This was one of the worst times since i bought my jeep used in oct of 2011 that it did this horrible shaking between 55-60 mph. it has done it several times since then and recently was worse than ever!! it started at 40 mph and continued even over 60 mph it was so bad i needed to pull over, as i couldn't control it. i have since read online that this is an issue many jeep owners face-especially 2007. i am going to contact jeep as i want it fixed, i could have crashed if i weren't in the far right lane on the highway at the time of incedent!!! it needs to be addressed and recalled to be repaired. i'm hoping jeep and my local dealer can fix it and it never happens again!

Bought 2007 jeep wrangler unlimited x in april 2010. 2 months later while filling it up at the gas station the gas came pouring back out. i thought pump was broken actually informed clerk. happened again 3 fill-ups later. around that time started having a shimmy in front end. brought it back to dealer on several occasions. was told they never heard of gas coming back out i must be doing something wrong and the shimmy was normal for jeeps. been having major issues with this truck it has been in the shop more than any vehicle i have ever owned. i've only bought used. i've had to have the 02 sensors changed 4 times. i have my tires balanced several times. my tires rotated. alignments, etc. i have also replaced the steering damper. fast forward to 2013. shimmy is so bad i almost took out another driver. thankfully i'm a commercially trained driver otherwise it could have ended badly. still have gas pouring out every fill up. 02 sensors still keep crapping out. head gaskets had to be replaced already. i finally had enough and told dealer they need to fix no more games and i find out about the tsb for the steering damper. then i also have to be told that my main rear oil seal is now leaking and my tranny coolant lines are leaking??? oh and was told that all this was normal for jeeps as well???? really!!!!! the truck only has 66k miles on it. it's all original no lift kits, no off roading, nothing.... this is bull... for the amount of money i paid for this vehicle somebody should be doing something. i find his site and lo and behold... i'm not the only one... unbelievable!!!!

Driving my stock 2007 jeep wrangler on i-77 in charleston wv at 65mph. started rounding a left hand curve in the road when i hit some minor bumps in the road. the vehicle started bouncing and shaking violently nearly causing me to lose control of the vehicle. i was able to slow and pull off to the side of the road. the shake went away at about 15-20 mph. i thought for sure a wheel was coming off. i slowed my speed but this still happened three more times before i could get it to royal jeep in charleston where i had to leave it and rent a car for the night. after describing the incident to the service advisor stated it sound like a bad steering damper shock and stated that he has dealt with this problem before. i picked up the vehicle the next day to a tune of $205.00 plus the rental car($64.00) and drove back to cleveland oh without another incident. mark by word, someone will die someday if this problem is not corrected quickly.

I was driving on the freeway in excess of 70mph when i hit a very minor imperfection in the road. the vehicle immediately began to shake/hop and steering become uncontrollable i nearly caused a major pile up on i-35. this has happened numerous times and i've owned the car very little time. luckily i gained control before a catastrophic event happened. this is 100% a jeep design flaw it is referred to as death wobble and no if ands or buts; they need to be held accountable. all we as buyers ask is to be put in a safe and functional vehicle. my child has to ride in this car. there are literally thousands of reports of the same problem all over the nation. it is not ok for this to go on any longer. something has to be done lives are at stake. is that not important anymore? please watch the youtube videos so you can view what the wheels and car actually do and you will understand exactly how serious this is. *tr

This has to do with the death wobble that is highly been broadcasted via internet. i have a mint, completely stock jeep wrangler x unlimited. first year of the 4 door. it has not been modified at all. as said it is mint condition. i made the mistake of not driving it much, especially on highway first several years i had it. i drove a older car as my everyday vehicle. the jeep was and is my toy. i had to start driving it more in 2011, that's when the problem was clear. whenever i am driving at over 50-55 mph, and i hit a bump or groove in road it randomly goes into this violent shake. the same shake described and seen on the internet. i finally did take it to a jeep dealer, not expecting much. due to the fact that my warranty was expired. but due to the fact of the very low mileage and showroom appearance of car, i was able to convince them to address problem at no charge to me, so for. i say so for, due to the fact that the dealer has replaced numerous parts underneath, but problem still there. now i am waiting for decision from higher ups at jeep to decide what to do with me. i feel that there is some engineering problems overlooked when designed and built. they(jeep) know they have a major problem.i am very surprised that there has not been a death involved with this. it is serious. my wife refuses to drive in my jeep. she calls it christines little sister carla. i am stuck. i cannot trade vehicle in, for i would be worried that the next owner/driver would not be as lucky as i have been, and not been in a accident. *tr

