Investigation currently open by nhtsa ea01007. my airbag light would come on and sometimes extinguish during driving but come back on later. finally the airbag light stayed on constantly. over the course of a month, the cruise control and horn quit working as well. i inadvertantly stumbled across this open nhtsa case while looking for a wiring diagram to begin looking into the horn problem first. while the van is 6 years old i understand that dodge/plymouth have replaced over 400,000 clock spring assemblies. the dealership charged me $223.30 to replace the part including labor. it would seem that a fair amount of these assemblies have failed which i would expect to last for the lifetime of the vehicle. i would have been willing to pay for the part if dodge/plymouth would install it for free. not only did they charge to install it, they were ready to charge me an additional $70.00 diagnostic fee if that wasn't the problem. i'm very disappointed that dodge/plymouth is very well aware of this problem which is obviously safety related as i have driven around for 2 - 3 months with an airbag light on which i'm sure others are doing and then they make a nice profit on charging me to fix a defect they are very well aware of. if i can answer any other questions, please feel free to contact me.

During hot weather dash air bag indicator light illuminated, horn did not function & cruise control no longer functioned. certified service center has identified problem is due to clock spring in steering column (ref nhtsa action #: ea01007). air bag light came on first...cruise control still work intermittently. did not become aware of horn malfunction until needed for collision avoidance (near miss, no damage). reference nhtsa recall # 98v046 for same issue in different make vehicle by same manufacturer. reference chrysler tsb # 08-010-01 may 01 that covers broad range of makes and models. this investigation was opened in feb-2001. why was a recall issued on wrangler and not minivan when both use same system? *ak

The air bag light was intermitent for the last couple of months but 2 weeks ago it came on and stayed on. i saw on tv that this was a known problem with the clock spring int the 1996 voyagers and could be harmful if the bag accidently went off or worse didn't go off in a crash. please push a recall! the wiper blades have come on without activation since new. the dealer replaced the switch once but said they could not duplicate whenever i took it back under warranty. now they come on frequently and it becomes distracting to the point that it could cause an accident. the fuel gauge indicates 3/4 full when the tank is full and the low fuel lite comes on when there is still 5-6 gallons in the tank. this was reported under warranty but i was told there was nothing wrong. now it's in the tech bulletins and i have to pay to have it fixed. the door locks have been replaced on 3 of the 4 doors by chrysler. the drivers door twice, and sliding door twice. once we couldn't get out the sliding door. the ignition module went bad this labor day weekend. i parked and the car wouldn't start so i had it towed to hoffman chrysler in hagerstown, md. they troubleshot it to the module no having a ground. the warning code indication the auto shutdown circuitry was activated. what if this happened on the interstate at 65 mph?*ak

In march my airbag light stayed on and then the windshield wipers failed to work. i then a burning odor came out of the heating unit. i brought it into a chrysler dealership to get fixed. this is the work needed to repair the car. switch multifuntion, clockspring for airbag. complete replacement of the bcm due to the airbag malfuntion and wiper malfunction., replaced the multifunction switch. bcm recontroller reprograming and replaced clock spring to repair air bag lamp coming on. the final cost with labor totaled $843.44 i called chrysler to see if this malfunction would be covered and i was told no. the service department said it is rare that the system fails in a car with my milage. chrysler was very nasty on the phone and said they would not consider any responsibility towards the payment of the defect. i asked to speak to a manager etc....and i was told that i could not be forwarded to anyone else. i was told by the rep on the phone that the final decision was made. last week i heard on the radio about an investigation on the possible defects of the vehicles clockspring assembly which provides the electricity for the wipers etc....i did not check to see if it had affected the horn or cruise control because i had not used both during that time. it seems the faulty clockspring possible blew out the electrical system which resulted in the need for a replaced bcm component. i am hoping if this is found to be a defect chrysler will reimburse the $843.44 to me.*ak

I recently heard a news report on a local radio station that the government has launched an investigation into the combined failure of the air bag system, cruise control and horn on approx 3 million mini vans. unfortunately, i suspect my van currently has this same problem. it has not been examined by my chrysler dealer although i did contact them and they advised they were unaware of this type of problem and claimed to have not received any report from chrysler about this. i also called chrysler customer assistance and they too were unaware of any problems and simply documented my concern. i would like to know if chrysler is indeed aware of multiple problems with this same failure or are they avoiding admitting to the investigation. i was quite suprised to read in my paper today about the investigation (ea01007) and how the symptems matched mine exactly. about 6 months ago, the air bag light illuminated apon start up and now stays on for the full duration of the drive. a few weeks after that, the cruise control began a bizzare on again, off again pattern. each time you started the car, it was a crap shoot to see if cruise would be working. a few weeks after that, we noticed the horn no longer works. i'm leary of bringing the vehicle in for diagnostics considering some of the repair costs i've heard, associated with air bag system repairs. i would like to be advised as to what chryslers response was and is regarding your announced investigation. thank you. *ak

While stopped at a stop sign, a car struck my voyager in the center of the front bumper. the other car was moving at 35 mph and my bumper was pushed into the radiator 10-12 inches and the frame was bent. neither airbag deployed. the dealer which repaired my voyager said the sensors were located to either side of the impact, and since no contact was made with them... the airbags won't deploy. my complaint is that they should have deployed under such an impact. i now wonder if they will in another accident. *ak

The service man (mac) at the dealership where the van was repaired told us the reason for the airbag light coming on for no reason was because of a bad clock spring. he said that this could cause the airbag to possibly not deploy in an accident and/or even deploy when you're just driving down the road. our thoughts immediately were safety related and contacted daimlerchrysler who sent me an email telling me the recall process. they also agreed to pay for the part only, we paid for labor. we were wondering how a part could go bad that was never used?*ak

I had contacted dealer about problem while vehicle was on extended warranty, i was told that air bag failures were not covered by extended coverage nor covered by manufacturer because of ntsa issues. i now drive a vehicle that i consider unsafe to be in because the manufacturer will not take responsibility for repairs. isn't this a safety issue that the ntsa should force the manufacture to take responsibility for??? *ak

5/21/96, my son and i were impacted at left front of our 1996 ply voyager van by a 1987 chrysler. when i applied the brakes, they locked up, we slid slighthly to the right side -- the force from the impact was enough to shatter the transmission housing, the starter, damage the rack and pinion steering, and crumpled the front end in such a way that the passenger door could not be opened. the shoulder harnesses locked up, but neither air bag deployed. the car was alegedly looked at by chrysler engineers and it was determined that the sensor had not been hit... my son and i both sustained permanent injuries as a result of this accident. my question, with this speed, and this front end damage, why did the bags not deploy? i don't buy not hitting the sensor. i've read report after report identifying the sensor as deploying at 8mph... this accident was serious. law enforcement at the scene said 5mph faster and there would have been a fatality.( dot number: )
