Defect SummaryVehicle description: multi-purpose passenger vehicles equipped with 4.0l single overhead cam engines. the engine fuel lines can be damaged if the vehicle is jump started and the ground cable is attached to the fuel line bracket that is located near the battery. since the bracket is not grounded, the stainless steel fuel line braid could act as a ground potentially overheating the ptfe inner liner of the fuel line resulting in damage to the fuel line.
Consequence SummaryThe fuel lines can leak, and in the presence of an ignition source, a fire could potentially result.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a warning label on the fuel line bracket advising owners not to use it for a jump start ground. also a revised bolt will be installed in the alternator bracket to provide a convenient jump start ground location.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin april 20, 1998.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

While driving on highway with cruise control on, had to slow down, applied brakes, but it didn't turn off the cruise control. kept applying brakes, and cruise control finally turned off. had vehicle serviced for hood latch recall, and let them know about cruise control problem. however, was not able to fix it because they had to order a carburetor kit. *ak

My inertia switch was broke , 1st on july 21, 1999 and left me stranded in the middle of a busy intersection. i was told by covey dealership that my car was fixed and ready to go. i advised them i was taking my car out on the road and wanted to make sure i would not be stranded in the middle of the desert, they assured me all was fine...nine days later, i was stranded 400 miles from home, with the same exact problem, the inertia switch. i was told that the inertia switch should never break down and it happened to me two times in nine days. i am very frustrated with ford/mercury, as i have incrued expenses of $500 while being stranded out of town and they refuse to acknowledge their responsibility in this matter. i have spent countless hours writing letters, and making phone calls, to no avail. i just think consumers should be aware of ford/mercury incompetant customer service department.
