I have a toyota camry 2009. my car went through the recall services, toyota had for the acceleration problems through one of their dealers. however, on 02/08/2013, i was involved in an accident, wherein i felt this problem myself. on a busy road i may have been driving between 35-40 mph, when all of a sudden, when i applied brakes, my car wouldn't stop but accelerated to maybe double the speed and hit the car in front of me. it appeared as if there are no brakes in the car.the impact was so severe, that i am still nervous and shaken up with the incident. the person driving the car i hit, thought i was speeding. but it definitely was the acceleration problem. this problem has not yet resolved and could lead to many more accidents. i have reported this problem to toyota dealership and on their suggestion to the toyota customer experience team. i was extremely lucky, that there were no physical injuries in the accident, but it could have been fatal. *tr

At speeds over above 60 mph the car pulls hard to the left.this was reported to the dealer. i had to replace the rear brakes because the right rear brake froze and destroyed the rotor. i had a full brake inspection and was told that they were ok. one week later the front brake locked up on the passenger and went on fire. the dealer tells me the caliper froze. now i have to replace all the pads and rotors on the front end. the is a serious and dangerous problem with this model camry. i have read endless reports of difficulty with controlling this car while braking at highway speeds. this is a braking issue not alignment. *tr

Driving west in a rental car on st. charles rock rd. i changed lanes from the right westbound lane into the l-west lane after checking my mirrors. while i did that i got hit by unseen car (unfamiliar blind spot?) in the rear left, which changed car's heading towards the left (southwest), onto a trajectory crossing the eastbound lanes. i immediately and fully hit the brake pedal but the brakes didn't respond (pedal seemed stuck), and the car continued to move at speed (no acceleration) towards the restaurant on the south side of scrr. i tried to turn wheel to the left to avoid the curb, and perhaps pull a u-turn, but the wheel didn't budge either; all the while i kept pressure on the brake pedal, except for one or two pumping attempts to see if the brakes would kick in, but no noticeable change in pedal response or braking action ensued. the car stayed on the course it got onto by the preceding collision, crossed the eastbound lanes toward the restaurant, jumped the curb, went through a green strip of low (1-2') juniper bushes onto the paved restaurant grounds, and pushed a picnic table into a business sign before coming to a full stop against the building. there was no clear damage to the building itself. i do not recall having turned off the ignition at any time during this incident, either while driving or after i came to a stop. i recall having to restart the car to lower the driver's side door window, because the door itself was blocked by another picnic table. i do not recall anything odd with the ignition key when i restarted (like it was still in the on position). based on the unresponsiveness of both brakes and steering wheel immediately after the collision, it's my impression that there may have been a glitch in the car's electrical/control system. until this accident, the car handled normally; there was no apparent problem with brakes, steering or accelerator. *tr

I have had a 2009 camry hybrid since july 2009 and have noticed- what i would refer to as power surges while braking (sometimes almost lurching forward uncontrollably - i almost rear ended cars in front of me in traffic a few times - especially on bumpy roads i thought it was due to the capturing of too much energy from the regenerative braking system so that it charges the battery while braking. only once i heard people on the radio describing the prius braking problem did i realize it sounds exactly the same! why haven't we heard anything about this for the camry hybrids? i never owned a hybrid previously and although i am unhappy with the braking, i thought it was normal for a hybrid and i just needed to get used to it. i only recently commented on a survey, that toyota sent to me, about it - as i thought it was normal for the hybrid. i have not yet contacted the dealer. *tr

When attempting to brake i have occasionally had my vehicle accelerate instead of stopping. this is extremely frightening and i no longer feel safe in my vehicle, especially in light of recent news reports documenting wide spread defects for my particular model. even when the car does not accelerate while i attempt to brake, there is a delay in the response of the braking system which is a danger in itself. my natural reflex when this happens is to step on the brake peddle with more force and more frequency which, i believe, causes excessive wear and tear on the braking system. braking/engine problem with 2009 toyota camry. *tr

