| I was coming upon a red light behind other traffic. i stepped down on the brakes to stop, and the peddle felt spongy. i tried pumping them, then nothing. i avoided hitting the truck in front of me by swerving across into the other lane and pulling into a parking lot, were i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop. the brake warning light never came on, and i don't understand while it was a total brake failure, i thought that's why there is a dual reservoir, and there was still plenty of fluid in both. upon inspection, i saw the brake lines were all severely corroded, and the one going to the rear brakes was split. i know i live in michigan, and the truck is rusty(thanks again gm) but i have cars over 40 years old with original lines on them with absolutely no corrosion on them. this is a substandard part, that needs to be recalled before more people are injured or killed. *tr | |||

| As i was approaching a stoplight, my brake pedal went to the floor. i limped it around the corner and found a hole in a hard brake line. i had it repaired by a certified mechanic. now a second rupture has occurred. this seems to be a result of corrosion. *tr | |||

| Upon leaving my driveway to the first intersection the brake pedal went all the way to the floorboard. i got the truck home and parked it. i thought the anti-lock part was probably the problem. expensive as that part is i just let the truck sit. one day i left a piece of cardboard under the truck and isolated the leak to two rusted out lines at the plastic clip on the frame. this area must hold moisture and doesn't dry-out, allowing it to rust. | |||

| Brakes failed as i was just leaving the front of my house , tow to garage $65.00 installed all new brake lines from master cylinder to abs pump and from abs pump to each wheels flex line cost of $300.49, hazardous materials$10.00,labor $500.00 . | |||

| I was driving about 35mph and i was coming to a red light so i put on the brakes and i heard a pop and my brake pedal went to the floor and i almost went thru the intersection. i got out of my truck and saw that i was leaking brake fluid from the front. i opened the hood and saw my front brake line was leaking around a corroded area on a hard brake line attached the frame rail. it was a hard brake line failure not a rubber line like in the wheel well. i cant believe that a truck that is 12 years old has a brake line rust thru, this is very dangerous. | |||

| On april 15 2010, as i was bringing my vehicle to a stop, the brake pedal traveled all the way to the floor. when i got under the vehicle to examine it i saw the rear right brake line was leaking brake fluid badly due to a break in the metal brake line. again on 2/27/2011, i was stopping my vehicle at a stop sign and the same thing happened at a low speed. only this time it was a front right brake line. luckily in my incidents there were no accidents or injuries or deaths, but this is a serious issue with these vehicles, all the rest of my brake lines are in very poor condition at this time and will also need to be changed so i feel safe driving my truck, especially when my family is with me. i have owned twenty plus vehicle in my time and even some of them where general motors, but i have never seen a vehicle deteriorate the way that this one is. | |||

| Severe corrosion of the brake lines became apparent during a sudden application of the brakes which caused multiple brake lines to rupture and leave the vehicle with no brakes since a line from the master cylinder to the abs unit front left input and the abs to the rear t line blew simultaneously. when removing the damaged brake lines they literally crumbled to pieces due to corrosion. during the repair to the brake lines severe corrosion was noted on the fuel lines also. | |||

| My truck was parked. i started my truck. i applied the brake to put my truck in gear. the brake pedal went completely down to the floor. i inspected under my truck, and there was a puddle of brake fluid under the driver's side area on the cement. i saw that all the brake lines connected to the abs electro-hydraulic control unit are severely rusted, and one of them was leaking severely. i had my truck towed home. there was no warning light on the dash that was blinking to tell me i that i was having a problem with my brakes. they were working fine prior to this failure. i will document the condition of the brake lines with a picture and brake mechanic witnesses before any repairs. i am in the process of locating a brake repair business. | |||

| Upon applying the brakes on to a 1999 gmc sierra the brake line ruptured, spewing brake fluid onto pavement and causing near immediate loss of all stopping ability. the brakes were not applied with excessive pressure and the speed was less than 15 mph. could there be a defect with the placing of the lines that causes these brake lines to rupture? upon checking with friends and the internet it has become apparent that this is not a rare occurrence with the gmc sierras/silverados. the repair was quoted at $1900 dollars to repair the ruptured brake line as well as other assorted brake parts. this vehicle has always seemed to have some type of problem with the brakes and for some reason it seems to be common knowledge within the automotive repair industry that this specific vehicle will develop problems with its brakes.if i were using any speed with this rupture occurred, i am sure the outcome would have been more serious. | |||

