Defect SummaryHyundai is recalling 393,308 my 2006-2008 sonata vehicles equipped with an advanced air bag system which features an occupant classification system (ocs) in the right front seat. the purpose of the ocs is to disable the right passenger seat front air bag when it detects the presence of a child restraint system or small child in the right front seat. the right front air bag is disabled to prevent injuries to a child that may result from a right front air bag inflation during a crash.
Consequence SummaryMisclassification of a small stature adult as a child in the right front passenger seat may cause the right front air bag to not inflate in an accident that merits air bag deployment and may result in injury to the right front occupant.
Corrective SummaryDealers will verify that the ocs does not properly recognize a properly seated adult occupant. after verification, dealers will remove the right front seat cushion assembly and ship it to an evaluation and repair facility. this facility will evaluate and repair or reprogram the seat cushion and ocs as necessary. the recall is expected to begin on or about may 26, 2008. owners may contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

2/25/2013:air bag light went on driver's side. took car into dealership they had to replace pretensioner caused by b1706 pass resistance too high buckler pretensioner. they charged us $316.19 i am concerned about the safety of this car as we had an issue on the passenger side on 5/8/2012 air bag light was on. found codes b1448 passenger weight sensor defect/fault traced and found seat bottom faulty. there was no charge for this they said as it was under warranty. since there is a class action suit regarding the 5/2012 issue i feel this car is not safe.

Passenger right side airbag warning light is intermittently on. diagnosis was passenger side pre tensioner since this time the problem has not been solved. the seat itself was replaced, but the problem still remains in december 2012. service says that the occupant weight less than 110 may cause the warning, but the december 2012 diagnosis used 3 different people (100,120, and 170 pounds) and found no problem. when the light is on, there is no assurance that the airbag will function in a crash.after the december 28 check the warning light has not come on but only one short drive from dealer. *tr

My airbag light has been on for approximately 8 months. i had it to the dealer and they said it was a loose connection. they re-connected and the light went off. now it has been back on for about 2 months. also i have a hard time connecting my driver seat belt, one time i had to drive without it at all since i could not get it to snap in at all. also the passenger seat belt display light flashes even when there is no one sitting in the seat. i called and apparently i am not a part of the recall for the airbag. my sister has the same car, same year and has the same issues. i find this hard to believe that this is an isolated problem.

Upon starting the vehicle, the dashboard check airbag light was constantly illuminated. took vehicle to the dealer (23jul08) where they diagnosed code b1701 and replaced the front drivers seat belt buckle assembly. at 43,340 miles (03feb09) i needed the passenger seat belt buckle assembly (b1706 code) replaced. at 57,106 miles (06nov09) i needed the drivers seat belt buckle replaced (code not documented by dealer). now (19dec12) the check airbag light is lit again (103,121) and the codes b1701 ad b1706 both show up. most likely replace both driver and passenger seat belt buckle assembly. an unbelievable number of seat belt buckle replacements in the life of this vehicle. since seat belt issues like this illuminate the check airbag indicator light, i have to believe this is a safety factor related problem. *tr

I was involved in an accident and noticed that the air bags never deployed. i noticed that the passenger air bag sensor light kept flashing and now it never comes on. now my air bag sensor light in the dash came on so i took it in to have it looked at and the mechanic told me that there was a recall by hyundai to repair the issue. i called the dealer to see if they were aware of the recall and they told me that not all of the cars were recalled for this issue. so now my air bags have been deactivated because of the bad sensor and is not safe to be driving. i'm looking to get this issue covered by a hyundai dealer. *tr

On or around 11nov12, the air bag warning light for the passenger seat became illuminated on my 2006 hyundai sonata. my local mechanic says the code represents a problem with the air bag sensor in that seat, and a recall was issued in 2008 for this problem. however, hyundai claims that my vehicle is not covered by the recall despite its falling within the model years. the cost to repair could be in excess of $1,000.00us, and hyundai will not cover this under the aforementioned recall notice. from reading online, this appears to be a prevalent issue with this model, and i submit that a new recall ought to be considered or the existing one ought to be expanded.

Driver's airbag light on dash stayed on, and the pass airbag light goes on and off at varying times (w/pass in seat). in 2010, in the summer (?) the dealer replaced a brake light switch under recall. the car most likely had under 80,000 miles on it. at that time i told the dealer's (van horn hyundai of fond du lac, wi) service person about the pass airbag light and i was told there was no warranty on it. when the pass light would come on i would stop the car and turn the ignition key to the off position. after restarting the car the light would usually stay off. *tr

The air bag light on dashboard stayed on while driving. the front passenger seat belt light blinked on and off. the only way to make it stop was to fasten the passenger side seat belt. i took the car to dealership and was told that the ocs (occupant classification system) sensor in front passenger seat had burnt itself out. failure to replace sensor would cause airbags to fail. did some investigating and found that a recall had been issued for this sensor back in 2008. the dealership informed me that my car was not part of the recall. my vin number was not on the list. same make, same model--not part of recall???? the repair cost $1000 for a new seat. how many other owners of hyundai vehicles are not part of recalls? *tr

