I have a 2005 kia sedona ex and the brakes have always been a little weak for the vehicle but after having brake issues with the rotors glazing (becoming to hot) and having to replace pads way to often about every 6-8 thousand miles i decided to go online and look up issues and it seems that model year has had severe brake issues that kia knows about and says they are working on an upgrade that the owner can purchase but yet none have been released to date. multiple owners complaining of exact same issues regarding the braking system being way to small for the vehicle weight and i thought this needed to be at least brought to your attention. kia's fix is to replace rotors and pads but the vehicles have the exact same symptoms within short period of time.. this could and almost has caused me to be in an accident. love the van hate the brake system and am currently investigating the use of aftermarket drilled and slotted brake rotors to reduce heating issues.. i am 37 yr old with a wife and 7 year old son and i don't drive my van hard but when i need it to stop i expect it to stop... *tw

I own a 2005 kia sedona with the same brake problems as the other complaints. the dealer replaced them up until the warranty ran out and now it all comes out of my pocket. i've had the brakes done at least 5 times on this vehicle and this is ridiculous. does someone need to die in order for this to be corrected?? the entire front end shakes and stutters horribly and every time i've been told my brakes/rotors need replaced. *tr

I have a 2005 kia sedona van with less than 34,000 miles. i have been pulsating problem in what i thought was my brakes but now know that it is the rotors on my van. when driving especially on the highway when i apply my brakes the shaking and pulsation makes me think i will not be able to stop. after doing some research on the internet i find that many sedona owners have had the same problems. i took it in to my local kia dealer today(7/28/2009) and they told me that yes many have this problem but it is not something that is covered with my warranty. i have to have them replaced or turned at a cost to me of some $400. why when so many people are having this issue why has no one issued a recall to find out why this is happening. i am just as frustrated as the other owners trying to resolve this issue. i guess it is going to take a few people getting hurt or killed before this issue can be resolved. *tr

I am writing a complaint about the rotors and brakes on my 2005 kia sedona. i know many others that own the same type of van and are having the same problem. i have taken it in the dealer and they have told me that they know and are aware of the problem but there is nothing they can do. they have told me that the rotors need to replaced and that the brakes also need to be. i have taken it in several time to have my brakes checked and have been told that they are fine and that there is something wrong with the rotors and that it is a dealer problem. i would like for this to be looked into more as to i would not want to have an accident with such a problem to my van. *tr

From the first day i drove my 2005 kia sedona off the lot it has vibrated when the brakes are used. even after having them replaced it continues to vibrate so i did not realize it was a big big problem until i started to read the reports on it now i cannot wait till i have it paid for so i can buy something else...the brakes also make a moaning noise and/or squealing noise...this is not all the time but it is aggravating ...will no buy kia product again...the only reason i got this one was there was not much choice after katrina hit and now i am stuck with it for a few more years...why won't they find a fix for it before some one is really hurt. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 kia sedona. the contact felt a pulsating sensation when braking, which caused the entire vehicle to shake. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the brakes and rotors were replaced under warranty. the brakes have been replaced numerous times. the failure mileage was 12,000 and current mileage was 48,000.

Brakes squealed at slower speeds. brakes replaced using kia parts twice in 2 years. eventually, braking at high speeds (over 35mph & on hwy) caused van to shake excessively, and steering wheel to vibrate, along with return of squealing noise at lower speeds. kia parts used again to replace brake discs, rotors 01/09. within one month the squealing and then shaking problems returned. goodyear found other reports of this same problem and replaced the kia parts with an upgraded aftermarket brand of parts. no problems since! we have also had to replace tires 3 times before this latest fix. *tr

I own a 2005 kia sedona that i purchased new. i put the first set of brakes on it at 15,000 miles. it now has 52,000 and i'm going to have to put the fifth set on. i contacted kia directly and they told me their wasn't a recall but there was a brake system upgrade that i could purchase. i asked if they were aware of a brake problem and they said only in certain areas ,depending on the terrain. i am 32 years old and have never seen nothing like this and i have always lived here. at 52,000 miles i should just now be putting on the first set of brakes. *tr

Have a 2005 kia sedona and the van has 22,000 and has been in the repair shop for brake problems over 6 times. since 8/05 has been back in for service for oil leaks, remote problems, tire problems. the rotors have been changed, the pads, everything has been done but after a little time passes the noise and the pulsating comes back. the van starts to pull when you go to put on the breaks and it makes noises. keep bring it back to the dealership and they fix it with new brakes, rotors, pads but the problem keeps coming back and back. should not have had to replace the brakes and pads, and rotors so many times with very little mileage on it. *jb updated 12/12/07 *tr

