Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2004 avalon vehicles; 2004 and 2005 camry, camry solara, highlander, and sienna vehicles, 2006 highlander hybrid; 2004 and 2005 lexus es330 and rx330; and 2006 lexus rx400h vehicles manufactured from june 1, 2004 through march 31, 2005, equipped with the 1mz-fe or 3mz-fe engine. the amount of adhesive agent applied between the outer ring and the torsional rubber damper (inner ring) in the crankshaft pulley may be inadequate. if the adhesive is insufficient, there is a possibility that the outer ring may become misaligned and it may not properly rotate with the inner ring, causing noise and/or illumination of the battery discharge indicator light.
Consequence SummaryIn some cases, the belt for the power steering pump may become detached from the pulley which could result in a loss of power steering and a sudden increase in steering effort, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryToyota will notify owners, and dealers will check the crankshaft pulley to identify whether it was produced by the u.s. supplier. if so, the dealer will replace the pulley with a new one at no charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during early january 2012. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

When driving on highway, there was some noise coming from the engine compartment, and suddenly i lost power steering and lights flashed on the front panel. i managed hard to pull off the vehicle from the highway, it was so hard make turns to the ramp. the engine temperature started to fluctuate. there was little smoking come out, i had to stop there. it was turned out there was a belt fell out and my alternator eventually died. my car is 4-cylinder, not 6.

My 2005 toyota camry is leaking coolant. i discovered there has been a long term problem with stripped engine bolts in toyotas, resulting in leaking coolant and the need to replace the engine block. this has happened in 2002-2006 camrys and highlanders causing widespread complaints but no action from toyota. they made a defective product and refuse to acknowledge it, putting the burden back on the consumer. it's time toyota stepped up and recalled these cars, made the fix and acknowledged their error.

My 2005 camry has 53000 on it, very well maintained. was driving 25 mph on a traverse when the engine suddenly died. i tried to restart the car without success. called a towing service, however, 10 minutes later i was able to start the car and drove home. the service engine light remained on. at first chance i drove my car to my local mechanic who told me it was the throttle body, but suggested to bring my car to the toyota dealer because he had seen so many of camry throttle malfunctions that he thought there might be a recall. i took his advice, bought it to the dealer who confirmed that my throttle body was bad and needed replacing. however he told me that he could not guarantee that the service engine light would not go off unless i had an engine flush and a full tune-up. this did not sit well with me, so i declined the services. i paid him $100 as a diagnostic fee. when he went to get my car, the engine would not turn on at all. i called a towing company who took it back to my mechanic. he replaced the throttle and reset the service light. the car is now running, but because of my mechanic's statement and many similar throttle complaints recorded on the internet, i strongly feel that the throttle issue should be investigated.

On 9/20/2009 at 5 pm i was traveling at a speed of 60 miles per hour north on us texas highway 121 and my 2005 toyota camry lost all power and the engine shut down. i was engaged in normal highway driving when this occurred. the car is well cared for and has 46,902 miles. approximately 3 seconds prior to power failure, the check engine light came on. otherwise, i had absolutely no indication that anything was wrong with the vehicle as it was operating normally. the power loss occurred just north of the alma road intersection and resulted in an extremely dangerous situation as the road was under construction, the road did not have a breakdown lane or shoulder, and the road had a high speed limit of 60 miles per hour. the complete loss in power meant i had no ability to power my car to a safe location; rather, i had to coast between traffic to an area of the road under construction. if traffic had been heavier, this could have easily resulted in a catastrophic, life threatening accident. the car was taken to a local toyota dealership where the dealer informed me i needed a new throttle body as my throttle body appeared to be rusted out. the car is kept inside a garage in the warm climate of dallas, texas so i'm not sure how the throttle body rusted out. furthermore, the car has had all suggested and required dealership maintenance items performed to it since i purchased it new. the total cost to repair the throttle body was $1,193.84 which i had to pay as it was not covered under warranty. *tr

I purchased the car in may with 48,000 miles from the lake charles, la toyota dealership. i currently have 58,000 miles and have taken excellent care of the vehicle. my wife and i were driving to wal-mart on the highway during rush hour when our car appeared to jump a few times without pressing on the acceleration. after commenting on the jumps i noticed no response from the pedal and realized that the car had died. luckily i made it into a parking lot where a mechanic was able to communicate with our cars computer. the diagnostic said it was our throttle body, and that we could make it home if we took it easy. during the 5 mile trip the car would surge between 1,500 and 3,000 rpms and would die at stop lights in the drive position. i learned to place the car in neutral and let it race until the light turned and then place in drive. the rest of the way home i kept the car in high rpms >3,500 to keep from feeling the surge. at home i researched this problem and found that i am not the first, and lucky that it did not cause an accident. other sites mentioned to get throttle body cleaner and a soft rag to wipe grime from throttle body. after doing so the car would idle at 200 rpm. after a few minutes i test drove and found that any mild acceleration would bog it down and kill it. then later it would idle at 2,500 rpms in drive and i would have to press very hard on the break to keep from moving forward. this car is very dangerous and could have easily hurt someone. *tr

