The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure.odi's and gm's analysis indicates that 85 percent of the complaints occurred on vehicles used primarily in states that use salt on the roads during winter months (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).overall the complaint rates per 100,000 vehicles for salt belt states is 43.0 and non-salt belt is 3.0.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints the brake pipe failure occurred suddenly, with no warning (i.e., no mil, brake fluid loss warning), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 30 of these the increase in stopping distance that resulted was a factor in the crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-001) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well.
PE10010GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/30/2010Brake line failure due to corrosion
The office of defects investigation (odi) received a defect petition on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.the petitioner alleged a sudden loss of brake effectiveness and extended stopping distance after a corroded brake burst during a brake application. odi has received 110 owner complaints for my 1999 through 2003 chevrolet and gmc c/k series pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, including 3 involving my 2003 2500 series heavy-duty pickup trucks.the complaints allege the loss of braking effectiveness due to brake line rupture because of corrosion.in 37 of these complaints, the brake line failure was confirmed by a dealer inspection.three complaints allege that corroded brake line failure resulted in a crash.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to determine the frequency, scope and safety consequences of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.

Description: 2002 gmc sierra?82,xxx.00 miles. while dropping my daughter off at school, i stopped at a light, accelerated to make it up the hill, and as i came over the horizon i proceeded to stop, when i depressed my brake pedal to slow down, the pedal went right to the floor. i almost ran into another vehicle and had i not thrown the car into low gear, and depressed my emergency brake, i am certain that we would have smashed into the school bus in front of us. my wife called aaa, and had the car towed to the local gmc dealer. it seems that the entire brake line system is rusted out, and that this was the first line to blow. they had the audacity to tell my wife that the repairs would start at $3,300.00 and would not guaranty that it could not be more expensive than that!. we take good care of the truck, last year we had all the brakes done, new tires, and recently had a new head gasket installed, and the oil changed, so it is obvious that the dealer does not ever do a thorough vehicle inspection. we cannot afford the shell out the money for these repairs, and i am hopeful that there has been some kind of a recall for this, since i see so many complaints about the same subject? please help! *tr

I was lucky and not moving when this occurred for the second time. once again i was getting ready to leave in my truck when i stepped on the brake pedal to shift out of park and the brake pedal went to the floor. should i take my chances on this happening a third time? perhaps i won't be so lucky and there may be an accident involved along with possible injury or death. i did find a recall for tailgate straps for this truck but not for corroded brake lines that are bursting? i find that to be unacceptable. what are the chances of someone dying from corroded tailgate straps? this is an incredible safety issue affecting millions of trucks and there needs to be a recall issued to have these brake lines replaced with stainless steel so as not to have this problem repeated in the future. *tr

While traveling out of state, the brake pedal suddenly went completely to the floor. fortunately, the truck was stopped at the time. repairs estimated by sears indicated that all lines should be replaced as well as parking brake parts due to severe corrosion. had the ruptured line replaced along with caliper at the affected wheel. will have to have all remaining lines replaced to be sure the vehicle can be driven safely. the technicians who worked on the vehicle indicated it is extremely corroded compared to other vehicles of it's age and mileage. *tr

When you are going 3 to 6 miles per hour going slow or coming to a stop the abs system fails causing the brakes not to work, you have to push really hard on the pedal just to get it to slow down. i,ve talked to other people who have gmc and chevy pick-ups and they have had the same problem.this is something the should be repaired by gm before someone is killed.i also found out today that canada has issussed a recall for this problem. does it take someone to get killed or injured be the nhtsa does something?

The metalic brake line tubing ruptured causing brake failure while traveling 50 mph on a downgrade. the metal line above the rear axle, passenger side, corroded through and spewed brake fluid all over. the corrosion point is about 7-10 inches forward of the junction where the brake line transitions to rubber hose that goes to the rear axle junction. there is also an unusual amount of corrosion on the gas fuel filter fittings located just forward of the gasoline tank. i was able to slow and stop by downshifting and using the emergency brake. brake lines should not corrode and fail in any climate on a 9 year old truck! they should not corrode period.

