On september 26, 2007, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that some of its model year (my) 2007 and 2008 lexus e350 and toyota camry vehicles could experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the optional all weather floor mat offered on those vehicles and the vehicles' accelerator pedal.this decision was influenced by an office of defects investigation (odi) engineering analysis.this recall was designated 07e082.two years later, on october 5, 2009, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that a number of its my 2004-2009 lexus and toyota vehicles may also experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver's floor mat.this recall was designated 09v388.several months later, on january 27, 2010, toyota filed an amended, or supplemental, defect information report and expanded the population of vehicles to include additional my 2008-2010 toyota and lexus vehicles.since this expansiontook place in a different calendar year, this recall was designated 10v023.separately on january 21, 2010, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that certain toyota vehicles and certain pontiac vibe vehicles contained a safety defect in the accelerator pedal assembly that may cause the accelerator pedal to become harder to depress, slower to return, or in the worse case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position.nhtsa designated this recall 10v017.in total, the four recalls cover over 7.6 million toyota and lexus vehicles as well as the pontiac vibe product made by new united motor manufacturing, inc., a venture of toyota and general motors corporation.nhtsa requires additional information from toyota to more fully understand and evaluate, among other things, whether the scope of the recalls identified above (makes, models and model years) is sufficiently broad.the agency is seeking to determine whether toyota viewed the underlying defects too narrowly as interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver

I have a 2007 toyota camry that has intermittent instrument cluster problems. the speedometer and tachometer will cease to indicate proper readings and drop to zero. the tachometer will then bounce between zero and what i can only assume is a close approximation of the actual engine rpm. at the same time, the abs and parking brake warning lights illuminate and stay on for the duration of the episode. these last anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes. in the meantime, the car runs normally from what i can discern. i can be driving down the highway at 70 or sitting in the parking lot idling and these episodes occur. there are no other indications that something is amiss...no rough idling, no engine stalling, just the display.

The driver side power window master switch started to smoke, after starting my vehicle and pressing the switch to roll down my windows. i turned the vehicle off and my car filled with smoke. i immediately called the fire department. once the fire department arrived my car was no longer smoking. the firefighters could not tell me what caused the smoke but stated it was not safe for me to drive the vehicle. they recommended i have my car towed to the dealership because there was a strong smell of melted electrical wires. i had my car towed to a toyota dealership and they stated my master switch was shorting out and it was not covered under my warranty because my mileage was past 35,000 for electrical problems. *tr

My 2007 toyota camry le on july 15, 2012 12:15 pm, driving back from church about 3 miles from home, we noticed a horrible rubber burning smell. as we continue driving no more than a mile, the vehicle driver window power switch started smoking; upon trying to roll down the windows to avoid the shocking smell, the windows would not roll down. infant and adults started coughing profusely. air conditioning was on and we turned it off with no change. windows were stuck and not able to roll down, the smell and cough got stronger. we had to pull over to get air and had the toddler and young adults walk home due to the smell. we turned the car off for about half hour to cool down without any success. as soon as the car's ignition switch was turned on it started smoking again, per the toyota car dealer where i bought the car brand new 5 years ago; the car is unsafe to drive and a health hazard. i reported the incident to toyota corporation on monday july 16, 2012 and as of today thursday, july 20, 2012 after several attempts to contact toyota; they returned my call just to inform me that my case was escalated to a supervisor and that i will get a call back tomorrow. per the toyota dealer that inspected my vehicle, the issue is the master power switch. the dealer was nice enough to waive the inspection fee due to the severity of the issue. prior to this incident, i noticed that sometimes the passenger front door did not lock upon setting the alarm. as time went by it stopped working all together. then the same door, front passenger window would not roll down on occasions and the day of the incident it rolled down by itself. i rolled the window up and after the incident all 4 windows are nonfunctional. *tr

Upon entering the vehicle there was a smell similar to that of what one would expect from an electrical fire. i immediately drove to the nearest dealer for service. anything related to audio no longer functioned. the audio from the navigation unit, am, fm, cd, satellite radio, aux and bluetooth were not functioning. i was informed what happened was a known issue where the spring on the back side of the trunk pops out of place, touches the back speaker and creates a short in the circuit. the fuse in the circuit blew but the current kept going. i was told this destroyed the entire audio system and it would be approximately $2000 to replace. there has not been a recall on this, however, it is and has been a known issue. i believe that because this was a problem that was known to exist, and nothing was ever mentioned about it or done about it to correct it, toyota should be responsible for repairing the damage that was caused. the electrical burning smell very easily could have started a fire had i not taken immediate precautions.