From the beginning of the purchase in october, 05, i have had pulsating brakes that don't want to stop on contact. the local dealer informed me there was a part coming out to replace/repair and as soon as it was out, i would be one of the first to get my vehicle fixed. every 3-4 000 miles at oil change and tire rotation, i have had work done on my brakes and kia has covered the cost. every time i go in and complain, they fix the problem and tell me it's still in process. when my vehicle rolled over 60,000 miles, the warranty expired and now kia is telling me they will no longer cover the cost to repair this ongoing manufacture problem. *jb

New van purchased with 3 miles on it back to dealer on 3 separate occasions to deal with brake issues, shuttering and moaning sound. first time rotors cut and brakes cleaned (approx 5500 miles). second time could not replicate the moaning sound (11300 miles). third time replicated moaning sound coming from rear drums, dealer resurfaced drums (approx 11600 miles). everything so far was under warranty so no cost was incurred up to this point. replaced rotors and front pads due to regular maintenance 5 months ago (approx 23000 miles). everything fine until 30000 mile service where brakes are adjusted (rear) and extreme shuttering occurs from rear (perhaps masked by not having properly adjusted rear brakes). appears to be drums that are out of round. will pay $125 each drum and apply myself as they are clearly out of warranty, but it seems that there is some inherent problem with the brakes on this van. 3500 lbs and too small of a braking system. this is my second new kia sedona and 3rd new kia vehicle in three years. love the brand - wish they'd fix the brake issue....this is going to get expensive now that it is out of warranty. seems like the majority of complaints are for the brakes. *jb

Purchased vehicle in 5/2005. returned to dealer in august at 3500 miles, for brake noise. was told the rotors were warped from sitting on the lot before the sale of the vehicle. rotors were turned. noise stopped for a month or so. dealer went out of business, went to another dealer because of loud noise from brakes, sounded like a large truck when stopping. initially was told the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong, but after test driving it, they replaced pads. noise stopped briefly, but then the vehicle was over the 12k warranty for the brakes. i've had the car at my mechanics shop twice. he said the rear brakes are very large for this car, and front brakes are tiny with cheap shoes. brakes make noise all the time, and the car shutters when stopping at high speeds or going downhill. problem still not resolved. *jb

The day i purchased my 2005 kia sedona the radio stopped working. that was replaced, then the lighter went. again the radio and then within the first three weeks the brakes and front end which has been the ongoing problems and concern to date. with numerous trips up until 9/05 and my taking it to yet another dealer 9/05-1/06 leading to it blowing out a tire and now them telling me all along of course that nothing is outside of normal or their fault etc. however buying this vehicle new and it sounding and like something i've never heard before (and i've driven for 20 years many types of cars new and very old!) let alone the way it shakes.. yet they always led me to believe i was nuts. they did replaced the rotors finally only after i took it to someone else who documented it needed it and i took it back with the paper work and that wasn't until august (i bought it in may) and they'd blown me off for two months. i've called kia main office who also is making it not their problem it's a normal wear issue. there is no car that sounds and feels like this upon braking. reading your site at least i know i'm not alone finally which is what *they* want you to think! *nm

 1) vehicle shutters and makes roaring noise when braking down hill. brakes overheat and slide and do not stop well. vehicle shutters when braking under normal conditions but more so going down hill. 2) tires need balance and rotating every 2000 miles and rotors and brake pads need replacing every 2000-4000 miles. the back shoes are glazed over 3) first time rotors and pads were replaced and back shoes unglazed. second time rotors turned and the brake pads were not removed and back shoes unglazed. third time rotors and pads are going to be removed and back shoes unglazed. this vehicle has 7000 miles on it and the district manager of the dealership agrees this is excessive and he did not make me feel confident that it can be fixed. they are claiming this year and model had brake issues. on the fourth time i will sue for lemon law. this is unacceptable. i am in the process of writing a letter to the manufacturer. i have contacted the corporate office. *jb

This van has been in 3 times for brakes the rotors keep warping. i have taken it to the kia place twiced and to it to another dealership the third time. i have only had the van for 2 years (may 08). the other dealership says, that i will have to replace the rotors every 6 months. the rotors become warped excessive lateral run out per kia the front tires wear excessively, and the vehicle does not stay aligned. all that kia will do is replace the front rotors and pads until the warranty is out then the consumer pays. i have research on line the front brakes are undersized, causing the rotors to over heat and warp. the struts seem to have a wrong type of mount system and have to be replaced. kia is doing nothing about this they state that it is driving habits. thousands of people have complained about this, kia's final stand is that it is my driving habits. they are not taking responsibility for the safety flaw in their engineering of the front end being in adequate for the weight of the vehicle. kia needs to stand up and fix there vans

