Some friends borrowed my 2000 chevy silverado to haul some sheet rock headed down to hardware store and ended up calling me with a smoking engine told them to bring it back to the house. my buddy said the brakes didn't stop all that good on the way over and went right to the floor looking under the hood i had him push the brakes and fluid shot out of the break lines running along the body frame they look all corroded in one location and one of them burst. we are fortunate the only ran to the hardware store and not on the highway it could of ended very badly.

The brake line running from the abs module to the front passenger wheel corroded to the point of leaking brake fluid. the brake warning light came on. the truck was then parked until it could be serviced. all brake lines were found to be severely rusted & corroded. a second line (from the abs module to the rear axle) disintegrated upon removal. the worst corrosion was at the points where the brake lines were clipped into the plastic brackets. *tr

While driving on the nj turnpike my brakes failed. i had my 12 year old son with me, so you can imagine my fear. i was traveling about 35 miles per hour. luckily i was approaching the rest area and was able to use the service road to slow myself down. i had to have the truck towed to my mechanic. he replaced the brake line( at my expense)and when he showed me the broken line i could not believe how rusted it was. this was in 2011. the following year (2012) the same thing happened. while traveling in town the brakes failed. i brought it to my mechanic and he pointed out how rusted all the brake lines were and how dangerous the vehicle was. i had to replace all the brake lines. this was an expense that was not anticipated when purchasing an american made chevy truck. very disappointing. upon investigating this situation i have come to realize that it is a defect with the chevy vehicles. chevy should make this right. i was lucky enough not to have had a crash, the thought of what could have happened is very disturbing. *tr

On 9/18/12 i was traveling in rush hour traffic on rt 29n in columbia md when traffic slowed and then stopped. i stepped on the brakes of my 2000 chevy silverado 1500. the vehicle slowed somewhat but then the brake pedal went to the floor and i couldn't stop. i rear ended an unmarked police vehicle at approx 20-25mph. my truck suffered frt bumper damage as well as the back window blowing out. the police car suffered rear bumper damage. the officer stated that he was ok from the crash. i also suffered not injuries. i was able to get the truck out of the traffic lanes and opened the hood to check the brake fluid. the master cylinder was empty. i had the truck towed to my local chevy dealer for inspection. my insurance company came out to inspect the damages. the auto adjuster stated that the brake lines had rusted through causing all the brake fluid to leave the system. my insurance company says the brake lines are a wear item and are not covered but the damage to the truck from the accident will be covered. gm says that they will not cover the brake lines and that there is no recall on the lines. i am having the brake lines replaced with stainless steel brake lines to stop this from ever happening again at considerable cost to me. after reading up on the subject it appears gm knows about this problem but won't do anything about it. i could have killed/injured someone due to these faulty brake lines. *tr

While driving at 45 mph, my brake light came on. i immediately started to pull over and noticed that i felt less pressure on brake pedal. i was able stop the vehicle, but notice no puddles. resumed drive home. check fluid reservoir, fluid almost gone. filled reservoir and pumped brakes back up. noticed some drips in driveway. also noticed slight gas smell. took vehicle to mechanic and he determined that not only was the brake line rotted, the gas lines were rotting out as well. the areas that were rotted the most is right where the support brackets are. these were underneath driver side door, headed up into engine compartment. lines were replaced with stainless steel lines to prevent from happening further. *tr

For about 4 months we have been having a problem with this truck stopping at low speeds. it seems like the antilock brake kicks in, but the pavement is dry and the truck just keeps going, the brake pedal goes down and you pray that you will stop before you hit something or someone! after this happened to us 3 or 4 times we learned to be very cautious on the road and slowed way down before coming to a stop so we would be able to stop, just in case this were to occur. (it did not always happen, only when it felt like it) however, were always wondered what would happen if we had to stop all of a sudden for an emergency. lucky that never happened. the last time my wife came in the driveway and came within inches of hitting our garage door, that was it! the truck has been parked for the past 2 months. we are afraid to drive it. about 1 1/2 weeks ago my wife typed in 2000 silverado brake problems on the computer and we were amazed to pull up 59 pages of complaints from consumers with similiar problems of 1999 to 2006 silverado and gmc sierra which are being investigated by your office already. that is when we put 2 and 2 together with the complaints of the brakelines rupturing upon quick heavy braking, as was in many complaints also, that may have been the reason that our son had the accident with this truck in sept. of 2010. he was driving in very heavy traffic on the interstate in a construction zone, crawling along, when someone had pulled in front of him and he had to slam on his brake - his brakes failed because of the line bursting and he hit an expensive traffice info sign and did $4000 damage to our truck. he chose to go for the sign instead of into another vehicle and probably killing someone. then we called our chev. dealer, $110 to diagnose, then gm and they refuse to help us until we take it in and pay for a diagnosis.

