AIR BAGS

Passanger's side airbags deployed for no reason while vehicle was in motion. driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, avoiding the very real possibility of personal injury and property damage. driver suffered extreme emotional distress and temporary hearing loss, in additon to damage to interior of vehicle. the vehicle will be sent to the dealer in the am.*ak
AIR BAGS - SIDE/WINDOW
09/05/2005100800102/20/2003
I was driving my car on a straight section of road that was newly graded gravel at about 35 mph when the passenger side air bags deployed. both the side air curtain and the seat air bags went off. the seat bag hit my wife on the back of the upper arm leaving some bruising and what looked to be large welts and burns. the swelling and burns went away after we found some ice and pack her arm in it. vw says that we were in a collision but we were around no one and did not hit anything. there is no damage to my car for any collision. my insurance company fixed the car under a comp. claim as they were unable to find any collision damage. *jb
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - IGNITION
02/12/2007109/13/2003
Three out of four of my ignition coils have blown and i have less then 50,000 miles on my car. the dealership admits there is no reason this should be happening, however i have to keep breaking down and getting my car towed in for it to be covered under warranty. this is outrageous they know they are all bad, but if i ask them to fix them i have to pay for it. this is an ongoing problem with my make/model and year. i have contacted volkswagen directly and they will not do anything about it they say and i quote i'm sorry to hear that i tell everyone how many problems i have had due to this issue and have deterred at least two people that were considering volkswagens to buy different vehicles. its a shame this is my husband and i's second volkswagen but the car has been towed/or broken down 9 times in less then 3 years, that's not good. once this lease is up we will never deal with volkswagen again. they don't want to do anything to help their customers, and that's a shame. i have done research on the coil issue and there are a lot of people who have encountered this same problem, obviously there is a huge defect and a lot of vehicles were affected. *jb
EXTERIOR LIGHTING - BRAKE LIGHTS - SWITCH
02/13/200673305111/16/2001
Jetta brake light switch (on our invoice it is part no. 1jo-945-511-e) according to the service dept at commonwealth vw, this switch has been recalled as defective in other vw's, but not the jetta. when it fails, the brake lights go out and the car will not shift. i bought this car new for my daughter, m. b., the registered owner, and i do not like the idea that she is driving a defective vehicle to and from our home in villa park, ca. to school in riverside, ca. (about 60 miles round trip) daily, and at night! this part should be recalled from all vehicles. *nm
LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES - TRUNK LID - LOCK

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 volkswagen new jetta. while driving in windy conditions, the hinge on the trunk fractured and the trunk opened. when the trunk opened, it slammed into the windshield, and caused it to shatter. the vehicle identification number was unavailable. the failure and current mileages were 70,000.
POWER TRAIN - CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
08/10/200426888212/26/2002
Blown clutch on new 2003 vw jetta tdi 1.8. first occurance in august of 04 with 26,000 miles and again now in may of 05 with 40,500 or 14,000 miles to another blown clutch. i am not a teenage driver, i am 23 with excellent driving skills and have driven clutches all my adult driving life. there is something wrong with their clutch system. i have found tons of evidence in bulletin boards. vw is blaming this on poor driving skills and i believe this is a serious defect that occurs every 20,000 miles. consumers like me are gettign ripped off on this one left and right. you need to do something. this is no isolated incident!

Normal driving conditions clutch burned out at 21,851 miles need to replace clutch
SEATS - FRONT ASSEMBLY - SEAT HEATER/COOLER
12/24/2004110/31/2002
Passenger side seat heater malfunctioned. seat heater turned on to level 3. passenger and driver noticed smell of something burning, then passenger felt pain under left thigh. turned seat heater off. when stopped, examined seat to discover brown hole in seat where heater had burned through. no repairs have been made yet. *nm

I was driving down the road and had just cut on my heated seats in my 2003 volkswagon jetta and noticed that my seat was getting very hot on the left hand side. i could not figure it out and could not see b/c it was dark. i started filling around in my seat and felt a whole and it burned my finger. i had no idea what it was. i started smelling smoke and so i turned on my light in my car and pulled over immediately. my seat started smoking out of the whole. i tried to see closer what was going on and noticed sparks coming out of the whole. the only thing i could think of at that moment was my heated seats. i turned them off and the sparks went away. i now have a whole in my seat the size of a nickel. it is still under warranty and i am taking it in on monday, however after reading many websites about this particular problem in 2002/2003 jetta's i am not so sure that volkswagen will stand behind this problem and that they try and blame it on the driver messing around with the grid which is next to impossible. i am writing in advance and calling as well so it is on file that this happened. i found the coil in the seat that was not protected by anything and looks to be what was causing the sparks in my seat. *jb