Both the driver side and rear brake lines, because of rust, burst at the same time. it was lucky the car was not on the road.i have replaced all the lines and had to replace the front calipers because the bleeding nippled were completly gone due to rust. the rear calipers were in good shape.over the course of ownership, i have had to forcefully remove the tires from the hub because they were rusted to the hub. again i was lucky that i did this work at home and would have been in serious trouble had i been forced to change tires due to a flat. it also appears the truck frame is showing advance rusting for its age and milelage.

Hydraulic brake line corrosion: the brake lines became so corroded that i was losing approximately 16 oz.of fluid every 1000 miles.the corrosion was so bad that the bleeders on the front calipers had rusted off and had to be replaced as well as all of the brake lines.this resulted in a repair bill of $701.31.only time will tell when the remaining lines and calipers will need replacing.only a few weeks ago the service mgr. at this location told me i probably had the best looking 2002 gmc pick-up in the u.s. so neglect is not at fault here.

Stepped on the brake to put the truck in gear when it was noticed that the brake pedal went all the way to the floor! backed up, pulled forward, there were no brakes! vehicle was carefully driven home using back roads and transmission braking along with limited pedal braking. brake light came on just before arriving at home, 10 miles down the road. the truck is presently in an independent repair facility. all metal brake lines are to be replaced at significant cost to me. upon inspection it is apparent that the brake lines are more of substandard material. all metal lines show excessive corrosion and deterioration for a vehicle of this age and mileage. the truck is my wife's and was rarely driven during winter months.

2002 gmc sierra 1500 low speed abs failure. currently under recall # 05v37900 and gm recall 05-068. after recall was performed the abs is still failing and this vehicle will not stop when under 5 mph. the true failure mode is not the abs sensor corroding, it is the wheel bearing having extreme wear and it renders the hall effect signal that the sensor reads bad. details: at 50k miles i had the same low speed abs failure. the truck was out of warranty at this time and i had to purchase genuine gm replacement parts and replace both front wheel bearing and sensors on my own dime. this fixed the first abs failure. then the recall came out for just the wheel sensor, not the bearing. now 12k miles later (truck has 66k miles) the driver side wheel bearing is now so sloppy that the abs sensor will not read the hall effect. this causes the low speed abs failure mode again. i have pulled the abs fuse under the hood so that the low speed failures stop, but now the truck has non functioning abs. lastly, after 12k miles on the replacement gm bearings there is so much slop in the bearing that the dealer has suggested that i should not drive this vehicle due to safety reasons. the driver side wheel is close to falling off the vehicle. i contacted gm customer service at 1-800 gmc truck by the recommendation of my dealer and gm customer service is has yet to contact the dealer for resolution in this matter. my only choice it to replace the wheel bearing at my own cost and i have already done that once 12k miles ago only to have the failure occur again. i will have to continue replacing the wheel bearings for the remainder of this vehicles service life to maintain a vehicle that can safely transport my family. i have no confidence is this vehicle remaining safe for any extended period of time. *jb what can nhsta do about this problem?

The brakes on my gmc sierra were recalled because they can fail between 3 and 10 miles an hour. i took the truck in to be fix, however, i am still having trouble with the brakes- (i believe it is with the front wheel speed sensor -this is how it was listed on the recall paper). they seem to fail more under damp/moist/slippery conditions. when i called the dealership to tell them that the truck was still having problems after they had worked on the brakes their response was deal with it. i am sorry but i cannot just deal with brakes that you cannot trust. what kind of help can i get with this. they have worked on the brakes four times....and they are still not good. yesterday they took it and drove it....it was a nice and not bad conditions and they brought it back and said there was not a problem. i am sorry but there is a problem! they are very temperamental brakes! *nm

I have a 2002 gmc sierra with abs which falsely activates at slow speeds. many friends have had similar complaints, one of which connected me to you folks. the situation is as known in pe05020. the fix is temporary and typically lasts 9 - 12 months. *nm

