Rear sliding door wont latch or will come unlatched while driving. this is a serious safety issue. kia has it on a service note but if car is not under warranty they will not repair.

On may 5, 2011, i was driving my 2006 kia sedona. my 2 children (age 2 and 7) and my mother were in the car. all of a sudden, the left passenger sliding door opened on it's own accord. i was frazzled on how this may have happened as the car has great safety ratings which is why i purchased it aug. 2006. i was so upset as this is a safety issue that needs to get addressed immediately. i called major service in lic, ny and they set up an appt for mon. 5/9/11. when i brought the car for service, i learned that this is a voluntary recall. i do not define this as a voluntary recall especially when you have your children present in the car when this occurs. they explained to me that the part had to be ordered because it is on back order. such a recall should first not be voluntary and second should not be on back order. it is now 2 weeks later and i am still waiting for the part. i called kia and they informed me that they will call the service manager and expedite the order. meanwhile, i need to take my son to school and daughter to the babysitter, so i tied a rope to the door to avoid the door from fully opening while driving. i also have to hear the annoying beep notifying me that the a door is open. i am putting my children at risk for kia's negligence. need this corrected immediately.

We own a 2006 kia sedona, bought used. the power sliding doors have malfunctioned numerous times. once on the driver side, and now we are on the third repair for the passenger power sliding door in less than a year. the occurrences are random. the door will not close or latch whether we do it manually or use the power buttons. there is no warning; it just stops working. there are numerous complaints from other consumers about the exact same issue. this is very much a safety related issue, not just an inconvenience. at what point does a complaint stop being a service bulletin and become a product recall? the last repairs we had were covered under warranty, however, warranty does not last forever and it does not seem like the repairs are working for us or other consumers. this is clearly a product defect and not an issue of normal wear and tear. consumers that are experiencing this same problem should not be obligated to have any out-of-pocket expenses related to what is an obvious product defect. thankfully, there have not been any reported injuries or deaths that i was able to find. my hope is that kia is not waiting for that to occur to issue a product recall.

2006 kia sedona ex, passenger power door opens without warning usually after any moisture, heavy rain or car wash, won't close

While driving my 2006 kia sedona on the highway the rear passenger sliding door opened by itself with my child seated next to it in her car seat. after numerous attempts at trying to close the door by the power switches, i had to push the door closed manually. i got in my vehicle and drove to a nearby parking lot to move my child's car seat to the other side. i contacted my dealership to let them know i was on my way and gave an explanation of the issue. i was asked to wait until the next day, that they were busy and already had people waiting. i explained that i had my child in the car and was told perhaps i could use the vehicle without her in the car, but that they probably would not get a chance to fix the problem today. i expressed my disappointment and told him i would be coming now to the dealership as soon as i could get there. the door continued to open throughout my 30 minute drive to the nearest kia dealership, leaving me to pull over and, again, manually try to close the door. this occured 6 times. on pulling into the dealership parking lot, which is down a small hill, the door again slid open and closed. i was told by the mechanic that it was a mechanical problem with the latch on the sliding door. that the vehicles computer system does not recognize a broken latch as it is a mechanical part. i was told that the car looks at the open latch as if someone wants the door to open, not understanding that it could be a defect of the part itself. the part was replaced and i paid out of pocket for the expenses, as my limited warranty had expired. when i asked the dealership if this was a common problem, i was told that they had seen it before, but would not call this issue common. my concern is for the safety of my child. my choice in this vehicle was made based on safety. this defect of the latch on the door is not safe. and, common or not, must be addressed.

