PE12009CHRYSLER GROUP LLC03/28/201208/07/2012Skid plate debris fires12V216000
In a letter dated may 15, 2012, the chrysler group llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa identifying a safety defect regarding fires originating between the transmission skid plate and the exhaust catalyst in approximately 65,246 model year (my) 2010 jeep wrangler 4x4 vehicles with automatic transmissions (nhtsa recall 12v-216).according to chrysler, changes to the exhaust system for my 2010 resulted in reduced clearances between the exhaust catalyst and the skid plate.if debris collects in the area of the skid plate and is not removed, there is an increased potential for underbody debris fires.odi's analysis of skid plate area fires in the my 2010 wrangler vehicles with automatic transmissions found that the rate increased significantly from approximately 1.7 fires per 100,000 vehicle years in the my 2007 through 2009 vehicles with the prior exhaust design to approximately 14.8 fires per 100,000 vehicle years in my 2010 vehicles, a nearly 800 percent increase.in analysis of both vehicle owner questionnaire (voq) data submitted to the office of defects investigation (odi) and chrysler's consumer complaint data submitted to odi, 35 unique reports were identified by chrysler alleging fire in subject vehicles with origins near the engine compartment or in the underbody area directly beneath and to the rear of the engine compartment.chrysler's assessments of the 35 reports of fire were categorized by likely causes.eleven of the fires were determined to be caused by skid plate debris accumulation and 4 additional fires were found to have originated in the area of the skid plate, but debris ignition could not be confirmed.an additional skid plate debris fire was reported to odi after the recall announcement, bringing the total known fire count to 36, including 12 caused by skid plate debris and 4 originating in the skid plate area from unknown causes.chrysler identified a design change to the exhaust system in my 2010 that increased the possibility of debris contact with an exhaust catalyst.beginning in my 2011, the skid plate was replaced with a skid bar for weight reduction purposes.the skid bar having a much smaller surface area than the skid plate reduces the potential for debris entrapment.the recall remedy for recall 12v-216 will involve replacement of the skid plate with the skid bar.as background, the my 2010 subject vehicles are a part of the jk generation of jeep wrangler vehicles that began production in my 2007.chrysler conducted a prior recall (09v-436) of my 2007 and 2008 jeep wranglers for a defect involving overheated transmission fluid expulsion that could contact the exhaust and cause an engine compartment fire.the recall remedy was to add audible (chime) and visual warnings (hot oil message in the instrument cluster) to alert the driver that the vehicle was being operated with elevated transmission fluid temperatures.chrysler enhanced the audible warning with a service campaign (j31) for my 2009 and a portion of the subject my 2010 vehicles.transmission fluid expulsion has not been identified as the cause of any of the 36 fire incidents in the subject vehicles. no indications of a common causal pattern were evident in the remaining 20 fire incidents in the subject vehicles.six (6) of the incidents appear to be related to improper wiring of various added aftermarket equipment, 2 appear to be related to improper oil change, 1 was related to a damaged transfer case, 1 was related to an electrical short circuit and the remaining 10 were of unknown origin.accordingly, this preliminary evaluation is closed.the odi reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers:skid plate debris fires:10460378, 10441570, 10421483, 10406886 underbody fire, skid plate debris unconfirmed:104515170
PE12009CHRYSLER GROUP LLC03/28/2012Engine Compartment Fire
The office of defects investigation has received eight reports alleging fires originating in the engine compartment of my 2010 jeep wrangler vehicles.seven of the 8 complainants allege the fire or symptoms of the impending fire began while driving.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.the odi complaints cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following odi identification numbers:10358879, 10441570, 10371836, 10421483, 10423198, 10427833, 10429042, 10451570

Owner reports: unexplained vehicle fire under normal driving conditions in a city road. (35-45 mph) 2010 jeep wrangler while moving, owner/driver noticed smoke coming out from the sides, front and inside cabin area, and the permeating smell of burning plastic and vehicle fluid(s). immediately, the power-steering system lost functionality while owner tried to pull-over to the shoulder of the road. the vehicle failed to maneuver properly and with ease. without any prior warning from vehicle the engine compartment area suddenly caught on fire while vehicle was still moving. visible fire flames ensued from the hood area. owner immediately stopped, turned off ignition and proceeded to use a fire extinguisher. that, when owner arrived at front of vehicle, he saw flames protruding from under the hood. owner proceeded to open hood to fight fire with his own fire extinguisher . owner had to, immediately, jump-back because hot oil/fluids (power steering, transmission coolant fluid) was gushing out in massive amounts. despite owner's attempt to extinguish flames, the engine

