| For no apparent reason, the car was driving fine one moment and then there was no drive in any gear. total cost for towing and repair was $3086. transmission shop said reason for failure was failed torque converter. transmission was rebuilt due to overheating. transmission cooler was full of torque converter clutch material. i have found 113 incidents of dangerous torque converter failure related complaints in this national highway transportation safety administration (nhsta) database from 1994 through 2005. for a complete discussion see http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/82-maintenance-repair/168651-2000-taurus-wont-shift-into-any-gear.html . these torque converter failures and their related torque converter pump shaft failures create extreme financial hardship on the taurus owners. additionally the failures occur without any warning whatsoever and thus present a hidden danger to all persons inside the vehicle and other drivers on the road. based on information found in the daaco transmission parts catelog (daacoinc.com), ford torque converters from the 4f50n, axod, axode, and ax4s transmissions seem to be of similar design. nhtsa campaign id number 12v006000 has already forced a recall for the torque converter used in the 4f50n transmission. see http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallresults.cfm?start=1&searchtype=quicksearch&rcl_id=12v006000&summary=true&prod_id=203181&printversion=yes why is nothing being done about this? | |||

| Driving at 65mph with the cruise on. the rpm's goes to 6000 with no warning and no lights on the dash. i turn the cruise off and the rpm's drop. i now start to accelerate and the rpm's just go up and the car doesn't move forward. i just get the car off the roadway before i am rearended thank god. once on the shoulder of the roadway i try all gears with nothing but high rpm's. i sit on the side of the roadway for 1 hour with 18 wheelers going by just inches from me until a tow truck arrives. i did a search on google about this vehicle and there are many let me repeat many folks that have had the same problem. this vehicle only has 47,000 miles and is very well maintained | |||

| My 2000 ford taurus transmission is not working. the car only has 45,567 miles on it, and are the original ones as checked by car facts. one day as i was driving down a major highway in atlanta, georgia my vehicle stopped in the middle of ongoing traffic. if i didn't turn on my hazard lights and lift the front hood on my vehicle, i could have been hit, injured or killed. i have heard numerous people stating that their ford taurus has transmission problems. so, why has the manufacturer not recalled this car? the only warning i had was the day before when fluid leaked from under the car hood. i am very upset because i always get my vehicle maintenance and get oil changes every 3,000 miles. *tr | |||

| Transmission problem: i have had my 2000 ford taurus for only 3 years and the car's transmission is no good! the exact mileage on the odometer reads 48,143 miles. i feel that i have been sold a lemon. my husband was driving our car on 10/7/07 while on our trip to atlanta, georgia and the car broke down in the middle of a major highway - jimmy carter boulevard. his life was in danger because another passenger's car almost crashed into the back of our vehicle. the car was running and suddenly stopped. the car note will not be paid off until december '2008. i feel that there definitely needs to be a safety recall on this particular ford model car. i feel that i will need to make a television appearance on consumer report and make the public aware of this problem. *tr | |||

| Noticed within last 2000 miles that the transmission would slip and jerk when driving up steep grades or sharp turns, when it would attempt to downshift from 3rd to 2nd. it failed completely last night while driving home, fortunately we were only 3 miles from our home. now it will only go 25 mph and has a burning odor. it has 103k miles and the auto trans was serviced (filter/fluid changed) every 35k miles. we will get an estimate for the repair/replacement, however i suspect a bill from $1500-2200 is in order. all the news i heard about ford automatics is now substantiated....this is the last ford for us period. *nm | |||

| I was driving my 2000 ford taurus se home. at the intersection of columbia and meridian roads south of meridian, idaho i pulled out from columbia and turned north onto a busy meridian road. i heard a clunk and i thought the car had popped out of gear. i coasted to the side of the road and found the car would not go in any gear except reverse. i felt fortunate that i was not rear ended because of the amount of traffic that day. i had the taurus towed to aamco transmission. their diagnosis was transmission failure and i had them repair the transmission which included a rebuilt torque converter, new bands, sprag clutch/low clutch, rear sun gear & drum, boost valve, pressure control solenoid, assembly set, filter and fluids. the milage at the time of the failure was 61,841 and the bill came to $2,162.90 less $100 because i had a coupon. my car has the axod type transmission. ford has a 36,000 mile warranty so this was not covered however i think this was much to soon for a transmission to fail. i had the transmission serviced before the recommended specifications. thank you, jon. *ak | |||

| My 2000 ford taurus was out of warranty (53,000 miles) when the transmission and torque converter had to be replaced. i wrote to william clay ford, jr. office and was told in a nice way too bad so sad it's out of warranty. and people wonder why its so difficult to stay loyal to american products? the foreign vehicles are warranted 5-10 years, we must know ours are only good for 3 years and only warranty them for 3 years. i had hoped to get at least 1/2 of my $2,000 bill reimbursed. no chance of that. between what i owe and just put into the car, i'm in a no win situation. in one year this new transmission will be out of warranty. do i dare keep the junker ford? *la | |||

| Purchased a 2000 ford taurus in 2001 with 22,479 miles, now has approximately 43,000 miles. on sept. 27th, when wife of the i was backing up out of a parking space the steering wheel began to vibrate and stopped backing up. it took about three attempts for the car to reverse successfully. i took the car to the dealer and concluded that the damage was caused by the o-ring seal when inspected; in addition, the dealer found damage on rear piston, torque converter, and four other parts of the vehicle. i am seeking reimbursement from ford motor company for the replacement and/or repairs of the damaged components of the vehicle. *la | |||

| My 2000 taurus required a major repair before it was 2 yrs. old. the trans. had to be overhauled. the torque converter could not stand the heat per the repair person. ford co. was contacted but refused to reimburse me for $1,985. their reason was because i did not choose to have the work done at a ford shop. the ford quote was $1,000 higher than a non-ford shop. since when should a customer be punished for mitigating damages? i did have a ford shop analyze the problem initially, but at that time had no assurance that ford would reimburse me, so why should i sign up to pay ford's high repair costs? the aluminum parts being used in the trans. can't stand heat and therefore fail. ford needs to admit poor quality and recall them. *jb ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****770821*** | |||

| Combination metal/rubber transmission cooling lines rotted out spraying hot transmisiion fluid through out the engine compartment and onto the hot engine. this failure on my 2000 ford taurus wagon with 77,000 miles was a complete surprise as my previous car was a 1992 ford sable wagon that i sold with 395,000 miles on it and all the major oriiginal components in good working order. i just realized what the difference was. the 1992 sable transmission cooling lines were all steel, not a combination of steel/rubber as in my 2000. the quality has been lowered to save money. fortunately, i was near my repair shop when the transmission started to die from the loss of fluid and the smoke started coming out from the fluid on the hot engine and exhaust. a little earlier and the car could have died on me in fast moving heavy rush hour traffic on on i-684. the rotten lines were subsequently replaced at a cost approaching $400 for parts/labor. it took 6-quarts of transmission fluid to replace what was blown out! *ak | |||