This complaint is to support investigation pe05020 1 - events leading to failure: my truck has been driven in ny state since it was purchased in late 2001. it has been properly maintained and serviced. 2 - failure and its consequences: after 40,000 miles, every time i came to a stop the anti-lock brakes would kick in (under 10 mph in completely dry conditions). this made the vehicle extremely difficult if not impossible to stop. i almost became involved in an accident on 3 or 4 separate occasions until i pulled the fuse for the abs system. pulling the fuse disables the system so i'm now driving without anti-lock brakes. certainly better than the alternative. 3 - corrective measures and availability of parts i brought the vehicle in for service to patrick gmc in rochester, ny. paid $85.73 to have it diagnosed. they indicated both front speed sensors were bad and both hub assemblies would need to be replaced at a cost of $432 per side plus tax. the sensor itself is not available - it must be purchased with an entire hub assembly. i did not have the work done and continue to drive the vehicle with the abs fuse pulled. the vehicle is unsafe to drive in any other condition (except if the hubs were replaced). the defective parts are still on my truck. *nm

The anti lock brakes on a 2002 gmc sierra extended cab pickup turn on (when they normally should not - dry stopping conditions) at low speed stops <10 mph. when they came on they would make stopping the vehicle very difficult. the last time the truck could not be stopped at a stop sign and went into a busy intersection, luckily with out an accident. to prevent the problem over the last six months i have had the fuse for the anti lock brakes removed to disable the anti lock feature completley.

The disc brake pads jam and fail to make proper contact with the rotors when dirt gets in the area that the brake pads ride on 'runners (stainless steel sheet metal covers the mounting frame where it rides . the clearance is so close and road it will jam the pads. this requires disassembly of all of the brake caliper and grinding of the rotor frequently. the pads not pressing on the rotors properly allow the rotor to rust further degrading the brake performance and causes uneven braking and greatly increased stopping distance -- i have had to overhaul the brakes three times and the repair mechanic says all gm trucks have the same problem

I took my truck in for an oil change and the dealer told me that my truck (50,000 miles) needed new front rotors because mine were de-laminated i asked how this could happen and the mechanic could not give me a clear answer. the gm assistance center told me that the dealership told them the reason for this was i refused some dealer recommended maintenance, although the dealership service manager said that was not the case. i spoke to a metalurgist and he stated the problem was most likely from the manufacturing process caused by not cooling the rotors properly after the were cast, since both rotors are only defective on the inside face. i also own a 1990 chevy truck with 270,000 miles that still has the original rotors. i am afraid this defect could cause an occurrence of brake failure and i am afraid to drive the truck under highway conditions. also, after asking numerous others, no one (other than gm) has heard of this phenomenon. *nm

My 2002 gmc sierra has a braking problem when stopping from a slow speed. i took my concern to the dealer and they said the rear rotors were rusted and may need to be replaced. i think this should be a warranty issue as the truck has 32,000 miles and is less than 3 years old, it is unsafe to drive as it is. they tell me it is because i live in the northeast and is not a defect in materials. in 2002 at a brake symposium, sponsered by the manufacturers, it was noted that gmc took the metal chromium ouof the rotor alloy to save money. chromium resists rust. is there any help available?

Vehicle has 19000 miles on it and the brake rotors are badly scored and rusted, resulting in a pulsating brake pedal and the requirement of greater brake pedal pressure to stop the vehicle. the problem is primarily with the rear brakes, but the front brakes are starting to show the same signs. a recent brake inspection indicates that the brake pads are well within tolerance for wear, but the rotors will not pass pennsylvania state safety inspection in their current condition. i have consulted with at least four other individuals with similar vehicles that have encountered the same problem. *ak

Vehicle is a 2002 gmc 6.0l 2500hd sierra truck. it has the gm hydroboost braking system (brake assist is from the power steering pump). the pressure line running from the brake booster to the steering rack was incorrectly routed, resulting in a very sharp bend in the flexible part of hose. the hose cracked at this point, and leaked some. the failure was caught early, and there was no accident or fire. however, if this leak had not been noticed, at some point all power assist braking and steering could have been lost. i have pictures of the incorrect routing, and the old hose if needed.*ak
