective as the prior two. i replaced this clockspring myself to save on costs as the two prior replacements cost over $400 each time. i have saved two of these clocksprings if needed for investigation.

The airbag warning light has come on and it beeps every 30 seconds and from what my husband understands, the airbags will not work. we do not know how to fix this and our dealer does not know either.

The chrysler clock springs are failing on almost all of their vehicles. there are pages and pages of complaints on jeep forums alone. this is a extreme safety issue. chrysler will not warranty this part at any cost. there needs to be a safety recall on this item asap.

On march 3, 2009, my airbag light came on. when i slowed to make a turn, it would ding at me and go off and then on. when i'm drove normally, and usually straight, the light just stayed on with no ding. through research, i've come to find that my clockspring was faulty and may not deploy my airbag if i were to get into an accident. i had this fixed through chrysler. they said it was not covered under any warranty. now, on jan. 15, 2011 with 103,769 miles, the airbag light came back on and did the same thing as previously. i went back to the same dealer to have them check it out, only for them to tell me, again, it is not covered under any warranty and that i have to pay to have it replaced again. considering this is a safety issue, i was surprised to find i had to pay both times. if i didn't get this fixed, and i got into an accident, my airbag may not deploy. completely unacceptable.
