Car stopped to allow garage gate to raise/open at which time the car, which was initially in park, was put in drive with foot on brake - car then went completely out of control at a significant speed crashing into a cement pillar which is what stopped the car - the pillar. the airbags were deployed, the car was totaled as designated by the insurance company.an attempt was made to stop the car with the emergency brake to no avail. injuries of 3 passengers are very significant - 8 broken ribs of one passenger, 2 broken legs and removal of spleen to another passenger and the driver suffered a compound fracture of ankle. recovery and rehabilitation are still pending and one passenger may not recover.

 1. we purchased a new 2004 toyota camry xle from beaverton toyota (beaverton, oregon) 2. here are the three problems: a. when going down a hill, on dry pavement, with the brakes being feathered, with no additional foot pedal pressure, the brakes suddenly engage and the brake pedal pushes back on the drivers foot. b. after braking and then accelerating, the brakes do not release after the brake pedal has been released. this causes the engine to hesitate until the brakes release. this happens especially in heavy stop and go traffic. c. with very little pressure on the accelerator, the engine hesitates which causes the transmission to downshift multiple times running the rpms up to the redline. 3. i have reported these problems to beaverton toyota service department multiple times and the hillsboro (oregon) toyota service department one time. they admit there are problems, but since toyota has not issued a service bulletin they can do nothing to fix the problems. i have driven another 2004 camry at the hillsboro toyota dealership and none of the problems listed above occurred.

On 6/25/08 i stepped on the brake because there was traffic up ahead but the car didn't slow down and kept on going. i stepped on the brake harder and found that i had to hold it all the way down to just slow down. i nearly hit some cars trying to gain control of the brakes on this car. then being very concerned i drove home slowly only using the gas pedal and slowing completely at an intersection in order to get home safely. the next day i brought the car into the toyota dealer in torrington ct to find out what was wrong with it. they said the master cylinder was defective and needed replacement at a cost of $576.22. my car had 67,266 miles at that time. it was fixed and has been running fine since then. i checked car complaints.com and found others had a similar problem. i found this incident rather unusual because i have owned three toyotas so far and never had any problems. i am posting this complaint because this defective master cylinder could have caused some very serious consequences for me and others and should be investigated further if others are also having similar problems. i doubt is the old defective cylinder is available. *tr

The day the car caught fire, owner was driving the car on the freeway, owner exited freeway, drove several blocks, turned right then the car stalled; owner steered the car to the side of the road using the momentum left in the vehicle. owner heard pedestrians screaming to exit the car. owner saw smoke coming out of the left side of the car. owner grabbed her purse and exited the car in a hurry, leaving the car key in the ignition. as soon as owner exited the car, the car's door locks locked themselves, owner heard the clicking noise of the door locks. then there was an explosion, and there was fire coming out from the left side underneath the front of the car. owner screamed for help, then went looking for a fire extinguisher, but could not find any. the car kept on burning for 20 minutes until the fire truck arrived, firemen extinguished the fire, but the car's doors were all locked, the firemen broke the windshield and side windows to have access to the inside of the car to completely extinguish the flames. the car was declared total loss and was towed away. we the owners of this toyota camry 2005 have recuperated the towed vehicle. we communicated to toyota the situation with the car. they answered saying: there was no recall for that vehicle and therefore would not do anything about it. the car showed electrical problems, jerked sporadically, turned off while running on the road. the car would restart on its own, sometimes it would have to be restarted manually. the car showed intermittent electrical problem, problem with the abs braking system. actually since we bought the actually since we bought the car brand new, the dealership said that this was normal behavior with the toyota abs system, and dismissed it as normal, they said that the corporate had informed them to say exactly that; this was a normal behavior with the toyota abs braking system. we the owner are following the events of toyota recalls, and specially news of defects kept away from public. *tr

