In rainy, wet or snowy weather the brakes on my 1996 chevrolet blazer fail to work. when i put my foot on the brake pedal it is very stiff and it feels like the brakes aren't going to work at all. then finally the vehicle does stop but it takes a very long time to happen. also in other times with the same weather conditions the brakes will be very touchy. so much so that when i put my foot on the brake it jerks me forward and stops very abruptly.

Applied brakes while two car lengths behind another car in traffic on freeway, going about 25 mph. brake pedal went to floor, car did not stop until it hit car in front of us. while braking on wet pavement, or rr tracks, or uneven pavement the abs fails and pedal goes to floor. at my expense i took car to gmc dealership to check brakes. i was told car had no open recalls. they looked at abs and said there were no errors coming up. gmc said brake pads were worn - they were replaced 6 months ago, and then again about 30 days prior to accident. mechanic took us on test drive over uneven pavement, we tried to brake, and abs went to floor, stopping was extremely delayed. we were told that was normal. he also said that if we had gmc brake pads then we would have been able to stop better. opened call with gmc and was told that due to mileage of car there was nothing they could do. how can a car be considered safe to drive if the brakes don't work? gmc recall 99i006000 describes this exact problem we experienced. i was told my car had this recall performed. i will take car to 3rd party for opinion, and then will seek legal representation. car will sit in garage until then. it's too unsafe to drive. *la

I was on my way to my sister's house, i came up to a stop sign, and the brakes went to the floor and the vehicle would not stop. i tried pumping the brakes, but nothing, so i tried holding them to the floor and still nothing. the road dead ended and i had to turn the vehicle, at which time i lost control of the vehicle, and it went in the ditch and rolled on it's side. the brakes worked up til this point, i had made 5 stops prior to this one. there were no skid marks, because there were no brakes. when the vehicle was pulled out of the ditch, and the brakes were tested, they seemed to work again. i was very lucky, i found out later, that my boyfriend had driven the car, earlier that month and the brakes had done the same thing to him, he checked the brake pads, but there was nothing wrong with them, and the brakes seemed to work after that. i have talked to several people and found out this problem has happened to a lot of people. i have talked to a person, who had worked for gm for over 20 years and he knew about this problem, and told me they never did a recall, but there were a lot of people who brought their cars in for this same problem, the brakes would randomly fail. i can not believe a recall has not been done, i was very lucky, someone else may not be. dt

Brakes failed/skipped when i tried to slow down to exit off major highway. i was going below the speed limit which was 55 mph, i was going 50 mph. as i proceeded to slow down to exit off the highway. i pressed the brakes, the brakes skipped and the car began to spin 1-2 times. then proceeded to flip over four times. no fatalities, but driver who was myself was seriously injured and required left arm and hand surgery due to degloving of hand and lacerated triceps and serious glass damage. the car was totalled out. driver side roof was caved in and passenger side roof was completely caved in. brakes seemed like they tried to grasp the tires failed to do so therefore skipping and causing the car to go out of control. dt

First problem occurred jan 97 while driving in reno nevada it began to snow lightly and four wheel drive was engaged but this driver could not feel or sense a change in traction. the braking system did not adjust to changing weather conditions and we eventually skidded off the road as conditions worsened and another vehicle rear ended me. i suffered right rotator cuff tear and had a disc removed from my neck. my passanger has had two back surgeries due to disc injuries. on at least two other ocasions the brakes nearly caused me to rear end someone because of a slow responce.

I have had two major problems with this vehicle since it's purchase date. the transmission has experienced two major failures and the dealer said he replaced them both times. i have continued to experience shifting problems and occassional lockup of the transmission when shifting from park to drive. the transmission dip stick and filler tube have had to be replaced twice for rust which leads me to believe that engine cooolant is getting into the transmission fluid. the second problem is naturally the abs brake system. this is the sorriest excuse for brakes on a vehicle that i have seen. i must almost stand on the brake pedal with excessive pressure to get the vehicle to stop. i also experienced premature brake pad wear out on the front which damage the rotors. chevrolet refused to fix this under warranty even though the vehicle only had 20,000 miles on it. the abs system locks up sometimes when i push hard on the brakes. i have experienced several near accidents because of the poor braking system on this vehicle. i would appreciate any help you could be to leverage chevrolet to correct these problems.

