Defect SummaryCertain passenger vehicles equipped with adjustable padels are being recalled in order to adjust the brake and accelerator pedals to a minimum of 50 mm of lateral separation. simultaneous application of both the brake and accelerator pedals could result in an increase in engine rpm.
Consequence SummaryThis could result in a customer experiencing an unintended vehicle speed increase or a perceived unable to stop condition.
Corrective SummaryOwners will be instructed as to the proper way to set the position of the pedals and to take their vehicles to a dealer to have the spacing between the brake and accelerator pedals measured. if the spacing is found to be less than 50 mm, the dealer will adjust the pedals to increase the distance between them to greater than 50 mm. owner notification began october 28, 2002. owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford conducted a recall in march, 2001 to correct a defect affecting the brake light switch in my 2000 through early-2001 taurus and sable vehicles equipped with power adjustable pedals (recall 01v-078).rq03-008 was opened to investigate complaints concerning the remedy and scope of 01v-078.odi's analysis identified concerns with post-repair failures in recalled vehicles, failures in my 2001-02 vehicles with adjustable pedals that were not included in recall 01v-078, and failures in my 2000 vehicles with fixed pedals.(note: the manufacturer failure data in this resume includes all crashes and injuries, but the complaint information is limited to my 2001-02 vehicles that were not included in the scope of recall 01v-078.)on march 1, 2004, ford notified nhtsa of a safety defect in my 2000 through early-2003 taurus and sable vehicles equipped with adjustable pedals and my 2000 subject vehicles equipped with fixed pedals (recall 04v-106).the notification identified three factors contributing to brake light circuit failures:(1) continuing grease contamination issues that prompted 01v-078; (2) misalignment of the booster rod pin and the brake light switch; and (3) wire assembly fatigue.the first two conditions were limited to vehicles with adjustable pedals and the latter condition affected vehicles with fixed pedals.ford will instruct owners to bring their vehicles to a dealer to have the brake light switch and associated wiring replaced with a re-designed brake light switch and wiring assembly.

There was a recall on my car back in mar 02 2004 (ford recall number 04s12) for an exterior lighting:brake lights:switch, which was (according to ford) done jan 10 2005. i had failed again on 11/15/2012 leaving me without brake lights and not being able to get it out of park. had to put it in neutral first before i started my car so i could drive it to get fixed.

My 2001 mercury sable accelerated as i entered the highway. the car would not stop even when i applied the brake. i called 911. the 911 operator suggested that i apply the parking brake which i did. i went about 15 miles riding the shoulder going between 60-70 miles per hour. i eventually exited the highway but could not stop even at the end of the exit ramp. i made a right hand turn. at this point i had reduced my speed to approximately 30 miles per hour. the car eventually landed in a ditch. at that point, i ended my call with 911. i looked to my left and found four men yelling to me to get out of the car. i then learned that the car was on fire. i exited the car. the four men put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. the car was towed to a mercury dealership where it is documented that it was in fact the speed contol cable that caused the car to accelerate. again, between the 911 call, the information on file with the mercury dealer and the insurance claim, the cause of the incident is documented.

I have a 2001 mercury sable ls with 9000 miles. i was attempting to park the car in front of a store in a shopping plaza located in cocoa beach ,fl. when i applied the brakes to park in the parking place, the brakes failed and the engine made a revving noise and the car leaped forward jumping the curb and crashing into a brick support column. this car was recalled for the brake pedal and accelerator problem and was supposedly fixed at the mercury dealers. i was transported to the hospital by the emergency squad. i was treated for a large gash in the forehead and xrays were taken of the chest, back and ribs which were not fractured but severely bruised. i also sustained two black eyes caused by my sunglasses hitting the steering wheel. i was wearing my seatbelt, however, the airbags did not deploy. estimated cost to repair my car is $7048. *ak

I went in to the local dealer to have a coolant leak checked and was told that my rear springs, struts and brakes were all bad, the springs were broken and were hazardous to drive with. total cost of these repairs is well over $1,500. i asked about the recall on the springs and was told it was only for the front of the vehicle. the recall should include the rear also because the same springs were used in the rear as in the front. i should not have to pay to have all these things repaired because of faulty springs. i was also told the other items, struts and brakes were likely cause from the bad springs. ford needs to be accountable, many other people have had this problem. *tr

My master cylinder failed causing me to lose my brakes. i crashed my car into a pole. the insurance company totaled my car. after a car is totaled the insurance company would only send it to the salvage yard. i insisted on knowing what went wrong. a simple test was done by turning on the motor and pressing on the brake pedal. if it goes to the floor gradually then you know it was a master cylinder failure. this happened 3 times. the manufacture didn't want to deal with me and the dealership didn't either. how many cars fall between the cracks and the reason for serious brake failure never reaches the very people who can correct it?? *tr

I was driving my car at about 20 miles an hour and i felt a vibration. i made a decision to pull the car over and get off the roadway and stop. when i tried to use my brake i felt the resistance half way down and then it suddenly went all the way to the floor. i saw myself gaining on the car in front of me. i quickly turned to the right and up on the sidewalk hitting the curb in the process and then instead of hitting a store wall i turned slightly to the left and headed dead center for an edison pole. i could have killed someone. i need to talk to someone who can tell me who to get to look into my brake system to see what went wrong. i am so scared to ever drive that car again. my car is only 5 years old and in excellent condition and maintained well. never had any hint that my brakes were faulty. my car has been looked at and he said the body can be fixed. he doesn't know about the brakes. i need an expert to look at those brakes. can you help me???? my air bags did not deploy. *tr

While driving, the braking system failed completely without warning. i took extreme measures to avoid a pedestrian and a parking garage. i had the vehicle towed to the dealership and was informed that the abs brain was defective. i am very concerned about the lack of redundancy in the braking system and question if the vehicle is safe. the dealership service advisor claims he has not seen this before and that the needed compnent for repair would take a couple of days to come in. this provides us little piece of mind. please provide us aan un-biased investigation.*ak

At approximately 34000 miles left front brake cylinder leaked, and caused sever damage to the braking system in my car. this was covered by the dealer, and they replaced all of the brake shoes, replaced the hydraulicsto the front brakes, turned the rotors etc. now, 20000 miles later, the same type of leak is occuring again. why the same type of failure? i can understand that the brake shoes need replacement periodically, and that the system needs to be serviced, but to have the complete hydraulic system fail (again) seven months after a full replacement?*ak