2005 toyota camry. when applying the brakes on rough pavement (railroad tracks, potholes, large bumps) the brakes seem to release or let go. i have complained to the dealership about this shortly after getting the car. they tried to tell me that it was the antilock brakes and that i wasn't used to driving with them. i have complained to the dealership one other time and they cleaned and adjusted my brakes and charged me. the car still has this issue which sounds a lot like the ones that the recent model prius cars are having. *tr

We purchased a 2005 toyota camry in 2005. the first day i drove it the car hesitated on acceleration to change lanes it was lucky that it didn't cause a wreck. i took the car back to the dealership (i don't remember why) but i asked them to check it and the guy i talked to just said it was because of the fuel injection. the guy didn't offer to check it, he just made that statement. the hesitation happens any time and it always feels like someone is going to rear end us while the car is deciding what it wants to do. on the freeways in california people go 70 miles an hour that makes it a hazard to drive a toyota on the freeway. the toyota also has a mind of its own, sometimes when i have my foot on the brake preparing to stop the engine seems to be trying to override the brake to keep going. it feels like the car is trying to increase the speed when i am trying to slow down. i have been concerned about it but i just figured toyota was not going to do anything about it. now my husband does not want me to drive the toyota. *tr

On sunday september 3, 2006 i pulled into a parking space at kroger grocery store after church to shop about 10:30 or 11:00 am. as i pulled into the space to park my 2005 toyota camry, it did a sudden acceleration, jump the curb and crashed into the grocery store wall. the store wall was not damaged but my camry had about $4000.00 worth damage. when i told toyota what had happen i was told to contact toyota regional office. i contacted them and they told me that someone would be out to investigate my claim. they kept my vehicle for over three weeks, then they started on the body repair. toyota claimed they could not substantiate my claim of sudden acceleration, but i know they repaired my vehicle internally as well as the body work because when i picked my car up from joseph toyota dealership the car acceleration pedal felt so different. it felt real stiff and hard to mash. the brakes were check and fixed, because during the sudden acceleration they fail to stop the car. as i press them the seat belt choked an strap me so tight that i had a large welt across my chest. toyota knew they had a problem with sudden acceleration at least since i reported it in 2006. they lied and made my insurance company pay all of that money, i had to struggle to come up with all of my deductible, pay for 4 weeks of car rental of about $45.00 a day while toyota regional office drug their feet about investigating my car. i was scare, sore and frustrated about how this whole thing was handle, but now i feel vindicated. had toyota regional office told the truth about the problem with my camry and did the recall in 2006 when i reported this, they could have save a lot injuries and lives. i knew i couldn't go up against this big corporation by my self and i'm sorry people have loss their lives got injured, but glad it came out to the consumers. i feel toyota also changed my accelerator pedal in 2006, or put that little steel chip in back of the pedal, the new 2010 fix. my car has loss value. *tr

Car located in omaha, ne, being driven east from 42nd and curtis avenue, downhill at approximately 41st and curtis ave (car speed up on level area to compensate for the computer systems ability to slow the car down or prevent coasting), my 2005 toyota se hit a parked car, airbags deployed and the car continued to drive an additional block after the brakes were applied. car hit a dirt road/ditch and bounced and landed into a private yard located on the southeast side of the road. the hill in the private yard stopped the car from continuing on. *tr

I had an accident on the 22nd of january, 2010. when i exited the freeway, i tried to use the brake, but the car would not stop. it went faster and hit a tree. my car was damaged. another thing is that i noticed that my rear speaker covers were cracked on both sides. a close look shows that the cover has disintegrated and become weak. when you touch it, it crumbles into little pieces. this is a very unusual thing; i have never experience this in other cars before. i don't know what the exact problem is. i think that toyota should be responsible for this. my car is a 2005 toyota camry le model. *tr