On 7/27 going down a grade and around curve - (10-15 mph) oncoming vehicle was on my side of the road. i blew the horn and with full force slammed on the brakes. my blazer brakes made a rumbling sensation at the brake pedal and slid 10-15 feet before finally stopping. i almost hit the left rear fender of the truck with the front left fender of my vehicle. on 2/99 i encountered the same braking problem which resulted in a 3 car accident ($12,000) worth of damage.
02/04/1999208/01/1996
Was traveling on the ramp to route 28 and applied brakes - two cars were awaiting entrance to highway and they stopped at the end of the ramp. i applied brakes with a good 20-25 ft distance between my vehicle and the car in front of me (at speed of approx. 15 mph) and vehicle brakes made rumbling sound, vehicle slide on road surface and failed to stop causing rear end collision to 2 cars in front of mine. when applying the brakes - fully depressed to the floor - brakes rumbled, seemed to lock and car seemed to slide, and veer to the right but did not stop. i mentioned to officer m. bowser, state police, that there was a problem with the brakes. i received a citation for careless driving although i tried to stop the vehicle) - was advised one should have control of vehicle at all times regardless of situation. also received 3 points.

The abs system makes a loud groaning noise when having to stop on any surface with loose stones, wet surface or anything which allows the vehicle to slide. the noise sounds like the mooing of a cow. when this occurs, the system allows the vehicle to free wheel for a matter of a seconds before the abs system starts to pulsate under your foot. in the time before the pusating starts, the vehicle is on the steepest part of the hill and due to the heaviness of the vehicle it manages to pick up a great deal of speed. the vehicle stops, but unfortunately on many occasions i end up in the middle of the intersection. as i live in a rural area dominated by large steep hills, this causes quite a problem. i live at the top of a large hill causing me to travel this decline every day and sometimes more than once a day. the steepest part of the hill is the lowest portion at the bottom of which is a stop sign. there is usually loose fine stones on the hill causing the vehicle to slide as you are constantly braking . as soon as the wheels slide, the abs system kicks in. i have had the car back to the dealer on at least four, maybe 5 occasions. the last time, the dealer kept it a whole day to evaluate it, reporting back to me that the loud mooing sound is the abs pump. my husband took the service manager for a ride to the area in which we live, showing him the reaction of the abs system, at which time the dealer decided to keep it for the day to evaluate it. the dealership reported that it functions the way it was designed and they will not do anything to correct the problem because right now it is chevy's problem. if the dealership would do anything to correct it, it would become their problem. i have had far too many close calls, the most recent occurring this week at the bottom of the hill close to our home. there are leaves on the roadway which caused a wheel to slide which kicked in the abs system on the steepest portion allowing me to end up over half way

Purchased vehicle 12/03 since then have replaced: water pump 3 times, radiator, thermostat, left upper ball joint, upper manifold gasket, main real seal. over the past 6-8 months i have noticed the braking issue several times (more than 10.) luckily none were emergency stops, however when braking due to traffic light change or stopping while going downhill, the brakes chatter, an audible whine is produced, and it is necessary to pump the brakes before it will regain pressure and stop. *jb

Brake failure. brake work done several times including recall of abs. which is not included in repair cost. the vehicle was involved in an accident on july 9 2002. the brakes failed without warning at slow speed on surface street resulting in a three car collision one vehicle was totaled. accident costs not included. minor injury to drivers of two of the vehicles. contacted gm and was told that recall work had been done and so would not take any responsiblily etc. vehicle has been parked since as unable to verify what actual problem is. brakes failed again when the autobody repair shop took it in for brake check prior to returning to us.

I was just involved in "rear-ender" in which i could not get my blazer to stop. the vehicle in front of me suddenly stopped to turn left. that seemed okay because i knew i had plenty of time to stop. however, as i was applying the brakes, it felt like the abs was releasing the brakes causing my blazer to roll right into the rear the explorer in front of me. this is extrememly frustrating because i had my vehicle in for an abs recall earlier this year.

On friday october 20, 2006. my son and 3 friends were leaving a friends house. when my son applied his brake to slow, the brakes failed. when they failed the engine revved completely up, throttled out and shut down the vehicle. he of course had no brakes, but now no steering, and the engine was off. not having any control, the vehicle hit a loose rock, slid into a ditch which then sent them into a series of rollovers no less than 5 no more then 7. the airbags did not deploy. when they landed 3 of the 4 doors were jammed shut. as they climb out of the vehicle, they noticed it was burning. it burned from behind the dash through the engine. i have pictures if you would like to see. the worst injury at the time was my son's shoulder, they were concerned it had a worse tear. nothing can be done to fix this vehicle. i have notified chevy and gm. i am also talking to an attorney next week. the service brake hydraulic antilock recall has caused me concern. we don't know if it was ever taken for it's repair. now gm can't even find or trace yet the vin number. he had only had it 2 weeks when we had to put it in the shop because it had to be jumped to start. then a week and a half almost 2 weeks later the brakes go out. something major went wrong, and he hadn't even had it 30 days yet. it could have killed 4 kids. i want to know what malfunctioned.