I was traveling on the freeway yesterday afternoon 11/1/12 driving at 60 mph. while driving out of no where the jeep's front end started shaking out of control. it felt like the front end was about to fall off.. i could not control the jeep at this point so i stepped on my brakes and slowed the vehicle to about 20 mph before the shaking stopped. today i took it in to a local alignment shop so they can diagnose it and they told me that the whole front steering assembly is about shot! they specifically said that the most wear was on the tie rods and front track bar in which will cause the geometry of the steering to be thrown off. they called it the death wobble and that it was common in these jeeps. i truly think that jeep needs to open a recall for these parts ( front track bar/ tie rod assembly) before some one is killed! i do not want to think about what would of happened if i didn't gain control of the vehicle yesterday. i could of caused a pile up and killed someone if not myself on i5.. thank god my kids were not with me and no accident occured. please assist in this complaint as there has been hundreds of complaints about this very same problem all over the web yet nothing has been addressed with chrysler. thank you. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

My jeep has the death wobble, has now for years. as advised ihave replaced tires and had an allignment, fixed it for a while, now its back, replaced tires and allignment also balanced and now replacing the steering damper. there are complaints about this all over the internet. every mechanic i called had heard of it or experienced it. there have been news pieces done about it and now chrysler has issued a technical bulletin blaming it on everyone else but their poor design. they should e held accountable. i have not lifted my jeep and nothing besides tires and now this steering damper has been replaced - so all stock. they need to be forced to get to the root of this and reimburse people for the repairs and labor time it takes to try to figure out how to fix this. it may not in and of itself be a safety issue but the only way to stop it once it starts is to stop completely and that is extremely dangerous at 65 miles an hour on the highway. besides the fact that it has to cause damage to the other parts of the car because of the violent shaking and that could be dangerous in and of itself depending on what is damaged. it is ridiculous that chrysler has not been held accountable for this yet by someone with the authority to force them to fix it. *tr

While driving at approx 40 mph, jeep struck a small (very shallow) pothole. front end of jeep began to shake violently. this has happened on two other occassions in the last month, all between 40 and 50 mph. each time the jeep hit a bump in the road. jeep is stock, no lifts, no off road use, original factory tires: goodyear wrangler p255/75r17, properly inlfated to factory specs, low mileage 27394. the wobble doesn't stop until the vehicle is slowed drastically, steering is difficult while the wobble is occuring. is this a recall item? manufacture reimbursement? any information regarding this issue would be appreciated. *tr

I have been experiencing the death wobble on my 2007 jeep wrangler sahara for the past year now. when it first started i replaced the tires and it appeared to correct the problem for 8-9 months. then the problem re-appeared so i had the tires rotated. corrected the problem for approximately 5000 miles. just this morning while driving into work my jeep started to shake violently starting at 50 mph. in the past, my jeep will experience the death wobble between 50-60 mph. i need to slow down to around 20 mph for the wobble to stop. this is not safe! especially driving in rush hour and i need to constantly slow down to speeds below the minimum speed limit requirement in my state. all parts on my jeep are stock / straight from the assembly line (except for the new tires, air filter, oil, and wiper blades). i can be the only driver to this vehicle as other drivers in my family refuse to drive because of the death wobble. i haven't brought it into a jeep dealer yet (although after reading threads on the internet it appears jeep denies it to be an issue). this is not safe and this is my primary vehicle. it is happening to many jeep owners and if jeep wants to keep its business they should start addressing the issue... *tr

Was driving down the road about 45 mph, hit a bump and the vehicle began to shake so violently that i was convinced a wheel was about to fall off. i immediately stopped on the side of the road to inspect the vehicle but could find nothing wrong. in researching the problem online i found out that is a common occurrence known as a death wobble. i was lucky in that i was driving on a rarely traveled back road when the incident occurred, had this happened on a major highway i could see this as a very dangerous situation.

