| Defect Summary | Tire description: wilderness le tires (both black and raised white letter tires) produced during the week of april 24, 2000 (the seventeenth week of 2000) at the cuernavaca, mexico plant with tire serial numbers v672wl11700 (blackwall) and v672wl21700 (raised white letters). these tires were used as original equipment on model year 2000 yukon xl 1500 series vehicles and were also offered as optional equipment on the 2000 chevrolet suburban 1500 series vehicles. tread separation can occur due to a lack of adhesion to the first steel belt. | |||||||||||||||
| Consequence Summary | Tread belt separation may be noticed by irregular wear, noise, or vibration. with continued use, it may lead to complete separation of the tread/belt package from the tire carcass, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or death. | |||||||||||||||
| Corrective Summary | On january 2, 2001, firestone made a public announcement of the defect and that replacement tires are immediately available at no cost to the customer. replacement tires are available at either their local gm or chevrolet dealer or by their local authorized participating firestone retailer. owner notification began january 1, 2001. owners should contact firestone at 1-800-465-1904. | |||||||||||||||

| I have had 2 catastrophic failures on the subject firestone tires @ 60 and 70 mph respectively. firestone would not replace the first tire in may, 2001. after the second failure, 8/30/02 i found a recall call notice on firestones website for the wilderness le tires manufactured in mexico(which mine were) however it only covers dot#v672wl21700. i have appealed to the local firestone dealer without any satisfaction. my concern is that the problem extends beyond the recall notice and someone will be seriously injured before firestone is forced to make a broader recall.*ak | |||

| At .155 depth of tread and even wear, tire developed 30 to 40 deep radial cracks, 1 to 2 long, between the tire outside edge tread blocks and proceeding toward the sidewall. the tire has always been properly inflated to 36 - 50 psi (80 psi cold max) and was imeadiately removed from the vehicle apon discovery of defect. there is no visible external damage to the tire and it never been off the rim. the tire still holds air. | The tire tread came apart and caused us to have a blowout on the freeway. we paid to have the tire replaced at a firestone dealer because the gm dealer told us it was a defective tire. the firestone dealer confirmed that there was no indication that we had run over any road hazards to cause the tire to come apart. we are trying to get gm to replace the tires with another brand since this is a brand new car. in light of recent news reports about these firestone tires, we are not comfortable driving with our family on these tires. we feel fortunate that we were able to get to the side of the road without having an accident and we don't want it to happen again. *ak( dot number: tire size: p2658ri6 ) | |||

| Returning from a trip to al after having our yukon xl for approx. 2 weeks, we had a blowout at 4am. we heard a clunk and about 15 minutes later, the blowout occurred. the tread totally separated. we were not reimbursed for the tire and had to buy another one. now that we know firestone has a problem with these tires, we would like to be able to turn these tires in to firestone and get a complete refund and then go buy another brand of tires. firestone has said they will inspect the tires for free and if they see any problem with any tire, they would replace that tire with another firestone tire. i don't want to keep the firestone tires. can you help?*ak( dot number: tire size: p265/70r16 ) | |||