Bought a certified used vehicle from fairfield dodge, crysler, jeep in muncy , pa and in 4 months of owning this vehicle it had a recall on the transmission skid plate, engine light on due to broken sensor, in need of four brake rotors and brake pads. they stated that when they serviced the vehicle when they purchased it that the rotors were cut for the last time when they certified the vehicle for sale on the lot. and now four months later it needs $1,200.00 worth of repairs. they state that the esim was broken by me or someone that was under the hood and that i would have to pay for the parts but not the labor the same with the brakes. i feel that this vehicle should have never been front line ready or even certified with all these issues, they are very, very poor representitives of your brand. i did not buy a jeep to have major problems within four months of purchase. then when i arrived the day of service they no longer had my recall part they put it on another vehicle that came in before mine. i live two hours away from the dealership and they failed to do there job. *tr

This jeep has never been used for any type of off roading, yet it has a burnt smell coming from the transmission. it was taken to the dealer where it was checked however they could not determine what was causing the burnt smell and smoke coming from the transmission. it has now been checked a couple of times, where only an transmission oil change was performed because they never found out the problem. i can only hope i do not become a statistic, before the problem is found.

After traversing a national forest service road leaves collected between the transmission skid plate and the exhaust system. while driving at interstate speeds i was flagged down by anothe car to inform me that sparks were coming from under my jeep. luckily this was at night when th sparks could be seen. i stopped the vehicle and immediately discharged my fire extinguisher on the leaves. this only slowed the fire... cold water from a ice chest finally fully extinguished the fire. the debris was removed and the area was inspected with no damage noted. i was able to continue on my trip.

The recent recall by jeep on the 2010 wranglers does not fit the situations that have been occuring. several owners have experienced spontaneous fires, and were not in any off-road situation that could have cause debris to collect on or near the catalytic converter. they were simply driving home from work, or on the highway. one owner, who contacted me, had 16 miles on it (2012 model), and had just picked it up from the dealership. it caught on fire on his way home. another owner had 600 miles on it (another 2012 model) and it was sitting in front of his home. numerous have not been on the 2010 models either. the debris that collected under my vehicle was not burned up in the fire, and not even in that same location. i believe that this recall is jeep's attempt to bandage a larger issue they they are hiding from the public. video from my fire clearly shows a liquid (tranny fluid or fuel) pouring from the vehicle from the very beginning of the fire. my feeling is that it's a tranny cooler overflow problem, or a bad fuel line connection. here is a link to the facebook page that i created for others to post their experiences. https://www.facebook.com/jeepwranglersthatcaughtonfire

Around 1,500 miles my brand new 2010 jeep wrangler sport with a 6 speed manual transmission popped out of 1st gear very violently - thought i had hit something. about every 100 miles or so after that incident, it will pop out of 1st gear into nuetral - or - grind gears. it was happening so often, i contacted my dealer who told me it wasn't a problem of chrysler maybe i wasn't driving it correctly. i started to push it into 1st gear with more attention, holding my hand on the shifter, this seemed to work okay, until one day, after i pushed it into 1st gear, it popped out so hard it almost broke my wrist! it seems to pop out of 1st several times a week now, driving around town (stop and go traffic); once it popped out of 1st so hard it went right into 2nd gear! its extra scary when it happens at a red light intersection and when i start to proceed, it will pop out leaving me without power in the middle of the intersection, with people behind me - i have to quickly throw it into 2nd because it won't go back into 1st. i have 23,000 miles on my jeep now. i can confidently say it has happened over a 1,000 times!! i have started to feel when it might happen, while my hand is on the shifter, it seems to start to wobble - as if something isn't connected right. i have tried pulling it out of 1st gear when i stop, re-shift into 2nd gear/1st gear - doesn't fix it. i have tried to baby it, shifting softer, and even rev the engine and peel out - it doesn't matter, it happens no matter what i do. i'm taking it to a different dealer this afternoon, maybe they will listen to my plight. i will happily testify to a grand jury that this is a major problem with the 2010 jeep wrangler 6 speed manual transmission.

The 2010 jeep wrangler unlimited had been driven approximately 15 miles in stop and go traffic and for the ten minutes prior to the stop at the convenience store had been driven at highway speeds. the driver stopped at a convenience store for 5 minutes, pulled out of the parking lot, and approximately 2 minutes later the jeep had flames shooting out from underneath the vehicle. the driver was able to get into an empty parking lot before the power steering failed and attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher with no success. the jeep was was a complete loss at approximately 3000 miles. the only unusual behavior noted before the fire was that the vehicle stalled when put into reverse on 2 occasions. the jeep was scheduled to go back to the dealer to investigate this problem but then burned to the ground. investigation from the chrysler rep and the insurance rep determined that the cause of the fire was due to debris around the transmission.