Death wobble - i can drive the jeep down the highway and once it hits above 45 miles an hour it will start to shake extensively. i have to start putting on the break immediately to stop the jeep from shaking and regain control of the vehicle. with the speed limits on the highways 60 - 75 miles an hour the vehicle problem makes it impossible for me to take many highways. this jeep is my only means of transportation to and from work and transporting my children. i have avoided over 5 near miss accidents because of this problem with my children in the vehicle. it has almost cost me my job because of having to avoid traveling in the jeep. *tr

As i was driving through the entrance to the baltimore harbor tunnel, i hit a bump and the steering wheel began to shake violently on my jeep wrangler. in addition, the front end of the vehicle vibrated and shook violently. i had no place to stop, a bus was behind me, and i had trouble keeping my jeep in one lane. since there was no place to pull over, i slowed down and when i reached a speed betweeen 15 to 20 miles per hour, the shaking stopped and i was able to continue on. during my trip that day, i had three more episodes of violent shaking as i hit bumps in the road when i was traveling between 50 and 60 miles per hour. i had recently read an article about this problem and this issue appears to be a common problem for jeep wranglers, although i had never experienced the problem before. my jeep is a 2007 4-door wrangler which only has 10,400 miles on it because i usually keep it garaged at a beach home in delaware and i use it only during summer weekends. the jeep is a stock model with no after market modifications. i had driven it home to maryland to have a dealer checkup before i returned the jeep to the beach. the problem happened on my third trip after the dealer service but it was my first trip driving on a highway. my daughter was in the car with me and she and i were extremely disturbed and consider this issue a major safety issue. since my research indicates this is a widespread problem, i feel strongly the the ntsb should take the appropriate action to have chrysler address this issue before there is a fatality. i am extremely thankful that the bus behind me in the baltimore harbor tunnel had good brakes.

While driving down the road at about 40-45mph my right front tire hit a bump. when that happened the entire front end began to vibrate violently. the only thing that cured the issue was to brake the vehicle. once it got down to about 15mph it finally stopped and i was able to continue. this has been an ongoing issue with this jeep. this has happened before and the dealership replaced tie rods and a steering dampener but it's never gone away completely.

This jeep is a death trap and a money trap. my first incident occurred feb 16th, 2011 and cost 600.00. needed a new steering dampner which they replaced. two months later same thing happens and they replace the same piece with the newer steering dampner. two days ago the same thing happens again and now i need to spend more money to fix the same problem. researched the issue and it's called death wobble had i known this exsisted i would never have bought this car, i feel so unsafe in this car. i will never buy another jeep and will tell everyone i know to not buy one. these cars should be recalled and fixed for free, and this company should be sued for making cars that are this unsafe.

When the vehicle reaches approximately 50 mph, the vehicle begins shake. the dealership replaced the drivers side hub on the front axle which wasn't covered under the warranty. i had it aligned & the wheels balanced, which helped a little, but it was still shaking. two months later i took it back to the dealership & they're replacing all the ball joints and the passenger side hub on the front axle. i had already replaced the upper ball joints previously.

The vehicle began a violent shimmy, that you could only hold on the the steering wheel for dear life, until you had almost stopped until it was under control. have now learned, commonly referred to the death wobble. the steering stabilizer was replaced at dealers recommendation, but it didn't solve the problem. we are still working on a resolution, but it is a very scary situation.

For your urgent review and action: i was driving down the road at 45 mph and the front wheels and steering wheel of my jeep started to shake violently! i had no control over the steering of the jeep. i looked up on the internet this problem and discovered much information including videos that describe this violent shake as the death wabble. this violent shake continues to happen when i get up to speeds between 45mp and 60mph. so far i have replaced the steering stabalizer shock and now my jeep is back in the shop at a local tire and front-end service center getting new tires, wheel balancing and a front-end alignment. because of the severity of this issue, the service center said they will not test drive the jeep after this work is complete because they are not willing to put their employees lives at risk. this is a major problem for me if i can't even have a service provider test drive my vehicle after they do their work because they fear something terrible could happen to their lives. it makes me very scared to drive this jeep. i am requesting that chrysler-jeep immediately review the fixes of my jeep (including a test drive) when i get the jeep back and that they cover my expenses thus far to fix the death wabble plus any additional work that they may need to do to make my jeep safe to drive by eliminating this violent shaking problem. i find it hard to believe that this vehicle, with this violent shaking issue that creates loss of control of the vehicle, meets automative safety regulations. this is a known difficiency with various jeep products including my 2007 jeep wrangler x. in addition, i am requesting any recall information that may be available to fix this problem that i may have missed. i am available to provide additional information upon request to assist with my request for resolution.

