Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles equipped with adjustable brake pedals, the stop lamp switch wiring harness may be out of position. an improperly positioned stop lamp switch wiring harness could make contact with the u-joint assembly of the steering column. repeated contact may eventually cause the wiring harness insulation to chafe.
Consequence SummaryChafed insulation could cause a short of the wiring harness resulting in the loss of brake lights, engine stalling, or an inability to start the vehicle increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the wiring harness for chafing and, repair if necessary. in addition, the dealer will secure the wiring harness to prevent contact with the u-joint assembly. the recall began on september 29, 2006. owners may contact kia at 1-800-333-4542.

Driving approx 35 mph when kia van lost power and had to coast to side of road. no forward movement with gas pedal pressed down. sat for 10 minutes and was able to drive at normal speed for about 30 minutes when i slowed down to turn corner, lost power again. coasted to side of road, sat for another 10/15 minutes then drove to auto mechanic. replaced throttle position sensor for 2nd time. vehicle computer also reset. serious safety risk as vehicle loses power in middle of traffic without warning and very limited time to make decision where to coast to as you do not have any driving control. *tr

Check engine light came on. kia said it was controller for radiator cooling fan: part back ordered: told to watch temp when idle. 3 days later, temp never hot, idled for 20 min, ac blows hot though. check engine light no longer on & everything seems to be working fine. 2 days after check engine light off then air bag light came on, drove to work (25 miles) w/light on. parked at work turned off key & then restarted van & light is off. what's the deal? i think there are major electrical issues here. going to take to my local (trusted) mechanic to see if he finds issues. i do not want to pay kia's outrageous prices. will never own another kia & i plan to get rid of this one!!

I have a 2006 kia sedona minivan and i have had multiple issues with the alternator and battery systems. on more than one occassion my vehicle has stalled on the freeway when the alternator stopped charging the battery and power ran out. before this happens, i see all the light indicators on the dashboard for monitored systems go on, such as the abs, tpms, hand brake, esc etc. i have had the alternator replaced once already and it has broken down a second time. i have have the battery replaced atleast 3/4 times already. i am not sure if this is an electrical/wiring defect with my specific vehicle or a defect in the parts or design of the vehicle itself. although i have luckily not had any accidents while these events occurred, i was driving on the freeway both times the alternator conked out and things could easily have ended differently.

Electronic memory rear view mirrors on the kia sedona mini-van turn on their own randomly while driving. this is even after they are reset. this has been reported several times to kia and they are unable to get rearview mirrors to remain in the position they are set to. this is dangerous as while driving and switching lanes under the belief there are no cars present, meanwhile the mirror is facing in the wrong direction. kia has attempted to fix these mirrors twice but the electronics continue to have ghosts and they refuse to stay put.

Headlamps blowing out we have had to replace the headlamps about every 4-6 weeks and have taken it to the dealer 4 times on the head light problem and they say there is nothing wrong. so why do they keep blowing out. we have had both low beams blow out at the same time and have had to drive with the high beams wich is unsafe to on comming traffic let along unsafe for us not to have any low beams. the second problem is a steering wheel vibration that we have has been a problem since we puchased the van. the dealer had it for the 1st month we owned it and still have the problem to this day and we are really feeling unsafe driving it due to the vribration at highway speeds. my wife is terrified to even take it on the highway with our three precious children. so if i could get some feedback on these issues i would greatly appreciate it. after doing some internet research there are alot of the same problems other people are having. i am writeing this complaint so someone does not have to die due to headlights blowing out, or the steering falls apart or a part fails due to the vibration. .

After heavy rain or prolonged rain periods, the cargo area in the back of the van saturates (floods) with water. this was first noticed when the van was parked for the first time outside the garage during the storm of the end of 2008 in the snohomish, washington area. since then, this problem presisted until now. the kia dealer, where the van was bought from as new vehicle, attempted to fix the leak 4 times. the first time they claimed that they sealed body leaks at third brake light and left rear wheel well, but the leak showd up again at the cargo area during the following rain event. the second repair attempt, the dealer claimed that they installed sop rear hatch weatherstrip due to deformation. again the leak presisted and the cargo area was flooded later. the third attempt, the kia dealer found that the rear hatch seal was not installed correctly, and they claimed that they cleaned, resealed, and rechecked and no leak. again the leak returned agin flooding the cargo area. the dealer claimed that they found a leak in the roof seam, and claimed that they cleaned the seam and sealed the seam and sealed the rear seat bolt holes as the fourth repair. stil the leak returned. a fifth repair by the dealer was replacing the rear hatch seal. still the problem of the leak exists saturating the cargo. in addition, mold started growing visible around the cup holders on the secon and third row of the driver side, and the driver seat belt in the area where the belt slides into it's compartment. i found in the last two month a rust stain in the dome light compatment above the front seats. the battery dies within short perioge of time as short as about 2 hours which leads me to believe that the high moisture in the van caused electrical problem that exhausted the battery. colder weather outside the van tends to fog the windows to the point of impairing visibility due to the high moisture and condensation on the windows

The vehicle will lose power. the engine will continue running, but only at idol speed. this event can happen at any time. my wife was driving our kia at the time this event happened. the check engine light and the esc off light came on and the van had no power. after shutting the van off and restarting she was able to drive home with only the check engine light on. i pulled the neg. battery cable and reset the ecm. i drove the van for 200 miles without incident. the next morning the van started normally, but within a minute both lights were on and the engine would not respond to any throttle input. the codes pulled from the computer are p1295, p2106, and p2135. after looking on google, this is a chronic problem plaguing kia and hyundai vehicles. according to what i've read, it can happen at any time, on any model year. nobody has been able to isolate the cause, except to replace the ecm, and replace the throttle body. it is only a matter of time until this happens to somebody in heavy traffic at highway speed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 kia sedona. while making a left turn at 35 mph, the rear driver's side door suddenly opened and then began to close electronically. the door continued to open and close until the contact was able to disconnect the wiring on the defective door. the vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer, but was not serviced for the failure. there were no warnings prior to the failure. the current and failure mileages were 71,124.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 kia sedona lx. the vehicle has a remote starter manufactured by audiovox, model number pro9556. when the contact pre-started her vehicle inside her home with the device, she noticed that the vehicle switched into gear. she drove backwards and crashed into another place of residence. after inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the starter device allowed the vehicle to shift into gears without having a key in the ignition when pressure was applied to the brake pedal. as a consequence, the vehicle could easily be stolen and increased the risk of a crash or serious injury. she notified the manufacturer of the equipment and the vehicle, but neither sources would assume liability. the contact has pictures of the failed component and the crash. the failure and current mileages were 40,000. updated 12/11/08 *bf the vehicle came out of park without the keys being in the ignition. there were also times when the key would get stuck in the ignition. the consumer realized the vehicle could be shifted into reverse without keys. updated 12/11/08 .*jb

Just purchased new 2006 kia sedona van(current miles 512) automatic door locks(safety concern) van has power door looks. kia cust. service says nothing they can do along with the local dealer. hyundai(sister company)on their entourage van does have automatic door looks. i have experience with my hyundai 2006 sonata where in it also came without auto door looks and i took it back to the dealer and with in 20 min. they did a reprogram of the computer and now it has auo door looks. since the kia & hyundai are on the same platform, same engine transmission i believe the situation can be corrected by a simple program change that the manufacture should be responsible for. safety of internal passengers and children is most important and this defect needs to be addressed. *jb