June 2008, seatbelt light & airbag light come on intermittently for passenger seat. code b1706, passenger buckle pretensioner. part was replaced by hyundai, under warranty. august 2012, mileage 45,000 airbag warning light on intermittently, then permanently. code b1706 passenger buckle pretensioner, again. contacted both corporate hyundai and dealer and told no warranty on this item and no known problems with it. seems that repeated failures of a component of the srs is a major safety issue. vehicle has low mileage and passenger seat is rarely used, yet buckle pretensioner has failed twice!! i have noticed repeated entries regarding this problem on the 2006 sonata. if you are experiencing this issue be sure to file a complaint here, even if you have resolved the problem. *tr

My car started having problems in may that when i look them up, are listed as issues that have been recalled by hyundai yet when i contacted hyundai these were not open recalls on my vehicle. my abs/esc light comes on and off. if i turn my car off and re-start it then the light will be gone, only to come on again at some point when i'm driving. i just got new brakes in january and my brakes seem to be working fine. the only time i was concerned was during a road trip when the light was off, but came on when i slammed on my brakes on the highway. my air bag light came on around the same time the brake light started consistently coming on. this light does not go away. i have also been told that i have a back break light that is out yet when i took it to get a new bulb it was working just fine. then the next day when backing up, i could see my car's reflection in a window and that light was out, indicating some sort of electrical short. to top it all off, my check engine light came on today and i will be taking my car in this afternoon to see what that is. my car is up to date on all maintenance. in the last 7 months i have had new brakes, new spark plugs, and a new battery. i'm not sure why these lights are on but it is very frustrating to see recalls for some of these issues, and they just aren't on my car specifically. *tr

Air bag warning light-remains on. separately the passenger seat belt sensor light flashes until the passenger seat belt is connected-cinched. my auto mechanic reports that hyundai vehicles have a problem with the seat belt connection sensor. another mechanic reports that a defective seat occupant sensor may be defective. both mechanics advise that this should be a hyundai safety recall. it is possible that i have had defective air bags since prior to 10/8/12 at which time i reported to hyundai motors usa and a local dealer that the airbag warning light remains on. hyundai motors usa at that time denied responsibility. hyundai motors today 7/23/12 continued to deny responsibility. this now has come to special attention as the vehicle, registered in vermont, due to the air bag warning light remaining on, will not pass new vermont inspection regulations. a complaint today has also been filed with hyundai motors usa; case #[xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

*tr

While on highway, dash board air bag light illuminated in early april. did not go out. took it to dealer in early may, they gave me a code b1448. said needed to have $2200 repair done. found tech service bulletin on line that got the seat reprogrammed in mid-may at dealer cost. fix was to remove seat and send it back for reprogramming. early june: now, both dash air bag light and flashing passenger seat light are on when no one is in the passenger seat. only way to get the flashing to stop is to hook the seat belt. second visit to dealer documented that code is the same for the dash light. no explanation for passenger light. no path forward from hyundai corporate, according to dealer. now what?.

I just had to get the driver side seat belt buckle replaced because the check air bag light was on. i've seen many other reports similar to the one i'm reporting here. a year and a half ago i had to get the passenger seat belt buckle replaced for the same issue. i was told that without getting these replaced when i did the air bag would not deploy, which is a huge safety issue. searching nhtsa found quite a few similar reports, and searching the internet found a ton more. this appears to be a defect impacting the safety of at least this car's make and model as the air bags would not deploy, and potentially other makes or models (i only checked my own). i urge the nhtsa to investigate the issue due to the frequency of complaints and the impact to the passengers' safety.

Airbag light on dashboard was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a local hyundal dealer shop . the technician performed diagnostics and found that occupant classification system (ocs) in passenger seat was defected. technician indicated that this can be fixed by replacing a whole passenger seat, which will cost about $1100. i don't see why i should have to pay for something that was not due to wear. 85% of the time, passenger seat is not in use. i find it curious that there are so many complaints about this exact problem, on this model, and that the failure has occurred for many at between 50k and 75k miles. please investigate!

Hyundai sonata 2006 about 89k miles that failed mass state inspection because airbag warning light on dash board was illuminated. the vehicle not in any accidents. brought car to dealer for diagnostics and after approximately $100 fee was told the seatbelts needed to be replaced at $700 total and sensor pad on passenger front seat needed to be replaced for $1000. i inquired if known issue for this vehicle and was told no and these things happen. i am quite leery of making these types of replacements when dealer cannot tell me why it happened and chance it will just reoccur. i have noticed same complaints filed for this model and year and this mileage. i bought preowned after 1 owner when car less than a year old and have never been in any collisions with this vehicle. pretty big replacement parts that i would never think to research prior to purchasing a vehicle.