The 2005 kia sedona i own has been plagued by numerous problems. the first of which is a brake malfunction. it was thumping when braking at high speeds then grinding when braking at low speeds. the pads have been replaced, rotors machined, then they were replaced. also, there is a joint or strut problem b/c . when you go over a bump in a residential neighborhood it sounds creaky and as if it might snap. also, power door locks have been serviced twice. in addition the steering wheel is very shaky. the dealer blamed that on alignment. also, the tires need to be replaced at less than 25k and probably have needed to be replaced since 15k. this is due to the brake problem i am certain. all attempts to have these issues resolved have been blown off by the dealer -- until 11/07 when i demanded that there was indeed something wrong. *tr

I bought my very first new vehicle in sept 2005, and had my first auto accident less than six weeks later. i was on my way to work on friday, oct 28, 2005. i came upon a vehicle stopped in my lane. i put the brakes on, and left a small skid mark. i had plenty of room to stop my vehicle, but was unable to. once i pressed the brakes, i realized i wasn't slowing down and pressed harder on them. there was some jerking and it felt like i was hopping up the road. my vehicle never slowed down at all. needless to say, i crashed into the rear end of the stopped car. it caused major damage to my front end, and damage to the back of the other vehicle. also, my airbag did not deploy. my vehicle is currently at the body shop waiting to be looked at, but they are estimating the cost at $8,000 or more in damage. i really feel angry about this because i am a cautious driver, and i feel this accident was not my fault. i feel the brakes on my van did not function properly. *nm

Every 2-5 thousand miles the rotors become warped excessive lateral run out per kia the front tires wear excessively, and the vehicle does not stay aligned. all that kia will do is replace the front rotors and pads until the warranty is out then the consumer pays. after hours of research on line the front breaks are undersized, causing the rotors to over heat and warp. the struts seem to have a wrong type of mount system and have to be replaced. kia is doing nothing about this they state that it is driving habits. thousands of people have complained about this, most do not know how to follow through to get anything done. kia's final stand is that it is my driving habits. they are not taking responsibility for the safety flaw in their engineering of the front end being in adequate for the weight of the vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 kia sedona. the brakes and rotors were replaced at 8,700 miles. at 16,400 miles, the vehicle needs new rotors and readjusting of the rear brakes. as a result, the brakes pulsate and cause the vehicle to shake and make it difficult to brake. when she took the vehicle to the dealer, they stated that the failure was due to her riding the brakes while driving. the current mileage was 16,400 and failure mileage was 8,700.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 kia sedona. the contact stated that the rotors and brakes constantly overheat and cause the vehicle to vibrate and shift out of alignment when he depresses the brake pedal. the failure was noticed while driving 20 mph. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they continuously inform him to replace the brakes. however, the vibration always recurs within two weeks of having the brakes and rotors replaced. the current mileage was 52,000 and failure mileage was 41,000.

In jan 2006, after only 12,000 miles on my 2005 kia sedona, we took our car in for front brake work. the front wheels vibrated when coming to a stop. the kia dealer re-turned the rotors and it fixed the problem temporarily. the problem returned but we have ignored it until now (july 2007) when at 40,000 miles the kia dealer says this is a maintenance issue, not a warranty issue. they said they would fix the problem for $450. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 kia sedona. while driving between 55-65 mph, the brakes pulse whenever the contact is driving downhill. she has taken the vehicle to the shop for the failure. the mechanic repeatedly states that the squeaking is normal and a part of normal wear and tear. the contact believes that the failure is a manufacturer defect because the vehicle only has 17,000 miles. the current mileage is 17,000 and failure mileage was 3,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 kia sedona. in november 2006 the wheels began to vibrate, and made a loud noise when attempting to stop from 20 mph. the mehanic resurfaced the rotors, and cleaned and readjusted the rear drums. in february of 2007 the failure recurred. the same mechanic replaced the front brake pads and front rotors and readjusted and cleaned the rear drums again. on march 1, 2007, the noise returned and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. on march 7, 2007, the failure returned and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the front rotors were resurfaced and the rear drum was readjusted. currently, the failure is occurring again and the contact is not pleased that it happens very two months. the brakes have not failed again yet, but the vehicle feels as if it may shut off. the current mileage is 47,700 and failure mileage was 38,000. *ak

