While returning on a trip and using the turn signal normally, there were several incidents in which the turn signal sounded like it was working at about twice the normal rate, however there was no indication that the turn lights were coming on. on one particular instance, when this happened, the turn signal got extremely warm to the touch and smoke was observed coming from the switch. there were several subsequent incidents during this trip and on subsequent days, but only the one in which the switch actually smoked (which is why i indicated a fire above). when i called saturn (gm dealership) about this, they mentioned that a similar switch was under recall, but not this one. after having replaced the turn signal switch, i had asked if saturn wanted the defective unit. surprisingly, saturn didn't seem too concerned and asked me to contact the dealership. the dealership, in turn, told me that all they could determine is that there was a problem with the switch and to contact saturn customer service. i am quite certain that if we hadn't corrected the issue (which is difficult to describe) that a more dangerous situation could've been caused, and that this switch design is faulty and may pose a safety (thermal) concern. i have kept the old switch and will gladly provide it to nhtsa if requested to do so. i didn't feel it safe to keep using the old switch, and while the cost was rather minimal to have it replaced, i'm surprised that saturn didn't offer to reimburse me and as i stated previously, didn't request the faulty part to be returned. i have not had any similar incidents since replacing the switch, which certainly corrected it. the part number listed on the old switch is shown as being ar339790736/22679804. in order to not cause the switch to go into the mode described above, it was best to not use the turn signal any more than possible. *tr

I was rear ended on march 19th in springdale arkansas. i was parked at a stop light when a car rear ended me. the driver did not have insurance and his name was kyle roberts address on the accident report was 601 w easy street rogers arkansas. the vehicle was a mitsubishi mirage license plate 551 rkz and drivers license number 931627087. the officers name was proctor badge number 356. i received the letter from the insurance company progressive stating that he did not have insurance. the following day after the accident on the way home my service engine light, oil light and several other lights flashed. there was a loud popping noise and black smoke came pouring out and everything shut down. i have since noticed there is a recall for this same thing but was told it is not for my specific vin number. i am arguing with the insurance company because they refuse to repair the engine part which they said was not due to the accident. i think the impact from the wreck knocked the oil filler cap off because when the geico adjusters had the car they could not find it. i found the oil filler cap down in the front between the front of the engine and front of the car. oil was all over the engine and seized from what the geico adjusters said. i am placing a complaint with the insurance commissioner on geico for not picking me up for road side assistance, taking to long to repair the bumper, not knowing what they are doing taking so long to be able to repair the car. they tried charging me a $500 deductible when i had uninsured and underinsured motorists and several other issues with them.

I have an 03 saturn vue with multiple issues. i should have complained years ago but i am only now seeing the blogs regarding this dangerous hideous vehicle. the back window wiper blades work whenever, sporadically; the emergency flashers are inoperable most of the time, the button that turns them on is defective,;the electrical system- caution lights come on and off;reduced power light comes on and the car will not accelerate in heavy traffic. i have had some close calls in this vehicle and i realized it should of not been allowed to be on the road. it is a disaster. why are our tax dollars bailing out companies like gm when they make such defective, death traps as this? something is truly wrong here. run from the saturn vue -hopefully it will not be on the road much longer but i just don't want to be one of its casualties.

We were driving to work in our 2003 saturn vue 5 speed, going 60 mph on the freeway when all of a sudden the rpm's started to go up and down when we let off the gas and would stall when we would shift. we figured it out pretty fast and looked for an on ramp while we tried to pigeon foot the gas and brake to prevent a stall in the middle of the freeway, then power steering went out and the dashboard lost power, we knew that something was very very wrong and that if we didnt' get off the freeway, we could be in serious trouble if the engine lost power. we spotted an off ramp ahead and with no power steering and no dashboard lights we crossed 3 lanes of traffic, just as we hit the off ramp the car started to sputter (rpm's going up and down) even with our foot on the gas, we lost all power and the engine quit in the middle of an intersection and almost got hit by a truck coming down the hill. luckily he swerved and missed another car coming the opposite direction. we pushed the car to an incline and rolled the car into a park and ride where my husband tried to figure out what was wrong. he figured it was the alternator so we had a friend pick one up for us and meet as the park and ride. he replaced the alternator and as usual for jump starting a car, we turned off all electrical draws (radio, a/c, fan ect.) the car started up, the rpm's flucuated briefly, then it was ok. 2 weeks later the exact same thing happend on a highway going 50 mph, luckily we were able to pull over and try to fix it again. same thing, turned off all electrical, jumped the car and started right up. 3 weeks later the rpm's started fluctuating and we figured out we needed to pigeon the gas and brake so it wouldn't stall and limped it home. saturn says it's the bcm computer and it's a common problem. we now have to pay $700 hundred dollars and find a way to get the saturn to the dealership without wrecking.