I am an owner of a 2005 toyota camry. i purchased my car brand new. the first winter snow fall, while driving i experienced a hesitation with my brakes. i contacted the dealer, and was informed the brakes were fine. this continuously happens when the road conditions are slippery and wet. in chicago, we received approx. 10 in. of snow and as recent as today, my car almost did not stop! i almost ran into the back of another car and i nearly had an accident. the brakes sort of throttled with hesitation. i am concern that my toyota is not one that is being recalled, however, it should be! *tr

I have had over 20 braking incidents with my 2005 toyota camry. all between the speeds of 10 to 40 mph. everytime i go to apply the brake, the car will accelerate, and feels like the brakes aren't catching or something. especially when on a poorly paved road. i have now been involved in 2 separate rear-end collisions where i could not stop and ended ramming the vehicle in front of me. a third time i was able to swerve, and clipped a metal sign. i bought the car as a toyota certified pre-owned with 29 k miles on it, in october 2006. i began encountering this braking problem after only having the car a week. the dealer said there was nothing wrong. so i bought all new brake pads even though the others were practically new. didn't help. had the brake lines bled again, and the rotors resurfaced. didn't help. i feel there is something seriously wrong with these vehicles, and someone is going to get hurt. this braking problem has already cost me over 2,000 in repairs and property damage. yet still i make my $450 a month payment, with no word from toyota on what they are going to do to fix the problem. *tr

Toyota camry 2005 lx. brake failure occurs when braking on slightly uneven surface while depressing brakes on a small bump or pothole. the brakes make a grinding noise and do not work for a few seconds. after the surface is even the brakes work fine. this is not simply the abs. for safety reason i must use emergency 'hand brake' to prevent major accidents while on uneven surfaces. i have managed to avoid accidents by using the handbrake or braking way ahead of time when i see an uneven spot in front of me. have accidents have been reported with this problem on other same model year cars? for me this occurs regularly while on uneven surfaces since i purchased the car. has there been a recall by toyota regarding the issue i described? *tr

I got a car accident in 12/18/2009. i rented a nissan car when my toyota camry was in auto shop. when i was driving the nissan i felt the brake system was so different between my car and the nissan car. then i talked with my friend who also has a toyota camry le 2005. he told me the same thing that i do everyday regarding how to push the brake pedal. as long as the speed is over 10 miles, when i push the brake pedal and try to stop my car, the car neither stops nor speeds down, the car rather speeds up (accelerates) first, then speeds down. the brake system makes me always stay away certain distance from the car in front of me and get alarmed by the drivers who were behind of me. the nissan car stopped immediately when i pushed the brake pedal. i took my car to the dealer to try to tell them the brake problem, no body wanted to talk with me and they let me go. *tr

About 3 years ago, i experienced a sudden acceleration in my 2005 toyota camry v6. it was an unusually rainy day in southern arizona. as i exited a freeway off-ramp to come to a stop, it felt like the abs system took over the braking. my foot was on the brake pedal, but the car braked, then accelerated rapidly, fishtailing a bit on the wet pavement. i pumped the brake pedal and was able to stop a few feet past the stop sign. luckily, there were no other cars on the rural road where i exited--the front part of my car was past the stop sign and out in the road for perpendicular traffic. i was perplexed by the short burst of acceleration, but attributed it to the advanced braking system. i had never had that take control before. maybe this info can help in your current investigation of the sudden acceleration in toyota camrys. this was the only time i experienced the acceleration. the car has been in for routine maintenance. i asked my mechanic to check the brakes since the pedal seems to be soft--it goes down a bit before engaging the brakes. mechanic finds no problems with brakes. *tr