The air bag light stays on..the dealer says it's the sensor under the passenger seat which is a $1,400 repair. when you sit in the passenger seat the airbag warning goes on and off but the light on the dash stays on all the time. a recall was issued for this problem. the recall number is 08v161000. i went to the dealer and they said my car was not part of the recall. i called hyundai and they told me only cars built in may and june of 2006 would be honored for the recall. my car was built in july 2006 (according to hyundai corporate office). why would they only recall cars built in may and june? obviously they did not know the problem existed during the production of my car? what makes my car seat parts different from those produced in may and june? i asked if they had part numbers that were in the recall and if they changed design in july? they could not or would not answer me. my bet is they issued the recall to satisfy a few if any and turn-down all others to save money since this is a costly repair. from what i understand the seat has to be removed and sent out to be calibrated (cost estimate $1,400). the bottom line is my air bags will not deploy if the light is on and hyundai has a long long history of air bag issues. what can i do to get them to honor my car in the recall? if i were involved in a collision my airbags would not deploy which could cause serious injury.

One morning that i started the car, my airbag light wouldn't go off after the start-up. it has been 5 months since this light came on, and i brought it to a hyundai dealer's service center. after their diagnostic, they said it's a sensor in the driver's seat belt had shorten out and it's causing airbag sign to come on. the mechanic also told me that this means that in case of accident that my driver-side airbag wouldn't inflate. this seems like a common problem after reading several websites about this particular model and year's airbag light problem, but hyundai is keep denying their responsibility. another thing that it's shocking to me is that in case a person is driving without a seatbelt, airbag wouldn't inflate, just as an electrical failure in seatbelt buckle can cause malfunction in deployment of the airbag system. this doesn't make any sense to me..why would a car maker would ever design a system like this? to punish people who are driving without a seatbelt? when i asked this question, the hyundai dealer representative said that he doesn't make a car but there to sell it!

We own a 2006 hyundai sonata that has an air bag warning light on. our dealer has tried 3 times unsuccessfully to fix it. a month or two ago our abs and air bag lights came on. we paid to have it fixed and a week or so later the air bag light came on and went back off a few times over the next week. it then stayed on so we took it back to the dealer. we were told it was the front passenger seat belt connector that needed replaced again. they replaced it again free of charge and about a week later it came back on again. a few weeks went by and the light remained on. we took it back to the dealer and they said the part was defective so they would replace it again free of charge. less than a week went by and the light again came on. we had it back in to the dealer today, the fourth time for the same problem and now they say it is the same part but this time its the drivers side instead of the passenger side. we believe the root of the problem is and always has been in adjusting the position of the driver's seat. thinking back, every time the light has come back on it has been on my lunch hour when i decided to eat lunch in the car and i moved my seat back all the way. i have read numerous complaints online about the same issue and cases where airbags did not deploy in a crash. hyundai needs to take responsibility and fix this safety issue.

I have a 2006 hyundai sonata that had my airbag and right seat belt light come on at the exact time. researching this online i see i am not the first person to mention this defect with the 2006 sonata and feel this problem should be addressed. this is a major issue leaving the driver with no airbags in the case of an accident. the cost to get this fixed is around $400.00 and i am told by the dealerships they know it is an issue with this model and that many customers have filed complaints regarding it. it's a defect having to do with the passenger seat/seat belt. this can result in someones death if not addressed and needs to not be ignored, but corrected before it does.

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata (82k mileage). the driver side seat belt warning light came on and now stays on constantly. based on a web search this issue appears to be a common problem with this model and one that is a major safety hazard. [the reason for the visibility complaint, this vehicle also had both driver side and passenger side sunvisor fail (another safety issue for another time)] i took the car to a hyundai dealer who did not consider the problem within warranty. the dealer did note that the cost to repair could be as much as $1500.00 since the entire seat and safety belt system may require replacement. follow up calls to hyundai found that, though there are hundreds and possibly thousands of similar complaints, they have elected not to issue a recall related to the problem as they did for the passenger side. this is a very popular car model with a major safety issue that needs investigation. i strongly suspect your investigation will arrive at the same conclusion and with your help maybe hyundai will issue a recall before someone is fatally injured. here is a web link with numerous similar complaints: http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2006/hyundai/sonata/frontal+airbag thank you in advance for your help!

The driver airbag sign lit up in dashboard. took it to the dealer and they said that the buckle sensors had failed. i asked how this happened and they said, there is nothing you could have done to prevent this . it happens and you need to change the seat belt buckle assembly. i see a lot of people with 2006 sonata have this problem.

In 2008 i received a letter from hyundai stating my car was being recalled due to the airbag sensor. the letter stated only those cars which has the airbag light illuminated are affected. at the time the airbag light never came on. in 2010 the airbag light came on, and i had the car serviced at a hyundai dealer, and the dealership claimed the light was on because of a bad battery. now a month ago the light came on again. i again took it to the dealership, and they are claiming it is the ocs sensor in the front passenger seat that is bad. i informed them of the recall, but they have no record of my vehicle being part of that recall. i had contacted hyundai corporate, and they advised me that particular campaign was no longer in their system, so they have no way of knowing if my carl was part of the recall or not. hyundai refuses to fix the problem as my car is now 5k miles out of warranty, and the dealership has quoted me over $1k to fix the problem.

2006 hyundai sonata air bag warning light on instrument panel is on. told by mechanic the passenger seat cushion needs to be replaced.. it would cost us $2,500.00. this is a safty feature, and i have heard and read many complaints on this issue. i feel hyundai should be responsible for the repairs due to their poor design and the repair cost is more than 10% of the cost of a new car.

