Defect Summary | On certain trailers equipped with bendix ec-30t electronic control units (ecu). if the trailer-mounted abs warning lamp circuit experiences an electrical short and the short is not repaired, the high side power switch inside the ecu that controls the illumination of the trailer-mounted abs warning lamp may eventually become thermally stressed and experience an electrical short.
Consequence Summary | If the power switch shorts, it can result in an over-current condition in the ecu and lead to excessive heat, smoke, and possible fire.
Corrective Summary | Bendix will provide a remedy kit and detailed instructions and also provide a labor allowance for the repair. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact bendix at 1-800-478-1793 or strick at 1-215-949-3600.

Defect Summary | On certain trailers equipped with bendix sr-2, sr-4, and sr-5 trailer spring brake valve assemblies, the molded rubber face of the inlet/exhaust valve (i/e valve) component of the affected valves can separate from the valve's metal insert. air can be trapped by a separated i/e valve causing it to balloon and block the exhaust passage of the trailer spring brake circuit.
Consequence Summary | This condition can result in the affected vehicles being unable to apply the trailer parking/emergency spring brakes during parking in the event of a trailer supply line failure. unintended rollaway could occur, possibly resulting in personal injury or death to the vehicle occupant or any bystanders.
Corrective Summary | Bendix will notify customers and provide a repair kit and installation instructions free of charge. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact bendix at 440-329-9000 or strick at 704-436-2441.

PE03027 | STRICK CORPORATION | 06/30/2003 | 11/12/2003 | STRICK SEMI TRAILER HUB FAILURES
Odi opened this investigation based on a fleet complaint where information was furnished indicating that wheel bearings were failing at an unusually high rate.in 29 cases these failures allegedly resulted in a wheel end fire or a wheel separation.during the investigation it was determined that the subject vehicles were built with low maintenance wheel ends.documents obtained by odi indicate that widespread confusion existed in this industry concerning maintenance requirements.the issues were:frequency of maintenance, amount of grease to be used, and proper method of inspection.several meetings were held involving the axle manufacturer, (arvinmeritor), lubrication manufacturer (mobil), several trailer manufacturers and fleets.currently odi has data which indicates that 255 trailers from a certain build period have wheel ends failing at a higher rate than peer trailers with the same wheel ends.odi is upgrading this investigation to determine why the one group is failing at a higher rate than others with the same wheel ends.in order to resolve this matter, odi will be contacting the axle manufacturer, the bearing and grease manufacturers, fleets and will further investigate the issue with strick directly.

Tractor trailer veers left on highway. 1994 nissan strikes left side of 2001 strick trailer, underrides the trailer, severely compromising the occupant capsule. side underride injures at least 1900 people per year, killing at least 77 per year, likely much higher. a simple guard along the sides of trailers would prevent compromise of the occupant capsule in impacts at speeds otherwise survivable. the guard can be covered in such a manner that it improves the fuel efficiency, more than offsetting any loss of fuel efficiency due to extra weight, and saves more money than the cost of the guard itself. *tr |