2005 toyota camry xle--beginning in march 2007 my camry began to accelerate from a stopped position. my camry would take off at high speeds from a complete stop and applying the gas pedal. this occurred several times. i took my car to my dealer bill page toyota in falls church, va. the first time the acceleration occurred was after 2 years and in march 2007. i was on constitution avenue, right lane in dc--which either turns right or goes straight. constitution avenue is 3 or 4 lanes each east and westbound--i was heading eastbound. when the light turned green, the car in front of me turned right, thank goodness because as i took my foot off the brake and unto the gas, my car shot forward so fast my brakes wouldn't stop my car. upon slamming on the brakes which were shuddering so badly, i thought my car was never going to stop and hit the next car (rush hour). i stopped short of hitting that car. i was so scared. my service manager said couldn't reproduce and that there was nothing wrong with my brakes or car. he told me that the shuttering is normal when i slam on my brakes--a safety feature to stop the car. computer said nothing wrong. had the acceleration problem at least 3 more times. i was at a parking meter, 1st space. got into my car, turned on the key, released my emergency brake, and took my foot off the brake and unto the gas. i wanted to make a right turn. there were 2 people on the sidewalk, and thankfully they did not walk in front of my car--i would have run over them. my car took off so fast from a stopped position that i had a hard time stopping my car. i immediately took my 2005 camry to the dealer. again service manager told me computer says there is nothing wrong with my car--think computer/software glitch. last week toyota corp said won't fix b/c not on recall and only intermittent, which is the problem. told me i own the car, it's out of warranty won't pay to fix. help! when driving it's like russian roulette! *tr

I own a 2005 toyota camry and since i bought it from the dealer it had been having problems with the automatic transmission system and the accelerator . for example when i stop at a traffic light and i begin to accelerate the car takes to long to shift to the next gear and while this time elapses for about 2 to 4 seconds the car keeps accelerating with no gear at all, this almost make me crash the other day trying to avoid a collision with an aggressive driver that got in my way and i could not advance with the car at that crucial moment and get out of the way of the situation since the gear was not ready for me to accelerate and advance . another problem that i have been noticing is that while at low to medium speeds the abs braking system fails to brake the car after it gets over a bump in the road; several times it had happened to me that after i get a bump i have to apply the brakes 2 to 3 times in a rapid succession to come to a complete stop. also sometimes while driving at low speeds with low rpms the car stalls without warning and the wheel gets very hard to maneuver ,i even have to stop the car in the middle of the road to start the engine again and continue with my trip. all this complaint was given to toyota in priors calls i made to them but the dealers they send me to see said that was normal operation of the car ,that there was nothing wrong. *tr

I'm concerned the toyota braking issues go deeper than late model prius. my 2005 camry le v6 exhibits similar characteristics as being described today - brake failure when driving over uneven, irregular or rough pavement. when this occurs, the brake pedal stiffens and braking action ceases. i've learned to press down v-e-r-y hard on the pedal during this intermittent behavior. had taken to the dealer more than once. the complaint along with harsh shifting of the transmission which manifests in the engine over-revving while not actually engaging into any gear, then the transmission finally engages making the vehicle go further/faster than desired/anticipated. toyota indicated the issues were an operational characteristic of the vehicle, being dismissive in their response demonstrating a corporate culture of arrogance. have spoken with toyota service managers in henderson, nv, santa monica and thousand oaks, ca re: the transmission and they all have similar responses... rolling their eyes toward the sky and lamenting, ohhh, that v6 camry transmission as if some sort of factory 'inside joke'. these are clearly known issues the factory has chosen to do nothing about, thus the service manager's hands are tied. (had been extremely pleased with my former '95 camry to the tune of 300,000 miles.) it's disappointing toyota has ceased to be the honorable company they once were. *cn