Bought van new. at 9k started vibrating. took to dealer and they replaced rotors. again at 20k. then they replaced the rear drums for vibrating. then they turned rotors and drums to correct vibration. mechanics and service managers all tell me it's a known problem because vans weight was increase to get better safety rating, but they used light weight brakes and they can't handle the heavier van and overheat and warp. after all this, they tell me know that they won't cover to fix issue any more, saying it isn't a safety issue. if they rotors/drums aren't sufficient to stop vehicle correctly, seems to be a safety issue to me. need to have this investigated and action taken. i have opened a case w/ kia corp. to review and make a decision. please contact me for further details or more info. thanks. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 kia sedona. the contact stated that the brake rotors had to be turned twice at 14,944 miles and 19,076 miles. the contact stated that in december 2006 a large amount of pressure was felt when depressing the brake. the dealer stated that both rotors were corroded. on april 7, 2007, the contact was driving 25 mph in wet and icy conditions, while approaching a traffic light, the contact depressed the brake pedal half a block in advance, and the vehicle did not decrease in speed and the contact had to apply significant pressure to the brake pedal. a loud thump was heard from the front left tire brake while coming to a complete stop. the contact brought the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that both front brakes were glazed and the rotors were corroded. the dealer applied an anti glaze chemical and turned the rotors. the current mileage was 19,076 ,and failure mileage was 14,944. *ak the consumer stated that the dealer informed him that kia is aware of the problem and results from the fact that the rotor is under size for the weight of the sedona. updated 05/04/07*tr

At 10,616 miles i had to have my brake rotors and pads fixed due to squealing; the dealers mechanic turned the rotors and replaced the pads. now at 20934 miles the same repair has to be done again. when i questioned the mechanics about this i was told they are having a problem with the 2005 kia sedona due to the brakes not being sufficient for the weight of the vehicle. i was also told never to tow a trailer even though my van is rated to tow because the brakes may fail. when i contacted kia complaints they said they would not do anything to help me, and denied there was a problem with the brakes on the 2005 sedona. after searching the internet i have found this is a huge problem for many other 2005 sedona owners. there is even a discussion about it on www.edmunds.com in the forums section. i am pleading with the nhtsa to intervene regarding this matter before there is a loss of life! *jb

I own an 05 kia sedona, bought new, has had brake problems from the beginning. the dealer, that services - not the one i bought from, has serviced the vehicle from the first, told me that the manufacturer was working on getting replacement parts and that as soon as they came out i would be one of the first to receive the part. now, my warranty has expired and i am having to cover the cost of replacing the parts every 3-4000 miles when i get oil changes and the dealer says they cannot cover it any longer because the warranty has expired. i am concerned because i have had transmission issues (that the dealer cannot find the problem) they say that if a problem occurs they will cover fixing it because it's been ongoing but that's what i was told about the brake problem. the brakes are so bad that the whole van shakes and doesn't feel like the brakes are grabbing or are going to stop the vehicle and my children are learning to drive in the van. *jb

Brand new van from the start brakes would shake really bad. called them, they of course tried to blame on something else, not warranty, so i took it to my mechanic i have used for 20 years, they said take it back, get new brakes and rotors. talked them into it with a lot of doing. not long after that i was going down a hill and when applied brakes van sounded like a train stopping, i even had the girl from kia service dept. on the phone when it happened the second time and she heard it through the cell phone, well, of course they couldn't find anything and wouldn't do anything. it doesn't do it all the time, maybe 3-4 times a month. but it has started shaking again, and still sounds like a train. what to do, what to do! *nm

July 2006 i noticed a smell of burning brakes or something similar. but after i turned the vehicle off for an hour the smell disappeared. then on july 4th 2006 we were 10 miles from home and noticed the radio turned off, then a few more miles the gauges all turned off, then by the time we got off the freeway, the car turned off. we then turned it back on, the radio and gauges all worked until we drove to the dealer which was closed so we drove one more mile to a safe place to park. at this time the car was completely dead. we looked in the engine, the fuse box was smoking and when opened, all the fuses were melted down and all the wires were melted too. we then got it towed to the dealer the next day 7/5/06. the car has now been at the dealer for over a week and half, and will not be ready until next week. i am hoping the new wiring they put in doesn't burn again. this is the second major trouble with this new car under 9000 miles. the first trouble was one week after buying the new car with 3 miles on it. drove into my driveway at home on a steep hill to find i had no brakes. the trouble was a kinked brake line that broke ... very scary. *jb