The 2010 jeep wrangler was repaired october 26th by a chrysler dealer for 6 speed manual transmission popping out of first gear. approximately 30 miles after repaired, the same condition reappeared. since 10-28-11 it has popped out of first gear 5 times for an average once every 68 miles. this is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed. this is not an isolated incident with jeep wranglers that have a 6 speed manual transmission even though chrysler says this has never happened before. the dealership can never recreate the condition when they drive it in the parking lot so they say there is nothing wrong. the jeep first popped out of first gear on august 31, 2011. we filed a compliant, #10425283, but felt since it is doing the same thing after a repair it should be filed again. someone has to demand that chrsyler admit there is a problem and correct the issue.

Letter re the problems experienced with a 2010 jeep wrangler feels that vehicle falls under the new car lemon law (entire package not imaged, forwarded to nvs-200) *tgw the consumer stated there have been repeated attempts to repair the vehicle. however, the vehicle remains defective. the consumer stated the vehicle was running sluggish and burning oil, but no leaks were found. the problem went on for several months. the consumer believed the engine was defective, but the dealer would not approve a new engine, so they kept replacing parts. the vehicle was eventually returned to the consumer, with the same problem. the dealer checked the engine again, and discovered it was burning 1 quart of oil per hour and it was determined the engine needed to be replaced. the hard top was leaking and ruined the carpet. the starter was defective. also the transmission was exhibiting a burning smell, it would slip and wouldn't go into gear and the fluid was no longer the correct color. also, the temperature gauge rose just under the overheating point. the radiator cooling fan was defective. also, there was a grinding noise coming from the transfer case. *jb

On april 16th, 2011 several of us decided to do a mild 4-wheel drive trip to a local waterfall. i was driving a 2010 jeep wrangler rubicon in 4x4 low on a dirt road. we reached our destination and the vehicle in front of us stopped and everyone got out and started to gather their stuff from the rear of their jeep. i stopped roughly 10 ft behind the first vehicle on a slight incline (10% angle) downwards towards the first vehicle, put my jeep (auto transmission) into park, and took out the key. we exited my jeep and started walking towards the first jeep as i approached my front tire, the jeep started to move forward and it made a ratcheting noise from the transmission. the type of noise that is made when one would put a moving vehicle into park. my jeep crashed into the tailgate of the first jeep almost crushing my friend. fortunately my jeep hit the tailgate of the first jeep at a 90 degree angle and the door withheld the force of my jeep crashing into his jeep. took the jeep to the dealership and they said they could not replicate the problem and they would not attempt to fix the jeep. i drove the jeep home and was able to replicate the problem in about 5 minutes, and was able to reproduce it consistently in another 45 minutes to an hour.. i created a video of the transmission failing and sent it to the jeep dealership. i was able to replicate the failure by stopping on a hill with a pretty good angle and cycle through these actions: put foot on brake, put jeep in drive, drive 2 inches, put foot on brake, put jeep in park, and release brake. at this time the dealership has sent the video to corporate and awaiting direction. no corrective action has been performed.

2010 jeep jk wrangler transmission oil overheats when vehicle is engaged in 4wd. this could cause transmission failure, particulary on mountainous terrain where the possibillity of a fatailaty could occur. chrysler has issued a recall noting that this condition could occur. the fix is an audible chime in addition to the warning light on the instrument panel instead of addressing the root of the problem such as the addition of a larger oil cooler, oil pan with larger capacity to keep oil cooler, or some other repair.

Transmission oil is overheating while climbing steep grades at highway speed and also when driving off road and up hills at slow speed. had to pull over to the shoulder of highway creating hazard. after researching this problem i have found that many chrysler jeep wrangler jk models have noted this problem. many have reported that transmission can start fire. problem can be fixed with external transmission cooler but may void warranty. i have just purchased this vehicle only two months ago and since found all this out. chrysler has apparently added a hot oil light as resolution but this seems ineffective and does not actually correct the problem. seeking guidance and resolution.

A 2010 jeep wrangler rubicon caught on fire only 10,000 miles. we were riding down the road and the engine lost power and the rpm's went to zero. there was no check engines lights on and all the gauges were fine. we pulled over to the side and noticed the smoke coming from under the jeep and under the hood. the fire department said they thought it was caused by a over heated transmission and maybe back the fluid up to the exhaust which ignited it. they were not completely sure because the engine was melted so badly.

I have a manual transmission and when starting from a stop in first gear the transmission will pop out of first gear and into neutral leaving you to cost untill you can get it back into gear. this occurs randomly and with no warnings. after the first time the frequency increases until the issue is fixed. the problem can be corrected by replacing the appropriate synchro. when pulling out into heavy traffic this could be very dangerous.