| In march of 2009, the brake line on my 1999 gmc sierra 1500 broke and the brake pedal went right to the floor. i stopped in a parking lot and checked all over and found that the brake line was rusted under the cab on the driver side. that was where the line broke and brake fluid would leak out. i had it fixed for $650 and on tuesday, september 13, 2010, the brake line broke again right at the rear axle when i was moving the truck in my backyard. | |||

| 1999.5 gmc sierra 1500 4wd ext cab, shortbed. may 2005 front brake line burst while applying brakes due to slowed traffic on 65mph interstate in upstate ny. used shoulder to avoid hitting vehicles in front of me, however rear brakes only on a 6k pound pickup truck, unloaded, do not result in effective braking. i had to downshift my automatic to use engine braking as well as the parking brake (which also is poorly designed and ineffective). truck was towed to gm dealer where front brake lines were replaced as all were rusted/rotted to unsafe levels, with one fracturing causing the loss of pressure and fluid. april 2009 upon doing an oil changed, myself, i discover the all of the brake lines, including the front as well as the rear are in very bad shape due to rust. after speaking to my mechanic i have learned that the gm brake like from the late 90s to 2004 were not properly designed to deal with the weather and resist corrosion. he said at least once a week he has to replace sections of gm brake line from these trucks and suvs. i cannot currently afford to replace these yet as its a $1700 job due to the labor involved and the fact that replacing with gm's brake lines will just rust again in 2-3 years. so i need aftermarket lines, probably stainless steel or at least something with a proper amount of nickel in it (which gm has skimped on!) which hopefully i can put on in the next few months before i get killed or someone else killed. april 2010. *tr | |||

| 1999 gmc sierra 1500 5.3 - i had brake lines fail on 3 separate occasions. first was a hard line to the front drivers side, happened in my driveway so no crash. second was a line coming from the master cylinder. this was while towing a trailer and the trailer brakes managed to get us stopped even though we were on a hill. the third failure was stopping at a light, luckily no one was in front of me and i had plenty of stopping distance. after that i replaced all of the remaining lines on the truck. no problems since. | |||

| After putting in new brake pads and brake rotors on my 1999 gmc sierra 1500 pickup truck, i lost pressure to the brake pedal. after checking for recalls and having more then one certified mechanic try to solve the issue i was told the ehcu ( electro-hydraulic control unit) was not working. the companies told me that it was a common item to go bad on all trucks 1999 and newer. there are no recalls on them and they are a dealership item. the cost of a new one is $1,068.00. being that this item is a common problem and the price being so expensive when the vehicle is 10 yrs old, i feel the price of the units should be either recalled or lower in price. | |||

| Brake failure due to rusted brake line. a panic stop was attempted to avoid a merging vehicle. the brake pedal went to the floor when the line broke. i was able to avoid the vehicle the remaining fluid and slow speed stopped my vehicle. i have had other problems in the past with the brake pedal being soft and able to go to the floor. but it rebounded and stopped the truck. there is also abs quirks as well. vehicle is a 1999 gmc sierra extended cab 3 door 4x4 5.3l 78,000 miles. i found the leak it was inside the frame under the drivers door in a cluster of brake lines attaching to the abs pump. all of the brake lines in the area were seriously rusted and have to be replaced. the lines aprox. 1 foot from the abs pump are in good shape. the brake lines seem to be rusted however the frame, underbody floor and other equipment located in the same area are not showing a rust problem. this rust problem should be checked and inspected regularly. i think a stainless steel or other rust resistant material should used in this location. *tr | |||

| Brake line running along frame to rear wheels ruptured when shifting from park to drive. shift interlock requires brake depressed to shift from park to drive. brake lines running from firewall to rear of vehicle along inside of frame rail are corroded and soft so badly as to need replacing. like vehicle in shop for identical issue. when brake line ruptured, there are no brakes on vehicle at all due to a single reservoir vice twin reservoirs on most vehicles to separate front and rear brake systems. brake line possibly made of material unsuitable for long term usage. brakes lines also are place in an area that will collect corrosive material from roadway from vehicle tires. no crash, but $600 required in repairs. if moving when brake line ruptured, there is high probability of severe crash. *tr | |||

| Dt*: the contact stated while backing the vehicle out of a parking space, a humming noise was heard. while driving the vehicle 50 mph, the noise continued. the contact determined the humming noise was the brake module pump running and disconnected the pump until the vehicle could be taken to the dealership. after the engine was turned off, the humming noise continued. the dealership confirmed the humming noise was coming from the brake control module and there was either a faulty electronic computer relay in the brake module or in the valve body of the brake module. updated 10/18/2006 - the consumer is concerned that the brakes may fail. *nm | |||
