FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - DELIVERY - FUEL PUMP
PE07013GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/12/200707/10/2007FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
Odi has received reports that the fuel pump module leaks fuel and or vapor underneath the vehicle.gm states, the failure mechanism is corrosion of the fuel pump module flange which may lead to a fuel leak.corrosion of the fuel pump module flange is the result of the vehicle operating in a corrosive environment.odi has upgraded this pe to engineering analysis (ea07-009) to further assess this issue.
EA07009GENERAL MOTORS CORP.07/10/200708/28/2008FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
During the course of this ea investigation, odi observed that the majority of the complaints (88%) and warranty claims (94%) were reported for vehicles that are registered for use in the salt belt region of the us.this area includes 20 states in the northeast, mid atlantic and the midwest regions and the district of columbia.consumers in the salt belt region reported to odi that they could smell fuel vapors in their vehicles while driving.upon further examination of their vehicles, they discovered that fuel vapors were coming out of the top of the fuel tank. this condition is caused by corrosion of the return and sender lines of the fuel pump module.water and road salt collect on top of the fuel pump leading to small pinholes appearing on the fuel lines.fuel may leak and collect on top of the module and/or spill onto the ground.the data evaluated under this investigation reflect a relatively low frequency of occurrence that largely arises in salt belt states.gm has extended the warranty on the subject component to ten years or 120,000 miles.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time; accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information select document search.

PE04001GENERAL MOTORS CORP.01/05/200405/07/2004FUEL SPILLAGE DURING REFUELING
This investigation was opened on the model year (my) 2003 chevrolet trailblazer.based on gm's information request (ir) response, odi added to its analysis the my 2003 gmc envoy and oldsmobile bravada vehicles.these vehicles share the same vehicle platform (gm 360/370) and fuel fill components.incident summary numbers reported above include these vehicles.epa regulates the fuel dispensing rates at filling stations and gm states that the reports of spitback for the subject vehicles are principally caused by fuel dispensing pumps exceeding the rate specified by epa.odi finds that the rate of complaints, field reports and warranty is low compared to other vehicles that have been recalled for a spitback issue.a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of the agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached report for additional information.

I have 2003 gmc envoy, smell gas fumes when gas tank is half full, no gas is leaking on the ground. will chevy cover some of these repairs? seems like a number of owners have this same problem,.

I was driving down the road and fist off, my speedometer went crazy. then my fuel gauge went all the way to full, then to empty. then it wouldn't work at all. there was plenty of gas in the tank too, i took to a mechanic and he replaced thermostat, but it didn't fix the problem. i'm still having the problem and heard there is a recall on the 2005-2007, and it appears i'm having the same problem on this 2003 that they are having now with the newer ones and the 2003 should be included in a recall. please evaluate. i only have 107k miles on the truck. i was told, a recall could cover up to 120k miles, so i still have some way to go before i should not be included in the recall. my service engine light is staying on too, although it's been checked numerous times and it's always something to do with the fuel system and too expensive to get fixed. now i am having major problems because of it.

Fuel leak coming from top of gas tank. i suspect it is the fuel pump module.severe rust and limited visibility prevented me from identifying 100 percent.talked to gm, they know of the problem but since it happened 14,000 miles beyond their extended special warranty for this, they will do nothing. bad design is a bad design regardless of miles or years. very dangerous having a leak this bad. will fix myself when i come up with the money.

My gas gauge has been inaccurately giving the proper fuel level. today i noticed the gauge is now stuck way past the full level and does not move.

I took my vehicle to the gmc dealership because of a distinct gas odor by the vehicle. i had previously received a cautionary letter from gmc that there could be a problem with the fuel pump involving pooling and pitting and extending the warranty to ten years to correct the defect. the inspection at the dealership stated that there was a fuel leak from the top of the fuel tank area-fuel pump module leaking the service advisor was sufficiently concerned to offer me a replacement vehicle to drive until the repair was made. he said that if i were to hit something and create a spark i could be in jeopardy. i was also concerned about a stray cigarette butt thrown out a window. he also gave me the customer assurance telephone number to call to file a claim. i did call the next morning and information was given and i was given a case number and told that the district would call me. when i received the call from that office she told me they would call me the following day. ten minutes later she called back and said that gm would not offer any assistance. they obviously knew there was a potential problem or they would not have sent out warning letters. i believe it should have been a recall considering the potential hazards involved. i wonder how many people did not read the letter and subsequently had repairs made at their own expense so they never reported the problem. it was a costly repair and i feel they should have covered the expense. i count myself lucky that it is not my serviving family filing this complaint.

