Defect SummaryJaguar land rover north america, inc. (land rover) is recalling certain rear driveshaft couplings, land rover branded part number tvf100010, manufactured from april 2011 through november 2011, sold for use as service parts for certain model year 1995-1999 discovery, 1999-2004 discovery ii, and 1995 range rover classic vehicles. some of the rear driveshaft couplings may not have been manufactured to the required engineering design specifications and may exhibit the onset of joint separation, precluded by drive line vibration.
Consequence SummaryIf this increased vibration warning sign is ignored, catastrophic failure of the drive coupling can occur. the driveshaft may detach from the vehicle while in motion resulting in loss of drive and loss of transmission park functionality, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash and/or injury.
Corrective SummaryLand rover will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected rear driveshaft couplers free of charge. the recall is expected to begin on or about april 23, 2012. owners may contact jaguar land rover north america at 1-201-818-8500.

Land rover 2001 discovery ii... i have illumination of hill descent control, abs, traction control dash warning lights... caused by a malfunctioning sensor or modulator...dealers don't even know what it is. web search shows this to be a common problem with this vehicle, with a very costly expense to repair and dealers are replacing modulators at a $2000 plus cost and the problem doesn't go away! i have loss of traction control, anti-lock brakes still work...don't know about hill descent control. no consequences yet, no repairs yet...hope there will be a recall...can't afford to have vehicle repaired and it's no longer under warranty. *jb

Situation: wife and 3-year-old daughter were locked in the car - unable to get out. police and locksmith called - both, unable to unlock car. police had to break window so they could get out. this happened on high temperature day in a public area. *ak wife parked car at grocery store and proceeded to get out. she accidentally pressed down on the door lock, locking the doors. when she attempted to open the door it would not unlock. she attempted to restart car and it would crank but not run. she pulled up on the door lock but door would not open. she attempted to restart car again. when key was entered into ignition, the alarm sounded. she honked down a nearby policeman, who proceeded to call three other policemen and a locksmith. none of which could unlock the car. eventually they broke the window to get them out. car is currently being towed to plaza land rover in st. louis, mo. i have called land rover n.a. no determination as of yet. if this situation had occurred in a non-public location, the results could have been much more dire.

We were in route to my nieces graduation on route 76 which is a 55 mph road. with absolutely no warning the front drive shaft at about 45 mph came apart from the transmission side and caused the front tires to lock up sending myself ,my wife and my nephew careening off the road. we were very lucky, narrowly missing a pole. the truck itself was not damaged by the accident because we stayed on basically grass, but it scared us all. however the truck was damaged by the drive shaft severely, as it tore up everything in its path. the speedo cable, exhaust, and it punched a hole in the top of the transmission destroying it. i have the old drive shaft(what's left of it) and already purchased a new one not realizing at that point that the tranny was destroyed until i replaced it and took a closer look. this truck was purchased new by my mother in law and was passed down to us on our wedding day. i do know a few things about cars and this is one of them, this has to be some kind of design flaw. drive shafts in my experience do not just blow apart with no warning and with no safety strap either. we all made it out of this ok, but i would so saddened if their were injuries to my family due to a 250 dollar poorly designed part. *tr

Abs/ tc/ hill descent light elumination, (3 amigo lights), would indicate there is an abs failure, when taking vehicle to dealer seems to be common occurance with vehilce and can range from abs modulator failure to a sensor. however in my case it was a sensor, or a part (harness overlay) that needs to be installed. while the lights are elluminated, the traction control and the hill decent features of the vehicle do not function, which when in my opinion the traction control could have an adverse effect on the way the abs could funciton or traction on slick surfaces. have not had the item repaired as of today's date. dealer will not warranty the repair if after market brake pads are used and installed recently. *tr

Vehicle was parked outside my home. keys were inside house. daughter returns home to tell me my car is in neighbors yard. upon investigation it seems my gears could be moved without key in ignition and my keys could be removed in any gear selected. my vehicle was not safely in park, maybe r! my vehicle ran down the hill, crossed the road and rested under my neighbors tree, smashed to pulp. manual says keys cannot be removed unless in park. not so. i have video proof and witnesses to problem. dealer examined vehicle and found coins under the gear mount that they say caused the problem. if so there is a major flaw in the mounting that would allow coins to enter the housing. this was a loaner vehicle i purchased from lr. i dont keep coins on my gear tray. lr na state it is not a manufacturing defect as the coins were american not english.it is human error rather than a faulty mount. i disagree. people could have been killed. i was told to use my parking brake at all times. the dealers lot show none with their parking brake on. i could slide coins under the gear mount of some vehicles that were left open. i went on line to speak to mechanics. others have seen this flaw. lr should act quicker to investigate. they told me to activate my insurance, my deductible and rent a car as they dont feel responsible, as yet , if at all. i disagree, have proof and am appealing for safety sake that this flaw is rectified and lr act responsibly. it took the lr rep 1 week to contact my dealer, and 1 week later i am still at the no clue stage with lr. shocked, angry and disappointed with lr reaction. other owners beware and contact your dealer for your kids sake. mr

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - ACCELERATOR PEDAL

On my 2001 land rover discovery ii my gas pedal would get stuck, especially when first turning the car on. sometimes i would press on the gas pedal and and i'd have to press doubly hard to get the car to move, of course resulting in a bigger forward surge than i expected which is dangerous. sometimes i would just tap on the gas pedal and it would surge forward on its own. this reminded me very much of the major recall a dozen or so years ago of the audi cars that had a similar problem. when i brought it to the dealer, i had to pay $89.00 to fix it. they said that yes they know about the problem--the throttle gets dirt in it and backed up and clogged so they have to clean it out. in fact, the service person said, it is so common a problem that he then picked up a throttle on the table, and said they keep this throttle here on display in the showroom to show customers how it gets stuck. although i fixed this problem on march 15, 2004, this incident always bothered me. i feel that the manufacturer knows of this problem which can be quite dangerous and that the problem is actually frequent enough that they have a model on display to warrant it a recall.*ak