On 12/26/11, i was driving my car along with three passengers and began to see black smoke throughout the car. i determined that the smoke was coming from the driver side master control panel on the door. shortly thereafter, the smoke immediately turned into flames, which caused poor visibility and complete panic. luckily, i pulled to the side of the road and had all passengers immediately exit the vehicle. prior to exiting the vehicle, the flames caught the left side of my arm and started to burn my coat. during this ordeal, i noticed that the front passenger side window immediately dropped unexpectedly. after exiting the vehicle the flames quickly increased and began shooting into the air uncontrollably. on instinct, i decided to leave the car door open facing the street as i was fearful to close the door, which would further exacerbate the fire. my husband was able to retrieve a piece of clothing from the trunk of the car and used it to put out the fire while sustaining a burn on his hand. i immediately called 911 as they dispatched the fire department to the scene. the fire department completely extinguished the fire and indicated that it may have been caused due to electrical problems. overall, it was a freightening experience for myself and family members as i strongly feel that no one has a clear explanation as to the cause of the fire and fails to ensure my familys safety and well being. i immediately contacted my insurance agent, the dealership and explained the incident in detail along with filing a complaint with toyota motor corporation. this is a significant incident that occurred and further investigation and consideration should be taken. this incident fortunately did not lead to any serious physical injuries, however the emotional trauma and distress caused by the ordeal is long-lasting.

I just got in the car and was driving when i smelled something burning. it was at night so i could not see where it was coming from so i pulled over and noticed smoke was coming from the front left driver side door and even through the window switch. i turned around and went back home so i can turn the car off and let the smoke escape the car. it stopped smoking after awhile but now i cant use none of my windows except the driver side. the other switches are stuck they wont move seemed like that what was burning. this definitily needs to be investigated because with a car only 4 years old, this should not be happening. the car has been well maintained. called toyota and the main power window switch is 350, something that i should not be responsible for.

I wanted to pass along this fix as the tsb seem not to have a soulution . i have filed this under electrical as this is the common symptons (dash gauges jump) ; however the failure is in the brakes (abs distribution). i first noticed my dash gauges (temp, tach, spedometer, and transmission selection) were jumpy or non operative. it resembeled a low battery problem. the dealer 1st suggested i replace battery--still has problem, then they stated they found loose wire under dash--still had problem, finally (after i explained there were many online complaints of others with remedies that did not work) they advised toyota had a tsb for the abs distribution that would cause dash gauges to work irradically. part was replaced under extended warranty. car seems fine...a plus, car no longer feels like brakes are dragging when letting off accelerator pedal. i hope this helps others.

Almost every time we exit our vehicle we get a very strong electrical shock. this doesn't happen every day but approximately 3 or 4 days a week. we are pretty tired of getting shocked as it is not a little shock but enough to make you jump. we try to tap the frame of the door before we close it to release the electrical current. this doesn't usually help though.

I was driving my 2007 toyota camry when sparks flew from under the drivers side front seat, then came a popping sound. this happened again, but this time a flame came after the sparks. i was driving around 55 mph whenever this happened, and i was on a very busy freeway during rush hour (5:30 p.m.) traffic. i was able to pull off to the shoulder, but by then the fire was spreading across the drivers seat. i was able to stop by using the tip of my toes to apply the brakes. the fire burned my pant legs significantly, while burning a couple areas of my calves. the fire department was able to put the fire out, but by then my car was totaled. the fireman and my insurance investigator stated that they believed the fire started because of electrical, which may have been from my power seats. luckily, myself nor anyone else was killed during this horrendous ordeal.

