Truck cooling system died which caused the truck to catch fire while driving down the highway, smoke poring out, state troopers had to assist us. my daughter was scared to death and now refuses to get back in the truck even though we got a new engine. to make matters worse we spent 3000 on and engine...500 on cooling system and had the transmission reprogrammed. the truck is still have major problems and now for says it needs the transmission rebuilt or replaced. all of this is out of pocket. we cant even trade it in bc they will only give us 1/2 of what we paid for it 2 yrs ago. nightmare and makes me sick that ford doesn't care. *tr

In july 2009 at 40000 miles the radiator had a hairline fracture and the radiator had to be replaced, paid out of pocket by owner. in march 2010, at 60000 miles, another radiator is being put in this vehicle, again out of pocket expense for owner. there should not be a need for a vehicle to have had 3 radiators at 60000 miles. the dealership states this is a known issue with thise model and that these are poorly placed and manufactured radiators. ford/mercury should recall these vehicles and reimburse out of pocket expenses for anyone that has proof of radiators being replaced.

My 2006 mercury mountaineer has intermittently jolted or lurched forward when stopping for lights and stop signs after speeds over 30 mph. hasn't gotten away from me but feels as if i am going to hit something or someone ahead of me. extremely scary when people are in cross walk. i took my car to the ford dealer shortly after buying it used. the dealer checked it out and denied it was happening. that was years ago and tonight i saw numerous complaints on another website about this problem. was looking because now i am getting a grinding noise from my wheels which persists after a brake job that didn't fix it as i thought. both problems are separate but i see a pattern of them on this vehicle now.

I purchased the 2006 mercury mountaineer in july 2011. when i went to take the kids on vacation the car hesitated and stopped on the highway then felt like we were rear ended, very dangerous with the hesitation on acceleration almost crashed. called the place i purchased they have now replaced the torque converter and reset the tcm the vehicle is even worse and they also have had it for 34 days on and off. called ford they said they have no program to fix and will not replace the transmission which needs to be replaced. the dealer reports without a bad code even though they know the vehicle is hazardous they cannot find the problem to fix, i said please just replace the transmission and unfortunately to no vail i have puchased a $18,000 hazard that i only was able to drive for 30 days, traded my other vehicle and gave them $1600 cash for downpayment i just want my vehicle fixed....

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 mercury mountaineer. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the radiator started to overheat. the driver was able to continue driving and added water to the radiator. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they advised him that the failure was caused by normal wear and tear. in addition, he noticed that when shifting from park to reverse, the vehicle would hesitate and jerk violently into the correct gear. the failure mileage was approximately 53,000. the vin was unavailable.

Two complaints. 1) transmission downshifts hard when slowing, such as for a stop sign. mercury says it is a software problem. they are aware of the problem but won't fix it under the extended warranty. my vehicle has 37,700 miles. 2) extreme wire wear. it came with michlin tires and i have gotten far less than 20,000 miles out of them. i am now replacing with bridgestone. i don't know if it is the tire or something defective with the vehicle. the dealership lied to me when i took it in for them to check. the michlins are wearing in the center of the tread and the dealership told me that it was because i had 45 pounds in the tires. i am very concerned about all aspects of upkeep of my vehicle. it calls for 32 psi front and rear. the tires are always within a couple of pounds of that figure. granted the wear does look like overinflation. something is wrong with the tire or the vehicle. i have made sure the alignment is right on and it does alighn properly so i tend to believe it is the michlin cross terrian 235x65x18 tires. other than the trans which the dealership advises will be fixed with a software upgrade and the tire problem, everything else is very satisfactory with the vehicle. *tr

My car has had a continuing problem with the transmission. it shifts roughly and lurches when beginning to move. for example, when stopped at a stoplight, and then beginning to drive, it will lurch, jolting the passengers. our driveway is sloped toward the street. when i park the car, i always set the emergency brake as well. the car always rolls a few inches before the brakes lock, even though it is stopped and in park. on sep. 4, 2009, my mother borrowed my car to go to lunch. she couldn't find the emergency brake release. she put the car in park and got out to locate the emergency brake. she found it and released it. the car popped into reverse and rolled backwards to the street. the door knocked my mother down and she hit her head hard enough to sustain a closed head injury with minor bleeding in her brain. the car rolled across the street, over the curb and hit a neighbor's poplar tree. the entire tailgate was destroyed, there was some interior damage and the frame was warped. the tailgate had to be replaced, the bumper and trailer hitch had to be repaired and the frame straightened. my mother was in hospital overnight and had to have two ct-scans. she still has headaches and transient dizziness. we are just fortunate the car didn't run her over, hit a pedestrian (there are a lot of walkers in our neighborhood), hit a car or a neighbor's house. *tr

2006 mercury mountaineer slipped out of parked in driveway and hit mother inlaws 2005 gmc envoy. this is one of a hand full of times it has slipped off park. took it to the dealership 3 times and nothing, now i am fighting with grand ledge ford, grand ledge, mi to get it fix or replace the transmission before someone get seriously hurt or even dies. this is a very scary situation and needs to be recalled as soon as possible. *tr

