| PE10010 | GENERAL MOTORS CORP. | 03/30/2010 | 01/05/2011 | Brake line corrosion failure | ||
| The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure.odi's and gm's analysis indicates that 85 percent of the complaints occurred on vehicles used primarily in states that use salt on the roads during winter months (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).overall the complaint rates per 100,000 vehicles for salt belt states is 43.0 and non-salt belt is 3.0.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints the brake pipe failure occurred suddenly, with no warning (i.e., no mil, brake fluid loss warning), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 30 of these the increase in stopping distance that resulted was a factor in the crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-001) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well. | ||||||

| As i was pulling out of the parking lot of my work, onto a public road, i came to a stop sign. i had brake pedal pressure for about 1 second, then the pedal went to the floor. there was traffic coming from both directions so i became a little nervous. the truck did stop in time though. i knew i had blown a brake line right away. i went back to work and inspected the lines and the rear line had blown apart. this is my second gm vehicle that blew a brake line in the exact same spot on the vehicle. i recently moved to florida, this vehicle has been an ohio vehicle all it life. *tr | |||

| (rear brake line rupture) my wife was on her way to work when she applied the brakes the brake warning light came on. the pedal became real soft as if the vehicle wasn't going to stop. after returning home, upon investigation the brake master cylinder was almost empty. i found brake fluid coming out of a badly corroded brake line just behind the fuel tank. this could have been a very bad situation. we are the second owners on this vehicle, purchased in 2001. we have always kept it maintained and clean, including car washes after snow storms to remove road salt and sand. this should not be happening on an 11 year old vehicle, thankfully this didn't result in an accident. i have also noticed the fuel lines have corrosion at ever mounting location. so, i guess these are going to fail as well some time in the future. | |||

| Gm recall # 05068 for this safety issue. this recall pertains to certain pickup trucks and suv's between 1999 and 2002 and failing abs at slow speeds which causes the brakes to pulsate and to not work correctly. the recall covered most of the ne states (salt belt) and was caused by corrosion. the abs low speed sensor's would malfunction and cause the abs to activate and the vehicle would not stop (as if slipping). i own a 1999 gmc yukon with 70k miles and the abs sensors are shot. i called gm, they told me to contact a local dealer, when i did, the dealer said they would talk to the gm rep. final answer from gm ...since my vin was not part of the recall, they will do nothing. they want $300 to fix my 99 yukon, the same problem they would fix for free if it were a 1999 sierra k1500 truck or a 2000 yukon, both vehicles using the same abs sensors. my 1999 gmc yukon is a k1500 (as stated on the original sticker) and that vehicle is covered by the recall as well as the 2000 yukon. i have checked and the replacement sensors are the same for my 99 yukon as they are for the 99 k1500 and the 2000 yukon. gm dealer said to me, well you truck is out of warranty. what does that have to do with a safety recall. i have names from the dealership, the local gm rep, gm customer service call #71-550013xxx. both gm and the dealership have refused to fix my vehicle under the gm recall, stating that | |||

| The abs system on my 1999 gmc yukon is exhibiting brake release at low speed. it can be described exactly as in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000. the gm dealer said this vehicle has the same brake hardware as the 2000 model yukon which has been recalled, however, my vehicle has not been recalled. the recall should be expanded to include those 1999 year yukons such as mine. i sometimes have to really push hard to get the vehicle stopped while the abs system is releasing brake pressure. i am familiar with abs design, since i was at one time the manager of the gm abs project and personally designed brake pressure release valves. i should not have to pay to have this safety defect corrected. *jb | |||

| All four front brake pads was completely worn and damaged. the front rotors needed to be replaced and vehicle was under warranty but gmc insist that brakes were not part of warranty even though when i took vehicle into gmc dealership for inspection gmc dealer informed me that it was a known fact at gmc that the original brakes on the yukon only lasted 10,000 to 17,000 miles. this information is not known to the consumer even though it is widely documented within gmc. this is a known hazard that should be disclosed and fixed via a vehicle recall by gmc. instead gmc puts the expense of the repair on the consumer who is unfairly, and unreasonable caught off guards paying upwards of $35k for a new 1999 vehicle unaware that they will need to spend additional monies to replace the brakes every 10,000-17,000 miles. the dealer told me that the squeaking of my brakes is the only warning sign the vehicle gives the unsuspecting owner that the brakes have deteriorated. this condition is a safety hazard that will endanger lives and gmc should stand behind their vehicles and be held accountable for the brake repairs not the unsuspecting consumer who bought the vehicle in good faith and is now stiffed with a bill for costly repairs on a new vehicle 1999 that has by all standards has low mileage. | |||

| One of the four front brake pads was completely disintigrated and damaged. the front rotors needing to be replaced. gmc service center claims that the brakes are designed to break down within 20000 miles and this is normal. the brake pad failed completely and the front brakes would not operate properly or stop the vehicle. after lengthy discussion and many repeat calls the gmc representative went by the dealership and decided that it was indeed a faulty part. the claim by the service people was that gmc has changed out the brake pads to a softer compound and they will not last more than 20-25000 miles. the immediateness of the failure ( ie. the wear indicators did not work properly) may have been more dangerous if we would have been in a heavy traffic area.*ak | |||

| The metal hydraulic brake line running from the master cylinder to the passenger side front disc brake assembly ruptured, causing the vehicle to lose its braking power while the vehicle was being driven. this line crosses the front of the vehicle and then runs on top of the frame just under where the battery is located. after inspecting and finding the hole it was very apparent that battery acid/corrosion had dripped onto the line,, causing it to be eaten away. the battery is orginal equipment and maintanance free. | |||