2007 toyota camry. initially when the car was turned on the brake light, and abs light would come on along with the tacometer, speedometer would begin racing while in park. at this time the engine cooling system would go down to c this happened half a dozen times and it was taken to toyota dealers. i spent 618.00 for repairs and i was told the car was fixed. toyota dealer also stated i was able to drive the car and there would be no problems. after spending money for repairs within 24 hours the problem began again. now this time not only when you were in park would the lights come on the began coming on while i was driving. so i could not tell what speeds i was doing and unable to tell if i had brakes when the light came on. so it was taken back to the same dealership and this time they want to replace skid control ecu/actuator per tech line and want me to spend over 2000.00 to fix the problem even though i have a bill of sale that states problem was fixed just days before

I purchased my 2007 toyota camry in 2006 when the new model first came out. immediately after buying the car i contacted the dealership about a hesitation and acceleration problem. i wanted to return the car and they told me no it was now a used car. i contacted toyota headquarters as well and in 2007 i was told it is probably and electronics problem but has not been recalled yet. my vehicle was involved in the recall, i took it in for the service and the car is still having problems. toyota has dismissed my complaints. i have felt from day one that this vehicle is unsafe and continues to be unsafe. toyota refuses to give me my money back, i have lost resale value and cannot even sell the car now. i am very frustrated and angry over this situation. i have to continue to pay my car loan even though i refuse to drive this car.

I own a toyota camry 2007 se. i have repeatedly taken the car back to the dealership for service for a problem reported by others: momentary hesitation in acceleration when stepping on the gas. i have had the computer reprogrammed several times and the dealership tells me this is just how it is made. it is dangerous when trying to accelerate at a critical time. in addition, i had another odd experience. i had started the car while in my garage, fastened my seat belt, put my foot on the break, and unfortunately reached for the open car door at the same time i put the car in reverse. the car learched backward while my foot was still on the break, the car door took out shelving and my chest freezer and the wheels were still spinning and had to turn the car off. needless to say it caused property damage and over $3,000 damage to my car. of course i took the car to the dealership immediately and they checked it and said that there was no problem with the car and that they had never heard of this before. there were no bulletins on this issue. they made me feel stupid and said that obviously i had my foot on the gas. i know that my foot was on the break. with all of the recall issues, i am becoming frighterned about driving this car!!

The only thing i noticed before this incident happened was the passenger side window stopped working a month before and that same week i noticed my bright lights would not turn on. then on 3/18/10 my 2007 toyota camry caught on fire while driving. i turned on car as i was driving i started to smell smoke. i looked down and seen smoke coming out of the drivers side window switch. by the time i was able to pull over, park and open my car door park flames started coming out of the drivers side door panel. due to my vehichle warranty being expired the toyota dealership made me go threw my insurance company refusing to even touch the car. i was told that the fire was the first of that kind that they have heard of. i was told the fire started by the wiring in the door but what caused the wiring to catch on fire. they told me that all the wiring in the door and the door panel is being replaced. as of now the dealership is holding the parts until toyota product liablility claims department contacts them.

2007 toyota camry xle -- i saw something on tv that there may be in an issue with power grids/electro magnetic fields and the newer camry's. my wife has a 2007 camry and there is full block in downtown tampa (next to teco our hq for power in tampa) that her push-button start will absolutely not work. initially, i thought it was a battery issue with the responder and replaced it. the push button start worked everywhere except next to this grid and is still an issue -- we have to park one block away to go to that area. although, there are no direct safety issues with this issue it may be good information for your overall study. there is definitely something there preventing her car to work correctly. other vehicles in this same area have the same issue.

I own a 2007 toyota camry i had a accident in the vehicle on september 17, 2009 in jackson, tn. i told the officers and the insurance company that i tried to stop but was unable to i also told them that something was wrong it would not stop until i went into a ditch. two days later toyota did a recall on the floor mats. i found out about the floor mats this year in febuary 2010. i contacted toyota and found out that they had the wrong name as being the owner and said they would get me the recall information mailed to my home. the company did send me the information i called the local toyota dealersip her and they told me i could bring my vehicle in. it states on the papers that toyota will replace the pedal with a new one if i wanted to wait for it in and that they would replace the older all weather floor mats and clean the carpet. this did not happen for me i now have the same dirty floor that i had before i took it to them and now i'm riding in a rental car because since they put the reinforcement bar on my car the check engine light has come on and i'm afraid even more to drive the car i took it to the dealership and they told corporate that i would have to pay them to check out the car and my manual says that if this light comes on that it is the electronic throttle, the dealership told me it could be up to 200 different things and that unless i pay for this they would not do anything to assist me i can write a letter to the claims department but there is no gurantee that they will reimburse me for my rental or for fixing the vehicle, also that my floor mats are now aftermarket mats and the will not do anything to them either nor my floor please do something they are not fixing these vehicles and are not standing by there word i can not afford to pay anymore money to get this vehicle fix and detailed and i have no other means of transportation.the people at corporate say they are sticking by the dealership and i need to pay to get this fixed!