My vehicle pops out of first gear intermittently. this has occurred since i purchased the vehicle in february of 2010. on-line research has revealed that this is a common problem and will not be addressed by the dealership unless it can be reporduced while they are in the vehicle. i feel this is a serious safety issue and can result in being rear ended by and unsuspecting driver or being stranded in a lane crossing traffic without the vehicle in gear.

I purchased a 2010 jeep rubicon in nov 2009, returned to the dealer within 60 days and stated to the dealer that first and second gears had continually popped out while attepting to move from a stand still. i was told that the problem could not be reproduced and that i need to be more careful in my shifting. i have had manual transmissions in all my cars since i was 16. i know how to drive them, i have also had two previous jeep wranglers and both were manuals with absolutley no popping issues. i have taken this issue up with the dealership for a second time and was told the same thing again. tommorrow it is going in for the third time for this issue. this popping occurs on average of about 4/5 times a week. i have been caught in intersections, on ramps, up hills, (very scary if someone is behind you) and numerous other situations where safety has been jeopardized and a serious accident narrowly avoided. my wife also drives this vehicle and had to see a doctor for a hyper extended finger when the shifter kicked back and caught her un awares. this needs to be fixed, recalled, something.

Let me begin by saying that my husband and i have driven manual transmissions for years and have never had any issues arise such as these. we have a 6 month old, 2010, jeep wrangler, 2-door, manual transmission. immediatley after purchasing the vehicle, the clutch began popping out of first and second gear. last monday, sept. 20th, we had a chrysler dealer look at the issue and the technician took apart the transmission and replaced a snychronizer. once we took the vehicle home, we immediately began to have further problems. now, the vehicle often sticks in gear and we often can't get it into the next highest gear or downshift. for example, i pulled out of a parking lot (with my 6 year old son as a passenger as well), and i gotthe vehicle shifted (had to jam it) into first, but couldn't get it into 2nd. we were stuck in oncoming traffic and i was desperately trying to get it into a gear to go. i ended up getting it into thrid and putted slowly in my lane. also, i was on my way to a meeting, with a co-worker, and i was attemtping to put the vehicle into 5th and it wouldn't go into 5th gear, i had to slow down in a higher mileage area to have the ability to keep it in 4th. those are two of several examples of incidences that took place over a period of 5 days. we had the vehicle towed back to the dealership for repair. at this point, there has been no decision on what repair will take place. the technician is attending a transmission training today and stated he would consult others there. however, a service manager stated that this is the third jeep wrangler that they had transmission issues within two weeks and that chrysler is aware of these problems. i have grown very frusterated and concerned with this vehicle. i am concerned about the saftey of the vehicle, especially because it is my primary mode of transportation with my child and being stuck in oncoming traffic is not an ideal situation. have found websites devoted to these issues/complaints.

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 jeep wrangler. the contact stated when accelerating from a stand still and taking the vehicle from neutral to first gear, the shifter pops of out first and back into neutral. the vehicle is a manual transmission and the contact has to hold the shifter in first gear to prevent it from popping back into neutral. this is a safety issue because the vehicle slows and jerks with traffic coming from behind. two separate dealers stated that they cannot duplicate the problem and nothing is wrong with the vehicle. the failure mileage was 4 and the current mileage was 15000.rl

2010 jeep wrangler jumps out of first gear under acceleration. average rate of occurrence is 2 times a day. vehicle was purchased new in december of 2009. problem reported to tate jeep in frederick, md in march. dealership removed inner and outer shifter boots and returned the vehicle to me with instructions to drive the vehicle without the boots installed to see if the problem reoccurs. dealership notified 1 week later that the problem remained; they responded that they would call me back to schedule a service appointment. after three weeks, i called the dealership to inquire as to their plan; they informed me that they had forgotten to order the parts. for the last 2 months i have been driving the jeep without the inner and outer shifter boots and of course the problem remains. there has been no attempt from the dealer to contact me. the vehicle prevents a safety problem as it can and will jump out of first gear when pulling into traffic and when trying to ascend hills; all of which risk a vehicle collision. additionally when the shifter jumps, it does so with enough force to cause significant pain and risk injury if one

My vehicle pops out of first gear intermittently. i've taken it to the dealer twice for repair and have replicated the issue with a service technician in the vehicle but have been repeatedly told that parts are on order. after further inquiries no parts have been produced nor repair has been completed and the problem still exists. this is a serious safety issue and can result in being rear ended by and unsuspecting driver or being stranded in a lane crossing traffic without the vehicle in gear.
