Defect SummaryOn certain mini vans, freezing conditions can cause water on the throttle cable to freeze during normal operation. resistance to movement of the throttle cable can occur when the driver lifts their foot off of the gas pedal.
Consequence SummaryThis can cause the cable to stick, thus preventing the engine from returning to idle and causing the vehicle to maintain speed or accelerate. such an event can occur without warning and could cause a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will modify a protective sleeve around the throttle cable. the recall began on august 15, 2005. owners may contact kia at 1-800-333-4542.

Defect SummaryOn certain mini vans, during assembly, the throttle cable would twist itself out of position.
Consequence SummaryThis can permit the cable to be hung up, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the throttle cable free of charge. vehicles produced from march 20, 2001 through november 7, 2001 will have a guide clip installed on the throttle body assembly in order to ensure that the tension force cable does not move out of position. vehicles manufactured beginning on november 8, 2001, already have the extended guide, which accomplishes the same objective. the recall began march 21, 2005. owners may contact kia at 1-800-333-4542.

Kia provided information describing a water entry point at the rubber sealing boot located at the throttle body end of the throttle cable, advising that water could enter the cable sheath during normal vehicle operation.in low temperatures, the water freezes and may impede the movement of the throttle cable thereby preventing an open throttle from returning to the closed position.a stuck throttle could increase the risk of a crash.to prevent water ingress, kia increased the crimping force of the clamp installed on the rubber boot from 2 to 5 kilograms force.the action took place in april 2004 and occurred in connection with other changes to the throttle cable system.to remedy the vehicles built before this date (all of my 2002 and part of 2003), kia will conduct a safety recall to replace the defective cable with an improved component.certain recalled vehicles will also have an additional clip installed to address a potential cable disengagement concern.see kia's january 17, 2005 part 573 letter for nhtsa recall 05v013 (kia recall sc-042) for further information.no action is being taken on vehicles built after april 4, 2004.

Dt: the consumer stated that 2003 kia sedona accelerated by itself while sitting at a stop sign. the engine accelerated when the consumer had foot on the brake. the car had never done this before. the car traveled a couple of feet and there was a near miss by other vehicles. the consumer contacted the dealer and was waiting for on an appointment to take the vehicle in for service. the consumer has not contacted kia at this point. he suggested that on one knew what would make the vehicle do this. the car accelerated by itself 6 times in the same day, and the consumer had foot on the brake all 6 times. the consumer consulted the owner's manual and looked at the engine ,and the engine size was described as 3500.*ak

I received a recall letter dated 04/04/05 stating that the throttle may freeze in my 2003 kia sedona. i immediately called my dealer and was told that the dealership was short handed and someone would get back to me. i also called the kia consumer assistance center and left a message on 04/26/05 and still no response. our kia sedona account is under my husbands name, donald a dudley. he is an over the road truck driver and is away from home alot. my complaint is that no one seems to be listening to me or wanting to answer my questions. i am getting a major brush off from the dealership i purchased the van from and from their consumer assistance center. *ak

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - ACCELERATOR PEDAL

2003 kia sedona ex, 29 apr 2004 sudden acceleration. while driving my kia sedona, i was coming onto the on-ramp on i-95, exit 130 (fredericksburg, va). i was accelerating slowly onto the highway and had gained speed of about 40 mph, when the pedal suddenly dropped to the floorboard. the engine went to full-throttle, and we began to accelerate uncontrollably. i applied the brakes fully, but the engine continued to rev higher. we continued to accelerate. the cruise control was not on, and i was unable to slow the vehicle down by applying brakes. i then put the van in neutral, and pressed the brakes with a great amount of force, until we slowly decelerated. i shut the engine off, and we coasted into the side of the road, nearly hitting an oncoming bus that was entering behind us on the highway. we were able to make it home, but on 30 apr 2004, the next morning, i attempted to start up the van to take it to the dealership, and while in park, the van went to full-throttle again, so i called a tow-truck. the kia dealership in fredericksburg, va (540)891-7400 now has the vehicle, and they have not reported to me any damages. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 kia sedona. she received a recall notice for the wheel bearings, brake lights, and the vehicle speed control. the dealer refused to honor her recall notice since the vin was not included. the contact provided the dealer with copies of the recall notice with her vehicle information listed and they declined to repair the recall. the manufacturer admitted that her vehicle is included in the recalls based upon the vin. the contact returned to the dealer; however, they did not honor the recall after confirming that she received approval from the manufacturer. she is currently responsible to assume the cost for repairs related to the recalls. the failure and current mileages were 79,291. the nhtsa campaign id number(s) are: 03v158000 , 05v013000 , 05v232000.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - CRUISE CONTROL
12/24/200650000512/13/2002
2003 kia sedona accelerates without warning when the speed (cruise) control is enabled, but not activated (set button has not been pushed). this is not the known cable freezing problem, since we live in florida. this is a safety problem if in traffic and can't react fast enough to hit the brakes before impacting a car in front. dealer could not duplicate problem after a short drive and nothing was done. *jb

The cruise control will not work at certain times and this has been going on for at least 6 or 7 months and is still happening. dealer replaced cruise switch but that did not work, it still is doing the same thing. went back to dealer and they said they could not doing anything about it until they see it happening. this is a problem because it does it when it feels like doing it and i cannot get it to the dealer when it is happening. *jb

When applying the brakes, the accelerator sticks and auto acts as if both pedals are being pressed at same time. this has happened about 20 times since purchasing the auto on 5/31/03. on 2/12/05 i came to a stop and the auto was idling so fast that it was roaring and inching forward when i had my foot on the brake as hard as i could. on 2/11/05 this condition occurred for a short period of time. car has been idling extremely fast without pressure on the gas pedal. i had the car towed in by kia roadside service but was told that if they could not create the problem they could do nothing about it. what do i have to do, kill myself before they take care of this problem? if i had let off the brake today i could have ended across a street, down a hill, and into the side of a building. kia did tow my car to the dealership but i'm not satisfied unless they find the problem and fix it since i have complained about this since day one buying the car. i drove it about 3 miles after buying it and had to go thru a red light and around a corner into a main thoroughfare before i got the car stopped. took it back to the dealer and was told that i was hitting the gas pedal and the accelerator at the same time. now, 30,000 miles later and 20 incidents later i am still having the same problem. everytime i have had the car in for other service i have mentioned this problem and been told bring it in when it is doing it. if i am 40 miles away, this does not work. what do i do????*jb