Air bag light has come on for the third time since we've owned the car. 1st being at 30,000 (repaired at dealership under warranty) then at 58,000 (repaired at dealership under warranty) now at 67,000 the light has come on again and the vehicle is no longer under warranty for this issue. i understand that i need to file the complaint through this forum. i'm unclear based on the numerous complaints i have seen on this forum and others why hyundai is not being held accountable for this obvious defect.

The air bag light on my dashboard has been on for about two weeks now. upon research, this seems to be a very common problem with the hyundai sonatas, especially the 2006 models. this is not the first time this has happened. the light will be on and then turn off. months later, it will turn on and stay on again.

The driver's side air bag light stays lit at all times. the dealer states that this inactivates the air bag. this is not covered by the warranty. further research shows that this is a fairly common problem with this model and year. shouldn't his prompt a recall since it is a safety issue?

The driver side airbag warning light turned on and has been on for about 3 months and the passenger airbag light is not working properly either. i am worried that the airbags will not deploy in an accident involving myself or a passenger. a lot of people with this car year and model have been reporting to have the same problem.

Dash board air bag light came on and remained on. took to a mechanic who stated it was an error code that was not longer active. a sensor must have set it off, but there was no longer a problem. a few weeks later airbag light came on again. took vehicle to hyundai dealership who stated occupant classification system (ocs) or sensor that was part of system registered an error at some point in the past few days and that is why the light went on. they stated there was no longer an error, but that the sensor must be going bad and would need to be replaced before it failed. reason being, once the sensor failed, the air bags (at least passenger air bag, potentially whole system shut off so driver as well?) wouldn't deploy in the case of an accident because system would shut off as a result of a sensor failure. dealership stated that sensor could not be replaced individually, but that the whole passenger seat cushion would have to be replaced. the sensor is part of the ocs system. the quoted cost for the part (seat cushion with electronic sensing system) would be around $1500 total ($1350 for the part, $150 for the labor). as of now air bag light not on, sensor hasn't failed yet. once it does, need to replace if want air bag system to deploy. this seems like a very serious safety issue that should be addressed by a recall. i have read hundreds of customer complaints online that have the 2006 hyundai sonata with this problem and haven't had it fixed. as a result there are a lot of people driving around in a vehicle that some if not all of the air bags won't deploy in (and most if not all of them don't realize it disables the air bag). this design flaw could result in serious injury or death. all information i received in regards to airbag light issue was from the service department at a hyundai dealership. this issue needs to be investigated and a recall needs to be issued.

I have 2006 hyundai sonata and the airbag light just came on.air bag light came around 67k miles. brought into dealer and was told it was rf buckle & ocs failure total estimated damage to my wallet = $1,700, after i paid the $105 for them to hold onto my car all day long just to plug a computer into the car which reads the codes and spits out the problem.it have to be recall for this, how many complains need to be fill up to force then to have a safe issue fix?

My airbag warning light will not go off. i woke up one day and started the car and it lit up, went off then came right back on. this is a manufacture's defect and it should have been corrected long ago. i spoke with a local dealership and they told me that my vin# was not under recall. i believe that hyundai purposely use's cheap material and does mediocre work at best so customer's will be forced to come out of pocket to make there's fat. my inspection is due and there is no way i will be able to pass.

The air bag light in my '06 sonata gls came on the day after it was inspected in september. after doing some internet research, it appears this is a very common problem with this year/make/model. that being said, it is clearly a manufacturer issue and should be corrected via recall.

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata that is plagued with the passenger air bag off light (even with my 120 lb wife in the seat) along with the dashboard air bag light that just turned on yesterday. as i see on the internet, this year along with newer models seem to be plagued with this problem. response from corporate is, as usual to the consumer, it's your tough luck, buddy. response from dealers are open up your wallet and we'll pretend to fix it. this is a hideous and extremely dangerous situation that deserves a recall of the utmost importance. the usual question, of course, is how many deaths or injuries will it take to make this company step up and fix this extremely common problem with their product?

I own a hyundai sonata 2006, and just before it got to 80,000 miles, the air bag light suddenly went on. it has stayed on for a week as of 9/25/10. i looked it up online and it seems many people have had this same issue with the hyundai sonatas and it is very costly to fix. i think this is a safety issue that should be looked into with hyundai, if it happens repeatedly.

Lights across instrument cluster will not go off including: esc off, check engine, airbags and abs. there is also a visibility issue regarding the sun visor on the driver side. these are all issues that i have seen many other people are having as well and are potentially dangerous.

The air bag light has come on, which will not let the air bags deploy if an accident. problem was a sensor in the passenger seat belt. had it replaced, within 2 months and $600 later, the light came back on. will not get fixed again until a recall is made, many other people have the same problem. too expensive, and should be recalled out of safety of people in vehicle.