The car is difficult to steer in a straight line at higher speeds (above 50mph). the steering keeps pulling to the left even when the road is banked in the opposite direction. this has been present since new and currently car has 7000 miles. this was pointed out in the1000 mile service and wheel alignment was done by toyota dealership to rectify the issue. however, the problem does not seem to be related to wheel alignment and is present even after the alignment work. at 70mph, the car is difficult to keep in a straight line using both hands on the steering, and a constant corrective effort is required. this makes the car go in a slight zig zag within the lane and does not inspire confidence, and needless to say scares other travelers driving in their own lanes. another issue is very inconsistent braking. this is a camry hybrid and the point of shift between regenerative braking and friction braking is very inconsistent. the regenerative braking feels and to be slow down the car at a slower pace until friction braking comes up and immediately slows the car down. the net result is car does not slow down as it should initially but then doing so very quickly. this is very evident is slow moving traffic. plus, my car seems to have a light screeching noise coming from right brake (not the usual brake noise). this happens only when car is cold, and when not braking. when braking it goes away. it has been present since new and toyota has not been able to replicate or correct it. *tr

My toyota camry hybrid has the exact same going over bumps and pothole problems that is being described for the prius, however, i have not been able to get it addressed. during braking, if the car goes over a non-smooth surface in the road, the car speeds up until all four wheels are on solid ground again, usually a short duration. this is scary and dangerous and i am lucky that i have been able to avoid an accident. this has been a continuous problem that the dealer didn't recognize when i have complained about it. i am entering yesterdays date in the incident date field since this happened to me again last evening.

I own a toyota camry hybrid, 2009. i am also experiencing the same brake failure problems that the toyota 2010 prius is being recalled for. i noticed that when braking on down sloped roads, slippery roads, or bumpy roads, the car seems to accelerate while braking. this occurs for 1-2 seconds. it is a very scary feeling. last week i narrowly avoided hitting 2 cars during a minor snow fall because while making a slow turn or braking the car again accelerated and the braking system failed momentarily. i verbally asked the dealer that i purchased the car from, and my neighborhood dealer 2 weeks ago while making a scheduled 15k mile service visit about the problem, but they weren't aware of it and suggested that it could be the hybrid system kicking in. a few days later i heard of the prius recall and was shocked when i read the reasons behind it. i am now scheduled for a service visit tomorrow at toyota. at my last service visit they said the brakes were in good condition, but i think this is an electrical problem. please investigate the camry hybrids as well. this problems is reproducible and occurs every time that i am on a bumpy road and brake or on a slippery surface and brake. *tw

I have purchase 2009 toyota camry le on august 7, 2009. but my wife was driving when it was involved in an accident on november 18, 2009 due to either the gas pedal stuck or the brakes didn't work properly, that caused a crash to the other car rear. we have taken to don mcgill toyota of katy for repair that cost me $3,850.00 for that damage on the front end. the questions is does my car have same problem that toyota has recalled? *tr

My 2009 toyota camry may have another issue with the brakes. i am not sure if it is related to the other recalls, because i sent an email to toyota on monday and have not yet heard back from them. when i press on the brake pedal, as i am coming to a stop, my brakes appear to stop working and the car will surge forward. this happens a lot (at least once a week) and i thought maybe it was just the toyota as this is the first toyota that i have owned. i think that toyota should have to buy-back these vehicles. my reasons for purchasing the toyota were, safety and resale value. my vehicle is no longer safe and has a highly decreased resale/trade-in value. so, much that i am not even able to trade it in for a safe vehicle. *tr

I was having extreme vibration on my 2009 toyota camry when driving over 65 mph on some state interstates. this happened most noticabley when reaching speeds of over 60 mph, and the tires were litterally skipping off the road when breaking and you would lose control of the vehical, which could lead to a crash cauasing a death. this is on a 2009 toyota camry. this was taken into the dealership several times, and it was finally addressed. i called toyota and they said they did not have a tsb on my situation. they lied. 3. i took the car to the toyota dealership and they found due to defect in materials used by toyota motor corporation, that there was premature warpage on the brake rotors. also the dealership realized toyota put out a tsb -0169-9 on june 4 2009. yet when i called toyota customer care and specifically asked if there was a tsb for brake rotors the cusomer service rep. said no. but this was not presented to me until after my car went over 36k miles. my car has 37.7k miles. yet i took my car in at 35k miles, and this was not fixed under warranty. toyota customer care refused to even address my problem, and told me there were no tsb bulletins out on this and i spoke to chris at toyota customer care, and even when i called in august they told my there were not tsb bulletins. toyota has a serious issues with their brake pads and rotors that can cuase the tires to leave the road when braking. i have also called toyota over a year ago about this and they denied that there was anything wrong. now i have to pay for the repairs because toyota failed to notify me and my dealer.this should be a recall investigation as this can lead to a serious accident and even cause death.