Strong smell of fuel coming from behind the driver side rear door. check engine light on when code is checked... states small emmision leak present. upon doing a little web research find it to be caused by a leaking fuel tank. appears to have a recall on tank for xl model which inturn is the same tank but the sle model is not covered under recall. if orginal recall was issued for safety concern why not comply for all models

Vehicle is a 2003 gmc envoy. gas fumes were noticed coming from the rear of the vehicle. also, check engine light came on. took vehicle to gm dealer and was told that there was a crack in the plastic gas tank near the filler neck. was told that gm has been having problems with this but no recalls or repair bulletins. therefore, since vehicle was out of warranty i would have to pay $1350.00 for repairs. i see this as a safety issue. gm should be recalling these plastic gas tanks and replacing them at no cost to the customer as this is a safety issue. the vehicle could catch on fire! note: vehicle was not in any traffic accidents or used for off-road driving or abused in any way. gas tank should not have cracked. also, i have seen many other similar complaints on the internet identical to this one so it is a common problem to the envoy and trailblazer family.

2003 gmc envoy filler neck leaking. this is a known issue and there is a recall. when i took my truck to the dealership it had this issue but the recall is for the xl model. this is a major safety issue. how can they mess around with leaking gas? it is a 1200+ repair that should be covered.

2003 envoy slt -135,000 miles --ses light on, local mechanic said small evap code indicated inlet checkvalve fracture- they said go to gm dealer for help with this, info printout from local mechanic given to me- all data motor said recall spec. coverage for ext. size models of envoys etc. offered by gm for period of 10 yrs or 150,000 miles.(also 11/04 they did work warranty work on code 440 and replaced seals, tank unit, i think they caused this because i was having the ses light on&off years and just told loose gas cap- so i bought a new one but now this! dealer looked and said no after i was there for 5 hrs. said i could buy a new gas tank @ $1200. i said i didn't have the money. told i could call gm so i did. thought i would get goodwill help for same problem as they paid for the extended models. i talked to two reps .rep said my vin was listed in the coverage range of #'s but not my model. but she proceeded to take my info in order to get me some help..dealer called me back 4 days later in a hurry to look at it again with another mechanic that apparently their district gm person said to do. the home office for the gm service person called them with my complaint. they still looked at it and saw the gas leak at the icv and then still just told me no that my model didn't qualify for help like the extended envoys did. i told them it appeared to be the same engineering problem so why wouldn't my model be covered? my service rep just said i would have to buy a tank. i said no. he said just keep the gas tank below half full. so that is what i have done for the past week. i don't want to trigger that ses light by filling up the tank near that hose inlet. this does not make sense that they will not cover this problem for my model- is there some big difference on extended length? maybe enough short envoys and trailblazers haven't sought help for the same problem. is the engineering design of gastank and icv different on the short and long model envoy?? *tr

Had gas pouring from 2003 gmc envoy. the sending return part is bad, the gmc dealer said part is over $400 and has to be ordered from california, my warranty does not cover it and from what i have read on here, it has been quite a few envoys with the same problem. my envoy was originally a lease and came from pa which we were not told. we were told the warranty we purchased covered bumper to bumper but does not, the part will be 5 days coming and meantime, i have no car to drive until ?i get it back. i think since the gas leaks so much, and could have caused a fire or and an explosion something needs to be done. thank you for any information you may be able to offer. *tr

When driving my 2003 envoy it smelled strongly of gas and upon parking, it was leaking gas all over the ground, i had it towed and the sending unit was bad, if it had sparked or there had been an aec, it could have caught fire and the cost is $ 1000.00 and i have to pay out of pocket. the first extended service corporation will not cover it, the warranty was falsely offered to me by the sales rep at waestcott buick burlington nc and was costly and worthless. the envoy was a lease out of pa, which also was not disclosed to us. this has been a huge cost and disappointment. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 gmc envoy. while driving approximately 60 mph on normal road conditions, the contact smelled a strong odor of fuel coming from outside of the vehicle. the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and the technician stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was unknown and current mileage was 90,000.

I could smell a gasoline odor around my 2003 envoy (45,860 miles). took vehicle to coulter of tempe (an authorized gm dealer) and was advised of a leak at fuel inlet to tank pipe area. was told gas tank would need to be replaced. gm has had a similar problem with the 2003 envoy xls and issued a letter dated june 2007 covering the entire amount of replacing these fuel tanks for 10 years or 150,000 miles. this coverage should be extended to all 2003 envoys and a possible recall issued as this leak at the fuel filler neck seam at the tank is not easily identified unless vehicle is hoisted on a lift. they did offer us a deal where we were charged a warranty deductible of $500, but i feel this repair should have been covered in its entirety. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 gmc envoy. the contact stated that the vehicle would start after a few seconds. she also noticed a gaseous odor and a fuel leak underneath the vehicle. the mechanic stated that a rusted fuel module caused the failure and he replaced the fuel module. there had been no other occurrences. the current and failure mileages were 65,417.