I have a 2007 japanese-made camry. i bought at a premium (well above invoice and above msrp because servco hawaii does not give discounts) thinking i was paying for a reliable and well-made vehicle. i have had other toyotas but none with as many problems as this vehicle. and, with all the news of accelerator problems, i would like my problems checked and not be charged for it. i do not like the idea of having to pay $103 (1hr labor) x 3 different accelerator issues + another $103 to see why there is the smell of gasoline coming from the a/c vent. 1. when stepping on the accelerator, i will get no response... i continue to depress the gas, still no response. then finally, the car will thrust forward violently. this has been mentioned to toyota hawaii dealer several times saying it was normal for drive by wire vehicle and that it will take some getting used to. 2. when accelerating slowly, the car will rev high without the automatic transmission upshifting.. i have to depress the gas more and the car will rev even higher before upshifting. 3. on 2 different times, the car has revved and jumped forward while not in gear. the first time was at an intersection. i shifted into neutral with the p-brake on and it felt as if someone hit my car from the rear. the car jumped into the busy crosswalk about 2 feet until i hit the brake pedal and shifted it back into drive. another time was at the drive-thru window in park. the car didn't move but jerked violently. both were on flat surfaces. 4. when under heavy acceleration, the car sometimes give off the smell of gasoline. it is not exhaust fumes but smells of raw gasoline. a/c in recirculate mode. i also have been having numerous other quality problems with excessive rattling of trim and door ajar alarm going off for no reason. *tr

2007 toyota camry acceleration problem*cw the consumer stated while driving on a two lane section of the highway, the vehicle accelerated out of control up to 90 mph and it didn't respond to any braking effort. even after shifting the automatic transmission into neutral, the vehicle would simply not slow down, even with both feet on the brake. finally, the consumer decided to turn off the key. once the key was turned off, the vehicle finally began to slow down. the consumer stated the pedal was not trapped under the mat and he believed there was some type of computer or software problem, since the vehicle was put into neutral without any effect. *jb updated 03/29/10.*jb

My 2007 camry hesitates when trying to accelerate from a standstill, and rpm keeps dropping from 2000 rpm to 1000 rpm for a second and back to 2000 rpm as i'm trying to maintain speed. it could make my car to slide on icy road because of this engine braking, and it happens every time i just touch gas pedal and let go rpm drops and goes back to cruising rpm all in 1 second. this happens as soon as i remove my foot of the gas pedal, causing like braking feeling. i told toyota dealership in guelph, ontario about this problem but their master service advisor craig allen says that is normal. i believe that there is electronic throttle issue. *tr

On 7/31/2007, i purchased a brand new toyota camry se from knoxville toyota. on april 20, 2008, i was driving my toyota camry se westbound on route 26 just west of columbia, sc, at a speed of 60mph. i then hit my cruise control to increase the speed to pass a vehicle, when my accelerator stuck and my speed went almost immediately to 105 mph. all efforts to unstick my accelerator failed me.( i am a 54 yr old retired fbi special agent who has often been in high speed pursuit- so i know how to handle vehicles at high speeds) traffic was relatively heavy, with a couple 18 wheelers, and several cars with families in front of me. i recalled there being a flyer of warning by toyota on rubber mats, so i reached down, yanked the rubber mat off the floor and threw it into the back seat, all the while standing on the brake pedal, trying to get the car not to hit vehicles in front of me. finally i put the car in neutral and coasted the car out of traffic. smoke was coming out of my front brakes, and once on the right side median, i turned the car off. let it cool down, then got back on rt 26. less than five minutes later, while passing a slower vehicle, my accelerator stuck again, and the speed got to 95 mph before i put the car in neutral again and turned it off. i brought my car into the knoxville toyota dealership 4/21/08 (complaint of 4/21/08 was documented at toyota knoxville, po box 30069, knoxville tn.)and they put it on their machine and said nothing was wrong. for the next year, i experienced shimming of my front tires when braking. on 5/5/09, i paid over $171 to repair warped rotors. when the re-call occurred, i reminded them of my event, which appears to have been an electronic issue involving my cruise control on the first event. they put my car in to have their fix done to my accelerator, however i am not convinced it fixed my issue. i am very concerned that toyota has hidden this problem from its customers, and i am not convinced this vehicle is safe. *tr