2009 toyota camry. consumer writes regarding vehicle stalling in the acceleration process *tgw the dealer stated the stall in the acceleration, was caused by the sequencing of the transmission. the stall would occur as the consumer made a rapid change from deceleration to acceleration. the consumer was informed the stall was a built in design feature. the consumer stated to minimize the stall, she must manually down shift the transmission whenever the engine is in the deceleration phase. recently, a slow moving 18 wheeler unexpectedly pulled into the consumers lane of traffic, while traveling at highway speeds. the consumer stated her natural reaction was to remove her foot from the accelerator, putting the engine /transmission into deceleration mode. as the situation unfolded, she concluded that the rapid acceleration and lane change was the safest method. when the consumer tried to accelerate around the truck, there was no reaction from the vehicle. the transmission delayed responding and when it did respond, it chose a gear which produced no meaningful forward motion, but lots of noise. consequently, she was forced to brake very hard, but the brakes failed to perform as designed. the next day, the dealer explained there was a factory alert issue on the brake pads. the pads were replaced, and the rotors were turned. *jb

Very soft brakes in 2009 toyota camry. brakes must be pumped to get any real braking action. at times brake pedal will continue to go down when brakes are pressed with no additional braking action. toyota claims brakes to be in spec and working properly, the brakes are functioning as designed. i have had this problem since i got the car, new. and, have felt very unsafe, as i never knew when the brakes would effectively slow the vehicle. even when pushing hard, as in a panic stop, my legs are only so long. toyota changed a valve twice, but are now saying that this was not necessary, the brakes are fine. i have tried to replicate a brake test done by the toyota tech servive rep, but cannot. the test was to press the brake pedal and rev the car up to red line.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) hello, i'm [xxx] from u.s. army. my car, toyota camry 2009, had a same problem with that sudden acceleration back in 2008. the car was, of course, brand new, and i had that same experience - all of sudden acceleration. it was after i was finished the all duties for the day, and i was head to my home. when i just drove on the highway, the rpm went up so quickly and suddenly, and even i stepped on the brakes several times. but the rpm had never been go down and stop. so i made the decision to make the transmission shift to neutral, and it worked at that time. at that time, i was in like country side in fort gordon, georgia, and now i'm in south korea to perform the duty here. at that time of that incident, i thought it could happen maybe one time.. very one time.. however, when i read the current newspaper article.. i feel very terrible about this.. because now my wife and my 3year old son ride in toyota camry.. (that's the only one car in our household).. what if there would be a same happening to my wife and my son.. i was o.k. because the highway i drove on was almost no traffic.. as i mentioned earlier, i lived in country side ft. gordon, georgia.. but after i got the duty station in south korea, i relocated my family back to los angeles county, california.. (that's where i came from) i know my wife once told me.. she felt little bit more acceleration when she drove toward down slope.. she had to do the samething, put the transmission shift to the neutral.. what if this kind of incident would be happened in a heavy traffic.. man.. i wish that i would have a total solution for this.. i know that i can't return the car, right? *tr

I purchased a 2009 camry hybrid this past summer and within a month, noticed problems with occasional braking and acceleration issues. i originally thought that perhaps this was the hybrid technology, but at times i have experienced some near misses and have been very concerned with the recent reports of lost life. i filed a complaint on the toyota.com website on february 9th, 2010 and have received no response since then. i am disappointed that the camry hybrid was not included with the latest prius recall and feel that toyota needs to investigate what i believe to be a software/electronics issue. i have been in software development and sales for the past 15 years and have never been in a car accident since receiving my license. but since purchasing this car, my first toyota, i do not feel as safe as i have in my gm's and ford's over the years. what i am experiencing is a forward lurch when braking from 50 mph to a quick stop/traffic light and the gas engine is engaged. when brake is applied, the car slows, then there is a quick revving of the engine, then an upshift prior to a downshift when the electronics/battery takes over. this has caused some near misses from a rear end collision, as the car appears to stop, but then lurches forward. i have also experienced this forward lurch, when accelerating at higher speeds (30-50 mph)from a stop light, as if there is a delay between the electronics to the gas engine. this has caused the car to accelerate rapidly on occasion, causing me to brake to slow it down. please have this software defect looked into, as i believe this recent recall should include the camry hybrids as well and as soon as possible. *tr