Dt: the contact owns a 1996 chevrolet blazer. there were problems with the abs system. a loud squeaking noise came from the brakes , and when the brake pedal was pressed the noise became louder. there was extended stopping distance that was caused by the abs. also, the abs light illuminated until the back brake pads and cylinders were replaced. this remedied the abs light from being illuminated, but the consumer was still hearing the loud squeaking noise, and was still having extended stopping distances. while the brakes were being repaired the second time the brake specialist referred him to general motors for the brake problem. there is recall 99i006000 safety improvement campaign for this year, make, and model of vehicle, for the service brakes, hydraulic: anti lock brakes. however, this vehicle is not included due to vin. *ak

The abs brake system had failed without any warninig or indecation, i had my mechanic check the system out and he foun tha the abs pump was malfunctioning. but it did not produce a fault code to the computer nor did the dash light come on. he also checked with other meckanic in the area and they also have had the same reports from their customers about the brakes failing. the quick fix is to disable the abs system and run the brakes in the manual mode. there seems to be a problem with (96-97 ) systems. the repair cost for abs range from 900.00 to 1500.00 dolllars to fix. at that price there probably a lot of people riding arounrd with the abs system desabled. i think this should have a top priority to be checked out. had i needed the brakes in a real emergency or panic stop i don't think i would be writing this letter. thank you for yor time in this matter john t nuttall 24 b street lowell,ma. 01851. *ak

Vehicle was put in for recall on abs system. a short time later, the abs light came on again. was returned to the dealer and was checked again. some time later the light was going on again and was brought back to the dealer. they hoocked it up to the computer and they said there were at least 10 different codes in the system and they would need to start with the first thing and work through to find out the problem. the light seems to go on when the truck is in reverse and when you step on the brake hard at 5 mph then put it in drive it seems to go out. is there a way that this can be checked out without the truck being taken for a week or is it the whole computer system that is faulty?*ak

In approximately, july, 2000, (unfortunately, i cannot remember the exact date) the anti-lock brake light came on on the said vehicle. i checked the websites for both chevrolet and nhtsa to see if any recalls had been called. on the website it stated that there had been for 1991-1996. when i contacted chevrolet via telephone, they denied that this information was on their website and stated that it was only up to the year 1995. they stated that they would have to have a certain amount of complaints before a recall could be made on a certain vehicle year. i stated my frustration with the represenative and told her that i would make every attempt to receive what i felt i was due. after several calls and headaches, they finally sent a recall notice. i took the vehicle to gibson chevrolet in south holland, illinois who replaced a switch and said they were done. when i began to leave, i noticed that the anti-lock light was still on. i went back into the service department and told them that the light was still on and the gentleman stated that what they had repaired would not prevent the light from being on. after several conversational circles, i questioned whether or not the vehicles anti-lock braking system was operational and i was told no we could run a diagnostic check , but you would have to pay for it. now, it was around the same time that i reported that my light had come on when the braking system failed. in addition to that i had approximately 7 brake pad changes in a period of 16 months at a local repair shop. my concern is that if the light came on at the time recalls were being made, why does this vehicle not qualify for not only the switch to be repaired but for the entire system. at this time, i am extremely concerned that since the anti-locks are non-functional and the pads continue to wear, that i may be in danger. they show minimal concern to the welfare of their clients. i feel robbed as well as cheated. please help me.*ak

Three accidents have occurred in which braking was a factor. one crash involved a slow-speed, rear-end collision where the brakes were applied, the anti-lock system was activated but the stopping distance was extensive. the second crash involved wet, slick pavement and when brakes were applied, the anti-locks activated, inability to steer and a spinout occurred. in the third accident, pavement was wet, slushy in areas. at an approximate speed of 25 mph, brakes were applied at a yield intersection. the anti-lock brakes activated, the ability to steer the vehicle was lost and stopping distance was excessive, causing a crash with a vehicle in the intersection. in the third crash (3-05-99), this inability to stop/steer was reported in writing to our insurance carrier (usaa) and also to the gm bodyshop who repaired the vehicle. a verbal complaint was made to nick hopson at audette cadillac about the brakes and a request to check the brakes was made. the response was that if there had been any problem with the brakes the vehicle's onboard computer would have notified the driver and there was nothing to indicate a problem with them. over the course of these incidents, the personal distress and expense has been excrutiating. we have not been formally notified of the recall as yet and are extremely concerned about the safety of this vehicle.