This is more for your internal investigation of toyota. i work in automotive supplier business for headliners. starting in 2007 on camry and other vehicles toyota installed carbon fiber based headliners, which have been know to create electronic fields that interfere with unshielded car electronics...we used to joke that toyota had to invest another $10-15 per car to fix electronic issues related to its already over-priced headliner, shortly after cars were introduced. *tr

Since i purchased my 2007 camry in june 2007, i have experienced an electrical problem where my console lights (dashboard, stereo, etc.) dim and brighten sporadically. i drive and the lights will suddenly brighten dramatically. it will repeat during the duration of my trip. it happens every time that i drive at night, from the first night i drove home with a new car. it is unrelated to acceleration/deceleration or anything i do mechanically. none of the dashboard controls change when the lights brighten and dim. it is only visible at night, although the problem likely occurs continuously. i am concerned that this indicates a deeper electrical problem that might be related to the ongoing problems with toyota. *tw

We have a 2007 camry xle and the car surges when the cruise control is on and going up a hill. if the cruise is set for 67mph the car has a about 2300 rpm. going up a moderate hill, the car downshifts and goes to 3400 rpm. it then surges to 4700 rpm which puts the drivers head into the head rest. the issue has been going on since we bought the car in may of 2007. we called our local dealer(topsham, maine lee toyota), and they said it was what the computer was programmed to do. i asked again the 1st time i had it in for service and received the same response. it does only happen with the cruise control on, so we have learned to shut off the cruise control going up any hills. we have a 2nd issue with our 2007 camry which toyota refuses to fix. if the rear defrost is turned on while the radio is on, the radio goes dead. the radio antenna and defrost wires are in the same window, and one is shorting out the other. i was told that since no fire occurs to turn off the radio while the rear defrost is on. i have read many similar issues on the internet and told toyota such. *tr

2007 camry xle. problems with hesitation when accelerating. the dealership just blew me off when i explained the problem. acted as if this was never a problem with camrys. also have had problems with steering column's radio controls - when pressing the appropriate buttons, nothing would happen or, when seeking stations that were programmed in, the down or up buttons would jump to other stations not programmed. since this problem is erratic, nothing was done by dealer. problems with the outdoor temperature gauge - at times, it would take 15-20 minutes before the temperature would change to the correct one. example: it read 77 degrees when it was actually in the mid-90s. dealership did repair this last summer but now, it is reading seven+ degrees off the actual outdoor temperature. the final problem with this car is that the paint is chipping off of the frame area below the doors of the car. this has never happened with any previous car i have owned. dealer attributed it to the fact that this car is the sport version so it rides lower. first toyota i have owned and it looks like it may be my last. *tr

The vehicle is a 2007 toyota camry xle sedan. while driving locally, the electronic instrument cluster in front of the driver which contains all of the operational information about the vehicle (speedometer, tachometer, fuel and oil gauges, all safety monitoring indicators, odometer, etc.) had a total power failure. everything went totally black and nothing was visible. about 5 seconds later, everything returned to normal operation. the failure is not reproducible for the car dealership to diagnose, so they do not know how to fix it or where to start looking. this would seem to represent a serious safety hazard where the driver is suddenly operating the vehicle blind.*cw

The us federal trade commission has determined in its 2006 & 2007 reports that the toyota camry was the highest listed vehicle to be arbitrated. the failure i encountered was that the vehicle failed to move or react when you applied the gas pedal, this is due to a serious gap in response time due to the toyota drive by wire process, software flash updates per the tsb-ecm are not solving the problem, which led to my accident, this problem may have the potential for causing serious injury or death as a result of not being able to accelerate out of harms way. i encourage toyota camry owners to return their vehicles per their states respective lemon laws or the federal magnuson-moss act. 2006 toyota has the highest complaint rating, 286 complaints, totaling 83.9% of the complaints. toyota has the top 3 spots for complaints on their vehicles the toyota camry was the most complained about vehicle from everyone in all groups 42 complaints, totaling 12.3% of all complaints. 2007 again toyota took 85 complaints, totaling 84.2% the top 3 vehicles were from toyota, the camry again is in place number 3 12 total complaints, totaling 11.9%, the highest now 2 years in a row. the reports were obtained from http://www.ncdsusa.org. *tr