2009 camry i bought a used camry 2009 with 64,000 miles on it. i noticed that while making a turn, both right and left axles were creating sound. then i called toyota's customer relations dept. around nov 11th and reported this matter to them. they gave to me the complaint # 0911116335. they advised me to go to the local dealer. i took the car to the local dealer on dec.3,2009 and a mechanic rode with me in the car and agreed that both axles are bad. i left the car with the dealer to confirm this problem. when i picked up the car, they charged me $ 50.00 for inspection and wrote the report that only left axel was bad. as i have already pointed out, mechanic had already confirmed that both axles were bad. it appears that to 'tone down' this defect, toyota home office advised the dealer to report that only one axel was bad. dealer's estimate for replacing one axel was around $ 900.00 after 10% discount on the parts. i understand that there may be only few 2009 camrys which would have 64,000 miles on them. i request you to register my complaint and look for other 2009 camry users to report this problem. another problem i have noticed is the similar brake problem that toyota has in prius models. when applying brakes on a slippery condition, car does not stop for few feet. please also investigate this matter. *tr

I have a 2009 toyota camry that i purchased from darcars in silver spring, md., at the end of 2008. it is subject to the gas pedal recall and the floor mat recall, but i also have a separate problem. my brakes failed while i was driving to daycare/work on january 27th and i still do not know why. i was driving in downtown washington, d.c., and my brakes did not work when i tried to stop for a red light on 14th street. i managed to avoid smashing into the car in front of me only because i was able to swerve into the oncoming lane, which luckily had no traffic. my car traveled roughly another half block before i was finally able to stop on the side of the road. it was quite scary, in part because i had my one-year-old and my three-year-old in the car with me when it happened. i left work early that day and took the car up to the dealer where i bought it, but they couldn't find anything wrong. at this point, though, i am scared to drive the car - especially with my kids - and i am thinking of selling it as soon as possible. i assume this is unrelated to any of the recent recalls affecting the camry. *tw

I have purchase 2009 toyota camry le on august 7, 2009. but my wife was driving when it was involve in an accident on november 18, 2009 due that either the gas pedal stuck or the brakes didn't work properly, that caused a crash to the other cars rear. we have taken to don mcgill toyota of katy for repair that cost me $3,850.00 for that damage on the front end. the questions is does my car have the same problem that toyota has recalled? i would like to someone give me same answers on it. *tr

I have experienced the same 2010 toyota prius braking issue on my 2009 toyota camry. the toyota prius braking issue is described as the following: momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over uneven road surfaces, potholes or bumps. this is exactly what happened to me in my 2009 toyota camry just a few hours ago. after rolling over a series of bumps at about 45 mph i tried to apply the brake in my 2009 camry and the pedal was very slow to respond and the physical brake pedal itself exhibited great resistance in my effort to press it down into use. this problem occurs only after having traveled over bumps or potholes, etc. the reason i am filing this complaint is that i feel that the prius braking issue is not limited to only the prius model that has been reported on in the new over the past 24 hours. *tr

I live in the chicago area and recently purchased a 2009 toyota camry se with 35k miles on it in nov 2009. in late december i was driving home from work - it was rainy and about 30 degrees outside and the roads were a bit slippery. the car in front of me (far ahead) applied its brakes to make a left turn. i went to apply my brakes to slow down and the car would not stop! i did not feel the brakes apply and slow my vehicle. i pushed down on the brake harder and it did nothing. it was not until i lifted my foot off the brake and reapplied it that the car started to slow. luckily i was not too close to the car in front. the next day, i went to the my local mechanic and paid him to look at my brakes to make sure they were safe. he did not see anything wrong with the pads or rotors. yesterday the same thing happened. the weather was a mix of rain and ice and about 20 degrees. i am not afraid to buy my new car and feel something needs to be done to address this issue. i have read in forums where similar occurrences have happened to camry owners as well. please help! *tr
