Car : 2008 toyota camry le, 30k miles still under factory warranty problem : unintended sudden breaking after toyota's recall description: i am owner of 2008 toyota camry le. my car experienced an unintended accleration problem once. local toyota dealer applied recall to fix this issue. now my car applies unintended breaks. this has happened 3 times in last 15 days, each of the symptoms described below 1) trying to coast to stop, car was going at 50mph, as soon as i step foot off pedal, car slowed drastically, break light didn't come on but car reduce speed from 50mph to 35mph and kept on reducing. note that i never pressed break pedal but breaks were applied automatically to wheels. this happened twice. 2) trying to merge into freeway, speed between 45-50mph & trying to acclerate, suddenly lost speed from 50 to 40mph in matter of 2 seconds, my foot was on acclerator all the time. we were almost rear ended by vehicle following us, i request you to look into this cars stopping by themself are equally as bad as cars acclerating by themself. we have experienced first hand when we were almost rearended by a car. kindly look into this.

11 days ago the marina toyota dealership performed both toyota recall repairs on my 2008 camry. on march 10, around 0519 am, i was starting to park my car at the gym. i applied the brakes to slow into the parking stall. the moment that i applied the brakes; the engine started to race; the car lurched forward; the brakes were useless in stopping the vehicle; and i could not steer the vehicle. my vehicle slammed into a parked jeep cheroke; the jeep inturn collided with a parked subaru outback. my vehicle was towed to the dealership and we are waiting for toyota's technicians to examine the car. i am very thankful to god that no one was injured or killed in this incident. however, i firmly believe that my camry is unsafe and i will never drive it again. i have written the vehicle off as a total loss. since i am a jehova witness, i cannot sell the vehicle because then i would be blood-guilty if anyone was injured or killed by the vehicle. i am a electrical engineer with a masters degree in electronics and control systems. i have 32 years experience in systematically solving electrical problems (particularly intermittent electrical issues). in my case, given the simultaneous failure of multiple systems (engine rpm control, braking and steering), the cause is definitely electrical , not mechanical. my experience with computer controls strongly suggests that the key hardware involved is the on-board cpu. therefore, in my professional engineering opinion, toyota has not determined the root cause of the sudden acceleration problem.

On 1/16/09 i rear-ended a mercedes suv after attempting to stop my 08 toyota camry. i could not make it slow or stop, even having sufficient space on the road to do so. as a result, i had significant damage to the front end of my camry, a $500 deductible to pay as well as two weeks of not having the car in use. i also have been doubly penalized in the fact that my car insurance has gone up. at the time, toyota claimed there was nothing wrong with the auto, it had to be driver error. i have had all of the recall work done on the car. it has still been racing it's own engine when stopped at red lights etc. i no longer feel safe in this vehicle. i did trade it in, but had to suffer a loss of $$ in the fact that it had little value to anyone. the dealer plans to dump it as soon as the title comes thru. he will not put it on his lot for resale. i just wanted to let you know that this problem is continuing even after toyota states there is nothing wrong. *tr

Safety issue with my 2008 toyota camry hybrid i have 2008 toyota camry hybrid. it is extremely unstable on snow. the car skid a lot on snow and brakes are not very efficient on snow. my car has skidded several times and i am worried about me and my family's safety. i reported the matter to toyota on their website on nov. 26, 2009. toyota responded back on dec. 3rd via email saying that they have opened a file (#0912105992/ incident: 091126-000277) and a case manager will contact me. till date no one has contacted me. i spoke to go toyota, centennial colorado based toyota dealer personnel and he said i should pursue the matter directly with toyota. he acknowledged that they have received complaints about poor performance of toyota's hybrids in snow. i am really upset about toyota's handling of the case as no one has contacted me so far. in fact they were quick enough to even send me a customer satisfaction survey on how was their response without even contacting me. to be on the safer side i changed my tires with high quality michelin tires. the oem bridgestone tires were very poor on snow from day one of my purchase of camry hybrid. on nov. 22, 2009 while i was traveling with my family i had a narrow escape when my camry skidded and hit the sidewalk. at that time it had barely started snowing with less than 1 inch of snow on the ground. the car could not even climb a small slope on the road while other cars were passing by without any problems. this incident has made me nervous about driving my car on snow. after tire change the stability has improved but i still feel that braking and stability is big issue with toyota camry hybrid. this model is not mentioned in current recalls but i would request nhtsa to investigate the stability of toyota hybrids on the snow. - best regards. *tr

The front rotors in my 2008 toyota camry have warped twice in less than 24,00 miles. in both instances the dealer cut them, but i believe there is a defect with the product. i have asked the dealer to replace them, but they have refused to do so.

