 While merging onto i-5 i pushed the resume speed selection on speed control. the car sped up and exceeded the preset speed of 59 mph and reached 80 mph. neither applying the brakes or pushing the speed controls on/off switch turned the speed control off. i turned the key off and on to control the steering and used the parking brake to get the car to the shoulder. this was a very freighting experience so i just sat there for a while. i started the car and the engine a couple times and rpms went to the red line. the floor mat was laying flat and hooked. i looked under hood and nothing looked unusual. i started the engine again and it ran normally. i phoned the dealer's service dept, and they said it was probably the floor mats and a recall notice was in the works. we have driven the car about 5000 miles since incident, but we don't use the speed control. i am scheduled to have the accelerator pedal replaced this week. *tr

 Almost everyone knows that toyota had recalled 4m cars, and one of the cars is the latest model of camry, i own 2009 camry, sent to dealer. they reset the computer, installed a brake override system, inserted a steel bar into the pedal assembly, and cut 1 in. of the plastic shoe pedal and rounded it at the end. now the plastic shoe pedal is not only shorter but also slippery because they rounded it. before modification, the shoe pedal measurement is around 4.5 in x 1.5 in. square with 2 horizontal lines at the end of the shoe pedal. (2 horizontal lines at the bottom prevent foot from slipping and square shape to have enough room for the foot to step on). now, they cut short the shoe pedal, the measurement is 3.5 in x 1.5 in (rounded, eliminated the 2 horizontal lines), it not square anymore. i looked at others cars, honda, nissan, ford, volks, ...none of them have a shorter and rounded shoe pedals...the shoe pedal is design to have a certain length and square at the end. this is not a good call form toyota. this is not a safe. toyota is trying to design it to prevent interfere w/ the mat, unfortunately all they have to do is to make sure that their mat is intact and clip on. i called on the dealer and complained about it...they advised me to call the toyota hotline, which i did. they said they will look into it. i am only one voice. others might not notice it. until it is too late. this is a concern that i think should be looked upon. many lives have been lost already ...we do not want to add more people in the list of deaths or injuries. please hear this message. thank you. *tr

 In san diego earlier this year, at night, to enter heavy ast moving traffic from on ramp floored gas pedal in 2009 toyota camry with new heavy duty floor mats, and had max runaway acceleration. was able to stop with heavy brake pressure, hitting stop engine button didn't work. checked everything i could and tried again, same response, called 911 and got tow truck on the way. finally figured out floor mat had caught gas pedal and was holding it down. pulled floor mat back into place, and then no problem. told 911 as i recall to forget the tow truck. got up to 40- 50 or so mph. haven't reported this to toyota yet. *tr

 To whom it may concern: i bought a 2009 camry le from herb chamber boson in last oct. recently i heard the recall. however, i don't believe the reason for the recall simply blaming the floor mat. i did experience an unintended acceleration when using cruise. the cruise was set at 70 mph and suddenly the speed went up over 85 mph, and i noticed that the acceleration was at its full strength and showed no sign to stop. i immediately braked my car to automatically shut off the cruise control. at that time, i just blamed the stupid computer program, which may account for the incident. however, when reading other person's stories about the recall, i realized that something more serious than the floor mat was actually responsible for those accidents. to tell the truth, i barely use the cruise since that incident. i just want toyota to seriously look into this problem. i will keep a copy of this message here in case i need it in the future. *tr