It had started to snow with about an inch or less on ground. since my street is on an incline and being aware of possible slippery conditions i was driving less than 10mph as i approached my driveway. i was just creeping along. as soon as i applied the brakes to get ready to pull into my driveway(very cautiously) they just didn't work and i slid slowly down the rest of the street (appr. 200 ft) into the cross road, which thankfully had no cars approaching, and i rolled right into a tree. because i was going so slow there was no damage to my car except for dented license plate nor was i injured, just shaken up. i was alarmed by the total lack of brake control that i experienced. when i called the dealership the service rep said that was the way the anti-lock brakes work and that i should have snow tires for winter driving. i have lived on this street for several years. when i had my honda accord before the camry i never felt frightened that it would not stop in the snow. i'm a very careful driver. i've always felt confident driving in snowy conditions and have never owned a 4-wheel drive car. this didn't feel normal to me even though it could have been that i was on my street at just the perfect moment during a snowstorm when the streets had accumulated just enough snow to be hazardess. now, as i am reading all these problems with toyota i'm reminded again of my discomfort in regard to my brakes and am wondering again if this is something that needs remedying. in addition to this particular incident i have also expeienced great discomfort due to lack of break control when i brake over bumps or, again, on an incline in normal weather conditions. it sounds very much like what i've been reading about the latest prius problems. i have told myself often that i would definitely not buy another toyota. my feeling that i can't trust the braking system on my camry is being confirmed by what i've been reading in the news. *cn

In july 2008 i was pulling my 2005 toyota camry into a parking spot and hit a steel fence (which prevented me from hitting a brick wall). i reported to geico that my brakes failed. a witness said that my foot probably slipped off the brake, because my tires were spinning and there was the smell of burnt rubber. i looked down through the steering wheel and my foot was on the brake. the brakes were fine. i believe my car (which i rarely drive anymore out of fear) should be included in the recall and should be repaired. i reported this to toyota customer service, but all they could do was file the report. there must be other 2005 camrys affected. this is my 3rd and last toyota. *tr

I had the same exact problem that i'm reading about in the toyota prius (brief brake failure at slow speeds on wet or uneven surfaces) in a 2005 camry. i brought it to the dealer, who would not acknowledge the problem, telling me that the brakes conformed to standards. so i don't believe any talk from toyota that the problem is some kind of design flaw limited to the prius. *tr

We are writing to express our discomfort and disappointment with our 2005 camry. this is the third camry that we have owned, and until now, we have been exceptionally pleased with all of them from the style, the performance, as well as the maintenance. on december 23, 2009, while attempting to park, the car lurched forward, accelerated, hit a parked vehicle, and upon my (lillie) trying to apply the brakes, the pedal went all the way to the floor, and thus the brakes did not catch. i managed to maneuver the car to an empty lot and bring it to a stop. there were two other people in the car with me including a child. i was distraught. of course, damage was done to both vehicles. when my husband arrived, he tried the brakes, and they did not catch. after reporting this incident to the insurance company, we called the local toyota dealer to tow it in to be checked. the brakes were tested, and according to the mechanical department, there was no problem found at this time. unfortunately, this was not the first accident with the brakes failing. shortly after purchasing the car in august of 2005, and again attempting to park, the vehicle lurched forward and went through the wall of a local restaurant. fortunately, the restaurant was closed, and no one was injured, however, extensive damage was done to both the car and the restaurant. i was sure the brakes failed, but thinking this was probably unusual, i convinced myself that perhaps since the car was new, i was not quite accustomed to the performance of the brakes. it was not until this happened again, that i knew the brakes had certainly failed. these were two frightening, expensive experiences. the first one was reported to the police. both were reported to our insurance. *tr james & lillie wilson

The car brakes are soft and hard to stop the car on road conditions. wet, snow, ice, or any other substance other than dry the brakes go to the floor and grate. standing on brake to the floor still doesn't stop the car. i told this to the car lot and they told me that they are all like that. i have had several close calls and had to go up onto grass or other area to stop my car. the grating sound when on wet conditions is awful and still doesn't control the stop. new design or different brakes need to be put on these cars. it doesn't seem safe to not be able to stop. *tr

Brakes are soft, grinding down in one day. i've had to replace them twice since i purchased car in 2005. i have to push brake to the floor before car will stop. also car surges. i'll be driving and the car will all of a sudden go forward. toyota said it was due to brakes. has the brake system been recalled.? i noticed a lot of complaints on line due to same problems. *jb