Re. 2006 hyundai sonata (currently approx 71,00 miles) - was part of past recall on passenger side airbag light staying lit when passenger in seat. brought to dealer - they couldn't replicate problem at the time. wouldn't fix problem (replace seat) due to not being able to replicate. light still comes on intermittently when passenger in seat. addressed with dealer and hyundai corporate - corporate backed dealer. shortly after 60,000 warranty expired, drivers side visor broke - falls down when driving - safety hazard. called dealer - $45 just to buy - not installed. i have seen numerous complaints on here and other websites re. same issue. should be part of covered recall. recently drivers air bag light began illuminating. car battery needed replacing - thought this might be the problem - still illuminating after replacing battery. called dealer - must pay diagnostic fee (i believe $88) just to look at it and then repairs which from my understanding can be costly. have also seen numerous reports on this site and others of same problem. should be safety recall also.

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata. i bought it new from henderson hyundai in henderson, nv. my car has now 73,831 miles and i have had every required maintenance done to my car by the dealership that sold it to me. a week ago the driver's airbag light came on so decided to take it to the dealer so they can fix it. to my surprise they said i would need to replace the passenger seat, the whole seat, and that it would cost me $1800 to repair. he also mentioned something about the insulation in the wiring being gone. my car has never been into an accident so the airbags have never been deployed. right now, because of this problem, none of the airbags in my car will deploy should i have an accident. i tried to make the dealership understand this is a safety issue hyundai should fix since it is obvious this is a matter of a faulty system and not normal wear and tear. i can not afford paying $1800 for something they can not even guarantee will not happen again. i strongly believe hyundai motor inc should be held liable for this type of poor craftsmanship that makes driving my car unsafe.

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata which i purchased in 2005. it is just under 79,000 miles and the air bag light has come on and no matter what has not turned off. this is a safety issue which hyundai should handle and not force people to pay for at such high prices. there are numerous other complaints about the same issue and some action must be taken with hyundai to get them to stop putting cheap parts into their vehicles.

The airbag light on my 2006 hyandai sonata has been on for months and will not go off. also, the passenger seat light is on almost all the time, even when there is no passenger sitting in the seat. my dealer said this would cost $1,700 to fix. however, based on an internet search, it seems like many hyandai models have this problems with the airbag.

Computer problems for several months now. my car will stop a turn mid-turn and the dash lights will flash on momentarily. the wheel will bind and i have to brake hard to regain control of the wheel so i can complete the turn. this is always at a moderate speed, below the speed limit posted for the on/off ramp, etc. this has happened at least a dozen times with each time almost resulting in a crash due to losing control of my steering wheel. i took it to the dealership, they blew me off and said i needed to change my automatic transmission fluid. i had 3 other shops look at it and no one could determine cause. i had the grease fittings inspected as well as tie rods/ball joints. all were reported good. my airbag light has been on since about 40,000 miles. i took my car in, they said there was a leak in my sunroof, fixed it under warranty and turned the airbag light off. it came on again after 50,000 miles (after the expiration of my warranty) and has been on ever since. i took it into the dealership and they said it was a faulty seat belt clip and i needed to pay about $300 to have it fixed. i've done a lot of research and i'm seeing that many many hyundai sonata owners are experiencing the same things....airbag lights and computer problems.

I owned 4 sonatas and two currently. the airbag warning light is illuminated in both 2006's with the passenger airbag warning light going off and off intermittently. the dealer fixed the one with 60k+ miles only to have it happen again. the other one has 103k and the dealer told me they knew the problem and it would be $1500 for parts (original prob was thought to be a low voltage). the one with 60k has the problem again. called hyundai corp and they opened a case, called me two days later and told me there is nothing they can do. i really want to buy a 2010 and told them i could not knowing this problem exists and hyundai refuses to assist. *tr

My airbag light came on. i took the car to the dealership/service garage and was told that there was a problem with a sensor in my seatbelt/airbag and it cost $400.00 to correct. i was unable to pass the va safety inspection with the light on, so i had to pay for the repair. sixteen months later, the light came on again! i returned to the service dept, they ran a diagnositc and told me that the same problem had occurred. i refused to pay for the exact same repair. this is obviously a problem with the hyaundai brand and they should fix it. i searched the interent and found that numerous other individuals are experiencing the same problem. please help! must i be expected to pay $400.00 to correct this problem every year in order to pass inspection? this is not fair and hyaundai should make this right. i'm told that my airbags won't deploy if i become involved in an accident.

Hyundai sonata passenger and main air bag failure 2006 vehicle. brought vehicle in for passenger air bag failure/ recall. hyundai state all working ok, air bag still not working. hyundai did nothing to correct problem. adult sits in front passenger and air bag light still does not work all the time. i am driving an unsafe vehicle were i don't feel confident the passenger air bag will deploy when it has too. what is hyundai waiting for, a death due to the arrogance? november 2009 main air bag indicators come on.hyundai does diagnostic and tells me seat belt tensioner failure. they refuse to pay for it, they replace seat belt buckles and tensioners. main air bag problem corrected but passenger air bag still intermittent problem. i have been in contact with hyundai consumer affairs and they refuse to pay for the repairs since it is out of warranty. the car was less than 3 years old with 74,353 miles . is this a safety issue or a warranty issue? i paid for the repairs but i never know if the air bag system will work properly. what rights do i have in this matter since hyundai is not taking responsibility? also there is a recall on the hyundai azer 2006-2009 for failure of the seat belt tension sensors. this is the same problem that i experienced in my 2006 sonata. who is to say that they used the same part in my vehicle? i would appreciate if you contact me and let me know how i get reimbursed for the repairs and get my car save again. *tr