Had to replace two radiators within 30,000 miles of replacement. exactly how many complaints, or should i say deaths (?) are needed to trigger an investigation of a company gladly receiving assistance while outputting inferior vehicles. no vehicle manufactured in 2006 should need three new radiators within 3 year and 70k miles. stop letting ford off the hook and get serious about getting to the bottom of their issues. just do a search on 2006 mercury mountaineer and you will clearly see there are issues with the cooling as well as the automatic transmission. in fact, our model has the same issue that others have reported with the automatic transmission and it will sometimes no moves gears, slip a gear, and tug like it is pulling out of mud at a stop light. open a full blown investigation into their lack of quality control and the lack of professionalism on the part of the dealerships for not reporting this to corporate. *tr

I have just purchased a used 2006 mercury mountaineer awd v8. when the vehicle is coming to a stop, the transmission lunges forward as it is downshifting. it feels just like another vehicle has hit my vehicle from behind. this is a dangerous situation since as the vehicle lunges forward, it could hit a pedestrian in a cross walk or hit another vehicle in front of me. *tr

My 2006 mountaineer has transmission problems. while coming to a stop at a light there is a loud pop or thud like noise as if the transmission is popping into place. also transmission slips when going forward. it jerks especially at low speeds such as pulling out of a parking space. there is definitely something wrong with the transmission. poor design or manufacturing but definitely something is wrong. you feel like you have been struck from behind when the popping/thud noise occurs at a light. very unsettling. also car lurches forward when pulling off from a standing position such as at a light and you feel like your going to hit the car in front of you. *tr

I own a 2006 mercury mountaineer (v8 awd). everytime i stop the transmission jolts forward as if we have been involved in a rear-end collision. i have called ford motor company to complain and they have agreed that there is a problem but not to the degree that they would initiate a recall. this is very dangerous and someone is eventually going to get hurt if not killed. *tr

2006 mercury mountaineer. the transmission has problems. it punches in and out of gears, makes a loud grinding noise and pulls the car to the left. it has problems going into reverse. it does not happen all the time but i would say about 3 to 4 times a week. it is not safe to drive when the car does this. i am driving my 1 year old in this car and i have to concentrate so hard to make the car go straight and to put minimal pressure on the gas pedal so it doesn't jerk us too hard. it is at the dealership now and from what i have read online they will try to put a bandaid on the problem until the warranty runs out! this car only has 26,000 miles on it! i just bought it used about 8 months ago. *tr

Bought this mercury mountaineer march 2007. worse vehicle ever owned. most of the time when stopping i get that thud noise. i feel like i got hit from the behind. when in traffic i worry alot also. i bought this truck in 7 times and problem still occurs. dealership will not fix it until i show them the problem. i told them it does not happen everyday. with my luck it did not happen when i was there. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 mercury mountaineer. the contact started the vehicle and it immediately stalled. the vehicle was towed to a local dealer and they stated that the entire computer system failed and was replaced. two months later, the engine light illuminated. she took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that there was emission failure. the contact also began experiencing failures with the front passenger window and the frame was replaced. the engine light still continued to illuminate and the dealer stated that it was due to the catalytic converter, in addition to the transmission. the dealer did not know how to repair the failures. the current mileage was 1,500 and failure mileage was 411.

I bought my 2006 mercury mountaineer april 26, 2006. i started having the transmission problems december 2006. when you put on breaks to stop you hear a thud and the vehicle will actual throw you forward in the seat. it feels like you might not actually stop when it first happens. this happens daily. the fist time i took the vehicle in and left it with them, they drove it and said they did not find anything. january 2007 i took the car back to them and they did dive it and have the same problem. the called ford and ford told them there was a recall on it and they needed to put it on the computer and do a recalibrating. they did this and the problem was gone for a week and it returned. i took it back to them and they replaced a part in the transmission, this lasted a week and it started the same thing again. i am now still fussing with them about getting if fixed. they kept it 5 days last week and did nothing to it. i had an appointment with a ford rep. last week and this past week and he did not show for either appointment. *tr

I received my vehicle 1/18/2006 a mercury mountaineer. on my survey that i returned to ford in march of 2006, i told them that i hated their slip-o-matic transmission. i do not have all the visits documented but the second problem we had was the vehicle would come to a stop at a stop light and then a few seconds later you would feel a thud like you were hit from behind by another vehicle. we had the transmission reprogrammed and the valve replaced and that problem seemed to be resolved. but the slipping through the gears continued to be a persistent problem. it is almost as if when you pull out into the highway that you are in suspended animation for 1 to 1.5 seconds. this is particularly unsettling when crossing several lanes of traffic from a stopped position... like pulling out of a gas station (with the traffic) while a semi is coming up behind you real fast or turning across traffic with out the green arrow and you really have to get across quickly sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. this occurs randomly but yet approximately 10 to 20 times a week. right now the suv is in the service center. i have requested the next repair to be performed via tsb 07-13-8 but the dealer is insisting that i must demonstrate the problem before they will repair it per above mentioned tsb....... they took my word before for the reprogramming and the valve replacement but now they do not seem to believe me anymore. *jb

The transmission in my 2006 mercury mountaineer has popped into reverse twice once it was placed into park, causing it to roll backwards. it also rolls forward and backwards when placed in park until it catches and finally locks in place. when climbing hills or steep grades, the transmission will surge, and when coming to a stop, the transmission will shift hard and jerk. *nm
