I was easing into a parking space in front of a bank and was nearly stopped when my car suddenly surged forward. with a full plate glass window in front of me, i wrenched the steering wheel as fast and as far to the right as possible and don't know how i missed the concrete pillar i then saw immediately in front of me. the next thing i knew i was in the driveway i had just used to enter the parking lot in front of the bank.i then pulled back into the parking space i had just left and got out to figure out what had happened and to see if i had caused any damage. the only real damage was a light on the lawn i had evidently knocked loose from its base and tire tracks in the grass. the only damage to my car was underneath where a screw holding some plastic parts together was lost. i am afraid to drive my car because if this happens again, i may not be so lucky; people may get killed and property may be badly damaged. *tr

I have late toyota camry v6 with the similar to case #10348638 problems - a sluggish accelerator response though not related to stops. i noticed is on the second day after i bought a new car, brought it to a dealership service dept, was told that a computer needs to adjust to my way of driving. brought it again after a couple of years, no problem found. it does not happen all the time, but almost every day. i found it very annoying and dangerous when it happens.

2006 camry xle i-4 transmission fluid changed at 30k miles came out black!! this means the fluid is being burned. car not abused. driven in 3rd & 2nd on two days 25 days apart down road to yosemite brake used to keep speed down. only time i can think of that added stress to transmission. another time i had to step/floor accelerator on freeway on-ramp up grade to keep fast moving semi-truck from running me over. this is normal operation. transmission failure at these time could be very dangerous. *tw

4 cylinder automatic transmission console shifter mechanism is supposed to lock when placed into park. safety lock should not release shifter from park unless the key is in the ignition, and the brake pedal and release button on shifter are both depressed. on my car, the shifter will come out of park just by moving it, whether or not the key is in the ignition, and whether or not the brake pedal and/or the release button are depressed. i pulled off the trim cover over the mechanism and found that the white plastic part that rotates over the lock pin had over-rotated so that the lock pin missed its entry into the slot. i returned it to its original position and the mechanism appeared to function properly again. however, about a week later the problem has re-occurred so i think it will require new parts. obvious safety issue: transmission can be knocked out of park at any time. *tr

2006 toyota camry was taken to (jack taylor alexandria) dealership to find why car was not shifting gears in automatic. was informed by service rep that the car needed to have the transmission replaced transmission oil had not been replaced and was black thus it had caused the transmission to be burned and it was going to cost $5336 to replace with new transmission. this car has had all regular service completed on the vehicle by toyota dealerships owner has all the records. contacted toyota customer experience (nader basta) 800-331-4331 and was told i need to contact the liaison at the dealership to see what they could do. spoke with susan danfora (703 684-0700) she stated the best they could was to offer 10% discount off of $5,336 =$500 (which was a service coupon deal to all customers via mail brochure) i attempted to contact contacted toyota customer experience (nader basta) 800-331-4331 however once again was referred back to the robert bell (703 684-0700) the service manager at jack taylor toyota alexandria to no avail. *tr

I have a 2006 toyota camery v6 and it has major transmission problems. the transmission doesn't properly change gears. the car drives slower than a car with a v4 engine. it seems to stall for a few seconds when attempting to change gears. i've taken it the dealer 4 times. currently this car only has 12,000 miles and the dealer changed the transmission once. when i came back again and again with the same complaint the dealer claims that the car is operating as designed. i've gone into arbitration with toyota and they claim that there's nothing wrong with this car. *tr

06/07 camry v6 and 07 avalon have a 1 second delay or longer on acceleration. i feel this delay is very dangerous. this occurs at any speed and is dangerous because you press on accelerator farther down than required because of the delay and the car lurches forward after the delay. my dealer says all 5 speed auto transmission cars for toyota have this delay and they cannot fix it. my dealer is not disclosing this to customers but will gladly address this if asked. my dealer has agreed to replace my 06 camry with an 07 because i feel the 80 hp more on the 07 and more air bags are better than the 06. the delay is also on the 07 camry v6. *nm

2006 camry problem 1: -- symptom: when filling up the tank and setting the gas pump handle to automatically fill the tank, (i.e., setting the switch on the handle), cannot be done (the pump switch pops). (this problem repeated at multiple different stations over several consecutive fill-ups.) after a diagnostic, the dealer said the canister needs to be replaced. another gas station attendant said this was a common problem on many late model camrys (his station is down the block from a dealer so he says he has seen a few of these), caused when the tank is overfilled and flooding gas into the canister, ruining it, and ultimately causing the fill-up problems described above. its scheduled to be fixed tomorrow, but wondering if this is a design/product defect, that will reoccur in the future (esp after the warranty ends.) please do not advise to not overfill the tank, for 2 reasons: 1) i live in nj, where only station attendants are legally allowed to fill the tank, so i have little/no control over it. 2) this should not ever be a problem, in general, even if the tank is overfilled and gas gushes onto the ground. problem 2: windshield constantly fogs up; need to use defroster in all types of weather, esp raining. i had this problem on my 84 corolla; big pain. problem 3: somewhat jerky ride, noticed when coasting to a stop, at approx 5-15 mph, then the traffic light turns green, and start to press the gas, the car jerks and lunges; seems to me that its trying to find the right gear, then it does, and this happens. thought the problem was me, but other drivers of my car noticed the same thing. dealer said that the car is programmed to adjust to the driver's habits (computers!!), and may be confused when drivers change, exhibiting this problem. *jb

A coin was easily lodged between the plastic covering of the shifter and the console. the coin easily worked its way down into the shifter mechanism. the plastic covering came out of its track and began to buckle. the buckling of the plastic covering led to inability to shift gears easily and timely. eventually, the buckling became so intense, the plastic covering independently shifted the gears from drive to neutral twice while on the interstate. to be able to drive the car and shift gears without constant undo pressure from the buckling plastic cover, the driver would need to pull the plastic covering out completely, exposing the shifting mechanism to other objects and liquids---the plastic covering sits immediately in front of the drink holders. i reported the problem to toyota. at the local and national level, toyota does not view this as a safety issue. *tr

My 2006 toyota camry se is experiencing throttle & shift lag. i've tried merging into traffic only to have my vehicle not respond. the crazy revving from the vehicle not shifting correctly is also causing a substantial decrease in fuel economy (from 24 mpg to 18 mpg). toyota has no fix at this time. *nm