That's the problem there is no serious event leading up to the problem. it is happening because theses cars are not built for safety. i have had my car for 5 months and there are some serious problems, hyundai and you all may not think so but it is. if it was your car that had all of these problems you would be complaining also. problems that i have with my hyundai sonata: passenger airbag light on every time you crank up, airbag light in the dash board on, check engine light (sensors going bad in the car). if its not equipped for the car don't try something that's going to have people spending out of the pockets and then paying for a car also. recalls on 06 hyundai sonata what's the purpose if it cant be fixed everything on the recall list is happening to my car. if i had a second chance i would not have bout that

Airbag light / problem. took car to car pros hyundai, seattle wa on aurora. advised them my airbag light all of a sudden stays on. they advised me that it was seat belt issue and some wiring under the floor board. hyundai advised me that the air bags wouldn't work if i was in a accident. asked them if this was under warranty, they said only up to 60, 000 miles. and my car is over that. i advised why aren't all seat belt functions and airbags covered through the life of the car. doesn't make sense. its the law that i have to wear a seatbelt, well it should be a law that the seat belts are working properly and airbags for the life of vehicle. *tr

My 2006 hyundai sonata has the air bag lite on after i start the vehicle. i took the vehicle into the dealership and they informed me after a diagnostic check that my seat belt assembly l/f preteensioner has high resistance causing the air bag light to stay on. this item is not covered by the warranty and would cost in excess of $400.00. my complaint is that i feel this item should be covered by the manufacturer. the hyundai dealership technician informed me that the item would cause the air bags to not deploy in an accident and can cause the seatbelt to automatically release. this definitely seems like its a safety issue item. my vehicle has not been in any accidents and is well taken care of so the only cause for malfunction to an item like that would be defective manufacturing of the seatbelt equipment. my vehicle was purchased brand new and although it has high mileage from highway miles it has been well maintained. please take the time to look into this matter before someone is seriously injured in an accident. *tr

Since i have had the car i have complained that when my 25 year old daughter sits in the front seat the air bag is not activated. she weights approx. 125lbs. they told me that they will not fix the seat cushion because she does not weigh enough. that's crazy she has no problem in any other car. i thought that's why they sent out this recall when a small structure adult sits in the front seat the ocs does not properly activate. healy brothers hyundai said that if the tech sits in the seat and the light goes off they will not fix the problem but that's not what the recall is about. it's about a small adult. i feel very uncomfortably when she is in the car and the air bag is not working. is there any way i can have the ocs reprogrammed as the recall suggests. *tr

My 2006 hyundai sonata lost control after driving through a patch of black ice. as a result, there was a collision with a fire hydrant, which cause severe front end damage to the car, as well as the fire hydrant. my driver side air bag never deployed. i have injured my right thumb from the impact of the collision, resulting in a torn ligament and a great deal of pain. i believe this injury could have been avoided if the air bag had deployed. the car still remains in a repair shop, where none of the replacement parts seem to line up correctly. my insurance company and the repair shop are both aware of the air bag not deploying. the repair shop claimed they can not look into the cause of why the air bag never deployed. the insurance company could not provide any help either. i won't bother consulting the hyundai dealer since they can not provide any solutions, from what i've read, as well as having other unrelated problems with the incompetence of the dealership in the past. *tr

Air bag off light illuminates intermittently when passenger (130+ lbs) is seated properly in front passenger seat, indicating the air bag would not go off. have had this problem repeatedly and randomly since purchasing the vehicle 9/05, and have requested action at each warranty servicing. (22,500 mi currently) each time the dealer service department claims the diagnostics do not find a problem and the air bag sensor is working properly. they say there are no service bulletins or recalls from hyundai on this problem. however there are at least 15 complaints on this website about this problem as of 12/06. i am very upset by this apparent lack of caring on hyundai's part about the safety of their passengers. just because the intermittent problem can't be reproduced at the dealer's does not mean that the passengers are not experiencing the problem. there has got to be a way to isolate the problem even if it can't be observed in the moment, even if it means replacing the parts in the sequence till the problem goes away. *nm

 1) front air bag passenger seat sensor randomly works when my wife is sitting in seat (she weighs approx. 130lbs). it's been a problem since vehicle purchase in 06/2006. 2) i have to keep stopping vehicle to shut off and restart to clear off light (and hope it actually is on when the light is out). consequences is that if it doesn't deploy if i ever have an accident, my wife could get killed (or anyone else in the passenger seat). 3) i have had the vehicle in the garage 3-4 times to have it fixed. they replaced the seat cushion once and it didn't fix the problem. hyundai wants the seat sent to them (so they can re-program it. i want a new seat sent to me and replaced. i don't know what they do to re-program it, but if i ever trade the vehicle, it might not work for the new car owners (not a very good solution). if the light stays on (meaning the air bag is off) and my wife doesn't move, i turn off the car and restart it, the light will go off 1/2 the time. they blame it on the way she sits in the seat. but if it goes out after restarting the car and she doesn't move, then this doesn't hold true. incident date is approx for first occurrence. it has happened too many times to list all days (probably over 100 times so far). vin can be provided if necessary. *jb