At between 35-40 mph, when a bump is hit with one wheel before the other a shaking begins in the front suspension. at times this shaking is so violent and sustained that the vehicle has be be brought to a complete stop. there is some kind of apparent harmonic oscillation that is being established for it to be as violent and sustained as it is. i initially reported this to the jeep dealership in 2008, after the steering stabilizer bracket broke off the front axle of the jeep. i was told that my problems were because the lift kit that was installed on the vehicle was not a mopar approved kit. jeeps resolution was for me to purchase a new front axle at my cost and replace the lift kit that was on the vehicle. the lift was professionally installed and is one of the top kits on the market. since this time, i have replaced the steering stabilizer about every 10k-12k miles. each time the i do, this reduces the problem for a short period of time. each time i have discussed the issue with a jeep service center, i've been told that this is a lift issue and not jeep's problem. from the many complaints that i continue to read on jeep forums in which people are experiencing this issue, i strongly believe that this is an issue with the design of the front suspension/steering system on the jk. i have read reports from people experiencing this with the stock suspension, as well as a variety of lift systems and tire/rim configurations. if there is some way to fix this that jeep is aware of, they should be disclosing it to the owners of the vehicles, if not they should make efforts to invetigate and try to resolve this issue.

I hit a small bump on my morning commute on interstate 95 while riding next to a tractor trailer. my front end started shaking violently...i thought i was going to slam into the side of that tractor trailer. the so called death wobble is a horrifying experience, and frankly something threating my life really pisses me off. my jeep is stock..never lifted and no modifications. i do not understand how the national highway traffic safety administration has let this one slip through the cracks. i am going to see a lawyer. i have spent so much money trying to get this resolved..and i am still not safe it is still happening..happened yesterday. now i could trade it in or sell it, but that is some real bad karma coming back. i am looking for these manufactuer issues to be resolved and to know that when i drive my jeep to and from work everyday that everytime i hit a small bump or cross over a joint in a bridge, i am not at risk of killing myself or someone else due to driving a jeep wrangler. i would never recommend jeep to anyone at this point. in fact people ask me all the time how i like it and i tell them it is a piece of crap and i wouldn't buy one. feel free to contact me regarding these issues. i am sure you have heard them before as they seem to be pretty common (the violent shaking in the front end even has it's own name...the death wobble). why dont you go out and buy a wrangler and put your own family memebers in it and drive down the highway at 70? would you own a jeep wrangler or buy one for your daughter?

While driving on a secondary road at 50 mph, i crossed a bump in the road where a culvert had been replaced. the blacktop was replaced on the road and no visible obstrucitons were noticed. the jeep started shaking violently. i thought i had blown a tire or a ball joint had failed. i came to a stop at the side of the road with traffic behind me, fearing i'd get rear-ended making a stop so suddenly. i got out of the jeep to check the tires, etc and nothing looked out of place - no flat tires, no sign of joints failing. i got back in the jeep and slowly started driving again. this happened within a 4 week span at least 4 times at the same location. but when i would drive with others in their vehicles, there would be no problems. i ended up taking my jeep to the local garage and they replaced ball joints, u joints and also aligned the front end. i had no problem until november 1, when along another seconday road, another culvert had been replaced; again the jeep started shaking violently. again on a main highway, a week later, a bump you could not see but feel while driving, violent shaking occurred. i called my garage today and told the attendant what has been happening and they explained to me that this occurs in some chrysler and also ford vehicles. there probably is nothing else wrong, but it's something that just needs to be dealt with in owning one of these vehicles. dealt with???? i shouldn't have to deal with this - chrysler should deal with this - helloooo, recall...