Approaching a stop light as it turned yellow i applied the brake and felt the brake pedal go to the floor. there was not brakes, after pumping the brakes i did slow down, but i proceeded through the light (which was red now.) with my yellow flashing light on. i then proceeded to the next safe zone to pull over and assess the brakes. found a broken brake line under driver seat on top of fram rail.

My 2000 chevy silverado abs is being activated at low speeds when slowing down to a stop and it is also being activated when coming to a slow turn into a parking spot. this is very dangerous as i have had several close calls of almost crashing into buildings or other vehicles as this problem is causing brake failure! i experienced pressure and slight jerking then complete failure as the brake hit the floor causing complete loss of control! i have had 2 separate mechanics diagnose this problem and both do not find anything mechanically wrong with it and no dash sensors indicated or error codes found. one mechanic checked the wheel speed sensors and no error. i have paid to have my brakes and wheel bearings replaced and this did not fix the issue and it was expensive. i am frustrated and began searching recall notices & found that other people have this same issue and chevy issued a recall notice #05068 in: iowa, minnesota, michigan, missouri, new hampshire, ohio, etc. the salt belt, the problem on top of brake failure is that i reside in south dakota! and i am not included in this recall of my surrounding states. now i have just gotten off the phone with chevy at their 800 number, and was told no recall listed for my vin# & most likely i will pay for repairs of their defective vehicle.

My wife was picking me up and the brake light came on. when we got home i noticed the brake fluid was low so i filled it and the light went off. the brake pedal was still spongy so i got underneath the truck and had her push the brake pedal. i saw brake fluid squirt out of a metal brake line that is corroded on the drivers side rear wheel.

Just bought this truck used less than a month ago, and it passed nys inspection with no problems (94,000 mi. on it). was driving in a parking lot and stoped to back into a space when the brakes went all the way to the floor. parked the truck and opened the hood to verify fluid in the master (ok) then looked under the truck and found a small (but growing) puddle of brake fluid. was able to nurse it home (low speeds, ebrake) and jack it up to find the leak. the leak is one of the 4 lines above the frame near the antilock control. to my supprise all 4 lines are very rusty and all will need to be replaced. this will be a major cost but more importantly this is a big safety issue. the lines look ok everywhere else except for this 2 foot section where they are bundled and ride on top of the frame. i am glad this didn't happen at speed or in an emergancy braking situation but it might have.

When driving the abs and brake warning lights will light up. took truck to a local mechanic and he put it on a computer and the computer gave a code that a relay is bad which is built onto the trucks main computer board. no way to replace it except to replace the computer which is very expensive and the dealership has to reprogram it. mechanic told me that when abs and brake lights come on that your abs brakes will be disabled. talked to a local chevrolet dealership to see if there may have been a recall on this particular matter. they told me no. no recalls will be issued unless it is a safety issue which more than one vehicle have been reported with the same problem. i have did a lot of searching and talked to many mechanics and they have came across many silverado and tahoe vehicles having this same issue. to me it is a safety concern because part of your brake function is enabled.

The first time i experienced catastrophic brake failure i was traveling at a slow rate of speed in my condominium parking lot. the brake pedal went to the floor and i had no brakes. the repair was done at my independent garage where i havea been dealing since 1983. i was told that the brake lines had rotted out. they replaced 10 feet of brake line. the second time i experience catastropich brake failure was yesterday, september 4 while approachin a traffic light about 6:30 pm. fortunately the traffic was light on the early sunday evening of the labor day holiday weekend. by downshifting the authomatic transmission to 2nd and then 1st gear i was able to make the right-hand turn at the intersection onto the berm of the road. earlier that day i had come down the blue mountain at sterret's gap in pennsylvania. had the failure occurred then i wouldn't be able to report it. within the past two weeks i have towed my boat on lthe pa turnpike with the truck. god knows how many people would have died had the failure occurred then. fortunately no pedestrian was crossing the street when the brake failure occurred - they would be dead! there are repeated reports on the internet of catastrophic brake failures on these trucks due to brake line corrosion/rot. it is time you folks act. my next steps are: contact my representative, senators, and an attorney.