The following is copy of a complaint i filed on 3/13 with kia regarding my 2006 kia sedona minivan, which i bought brand new on jan. 11, 2007. this past week i was having trouble with my van sliding doors closing all the way. on 3/9 the passenger sliding door flew open when i made a sharp turn while my sons were sitting in the middle seats. i thought it was just a fluke but on 3/12 as i was driving during rush hour on the high way and hit a bump, the driver side door flew open while my son was sitting in the middle seat. i freaked out completely at the horror of it and then pulled over, shut the door, and held it as i drove straight to my kia dealer. i was relieved the nightmare was over and that we made it safely until i was told that my warranty expired at 60,000 miles (i am at 71,000) and that it would cost me 423.67$ to have my van safe for my children again. i expressed my anger to the service manager who explained that his hands were tied by the warranty. i tried to call kia customer service but it was closed. i am absolutely outraged that instead of being grateful that we made it safely and that i am not suing kia if the unthinkable had happened, that kia has taken this opportunity to charge me to fix their mistake. it is obvious that the latch is faulty because latches don't just wear after 3 years, and the mileage on the vehicle has nothing to do with the wear and tear of the latch. it is a cheap and faulty latch, and kia made me pay for their incompetence. furthermore, i just co-signed for my son to buy his 1st new vehicle from this same kia dealership and i am now hoping against hope that i didn't sign him into a death trap! it is absolutely absurd that a customer with a barely over 3-year-old vehicle should have this issue. i have had other minivans with 100,000 miles and never did a door fly open while i was driving. *tr

In early oct 2009 the driver side rear door of our 2006 kia sedona would not close. it was as if the lock was stuck in the locked position. we had it fixed at the kia dealership. then in dec 2009 the passenger side back door had the same issue. we again had it fixed at the kia dealership. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 kia sedona. while driving approximately 10 mph and proceeding to turn left, the automatic passenger and driver sliding doors released unexpectedly without assistance. the latch detached and would not properly secure the doors. the warning light illuminated on the instrument panel when the doors released. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the failure was related to a malfunction with the latch. the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. the failure and current mileages were 48,300. updated 10/14/08 *bf updated 10/24/08. *jb

On august 12, 2008 i picked my to young children up 8 and 4 from the babysitters. both the driver and passenger side sliding doors would not close, it kept opening and shutting on its own. they finally latched after 5 minutes of trying. when i left and the first right i came to, the drivers side sliding door flew open while i was driving!!!! i instantly pulled over and stopped traffic for this. it took me to turn the power button off and shut it manually, however that still didn't work. the door continued to come open until i got it home. i called kia the next morning my car was towed to kia, later that day i picked my car up with them replacing the passenger side sliding door, the other part was on back order. then on september 3, i took my car in to have the driver side sliding door replaced along with the upkeep of misc. items to my car. here it is on september 8th and the driver side sliding door would not close again. i video recorded and called kia again. my car can not bee seen until wed. it is monday. i believe kia needs to review there policy and procedures for recalls on safety issues. i work in the automotive industry and can honestly say that just one notification of doors opening is 1 to many. i hope the kia is not waiting for a death to take place before they correct this serious safety issue. i am disgusted with this happening again even after this part was replaced on 9/3/08 and it is 9/8/08. not only am i filing this complaint on the web site but i will be contacting the manufacturer as well as contacting my local tv station so that this serious safety issue is addressed. *tr

August 12, 2008 after picking my children, 8yrs old and 4 years old up from the babysitter both sliding doors would shut and reopen on their own. i was able to get to finally get both doors shut by shutting off the electronics of the door. however when i left my babysitters and the first right turn i made the driver side sliding door flew open, while my son was sitting there. i called kia in fort wayne, my car was towed the next day and returned to me on the 13th with the passenger side control module replace. the driver side sliding part was on back order. on sept. 3, 2008 my drivers side sliding door control module was replaced. here it is september 8, 2008 and the driver side passenger door is doing this again. i called kia in fort wayne and they can get mar car in on wednesday. kia fort wayne i feel has done everything they can as far as replacing the part, but this door is coming open while i'm driving, because something is seriously wrong. i have video recorded this door no latching at the time it happened on september 8th. i hope that kia seriously looks into this major safety issue. i work in the automotive industry and can honestly i am disgusted in how kia is handling this safety issue. is kia waiting for a death to take place? i found 4 other complaints on this same make/model on - www.motorpits.com that states they get the information from this website. *tr

Power side passenger door opens without warning when in motion. does not do this all the time just out of the blue no warning. the vehicle has been in the shop several times for the doors and as well as other problems. my main concern is the doors. i have 3 children 3, 7 and 10 and use the vehicle as little a possible and no longer take their friends as well as our dog in this vehicle. i purchased the kia sedona ex in july 14,2006 and it has only 15,165.00 miles on it. i have no confidence in the service department and i don't believe they understand the seriousness of my problem. i have done some research online regarding similar complaints in chat rooms, is anything being done about this issue? i am currently working on a case through the lemon law. *tr