03/03/201133668
My 2006 hyundai sonata has only 33,600 when suddenly the air bag light on the dashboard came on and stayed on. i went the dealer who told me that hyundai doesn't cover this under their extended warranties. in looking up this problem on the internet i found many hyundai owners with the same complaint. i beleive this is no doubt a safety issue which hyundai has choosen to ignore and should be made to be held reponsible. if the air bag is malfunctioning then those riding in the car can be seriously injuried during an accident.

2006 hyundai sonata, i've had the driver air bag light repaired twice (under warranty) and now it's on again in the two years that i've had the car (purchased in late 2008). i was simply driving on the interstate and the drivers side air bag light came on. i don't see how hyundai is able to sell a car with such a flimsy air bag system. unfortunately the car just went over warranty so it may be an expensive fix if it's not related to one of the previous issues that caused the air bag light to go off, which the dealer will fix free of charge. i've had a 1993 nissan sentra which never had a problem with the air bags (sold in 2008) and a 1997 toyota camry which is still in operation which has never had problems.

Passenger side air bag light has come on. passenger air bag on/off light flashes back and forth when the seat is occupied. have seen many reports of same on the internet - same year, make and model of automobile. it is reported to be very expensive to repair but sounds like a recall is in order as many vehicles have been found to share the problem not associated with normal wear and tear.

On my 2006 sonata the sensor in the drivers side seat belt breaks, turning on air bag notification light. i took the car into crain hyundai of north little rock and they stated this is a common issue with this model and it wasn't covered under warranty according to the mechanic at crain this will stop the seatbelt from working properly and it will turn off the air bag. this is two major safety violations. 1 seat belt not functioning properly, 2 the air bag is now turned off. this makes the car worthless as far as resale value and a major safety issue.

I own a 2006 hyundai sonata which i bought new. in 2007 i found a crack in the front passenger dash where the cutout for the airbag was located. i took it to the dealership in sierra vista, az and they told me that many of these vehicles have a problem with the perforation in the dash causing the airbag to eventually come out of the dash. it was replaced. three years later it has happened again the airbag perforation is basically cracking causing the exposure of the airbag compartment in the dash of the same vehicle i previously had replaced. this seems to be a safety issue that is common in this vehicle. thank you,

My 2006 hyundai sonata airbag sensor for the front passenger seat will not activate if a female adult sits in the seat. the dealer refuses to repair it; various inappropriate responses are given, such as poor posture, inadequate weight or have the passenger sit in the back. it has been a problem since i purchased the car new. i have made repeated visits to my dealer, but no solution has been provided. in one case, the dealer held the car for over a week and supposedly sent the seat back to hyundai, but nothing changed. during my most recent discussion with the dealers service manager, he said that the sensor would only activate if the person in the front passenger seat weighed over 130 pounds. this eliminates me - i weigh 115 pounds - or most of my female friends. my daughter weighs over 130 pounds, but it does not activate for her, either. most other auto manufacturers have a weight trigger of 90 pounds. the dealer said that hyundai would not or could not set the activation/trigger weight at less than 130 pounds. this means i cannot have most of my guests or relatives in the front passenger seat. this design cheats a large number of adults of airbag protection, and creates an unsafe vehicle. a hyundai recall falsely claims that hyundai will address the situation, but this is only for show - no work is done and the company instructs the dealers not to repair the seats. the dealers are instructed to say that failure to activate is not a defect, and that the company considers an activation weight of over 130 pounds to be acceptable. the dealers are also told to test the seat themselves - this means a large male is chosen to sit in the front seat, which then activates. *tr

At first it was the radio, turning on and off by itself when i would try to lower the volume it would be louder. my headlights would go out and turn on again, my emergency brake light will turn on as my car would stop in the middle of the street. air bag deployment sign is on and the bag it is not deployed. the abs, esc and other glow lights will turn on; sometimes i cant roll down the windows or lock the car with the button. now my car will not start, no power and it resets my clock. i have gone to the dealership twice and they are greedy money hungry

The airbag light wouldn't go out and the dealer has indicated that there was a failure in the sensor in the drivers side seat belt which will cost $400 to replace. have never had a problem like this in any other car i have every driven. due to cost have chosen to drive without a airbag on the drivers side. *tr

Airbag light on which means airbag is not working. called/contacted hyundai in guam where we purchased our sonata 2006 all to no avail. they just told us that as soon as our car is outside of guam, our warranty is no longer in effect. german does not honor the warranty since we did not purchase our car from a german dealer. we purchased sonata 2006 and later that year we were relocated in germany: hohenfels army post. *tr

