Defect Summary	Vehicle description: mini vans. the bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. if the bolt is loose, the gas strut is over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles is higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.
Consequence Summary	Personal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Corrective Summary	Dealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. if the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.
Notes	Owner notification began during august 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

	Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi is closing this investigation.

	Nhtsa recall 00v305000 concerning steering wheel separation. consumer requested a rebate in the amount of $242.98 for the steering wheel assembly repairs due to a recall. consumer was informed the vehicle was not covered under recall due to the vehicle identification number. ak. there were other problems with the vehicle such as a malfunctioned air condition, driver's seat, transmission, and a paint defect.jb *ts

	1993 plymouth voyager. manufacture defect with the paint. all the vans made in that year and 1994 are peeling and rusting in the same places. i feel the company neglected to recall these vans to be repainted to save them money. my van is in good condition and i would like for it to be property repainted up to standard. *nm

	Sliding door on my minivan fell off onto my son and my nephew while they were opening the door to get into the van. *ak

	On 1/9/99 the passenger door of my 1993 voyager flew open as i was turning a corner. my son was in his seatbelt and was therefore not injured. the reason the door opened was a latch failure. the door latch had torn away form the sheet metal on the door. the door latches on both doors have repeated failed to engage properly. usually this was remedied by closinf the door again. i have brought this to the attention of the dealers during the warrany period. i was told that the problem was loose screws in the door latch assembly. the screws were tightened and sometimes replaced but the problem persisted. now i'm told that the problem is really due to improper door alignment. this caused the latches to loosen. however after repeated operations in this condition it also caused the metal around the door latch to fail. the metal is ripping around the drivers door latch as well. the cast to repair is $250 per door. chrysler will not assist with repairs since the car is out of warranty. (even though the problem was brought to their attention during warranty and misdiagnosed. this may be a serious safety problem.

	The driver side door is coming loose from the hinges. the wind would blow against it while driving and caused it to shake. the insurance agent indicated, after inspecting it, that it was a manufacturer defects. had taken to dealer and mechanic had welded the hinges but that failed to keep the door shut. mr

	Dealership refused to send a mechanic to repair 3 recall notices, including recall 99v113000/ air bag failure; recall 97v148000/ seat belt failure, and 96v099ooo/ abs brake failure. authorized another mechanic to perform work to repair recall, or provide consumer with necessary parts to repair the defects. consumer was informed that dealership was under no obligation to perform these functions. ak the consumer had asked the manufacturer for assistance in repairing the steering wheel, the windshield wiper pivot and lift gate supprt bolts, because the parts were defective, but the manufacturer refused to help. yh