Intermittently, the vehicle will not respond to the throttle. the problem happens frequently, particularly when i brake and decelerate from above 30mph, then make a turn, such as exiting an off ramp, at about 5-20 mph, i press the accelerator to accelerate out of the turn, and the throttle does not respond for about 3 to 15 seconds. i consider this a serious safety issue where i cannot depend on the vehicle responding to the throttle allowing me to control the vehicle. this problem happens under other circumstances, and is completely unpredictable, but the above scenario is the most consistent. i took the vehicle to toyota for this issue for the second time and was told:

After slowing to make a right or left turn, the accelerator sticks preventing/slowing acceleration in order to complete the turn out of the intersection and clear of oncoming traffic. judging from internet sites through google, this is a problem that toyota dealerships (mine included) are aware of, but do not want to do anything about. *tr

My 2007 toyota camry hesitates when you first press on the gas. it has happened as long as 3 seconds. from a stopped position, pulling out on to a hwy. and going left, my car got me out on to the hwy. but then hesitated. i was still pressing on the gas heavily, but my car was not going! i would estimate about 3 seconds. i had an oncoming car traveling toward me and i was stopped in his lane unable to do anything. this hesitation happens frequently. i would say this happens several times everytime i drive my car. toyota service dept. says he has had several complaints regarding this issue and this year and make. he knew what i was talking about as soon as i made the call to him regarding the problem. he said that it is a problem with the main computer in the car. i took it in and they had to preform an ecu update' which he said basically is resetting the computer. sounds easy, but it took them 2hrs to complete. i am afraid someone is going to be killed due to this ecu problem! i could have been!!! *tr

On several occasions, while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the engine hesitated severely. on more than one occasion attempts to cross at a crossroads or enter a freeway with plenty of time before traffic arrived resulted in several near misses with other cars. the failure of the vehicle to accelerate properly could cause an accident to occur. we have taken the vehicle to greenville toyota in greenville nc, and they said it was a chip in the computer and that they were aware of the problem but were unable to do anything about it. greenville toyota representatives advised it was a manufacturer's issue. *ak

I purchased a new 2007 toyota camry in june 2006. after returning the car to the dealership several times because of the sluggish acceleration from a stop was consistent and the passing gear downshift felt delayed as if there was a communication lag between the tcm and actual switching of the shift solenoids at speeds less than 50 mph. the cruise control will not set speed. on steeper grades and on the interstate the down shifts are very frequent and at times very dramatic. when cresting a steep hill the transmission down shifts at the crest and takes 2 or 3 seconds to release the throttle, picking up anywhere from 10 to 15 mph and i have to break suddenly in order to slow the car down. i was told by toyota representative that a technical service bulletin came out in september of 2006 for an ecm calibration enhancement to shifting performance and smoothness and this new computer software had to be downloaded in the car and this would recalibrate ecm (pcm) engine & transmission. the catcher to this is that the customer has to request this download before the dealership will follow through. if you don't know about the bulletin how can an average customer request this? the download was performed on this car but didn't help any. the dealership took the car back and i was given a new one in dec. 2006. same thing with this one. i have been through national center for dispute settlement with an appointed arbitrator who had the car inspected by an ase independent inspector. he agreed with the above but in conclusion stated that toyota should diagnose and repair as necessary. i feel that this is a no win situation for the consumer and toyota knows all about the problems but just doesn't know how to correct them. because of the lack of safety the lemon law should be put into effect and these cars recalled. toyota is not going to take responsibility unless forced. this is my first and last toyota vehicle. *jb

