ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Annoying engine or drive train vibration between 1400 and 2000 rpm. more noticeable on upgrades. releasing accelerator pedal results in eliminating the vibration as the engine speed decreases. the vehicle is a 2004 toyota 4 runner v8 limited. this issue was initially noticed at about 700 miles on the odometer. *cb

Steering wheel and gas pedal high frequency vibration when accelerating at 1500 rpm to 1800rpm (in various speed). i had taken this concern to my local toyota dealer. the dealer service was good, but no solution provided. the reason was all 4 runner v8 4x4 do this, and there is no tsb solution for it. i have seen complains about this annoying vibration in '03 and '04 4runners in various place - edmunds.com, this site, and etc. should toyota consider this a defect of the vehicle and provide a solution?*ak

I just perchased a 2004 toyota 4 runner sport edition v8 in february. i have just completed the break-in period and have begun to increase my speed on the highway. a cyclical vibration and noise is noticed from the engine at 70 miles per hour that increases in frequency as vehicle speed is increased. the noise subsides once you let off the gas regardless of speed. in addition, steering wheel and brake pedal vibrates between 1500 and 2000 rpm range at various speeds. *ak

Strong sulfur smell (rotten eggs) when accelerating. can smell with all windows up. even worse if rear window is down. what's the point of having a rear window if you can't open it. i also own a 2000 4runner and it never smells this way. *nm

Almost constant sulpher smell. dealer states that they have no knowledge of problem, and no tsb's. they tell me to keep rear window closed. when my wife is a passenger she has her eyes burning all the time. if you need to step hard on the gas the whole cabin fills and is enough to make you noxious. toyota needs to remedy the problem asap, or a class action suit should be filed. this problem has soured me on toyota products for good. like the vehicle but have a hard time cinvicing my wife to go anywhere in it, she always wants to take her kia sorento, more comfort and nicer amenities. 2004 toyota 4-runner v-6 ltd 4x4 not acceptable unless you like sulphur smell while driving! *nm

Upon acceleration the exhaust emits a very strong rotten egg smell into the cabin of the vehicle. this especially happens when the rear window is lowered.

Leakage of sulfur dioxide (so2) fumes from exhaust into cabin of vehicle, smells like rotten eggs. exposure to so2 has adverse health effects, source epa. i suffer from asthma and the sulfur fumes create serious safety and health hazard.

In march of 2004, i purchased a 2004 limited 4runner (v6) from rodland toyota in everett, washington. i have had the vehicle in 3 times now for an obvious exhaust problems. the problem is that when driving the car the exhaust is entering the cabin of the vehicle even with the window is up. it is worse with them down. the dealership has told me each time that they do not smell it and have now idea what it could be. they did however give me a notification from toyota on my 3rd visit that toyota says it is the gas i am putting in it. i have tried all different types of gas from chevron to arco and everything in between and the smell does not go away. now that i have read all of the complaints from people on their 2003 4runners i am irate! all of the dealerships obviously know that this is a problem already and yet they continue selling the new 4runners! i just spent $39,000.00 on a suv that obviously has a serious problem!!!! it sounds like everyone with a 2003-2004 will have to take toyota to court to get their money back. something needs to be done about this now! i cannot believe that toyota is not owning up to an obvious design flaw!! if the vehicle is omitting hazardous carbon monoxide into the cabin it should be recalled immediately! people are breathing poisonous air coming from the vehicle and toyota does not think this is a problem. i noticed the exhaust smell right after leaving the dealership when i bought it and now 6 months later it is as strong as ever. i would advise anyone who wants to buy a 4runner to buy a different car all together. i traded in a 1998 4runner for this bad smelling piece of junk! i want a full refund and toyota can give it to me plus the interest i have been paying!!!!! do not buy one of these cars!!!! they are junk!!!!! *jb

 1. 2004 toyota 4runner purchased from fred anderson toyota, 9101 glenwood avenue, raleigh, nc,27622 on 3/18/2004. on 3/29, the service department installed an electrochrmic mirror that had been ordered at the time of purchase. 2. after that i noticed that the engine warning lights, the vsc trac and vsc off light came on in the dash. also noticed an ammonia smell. 3. i took the vehicle in 4 times for each problem, for a total of 6 times. the first time 4/15, the problem was diagnosed as the purge valve and it was replaced. the second time 4/29, the charcoal cannister was diganosed as the problem, but the part had to be ordered. the third time 5/6, , the charcoal cannister was replaced. the fourth time, 5/24, it was found that the electrochromic mirror was installed incorrectly. the lights have since gone off, but the ammonia smell still occurs intermittenlty during acceleration. i am currently in arbitration because toyota has been less than willing to cooperate with me. i'm also wondering what permanent damage has been caused to the vehicle. additionally i have also noticed a vibration in the steering and noted it at the last two visits to the service department. *mr

I have a 2004 toyota 4 runner. i noticed the extreme sulfur odor within the first 500 miles of driving the vehicle. i was told it was just a coating on the engine. naive as i am i believed them. i am at 20,000 miles and many complaints to toyota only to be told it was the gas. they have done the tsb but no avail. it is still there and not healthy. *nm

Purchased toyota 4 runner v8 sport edition in may 2004. after approximately 2,000 miles, the car began have almost constant sulfur emissions (heavy smell) within the car with windows either up or down, and with either fresh air or recirculated air. the odor is noxious and exacerbating health problems. dealership (conicelli) told me this smell was normal and unavoidable. tsb from toyota about this problem does not include the v8, but the problem is evident. *ak

When driving my 2004 toyota 4 runner emits a sulfur like odor. i have been told that switching fuels will help, but i have tried all fuels in the area of all grades and still have this terrible smell. it happens on a repeatable basis, most of the time after exiting the freeway onto a surface street is when it is most noticeable.
