Had oil changed on 6/8/12 mechanic informed there was not much oil in the engine -mlg 93235. went to toyota-08/08/12-mlg 95739. we had added oil-1.5 qts on 08/04/12. they inspected oil level. oil level at proper level-told to come back in 1000 mls and not to add oil. came back on 8/30/12-oil level-found engine 2 qts low after driving 1040 mls.we were told to call customer service complaints and talked to monique. she requested some oil change receipts. we were able to submit 12 receipts with documented mileage. we also submitted an oil consumption report from toyota that included the 2009 camry and other models and years. the introduction of the toyota technical service bulletin dated 08/11/11 states some 2006-2011 model year vehicles equipped with the 2az-fe engine may exhibit engine oil consumption. the piston assembly has been changed to minimize oil consumption... on page 6 of this bulletin, point 6 states, determine the quantity of oil that was consumed in 1200 miles. was the oil level more than 1 qt low after 1200 miles of normal driving? yes-go to repair procedure no-this tsb does not apply. warranty guideline for acceptable oil consumption is 1 qt per 1200 miles of operation. no warranty claim should be filed. monique contacted us back and asked us to perform oil consumption test one more time. at that time, the toyota mechanics found engine oil 2.5 qts low after 1,503 miles.remove spark plugs and inspected cylinders with boroscope -found vertical scoring on cylinder walls due to improper piston and ring fit. monique contacted us after this finding and offered that toyota would pay $3000.00 to fix this and the total cost is a min. of $5,500. we have to pay $2,500.min. to rectify the issue. this car was purchased new not knowing there was a piston/ring fit problem. the problem appeared after warranty expired. this was their problem from the start.

Toyota motor corp. has issued service bulletin # t-sb-0094-11 dated aug. 11, 2011. this sb describes the diagnosis and repair of toyota motor cars and trucks using the 2az-fe 4 cylinder engine. these engines have a defect resulting in excessive oil consumption. excessive oil entering the combustion chamber does not burn with the fuel air mixture. it enters the exhaust system as unburned fuel. in the exhaust system there is a device called a catalytic converter. this device has a normal internal operating temp. of 500-1000 degrees f. oil entering this device is like pouring oil on the fire which results in exhaust system overheating anf fire. further...excessive oil entering the comsumption chamber results in engine spark plug fouling and mis-fire. engine mis-fire results in a most very serious consequence...namely...catalytic conv. overheating and fire. when a spark plug fouls, it does not fire and ignite the fuel and air in the cylinder. result? raw fuel enters the exhaust system including the catalytic converter. now you are pouring gasoline onto the fire.i suggest you folks investigate this engine defect, and determine if toyota needs to recall the vehicles having this 4 cylinder engine. if this excessive oil consumption problem is not addressed, to include those vehicles out of warranty, there is a potential for life threatening under hood and under car fire to occur on these high mileage vehicles. *tr

While backing out of my gargare unto the driveway and then into the street, it caused a unintended acceration while driving in reverse, causing almost a 90 degree spin and i had to slam on the brakes for it to finally stop. this happened once on 4/18/12 and then again the exact same thing happened again on 6/8/2012. the first time it happened i thought it was something i did and then when it happened again i knew that something was really wrong and when i realized the danger over that weekend i parked the car in my garage and have not driven it since. now i am hearing of car door panels catching on fire for 2007-2009 camrys...i will not even drive this car, it will be towed to the dealership this week. i will not be killed or kill someone waiting for something happen. i will never buy another toyota product again.

With toyota t-sb-0094-11, toyota acknowledges that they have a problem with oil consumption in a handful of car models. they have set the bar high in order to get the repair covered, either under the normal or extended warranty. the problem gets worse as time goes on, so most cars will not experience issues until they are near or passed their warranty mileage. a series of oil consumption tests is required, but in my experience, they do not make sure the oil is not over full. i have had two tests thus far, and both times they have overfilled my oil by ~0.5 quarts.

On wednesday, 2/16/11, at 4:50 p.m. i was travelling down sudbury street in boston, ma to make a right hand turn onto congress street in boston. i came down the hill and stopped at a red traffic light. my car, for no apparent reason, began to race and would not stop. i applied more pressure to the brake and shifted the car into park. it continued to race for 5-10 seconds after i did this. this was a very frightening incident, given there was a stopped vehicle in front of me, a vehicle behind me and many pedestrians at that hour. i no longer feel secure with the car and am anticipating that this may re-occur at any time.