I have owned my 2006 kia sedona since august 2006. during that time, the power sliding doors have proved to be extremely unreliable and potentially unsafe. most of the time, the passenger side sliding door will not close properly. it will power to the closed position, continue trying to close (making a grinding noise) and then either pop open a couple of inches or power open again completely. it will then beep three times. this happens on flat surfaces and even slight inclines. the door has opened whilst driving on the highway. i have been to two dealers (many times) who are unable to replicate the problem or have tried making adjustments to them. i keep on being told that the door is operating as per design. we avoid using the passenger side power sliding door when we can. this problem has recently started happening on the driver's side door as well. judging by the number of complaints about this problem on both the 2006 (and later) kia sedona and hyundai entourage (exactly the same vehicle) on the odi website, and numerous internet newsgroups, this is affecting a lot of people. i love the van, but am completely fed up with the power sliding doors and want them fixed. *tr

I have a 2006 kia sedona. it was bought used in 2007. approximately one year later both sliding door latches broke. once opened in normal everyday use the doors would no longer latch closed. the passenger side sliding door was the first to go. after closing the door repeatedly and having it bounce back open we finally got it to latch shut. we then tied the door shut until we could get it in to be serviced. while driving through a parking lot the door again bounced open as far as the rope would let it. on the day before we took the kia into be serviced the driver side sliding door did the same thing. thankfully the kia was parked in our driveway when this happened. nothing we could do, other than tying the door shut, would get the door to latch. this is a 2 year old vehicle. the latches should not be having problems. thank god no one was injured or worse, however if the doors had fully opened while going down the road at normal speed someone could have easily been injured or fallen out. *tr

I was in a parking lot once again, loading my children in the passenger side of the 2006 kia sedona that we have, and when i went to shut the door, it bounced back open five times without latching...this will make the fourth time that we are going to take it in tomorrow morning for door problems...this will make the third time that we have had the same problems with the passenger sliding door bouncing back open, and not latching. big safety issues that need addressed soon! the first time taken in, problem could not be duplicated...second time, the service dept installed new cables in both sliding doors, the third time was for the drivers side sliding door, that was stuck open and would not shut at all and had to drive down a busy street that way...they found a cable nut that was unplugged in the door and supposedly fixed that, but they would not provide me with any proof of my vehicle being in the service dept while i went to pick up the van from obrien...service guy kept saying he would put my papers in the mail....sounds kinda fishy to me....and now this (doors bouncing open again on the passenger side) i have two very small children that ride in the two seats there, but the service dept and obrien does not seem to care about that...so, we will see what happens in the morning!

I was out shopping with my 2 year old twins and my mother and we were in a parking lot loading our stuff in the 2006 kia sedona once again and the van door would not close. it was stuck open....we waited in the kroger parking lot for about 2 and 1/2 hours while no one at obrien kia would come and get myself and my two small children, and the door was wide open, and it was starting to get dark out and the breeze was picking up...we have had the van in obrien 2 other times for the passenger sliding door bouncing back open and not latching (big safety issue, and now the drivers side sliding door won't even shut (another big safety issue) with small children in the car...who's to say it won't happen while we are driving down the highway and when is it going to actually going to get fixed, or does someone have to get killed first!!!! a receptionist from obrien finally came about 2 1/2 hours later and drove my car down a busy street with the side door still open and the headlights turned off, and took it to the shop to be fixed, and i now have a rental car again. they say it will get fixed this time again! *jb

Have had our 2006 kia sedona van in the shop for passenger sliding door not closing...i will go to close the door, and the door slides right back open and doesn't even latch. this has happened too many times too count now, and this is a brand new van. this is very scary, especially when you don't know if it is going to fly open when you are driving down the road with your kids in the car. the dealership was not able to duplicate the problem, however, an hour after i left the dealership that day, i was stuck in a wal-mart parking lot with my kids in the van and trying to get the passenger sliding door to shut while it was cold outside again! huge safety problem if you ask me and my family! we were just outside again tonight in freezing temps with my 2 year old girls and stood outside in a parking lot for about a 1/2 hour trying to get the door to stay shut. *jb