Also every time i fill my gas tank, gas comes back up and spills out, it does not matter if i leave the nozzle in, take it out immediately, and i am never topping the tank off. when i had it back to the dealer they said they were unaware of any problems. *la

2003 gmc envoy with a list of problems **nar**cc the consumer began to hear a knocking and pinging in the engine on cold starts and felt a hesitation when the automatic transmission shifted into gear. after many complaints, it was finally discovered the engine knock was due to shorter pistons in the re-designed engine and the hesitation in the transmission shifting required reprogramming. the consumer was told he would have to live with the engine knock, because it could be more trouble taking the engine apart. on a separate occasion, the engine stalled due to the battery dying. from april 2004 to october 2004 the battery failed several times and had to be re-charged. during that same time the engine light illuminated and each time it happened, the dealer would have to reprogram the engine computer. the radio was not functioning properly which primarily consisted of static. the driver information center control knobs as well as the radio knobs wore out. the front center console was loose. it was discovered that the engine light was coming on because the third stop light that's on the top of the liftgate malfunctioned. there was a short circuit in the stop light. the cooling fan broke, the brakes and the left front head lamp had to be replaced. the rear tail lights, directional and signal lights have been replaced several times. the lug nut broke while a replacement tire was being mounted on the vehicle. the front stabilizer linkage was replaced. the gas tank had to be replaced along with the fuel lines and a seal on the tank due to a leak. the seat belt was designed poorly and the belt cuts into the consumers neck. the drivers side door didn't close properly, the windshield wipers were replaced within the first 2 years. *jb

I bought a 2003 envoy xl 11 days before the incident. we went into a restaurant, came back out after eating and the car would not start. i was 150 miles away from home. the car had less than 1000 miles on it and had to be towed away. i had to leave the car, get a rental (which was paid for), and was told it was the fuel pump, which the dealer stated they had never had happen before. i told the dealer i was not comfortable with that car, but was told this was a unheard of problem.

There seems to be an overwhelming amount of error code po442 in the 2003 gmc envoy and chevy trailblazers. this code is a faulty gas tank that over time develops a small leak. the only way to fix it is to replace the tank. this cost anywhere between $1000 - $1500 to replace. if there is a gas leak there can be a fire!!! *tr

I own a 2003 gmc envoy. i am the original owner. the service engine light came on so we visited the local dealership to find out what was wrong. upon testing the vehicle there was a crack found at the stem of the fuel tank. it had been leaking fuel and loosing pressure causing the light to illuminate. the repair bill is around $1400 for a safety hazard that was no fault of mine. the service manager said that it was a bad design due to epa regulations on venting the cap and that he had seen many of these. i contacted gm and they were not willing to help. they offered a discount on a new or used car. there is no current recall but the more i look into this, there have been many issues of this happening. this problem could kill many people. *jb

When i fill my envoy with gas, it will not stop when it is full. the gas then spills over onto the side of the suv and causes me to clean it immediately and smell like gas. i know that it is the suv and not the pump because it doesn't happen with my other vehicle at the same pump. *jb

There is a fueling problem with the vehicle. the problem is intermittent but happens regularly enough (30% to 40% of the time) to have the potential to be a safety hazard or cause serious physical hazard to the operator. the vehicle on occasion will not accept gas into the fuel tank and then will immediately cut off the fuel supply and then back up and splash fuel out onto the operator while attempting to fuel the vehicle. it may take numerous attempts before the tank will accept the fuel, all the while splashing fuel out of the filler on each attempt. on other occasions, the tank, as it approaches full, will just splash gas out of the fuel filler without warning or any indication without cutting off the gas pump fill hose as it normally would. this condition can be a serious physical and health hazard to the operator since gas gets on the skin and the cloths of the operator, causing a burning sensation and subjecting the operator to other safety concerns. the fuel spill can also be considered an environmental and fire hazard. a number of different gas pumps and gas stations have been tried with the same results during fueling. this would rule out a problem with one pump or filling station causing the problem. the problem has even occurred in different cities. *jb

My 2003 gmc envoy has a defective fuel tank. according to the dealer the tank has a small crack in the vapor recovery line. dealer and gmc claims that it is not a hazzard but there is a very strong gasoline oder when the vehicle is started or stoped and it continues for some time until the engine is warm. dealer claims the tank is being redesigned gmc will not confirm or deny. what i know is the part has an expected but not definet 4 to 6 week delivery time.

A cracking has occurred where the gasoline filler tube connects to the tank. that caused a vacuum leak, which caused the service engine soon light to illuminate. dealership has diagnosed, and confirmed cracking and advised gasoline leaking could occur and recommends replacing tank. 1.vacuum leak renders gasoline tank emissions system inefficient. 2. if gasoline leak occurs, it is then a fire hazard. the dealership communicated to us, he has seen similar failures in that vehicle model (gmc envoy). *nm

I have 03 gmc envoy that i take very good care of. i have been smelling gas lately and not seen any gas leaking. the gas oder gradually has been getting stronger and stronger. eventually i was able to tell that there is a gas leak, but is only leaking a small amount while the truck is running. now my envoy reeks of gasoline all the time outside and sometimes inside when the heat is on and ideling. seems the gas pools on an indent on top of the gas tank and when i pull into my driveway(down a steep hill and sharp turn) it all pours out. seems that everyone is having the same type problems. seems to me this is a bad design on gm's behalf.......maybe they will step up to the plate and fix this obvious defect. i wonder if they still produce them like this? i can only assume that this affects so many other models. yikes! thats a lot of people who are in danger or got stuck with a lofty repair bill