I was dropping my children off at school when my camry went forward and i was unable to brake and my car went directly into a fire hydrant approximately 20 feet away. i was driving at a very slow rate of speed as i approached to turn a corner but the car accelerated straight ahead into the hydrant. i dislocated part of my foot because i was pressing on the brake as hard as i could to stop the car but it would not stop. it was as if i had no control over the car. the brakes and/or anti-lock brakes did not do anything. the anti-lock brakes did not activate. we had the car repaired at our expense but were not aware of the recall at that time and did not have the accelerator looked at. i was told at our last maintenance appointment that the floor mat in my car was secured but that the car would be recalled. i believe it was reported to the police when i was taken to the emergency room but i do not know if they made a report. *tr

I own a 2008 toyota camry and have had a few serious problems that were never recognized by the toyota dealer which i always serviced the car. they range from small to serious. front struts seem to be leaking hydraulic fluid, i also complained about a steering problem to the dealer, they inspected the car and told me they found nothing wrong. the steering issue was very apparent, and now has gotten worse. when cornering at low or higher speeds the car seems to skip, and controlling the car gets much more difficult, which becomes a serious safety issue for me. there where service bulletins available for these issues but yet my car was never repaired. another issue i have noticed has been with braking, the car will vibrate dramatically once brakes are applied. the brakes have been replaced and rotors have been cut 5 months ago. the car has new tires and has been aligned in the past 6 months as requested by the toyota dealer, yet the steering problems persist. i feel very unsafe driving this car, in back of my mind i feel like something serious might happen every time i get in this car and drive it. i have no confidence driving this car. *tr

Delayed braking in 2008 toyota camry hybrid - i have experienced what i consider to be a slow braking response in my car since i purchased it new in may 2008. i have always felt as though the brakes in my 2008 camry hybrid do not engage quickly enough in all braking situations. the sensation i get is, the car feels like it is pulling forward in resistance to the braking action creating what feels like a slow braking response. i have always assumed the slow braking response is due to the interaction between the gas engine, electric motor and the regenerative braking system. i have discussed the concerns i have with my dealer and have been told the brakes are working as designed. now that i am reading about two (or three) toyota recalls, i think there is at least a possibility that the slow brake response may be a design flaw. i was involved in an accident 5/13/2009 where i rearended another car on route 84 in farmington ct. when the traffic slowed, i thought i had plenty of time to stop. the braking reaction in my vehicle startled me when the car took longer than expected to slow down and resulted in an accident. this was my first at fault accident in 38 years of driving. i continue to be startled by the braking action in this car and definitely will not buy another camry hybrid. the car was repaired by toyota and is in good condition. the brakes continue to produce what i consider to be a slow response. my only other thought regarding the slow braking is the possible impact of the added weight from the hybrid system and batteries in a car that was originally designed for a gas engine only. *tr

I have waited until a good year has passed since i purchased the camry. driving in the los angles area i experience quite a few incidences where i need to brake abruptly. i find that the braking is controlled by the abs system, which is not responding to my request for a very quick stop. in most of these incidences my brake pedal will bottom out. i reported this problem when the car was serviced, 11/7/08, and was informed that it?s just the way the car, braking system, was designed by toyota. in the last 3 months the brake pedal has hit the floor of the car over 12 times. 7 of them i came to close to hitting the car in front and felt it took 30% (or more) longer distance to stop than it should have. all of these events have occurred while going straight in dry conditions, so skidding was not an issue. my previous two autos, i30 and acura, both had abs and i never experienced anything like this. at this time i have very little confidence that i can brake in an emergency. it is so bad my wife will only drive the car as a last resort. *tr

The car severely vibrates even on low speed which makes driving like riding a horse. also it doesn't accelerate properly when i want to, which is really dangerous in many situations. it can cause accidents. there's noise comes from transmission and brakes all the time. i went to the dealer twice and the technician tried to play the idiot game by saying i see nothing wrong. i contacted toyota and they told me that if i'm crazy enough to buy their car, i should keep quiet. i moved to ca recently and with heavy traffic, the car becomes really annoying. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 toyota camry. when attempting to accelerate at 50 mph, the vehicle hesitated and then began to accelerate past the intended speed. after repeated brake application she was able to decelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and all of the tires were replaced. after the repair the failure resurfaced. she took the vehicle back to the dealer, and the technician completed a software update. he then added that the rotors were out- of- round and thus needed to be turned. none of the repairs have remedied the failure. the technician then concluded that because they could not duplicate the failure, they could not provide a remedy. she inspected her vehicle and noticed that the clips did not properly secure the cover to the air filter housing. the failure mileage was 17000. the current mileage was 35000. updated 2/22/10 *cn