If i had been driving any of my other vehicles besides the 2005 toyota camry that i have owned for 4 months, i would not have crashed into the bumper of the stopped truck. i saw the truck in time to apply the brakes while moving at 15 miles per hour,on dry clean pavement, to stop before hitting the rear end of the truck when it was a good 20 feet away. not only did my toyota not stop when i smashed on the brakes, it left absolutely no skid marks, and managed to completely rip the grille and headlights off the front bumper, and curl the hood back over a foot. the force did not deploy the airbag, and only caused minor damage to the bumper of the truck. the brakes absolutely were at fault, and i regret having to find out in such an expensive way that the brakes are not dependable at all, especially for a car with only 28,000 miles on the odometer. toyota should pay for the damages if the same problem exists for any other drivers. *nm

Brakes are slow and difficult to engage; produce long stops or none. toyota says brakes are functioning as they're designed to (which means brakes are designed to be unsatisfactory) and does nothing; arbitration hearing found in favor of toyota, despite consumer reports (2005) finding that brakes were spongy and stops long. i'm not sure why this is the case but suspect drum type brake not adequate for car of this weight; however, the whole system may be at fault. the consumer was told the performance of the brakes was due to a device called a double or dual link pedal assembly that will soon be required in all new vehicles. *jb

On a clear day the morning of june 14, 2005, i was driving south in the slow lane of highway 95 in florida. all of a sudden i heard the driver in the middle lane blow his horn. at this moment i felt that the car was dragging me on one side to the left. i tried to stop the car by pressing on the brakes. the brakes were non existent and the car kept going left, hit a pick up truck in the middle lane (truck turned upside down, driver on the pavement); passed the fast lane and through the median; finally got stuck in the mud (thank god it rained the night before) near the northbound lane. my car was towed to the nearest dealer with $4,000 worth of damages. my insurance has to replace the other driver's car. both drivers were injured in the crash.

Whenever i applied the brake pedal at low speeds between 1-30 mph as approaching an intersection, a stop sign or an immediate brake the transmission switches gears, and the rpms increased. the brake pedal depressed all the way to the floor and the car jolted forward, and did not stop until the brakes were applied again. fortunately, i have not had an accident. others have. i have had the defective brake problem since i bought the car new in 2004. i had the dealer's repair technicians drive the car on multiple occasions, they said they were not able to recreate the problem. this was not how anti-lock brakes were supposed to work. toyota needed to research this defect thoroughly and announce a recall before others get hurt or killed.*ak

My car accerated when the brake went down almost to the floor. i have noted that prior to this there was an accident in the la area. in that accident there where people injured. last week there was an accident involving the same type and year car and there was one death in this one. what happened to me as i was pulling into a parking space i applied the brake and the brake went down and my edge of my shoe caught the accelerator pedal and my car went part way on the curb. had there been a car in front of me i would have hit it. i took my car to toyota and they checked it out and said it was ok. i now try to watch out for any brake problems but this a worrie to me and my wife.

Dt*: the contact stated that while braking from a speed of 25 mph, there has been a moment of resistance in the brake pedal, then the pedal depresses to the floor. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, where the problem was determined to be a normal occurrence with antilock brake systems in the newer models.

Intermittently, after coming to a complete stop, the brake pedal will sink completely to the floor after a few seconds. this has been occurring since i bought the car brand new. once the car reached about 5000 miles, it would come to a complete stop, then lunge forward several feet, stop, make a moaning sound, then lunge forward again; all while my foot was still on the brake. i did not notice any fault lights come on my dashboard. it then drove fine for about 10 miles when the same pattern repeated itself again, exactly the same way. i took it to the dealer and they cannot find anything wrong with it, or repeat the problem. they would like me to return when the problem repeats itself. of course, i?m hesitant to do this since the next time someone may get seriously injured. please help! *jb