On our 2003 saturn vue the locks kept unlocking and locking at random (whether the car was running or not), then it did not respond to the keyless entry. the horn kept going off randomly and could not be stopped. on 05/14/08 we took the vehicle in for diagnostics. we were told the bcm (body control module) needed to be replaced. we were told that a bad bcm could affect other components of the car. i feel that this could be dangerous especially while driving on the highway and the car suddenly stops. i looked the bcm for saturn cars on the internet and there seemed to be several complaints about this being a recurring problem for saturns. i don't understand why this part has not been recalled. *tr

I have 2 saturns, a 2001 sc2 and a 2003 vue. a few months ago, the battery on the sc2 went dead -- this was the 2nd battery since the vehicle was newly purchased. so now the sc2 is on its 3rd battery since taken off the saturn showroom. the vue was also purchased new and today the entire electrical system was dead. this vehicle is already on its 2nd battery so (it appears) that will need replacement as well. there appears to be a major electrical fault with saturn vehicles that they refuse to admit. otherwise, why would 2 saturns (different models) go through a total of 5 (60-month) batteries in less than 5 years. i respectfully request that this company be investigated regarding this problem to determine why these problems exist. in the case of my sc2, saturn (initially) refused to pay for the replacement stating that it was not covered under their extended warranty. it was only after i told them that had i purchased directly from ac delco the warranty would be honored and that they -- in their contract with delco -- refused the warranty services delco offered. they apparently knew of the electrical problems with their vehicles and wanted to fleece customers rather than pay delco extra for the warranty agreements. *nm

I have had my 2003 vue for about 1 1/2 years. in that time i have had an unexplainable rattle in the head liner, design flaw in the sunroof/moonroof, gas guage sensor replaced, thermostat replaced, slipping transmission, flame outs when trying to start the engine resulting in flooding, jumping to the right at acceleration from a stop, heat blowing out of the vents during the summer when the fan is shut off and temp is on cold, and this week a dazzling display of indicator lights and guages and dash lights randomly turning on and off with the eventual loss of power steering. and i thought my transmission issues with my tahoe were bad? we purchased the vue for our daughter to drive when she turns 16. i feel that this car will not be safe for her to drive. i am very concerned with stories i am hearing about the airbags failing, abs failing, steering failing. this could be fatal for an inexperienced driver.*ak

I have taken my 2003 saturn vue in 8 times for high idle (1000 rpm) in neutral, ses light on, and engine cooling fan going on. the dealer stopped attempting to fix the problem on visit 6 (when they let my car sit at the dealership for 13 days with 1 diagnosis attempt). another dealer has looked at the car for the last two visits. saturn says they cannot find anything wrong. yet i have found a saturn service bulletin on the nhtsa website. the high idle is a safety issue because it affects my shifting. an independent ase certified mechanic has stated that the high idle and engine fan running will eventually damage the fan, engine mounts and catalytic converter. of course, my gas mileage is compromised as well as my safety. the service bulletin pertains to the ses light, code p0171 fuel trim system lean. *ak

Saturn 2003 vue with vti transmission was purchased new in 10/02. at 76,000 miles when accelerating to get on highway, the rpm's were roaring and the speedometer was dropping. pulled on shoulder and was able to drive car at 30 mph a few miles to the saturn creve coeur dealer, who met us getting out of the car, and told us he could not even look at our car to go somewhere else! drove sides streets 30 mph to south county saturn dealer where purchased. after test driving they stated they thought the range switch was bad. no longer under extended warranty it would cost $452 to replace. after read about others complaints on this site, and having never heard of a range switch i am leary of spending the $452 only to have them tell me the next time it happens that the transmission will need to be replaced. recently had problems with ignition sticking when turning the key. they told me it was some switch then too and the next day it did the same thing. then i was told that i needed a whole new ignition after they held the key and ground it down! i do not trust them. car has not had a problems the past few days. i will never buy another saturn! *tr

Ignition switch/control locks when exiting the vehicle, and then is extremely difficult to unlock, while attempting to start the car .... vue is 4 years old, with 33,000 miles... vehicle has done this since the first day i owned it. complained to dealership a year ago, during routine maintenance check, and was told that i must be yanking the steering wheel to the left into lock position while getting out of the car! seriouly, if it was that difficult to turn the key in the ignition while starting it, do they think i would deliberately do this? ignition switch/control completely failed 8/7. had to called aaa twice for help; first time the tow truck driver banged on the key while it was in the ignition and it unlocked...said he sees this all of the time and that the control was probably going out. i called dealership and made an appt. to take it in, to be checked. second time, same day @10 pm....again aaa driver had to bang on the key, to get it unlocked...immediately drove it to the dealership and left it in their driveway to service in the morning. awaiting call on cost of repairs.. more than likely out of warranty now. my saturn l300 sedan, did the same thing .....traded it for the vue when my lease was up. a co-worker says his ion does it, and his daughter's older model l200 has always done this .... *tr

2003 saturn vue failed to start. *kb the vehicle made squeaking noises when the consumer made a right turn, in addition to various other rumblings. the consumer experienced problems with the rotors, bearings and transmission. a special wheel bearing had to be ordered as well as a special side cover and hardware for the transmission. the coolant switch was defective. the rear wipers would stick. the gas gauge would only read 3/4 full. the air condition stopped working and the hot and cold knob did not go all the to cool. the starter was replaced which was the reason the vehicle wasn't starting. the transfer case seal was replaced. *jb

Problems with transmission equipment on 2003 saturn vue.***no answer required***.*mr three weeks after the vehicle was purchased the consumer was notified of a transmission related recall on the vehicle. four months later the transmission failed without warning in traffic. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced (vti transmission). the manufacturer is aware of the problems with the vti transmission but instead of replacing the with a different type of transmission they extended the warranty. the starter and rear wiper motor was replaced. both fuel senders failed resulting in inaccurate fuel readings. the liftgate became stuck when opened. *nm

Upon pressing down fairly hard on my vehicle's horn it honked in a normal fashion and stopped upon when i removed my hand, but then it continued to honk on its own on an intermittent basis. at the same time, the service vehicle warning light went on. i was unable to stop this condition until the fuse was removed.
