SUSPENSION - REAR
08/02/200416000203/02/2003
2002 yamaha royal star venture, model xv1300. rear suspension failure. rear shock seal failed. shock lost air pressure and oil dumped in path of rear tire. nearly caused loss of control of motorcycle. this is the second failure of the rear shock on this vehicle. many other owners are having similar rear suspension failures.

Battery leakage: after driving motorcycle around oahu for about an hour on 15 aug 02, i stopped for food. upon returning to my motorcycle, i did a quick walk around inspection and noticed a white, crusty spot located on the left top side of the swingarm. upon further inspection, i saw that there was battery acid dripping from the battery box under the seat area. acid was dripping on swingarm, rear suspension spring, battery box, and chain. corrosion on swingarm, spring, or chain could lead to structure failure, resulting in loss of control and an accident. having done further research into this matter, it appears that there are lots of other r6 owners having this same problem. it has been addressed to yamaha by many of them, and yamaha has and hasn't replaced the damaged parts, depending on dealership. apparently, the sealed batteries are faulty, and gas pressure builds up inside of it until it ruptures and leaks battery acid all over. this is a potentially severe issue that must be addressed by nhtsa in order for yamaha to recall all of the affected batteries.

Battery leaked causing swing arm, chain, and shock damage. battery is leaking most likly due to over charging by the motorcycle, creating a fire hazard.
Motorcycle model 650v-star; while driving mortorcycle, a clicking or rattlling sound would come from rear end. this occurred with previous motorcycle which was exchanged for the present one. was urged by dealership not to ride motorcycle until it was repaired. please describe details. *ak
SUSPENSION - REAR - SHOCK ABSORBER
02/21/200410389104/10/2003
The vehicle is an 850# touring motorcycle with air assisted suspension system. motorcycle's rear air-shock seal failed. dampening oil leaked out (onto garage floor). motorcycle's driveablity and handling was affected and the vehicle became very unstable on bumps and in turns. i nearly lost control when driving the bike to dealer to have the shock replaced. i believe the poor design of the shock has not been improved, as many owners have had them fail and replaced 2 or 3 times (as is documented in a yamaha venture owner's organization). the failure of the rear shock is an epidemic amongst 1999 ~ 2004 yamaha royal star venture's. it's a matter of time before someone is injured. the motorcycle's shock ablsorber assembly contains the rear spring and is an integral part of the suspension. the model of motorcycle is not listed in the nhtsa database. it is a 2002 xvz13 yamaha royal star venture. *ak

Rear shock failed on my 2002 yamaha royal star midnight venture. caused very poor and unsafe handling characteristics including bottoming out and unstable cornering. it appears that this problem is fairly common with this model and yamaha is replacing with the same faulty designed rear shock.*ak
