Defect SummarySoutheast toyota distributors, llc (set) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 tacoma, 4runner, camry, camry hybrid, prius, and rav4; model year 2009-2010 avalon, fj cruiser, and highlander hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year corolla, sienna and tundra; model year 2009-2013 highlander and venza; model year 2012 prius v; and model year 2010-2012 sequoia. during modification by set to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest dvd systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
Consequence SummaryIf the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. this could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
Corrective SummarySoutheast toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. the recall is expected to begin during january 2013. owners may contact southeast toyota at 1-800-301-6859.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

While stopped at a light, we were struck on the driver's side of car by another vehicle at the side and front door with enough force to rotate the vehicle 90 degrees, push it over a high curb and to cause nearly $15,000 in damage to body and chassis. not one of the airbags deployed, resulting in head injury to the driver. *tr

The operation of the side seat airbags on the toyota camry are compromised due to the fact that the integrity of the seat cushion has a design flaw that causes the cushion to collapses around the airbag. which would change the angle of the airbag and cause it not to deploy properly. *tr

My 2007 toyota camry le was rear-ended at around 40-50 miles per hour and it was pushed into the car in front of me. so i was struck from the back and then the front. the other two cars' airbags deployed but mine did not. i notice there are front and side tests done on cars but never when one is rear-ended. i went to the emergency room with a headache and stiffness in my neck and was diagnosed with whiplash - head and back. everyone i've mentioned this to wondered why my airbags did not deploy. can you tell me if it should have? fortunately my seatbelt worked and restrained me and i did not bump my head on anything other than the headrest. just wondering if i should be concerned that my airbag did not deploy. oh, and my just-paid off camry was totaled -- over $12,000 in damages so i have to buy another car and wondering if i should consider another vehicle. i feel fortunate that i was able to walk away from the incident though there is no more truck so to speak left on my car. i'd like to get another camry but need to know if the lack of airbag deployment is important to consider when buying another car. also, i have been hearing that the floor mat recall on the toyotas from 2007 -2010 is not really a floor mat issue but an electrical one that toyota is not telling us about. what do you know about this? *tr

When my wife would get in the passenger seat of our camry and get belted in for a minute or so before i got in and started the car, the seat belt off light would illuminate. this has happened several times and does not seem to happen if i start the car before she belts in. this was reported to eddy's toyota and they recalibrated the seat sensors but the problem did not go away.

Last week my daughter was in a car accident and the front of her vehicle was pretty damaged, she was then slammed into the side rail on the freeway, but no aibags deployed. i am not sure why these airbags did not go, her car is now considered totaled. the car she was driving was a 2009 camry. considering this accident could have been fatal i am wondering why nothing happen when the car went in to a car/side rail.. both from the front.

Below you will find the email that i sent to toyota on february 7, 2010 as well as the response i received. to this date i have not received any other communication from toyota. i truly believe that one of these safety recalls led to my car accident in november, 2009. my vehicle was included in both the floor mat and accelerator recalls. discussion thread customer 02/07/2010 09:51 am i had a car accident 11-30-09 which resulted in the total loss of my 2009 camry le [xxx]. due to the closed head injury i received, i am unable to recall the accident. however, viewing the accident report, it appears my vehicle was traveling much faster than i travel on this roadway. it was noted that my side airbag did not deploy when my vehicle struck a tree on the drivers side door. due to the recalls, i am now concerned that one of the recall issues was the cause of my accident. my car is now at a salvage yard near atlanta, ga. and i feel that toyota should be concerned enough to check my car for defects. i bought this car based on your reputation for dependability and safety, and now due to the recalls, i can't imagine buying another toyota. perhaps my greatest concern are media reports that toyota has been aware of these problems for quite some time and chose not to notify owners. i now have to wonder about this companies ethics. date: sunday, february 7, 2010 12:51 pm from: ask toyota subject: safety shortcomings [incident: 100207-000212] thank you for contacting toyota motor sales, u.s.a., inc. we appreciate your consideration and hope to have your email addressed as quickly as possible. our current office hours are monday through friday from 5 am to 6 pm and saturday 7 am to 4 pm pacific time. if you need immediate assistance, we recommend you contact the customer relations manager at your local toyota dealership. *tr