Vehicle stalls in traffic and then suddenly the vehicle is okay. manufacturer states they are aware of this problem with these vehicles.*ak.....vehicle has a hesitation problem. on two different occasions consumer was placed in danger of crossing a bysy highway because the vehicle did not move...at all. the engine has a one minute delay between the tine the accelerator pedal is pressed to the time the rpms begin to go up. furthermore, when crossing an uncontrolled intersection on a highway with 55+ mph traffic the hesitation can land consumer's vehicle in the oncoming lane too late. the lunge that akes place when vehicle finally does accelerate, is a very jerky and unsafe ride. *ak

Toyota camry le model has three problems: idle control is above 2400, rod that hold piston is not secure to hold it tight and causing the piston to jiggle around, toyota said that is a defective part and should replace the engine. and weather seal is inadaquate, you can hear all traffice noise with radio on full volume. dealer is very unfriendly and they gave me run around, they replaced the engine without my permission and still has same problems i had before they replace the engine and has not fix the other problems and refuses to give anyone else's name to talk to. 800# tells me to call dealer and dealer tells me to call 800# and still unable to resolve this issue. i will never buy toyota or recommend to anyone. becouse of the poor service when you have problem they do not want to talk to you and they give you run around.*ak
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM
02/10/2010900001
I own a 2005 toyota camry and since i bought it from the dealer it had been having problems with the automatic transmission system and the accelerator . for example when i stop at a traffic light and i begin to accelerate the car takes to long to shift to the next gear and while this time elapses for about 2 to 4 seconds the car keeps accelerating with no gear at all, this almost make me crash the other day trying to avoid a collision with an aggressive driver that got in my way and i could not advance with the car at that crucial moment and get out of the way of the situation since the gear was not ready for me to accelerate and advance . another problem that i have been noticing is that while at low to medium speeds the abs braking system fails to brake the car after it gets over a bump in the road; several times it had happened to me that after i get a bump i have to apply the brakes 2 to 3 times in a rapid succession to come to a complete stop. also sometimes while driving at low speeds with low rpms the car stalls without warning and the wheel gets very hard to maneuver ,i even have to stop the car in the middle of the road to start the engine again and continue with my trip. all this complaint was given to toyota in priors calls i made to them but the dealers they send me to see said that was normal operation of the car ,that there was nothing wrong. *tr

On 2/20/2010, i drove my 2005 toyota camry (le) at 70 mph along west-bond i-630 of little rock, suddenly, the engine warning light was on and the engine was cut off and all warning lights were on. the car had no power for stirring and braking. fortunately, it was in the morning of saturday with little traffic on the freeway. i managed to shift from the very left lane to cross two more lanes to pull off about a half mile of distance. the car was in lander's toyota shop for 3 days. i was told the throttle is malfunction and unable to provide correct air/gas to the engine. it ended up with i paid ~$1100 on parts and labs to fix the problem. this sounds like the cases of the throttle problems amount 1996 camries. are the throttles the same? *tr

I was on my way to work when i noticed smoke coming from the hood of my car. luckily, i was able to pull over on the service road to the major highway i was about to get on. upon getting out of my car and opening the hood i was faced with flames. concerned about my safety as well as the safety of passers-by, my first reaction was to try to put out this fire. i ran to my trunk, where i always keep a case of bottled water, and took approximately 8 water bottles. i was able to extinguish the fire. i am certain that, had i not been able to pull safely off the road or did not have the clear mind to try to extinguish the fire, the car would've been engulfed in flames and totaled causing serious injury to me and potentially those close to the incident. the car was towed to the nearest dealership. i am told that there is severe damage but do not have all of the details yet. *nm

When i went to the dealership to buy this car they told me that the total cost for the car would be around sixteen thousand. however the real total was around thirty thousand dollars. when i notice it was too late i had already sign. at that moment i tried to fix that problem with the dealership but they completely ignore me. and just to make things worst the car doesn't function right; out of no where it just turns off. i don't know what to do the dealership does not want to cooperate. i want to cancel the purchase of this car. *nm

Dt: 2005 toyota camry. the vehicle has a very pronounced vibration on the engine which is transmitted to the steering wheel. there has been a technician to inspect the vehicle. he stated he would speak to the factory about it. the contact has never heard back from toyota of puerto rico. the contact did call toyota of north america told him to get in contact with toyota of puerto rico. the vibration happens when the motor is hot; it has to go down to the minimum rpms, 750. when the vehicle is in drive and hot, he states he can feel the vibration. at 900 rpms, the vehicle does not shake. he then asked if they could adjust the rpms, but the dealership stated they could not reprogram the computer. the consumer stated there was a device toyota has installed in the six cylinder camry's to reduce vibration. this is called the active engine control mount.*ak updated 11/15/2005 - the vibration was also noticed when the vehicle was in reverse or when the a/c was on. the vehicle has been inspected a total of five times. *nm (11/29/05) *sc

Purchased a 2005 camry se in feb. 2005. had 500 miles on the car and it needed a complete overhaul due to defective parts from the company. i now have a new car that has diminished value due to the overhaul. i was also without the car for 20 plus days. i feel they knew the motor was defective when they sold it to me but i guess they some 70 year old would not know the difference. i believe i should at the least have been given a new engine or another new car without the defective engine. i guess that would be too much to expect from the reliable automaker. *nm