While parking and depressing the brakes, the car accelerated like a rocket and jumped over the parking curb onto the road with two way traffic. i had no control over the car. within a few seconds the car flew across the road and hit a fence and was stopped only when it fell into a ditch by the railroad tracks. luckily the car did not turn over. surprisingly, the air bags did not deploy. i kept hitting the breaks and when the car stopped my foot was still on the brake.

My car experienced sudden & strong engine surging - the pedal did not seem to be involved. yet, required driving at slow speeds and the brake had to be applied very strongly to control the speed. it is a 2009 camry, but not on the toyota recall list (this was confirmed w/the toyota dealership). the toyota dealership could not replicate the problem, found no indication of it in the computer/electronic logs in the car. they had their service manager & quality control managers check it. no one can identify the problem. yet, it was real and quite frightening. i am concerned and believe that there are problems other than the gas pedal issue currently being investigated. *tr

Safety hazard!. 2009 toyota camry (likely all hybrid automobiles) will continuously restart the gas engine to recharge the battery if the ignition system is not turned off when departing the vehicle. if the auto is in an attached garage this could result in accidental co poisoning to occupants within the dwelling. i have observed a hybrid continuously restarting while parked in the driveway. this car is usually kept in an attached garage. the owner forgot to turn off the ignition upon leaving the car. this is likely a common event. this will eventually result in seriously injury or death, and may have already happened and not been properly identified and reported. i had reported this safety hazard to the ntsb in mid-2009 with no subsequent ntsb acknowledgement or follow-up. *tr

I have a 2009 toyota camry hybrid. i got an oil change. a day later the dash light came on. i just assumed that they didn't reset my oil change light. i drove it for about two weeks and then took a 300 mile round trip. when i was driving home, i was hearing a knocking noise. i went to the dealership where i purchased the vehicle. they said that the oil filter was not on the vehicle, there was oil under the body of the car and that i would need a new engine due to this one burned up. has anyone ever had an oil filter blown off the vehicle. i'm curious due to the fact that it took two weeks to burn up and oil would have come out faster if the oil filter had been left off from the oil change. *tr

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE

Toyota camry 2009 engine failure due to sludging. my leased 2009 toyota camry (just two year old car) recently had died right ona road while i was driving it to my mechanic. few days before that i noticed a clanking noise coming from under the hood. call my mechanic anf got an appointment. on the day of the appointment noticed clanking noise increase when i started engine. not even 2 miles later my engine -boom!- had thrown rod throught the bottom of the case, making a large hole, spilling oil all over the road. luckily, i was able to drift and pull to the side without causing accident. towed car to the nearest toyota center, where they opened top cover of the engine and right away anounced that engine is gelled and toyota will not cover the repair under waranty because to them the sludge they saw looked like clear case of poor maintenance. even though i carefuly kept and produced all receipts showing that i was changing oil, filter and rotated tires every 5000 miles. my internet research showed that there could be a lot more reasons to sludge buld-up than just poor oil change habit, but as far as i am aware, toyota did not perform any tests or checks on my car. just one look and-voila- they already know that it is my fault. fact that this is my 3-rd back-to-back toyota lease and that i always keep receipts of service does not mean anything to them. $7000-$8000 repair out of my pocket is out of question. i will speak with toyota headquarters in califronia. if this will not reoslve my problem, i will have no choice bu to engage my attroeny and litigate. i also want to open a case and report dangerous situation i was put through due to camry engine failure while driving on a road at 50 mi/h. i could easily be less lucky.

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated the engine is making a knocking sound. when the vehicle is sitting idling the noise gets extremely loud. the contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer several times over the past year and the dealer constantly said the sound was normal. the last time the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, they were told the sound could be heard, but there was nothing that could be done. the failure mileage was 14000 and the current mileage was 25000.rl

After coming to a stop at a traffic light, my car engine sped up, forcing me to press down harder on the brake. the engine continued to increase in speed, and i placed the car into neutral, at which point the engine raced quite high. i turned off the ignition, the engine stopped, and i restarted it a few seconds later without further incident. my foot had not been on the accelerator from the time i stopped at the traffic light until i resumed my travels, after restarting the engine. not sure about the model year; it might have been a 2010 model. i rented the car in las vegas from advantage and have asked for the vin, but have not heard from the company yet. it is their car # 510021.