Throttle response delay in 2007 toyota camry (4 cyl. auto) camry - bought new 4/06 from toyota of nashua (nh). defect is a delay of 1 1/2 seconds in throttle response. delay was most noticeable at normal urban traffic speeds of 35 to 45 mph. a light increase in throttle at constant highway speeds in the 35 to 45 mph range resulted in the engine 1) usually not remaining in high gear 2) having no response for 1 1/2 seconds, and 3) then roughly down-shifting, as if the driver had called for strong acceleration. the car's speed sagged, and then the car's engine oversped. the driver then had to decrease throttle to prevent overspeed in traffic. pulling out into traffic becomes unpredictable and dangerous. delay and/or over-response in the throttle control's action may create skids on wet and icy roads. less experienced drivers may become un-nerved by this kind of throttle response. toyota's response to complaints consisted of these replies: (listed in the order in which they were given over multiple service visits) 1. we know what it is. it is the fly-by-wire control. they all do it and the owner has to live with it (spoken over the phone prior to the first service visit) 2. operating as designed.. this isn't a safety issue. 3. the camrys have a driver habit imprint feature which adapts to the driver's style. 4. the car is pretty much normal. 5. he has seen a few of these. (garage tech rep.) during service appointments, the dealership supplied three 4 cylinder, automatic 2007 camrys as loaners. none of these cars demonstrated the same drive-train behavior. the writer has been told of two other camrys which exhibit the problem: hey are serial #s: 4t1be46k27uxxxxxx and 4t1be46k87uxxxxxx a similar complaint is documented on-line in the car and driver magazine's user review. *nm

I do not own the 2007 toyota camry or the lexus es350 , but in the course of test driving both of the vehicles, i was shocked to discover that the start/stop button defeats the older ignition key iinterlock system. in the older keyed ignition system the car must be in park to turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition. in the 2007 models of lexus and camry the engine can be turned off with the vehicle in drive simply by touching the brake. here is no ignition key to place in the steering column.. please read the following which i sent to your site this morning and was asked to file a formal complaint: 2007 toyota camry and lexus es 350 do not use an ignition key. they use a remote which must be in close proximity to the vehicle when the start/stop button is pressed. other manufacturers (bmw, volvo) use both a key in the steering column and the start/stop button. while this second option at first seems redundant, it is a safety feature and toyota/lexus products may be prone to rolling when stopped in the following scenario: toyota/lexus: driver touches brake and hits the start/stop button to turn off the engine, but driver forgets to move the transmission from drive to park. upon releasing the brake the vehicle will move, if not on level ground. bmw/volvo: as above, but driver is unable to pull key from steering column because vehicle is not in park. therefore, driver places transmission in park before exiting the car, otherwise he will not have the vehicle key with him on leaving the car. the infiniti m35x awd uses a start/stop button, but beeps an alarm when the car is stopped in drive. in summary: redundancy (key/start-stop button) and alarms serve a useful safety purpose and should be incorporated into the toyota/lexus products. alternatively, the start/stop button should be active only when the vehicle is in park or neutral. *ak

2007 toyota camry xle with smart key , keyless ignition. page 320 of the owners manual states caution do not touch the engine start stop switch while driving, in bracketed yellow background. next paragraph states in regular bw print; if you have to make an emergency stop, press and hold the engine start switch for more than three seconds. the fallacy of this is the vehicle speed must be under 3 mph. if you apply the emergency brake/parking brake the engine will quit at below 40 mph. i went thru several tests to determine this flaw. this is poor design. i have heard via tv that the lexus 350 ,almost same vehicle as camry xle except for nicer interior and seats, has an uncommanded acceleration problem. probably all 2007 lexus vehicles have keyless ( smart key) ignition. if you were traveling at 70 mph and got uncommanded acceleration with smart key you would be in a bad situation. i have not had an uncommanded acceleration and do not want one at interstate speeds. *tr

After 4985 miles, the check engine light activated. there was a smell of burning electrical wires. dealer/service originally diagnosed the problem as a failure of the variable valve timing actuator, but later re-diagnosed the problem as a failure of the wiring harness. the car was returned 11/30/06. after 20 minutes of driving, the check engine light reactivated. i returned the car immediately. on 12/01/06, the dealer/service diagnosed the problem and said a vacuum tube disconnected. i picked up car on 12/01/06. after a couple hours of driving, the p for park light illuminated while i was in drive. (the p and d indicators were both illuminated as i was driving. also, the door locks on all doors engaged and disengaged uncontrollably and continuously. i was not able to manually lock or unlock my car doors using the lock/unlock switch on the drive-side door since it was deactivated as a result of the malfunction. i took the car back to the dealer/service on 12/02/06 for this problem. dealer/service diagnoses the problem as a electrical short due to a coolant leak. i was promised that the car would be returned 12/4/06 afternoon. *nm
