While having some work done on our 1998 plymouth voyager, the mechanic noticed that the area at the top of the strut and spring connected under the hood has both corrosion and perferation. it covers about one-third of the strut tower. i called a dealer and was told that this rust-through was not covered under their warrenty. i was also told that this condition is potentially dangeropus if the strut and spring rust completely through. the rest of the body is rust free. i also found that in 2002 a service bulletin 23-044-02 dated october 14, 2002 covered this problem. since this is a major safety and cost issue for my family, i would like to know if there is anything i can do to get chrisler to fix the problem?*ak

Dt*: the contact stated that the left front strut tower of the vehicle appeared to have an unusual amount of rust on top. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop on 12/28/04 who determined it would have to be replaced and that it was a common problem on this model. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop on 02/18/05 for replacement of front struts, rear shocks, and wheel alignment. the repair shop noticed that the right front strut tower was also rusted and would need to be replaced. updated 8/9/2006 - rust was first observed by and independent repair shop may 6, 2004. *nm

1989 plymouth voyager left and right front towers are consumed by corrosion exposing the mcpherson strut assemblies and severely weakening the load bearing structure causing serious risk of strut tower failure as on or both struts will penetrate into the engine compartment causing the front of the vehicle to drop to the ground. should such failure occur while the vehicle is in motion at highways speeds, loss of vehicle control will result, causing serious injury or death. this is a known defect covered by chrysler corporation in a technical service bulletin (tsb) labeling the problem as merely cosmetic.

The strut tower is rusting very bad and about to break off. this is a very big danger for my wife and four kids.. i first notice the rust 2 weeks after we bought this 1998 plymouth voyager, and the dealer would not fix it. it been 3.5 years know and there are holes we can see though. not very good. i also noticed the van is about 1/2 lower to the ground from the side the rust is bad. the only had 62,000 mile ib it when we noticed the rust. there should be a recall. shops told me every 1998 plymouth voyager they see has got the same problem. *tr

1998 plymouth minivan. structure rusted through on left front strut tower. the problem was caught when there was approx. 90% rust through. a pothole hit or just severe braking could have had catastrophic results. chrysler advises that they will do nothing but say sorry. is this a chronic problem ?? *nm

While having a new battery installed on our 1998 plymouth voyager, we were shown that the strut tower is rusting and cracked on the top. subsequent examination by other mechanics shows that the rusting started in the top plate and worked its way down to the second plate, which is not as bad. the comment we keep hearing a lot of is, i've never seen anything like this. yet one of our neighbors who has the dodge version, same year, also has the same problem. i am wondering if you have heard of anything like this with these vans and/or if this could be a problem with them that is just showing up now. *jb

No one was hurt in the accident when i hit a piece of metal in the road. the object tore off a body frame member and then punctured the plastic fuel tank. gas was leaking everywhere. i can not believe that anyone would place a plastic fuel tank directly in the path of a front wheel drive vehicle. the front wheels being drive wheels tend to propel objects back at the tanks. conversations with mechanics have informed me that over time the tank will eventually start to leak from the stones that will be thrown back from the fromt wheel. i recentlly read in the local paper where a ford minivan with a plastic fuel tank devloped a lead while traveling on a local road and had to be towed. it is even ore amazing to me that these systems that are designed to fail and will impact the environment in a negative way are legal. if the car markers are going to use plastic fuel tanks they should not be located in a direct path behind a wheel and they should have a metal shield. *ak