Brakes on this vehicle have been questionable since i purchased it. i reported the problem to the dealer two days after purchase and was told that was just the way the brakes were. i have had several instances where the abs have either locked up or failed to work at all. the abs will engage on dry roads at slow speeds. brakes will fade when coming to a slow stop. travel on brakes pedal is such that when the vehicle is at a stop, you can not fit anything under the pedal, it is all the way to the floor. i was also told, this is just the way the truck is. brakes had to be replaced at 17,000 miles, and was told by gm that they know there is a brake problem, but it is a quality issue, not a safety issue and warranty would only cover it up to 15,000 miles. if i had bought a jimmy, the warranty would have covered the brakes up to 20,000. is this because i didn't pay enough for the blazer? my safety is not as important as those people that paid more for their vehicle? i don't tend to agree with that line of thinking. *ak

I had to replace the front brakes and get new rotors after 30,000 miles. brakes are very loose, takes a lot of pressure to get them to stop. dealer said my brakes were worn out, and needed to be replaced just 15k miles after the first service. anti-lock feature kicks in when i drive over potholes or ice, and did not use the brakes. also, windshield wiper problem. wipers stop working intermittently. dealer replaced the motor. dealer said motor had shorted out, but the problem started to occur again. when the wipers stop and later start, after manipulating the controls, the overhead digital temperature guage turns off and on. power window stuck in down position. has been replaced twice. these three electrical problems (wiper, window, digital guage) seem related as they all cause a battery drain as indicated through the volt meter. battery went dead after 6 hour road trip. approx 50k miles on vehicle at time. had been running the a/c the whole time, which seemed to drain battery. *ak

I chose a chevy blazer because i know that chevy is known for the quality of their trucks. unfortunately i couldn't be any more disappointed with my purchase and also with my dealer. ever since i owned my 1996 chevy blazer i've had problems with it and the dealership has continued to take advantage as me as a customer. i can't believe how unprofessional a dealership can be and also how a new vehicle can be so unreliable. the 4th day i had this truck 4 -wheel drive went out, i took it to william chevrolet and they took 2 weeks to fix it, not only that, but they told me to rent a car knowing that i was under 25, instead of lending me a replacement car. in last 3 years the brakes have gone out on me 8 times, and the dealership wouldn't once cover it. my wiper motor went out just before the wiper piece recall went out, i paid for them to fix it, and give me a new motor. but then, when i went to the dealership with the recall they wouldn't reimburse me for the motor just the piece. i don't understand if that piece caused my wiper motor to go out that why do i have to pay for it? my heater is now not working to it's fullest and it's the middle of winter. we just got 21 inches of snow and my 4 wheel drive is not working again. i was unaware that my 4 wheel drive was not working 2 days ago, i turned onto indianapolis blvd, and my blazer did a 360 in the middle of a busy intersection, almost causing a 4 car accident. after that i checked to see if my front wheel were moving, and ofcourse they weren't, therefore i only have rear wheel drive on a $25,000 4x4. the last 2 days have been hell, first i could not get my truck out of its parking spot after i'd shoveled for an hour, after i finally got it out, it got stuck in the snow about 7 times, while 1989 escorts are driving around effortlessly. it's so ridiculous, i have to be afraid to take my truck around the block because it gets stuck in an inch of snow. i'm sitting here now because my vehicle can't get me to work.

This blazer has offered nothing but problems. we have replaced the alternator, brake pads three times, the battery three times, the air conditioner went out in july, 1999, and even after having it repaired twice, it still doesn't work. we took it to the dealership for repair because of a gurgling noise, but they couldn't find what was causing it, (it was still under warranty at that time). now gas fumes flood into the vehicle at various times, after filling up, and even while driving. they claim that a $1,000.00 valve needs to be replaced, but i sure wish they had known that while the warranty was still good! the wipers work sometimes, the brakes allow me to slide to a stop any time there is moisture, the left radio speakers only work sometimes, dome light cover falls off, hood won't open without force, pwr. windows only work when they want to, locks stopped working before warranty expired, and they fixed them, but they still didn't work. is there any way they will take this lousy excuse for a vehicle back? i can't afford to drive my children around in something that offers the possibility of explosion due to gas leakage, not to mention that the smell and fumes make us all nautious. i wonder how many more problems we will have with it, the transmission now seems to be slipping. please help!!*ak

*ak
