Defect SummaryVehicle description: mini vans built with 3.3l and 3.8l engines have fuel rails with nitrole rubber o-ring seals that can degrade over time. fuel leakage from the underhood fuel injection fuel rail could result, increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a seal on the vehicle fuel rails to prevent external leakage of fuel from the fuel rail crossover tube, should the existing o-rings continue to degrade. owner notification began on january 25, 2002. due to the large quantity of vehicles involved in this campaign, the owner notification will be phased over the next several months. however, if a vehicle is leaking fuel from the o-rings, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - DELIVERY
Strong odor of gasoline that seems to come from the engine compartment is present, but not consistently. i have taken the vehicle to a local garage and they could smell the gas also, but could not locate the problem. i then brought the van to the dealer. after hearing about a recall on theses vans because of a fuel line seal problem, i took the vehicle to the dealer and contacted chrysler. the dealer also could not find the problem, however the gasoline odor was not present that day. chrysler would not authorize the recall repair since the dealer did not detect a problem and the recall did not involve 3.0 liter engines. since i have not been able to find the problem, i continue to drive the vehicle. i would like to know if anyone is having this type of problem with this particular vehicle.*ak

Our van fuel pump / fuel line failed at or near the gas tank. while driving, my wife noticed a smell (which turned out to be fuel). i met her, and to my shock, the vehicle was enveloped in gasoline fumes !! we abandoned the vehicle immediately, due to obvious concerns of fumes combustion. we contacted a tow truck, had the van towed to a repair shop which happened to be within 2 miles, and had repairs made. at the shop, they would not pull the vehicle into the garage because the underside was soaked in gasoline ! they replaced the fuel pump / line assembly. i am contacting nhtsa at this point due to an article in the detroit news (july 18, 2001)which indicates this failure might be a known/recurring problem. since i saw my wife sitting on the side of the road in a van engulfed in gasoline vapors, i am not at all happy or impressed with the thought that someone knew this might happen to her. thank you for your support.*ak