I purchased this vehicle used with 7907 miles on it. within four months i experienced the front end shake violently when i hit a bump. i thought it was just a one time occurrance caused by being in a curve when it happened. but this has happened six or seven times in the past year with two occurances in the same day, yesterday 11-1-11. i have found a location on interstate highway i-294 where at 55mph it will occurre when ever i am in the right lane. i have not taken the car to a dealer yet because it only has 27000 miles on it and everything looks tight in the front end. the vehicle is compleatly stock and has never been driver off road. after researching the internet for similar complaints i found many people experiencing the same trouble. it is described as death wobble. i beleive this issue shuld be looked at by the ntsb. with so many jeep wrandler owners having the same trouble, there may be design fault.

Intermittent problem occuring almost exclusively at highway speeds. while driving at highway speeds suddenly, without warning, the vehicle shuts off. all warning lights on the dash board appear, engine completely shuts off which leads to power steering failure and loss of safe control of the vehicle. while the engine shut off is intermittent and does not last for more than a few seconds before it turns back on without use of the key or any other means of manually restarting the vehicle, it is highly unsafe and can lead to severe injury or death. we have noted this issue occuring approximately 1-2 times per month. we finally took the vehicle to the dealership to service and locate the issue with the vehicle on october 20, 2011. the dealership stated they could not find any issues with the vehicle, with the exception of unusally high oil consumption. the dealership advised we do an oil consumption test which will be completed in 3000 miles or 3 months.

While driving @ approximately 55mph on rt 50 near rt 28 in fairfax co va i felt a slight vibration in the front end which immediately became a violent vibration to the point i had trouble steering the vehicle while applying the brakes to slow down and nearly crashed. i pulled off to the side of the road and got out to inspect the vehicle, fully expecting to find a flat tire or worse, thinking maybe a tire actually fell off. i found nothing wrong which was perplexing. i continued on my way with no further incident that day. since that day i've had at least five more incidents of the same nature with varying degrees of near misses regarding an accident. it's frightening and clearly something is wrong with the vehicle. i've researched the issue and it's apparent the problem is widely know as the death wobble with many suggested fixes. the dealer with whom i have my jeep serviced has acknowledged hearing about a front end shimmy but no death wobble (fairoaks chrysler, dodge jeep). they suggest replacing the front stabilizer bar with a heavy duty one and said it will fix the issue ($660.00). ironically, the heavy duty stabilizer appears to be stock on models beg. with the 2010 model year or at a minimum they have changed the configuration and placement of the stabilizer which indicates to me they (chrysler/jeep) clearly recognized there is a serious issue with the safety of the vehicle. i implore you to investigate this most serious defect before someone is killed because of this issue.

This is the first of three similar incidents concerning two different jeeps and clockspring failure. in this incident they advised that it was caused from a big jarring. in the second incident they said dust. the third one, in a separate 2008 wranger i replaced myself. they charge approximately $150 for less then a minute of diagnostic and approximately $250 for a part that costs less then $180. i believe this is a fleecing of the public and needs the attention of your agency. there is a way to disable the the airbag sound and because of these costs it could/will lead to a death from failure.

Driving on the interstate at approximately 65 mph, and the front end began shaking violently. i started pulling over and when i got down to 35 mph, the shaking stopped. i was able to drive for a couple of weeks without incidence, and then it happened again with increasing frequency. this was a stock jeep bought new without any after-market alterations with only 52k miles. i took it into midas, and they said i needed a new steering stabilizer. they replaced it, and it did not solve the problem. i took it to another mechanic, and they replaced trackbar, but it didn't solve the problem. i took it back to midas, and they put another new stabilizer, still had the problem with ever-increasing frequency. i put new tires on the car, and the problem went away for about 20k miles. at 73k, the problem started again. this time i took it the jeep dealer. they knew what the death wobble was, and they said they would check everything. they reported back that there was nothing wrong with the components, and suggested i get the tires balanced again. i got the tires balanced and took it back a week later to the dealer as the problem was happening with more frequency, and now was occurring at speeds between 45-55 mph. i suggested a particular patch of highway for a test drive. they called me back and said, there is something seriously wrong. they then worked with chrysler to identify and solve the problem. they replaced the tire rods and joints. three days later i experienced the problem again, and then again, and again. i have spent approximately $1400 to fix this problem, and it continues to persist. do an online search of death wobble and you'll find entry after entry and even videos. i'm really worried that one of these times when i and forced to quickly slow down and head to the shoulder, i'm going to end up rear ended by a tractor trailer.