*tr

I received a recall letter advising of a problem with the passenger airbag system. the airbag warning light was illuminated on the dash of my 2006 hyundia sonata. i followed hyundia's instructions and took my vehicle to the dealer where i purchased my vehicle, colonial hyundai, downingtown, pa. they inspected the vehicle on december 8, 2008 and advised me the problem was not associated with the recall but was rather due to another part. i was informed i would need a replacement passenger seat at a cost of $1,409.96. at that time, they recalibrated the passenger airbag system and the air bag warning light went out. however, the light returned to illumination days later. for the past three months i have been driving my vehicle with this airbag warning light illuminated. *tr

Not sure if this is the right forum for this issue, if not, please direct me where i can lodge my complaint. hyundai motors provided a warranty repair notice for my 2006 hyundai sonata gls stating that the passenger airbag may not deploy under certain conditions. when i went to the dealer where i purchased the car (75 miles away from my house), the dealer said that they could not diagnose the problem unless i brought the person who sits in the passenger seat that causes the airbag light to not stay indicated. the person is my daughter, and pulling her out of school just to indicate that the passenger air bag is malfunctioning is not a reasonable expectation so that the produce defect can be repaired. the passenger air bag sensor will not indicate correctly if the vehicle is running and my daughter sits in the car. *tr

There is a recall on my car for the ocs , occupant classification system . its what tells the car to turn on the passenger side airbag when an adult is in the seat. i took my car into the dealer for repairs like the letter stated and was turned away saying it works fine, even though i had an adult in the seat and the system said the air bag was turned off . after a few calls to hyundai motor america, the dealer decided to send the passenger seat in for testing . i received my car back from the shop on 10-27-08. the following day my 19 year old was in the seat and the light was illuminated saying passenger air bag off i called hyundai motor america and was told they would rectify the situation. today is 11-17-08 and i have yet to receive a phone call regarding this matter. the dealership is refusing to help me , stating that we fixed it once and its not our problem anymore i am at my wits end as to what to do now . no one seems to want to fix the issue. they simply tell me to deal with it . *tr

60-70% of the time a smaller person sits in my front passenger seat the passenger airbag off remains lit. i took the car in for the first time in 2006, right after buying the car, to have it looked at which time i was told they couldn't recreate the situation. i have 3 different friends/relatives/coworkers who are able to vouch that when they have sat in the seat at various times the light has remained lit. i took the vehicle in today pursuant to the recall notice and yet again i was told that they could not recreate the scenario and so my vehicle is not going to be fixed. i was told that they have had 3 cars tested at this dealership so far and none have had the defect detected even though one other owner complained that her vehicle has had the problem in the past. i don't believe hyundai has done enough to detect which cars have this defect, nor informed their dealerships on how to detect the problem as they are simply picking people out of their employee base to sit in the seat. the woman who was going to test my seat today said she weighed 150 lbs. i'm not sure that really qualifies as a small statured person, although they did end up testing it with a lighter weight person after i spoke up. *tr

2006 hyundai sonata gls: a short time after purchasing vehicle, the ocs passenger airbag off light would come on with the seat occupied by my wife, weight 150 + lbs. i took it in many times to my dealer. they made several attempts to fix it (unsuccessfully) i complained to the national headquarters, more attempts to fix (unsuccessfully. i was also told after submitting the vin # that it was not included in the recall. just about 2 weeks ago i was told by national office that they could not and would no longer attempt to repair the system. i was told after i kept expressing my disbelief that i could submit the problem to the national bbb dispute resolution, which i promptly did. strangely, today 9/ 06/08, i received a motor recall notice (after being told by at least 4 hyundai personnel that my vehicle was not eligible for recall. ) after 2 years, the ocs still deactivates the passenger air bag when the seat is occupied. this happens sporadically and usually when we are on the freeway where stopping, jiggling in the seat, bouncing up and down are not possible (all suggestions by service dept.) my concern to everyone i have spoken to for the past 2 years has been and still is that if the airbag deactivates and we were to have an accident, this could be catastrophic. i have offered to hold them faultless if they would just disable the ocs system and leave the passenger air bag operational as we have no small children or grandchildren. i am hoping one more time that there is a real solution to this problem and will take the vehicle in first thing monday morning. i was told by my dealer not to bring the car back unless i had a recall notice. our last word from hyundai was that their conclusion is that the problem is our fault, not the vehicles, because of the way we sit in the seat. *tr

I had noticed at first the crack in the dashboard in 2006 right after i had purchased my car. they replaced the dashboard, but not correctly the first time. when i finally got my car back, i attempted to turn the headlights in my car on, at that time all of the interior lights of my car went out. there were wires that were apparently switched. at this time i called the dealership again and informed them of the new problem. this issue was subsequently fixed. after they replaced the dashboard i started to have probelms with the driver and passenger side air bag lights going on.the turned them off and stated it was my fault. about three months later both air bag lights came on again. at this time i took it to another dealer who looked up information on the computer and stated that it must have been my fault again. someone went out to the car and shut them off but no paperwork was written up. then another 3 months later the lights came on again and there was another crack in the dashboard around the passenger side air bag. i called the original dealer again and they ordered another dashboard for the car. at this time i asked them again to check to see about the airbag lights. they have had my car for a week now (i still do not have it back). while all the air bag lights issue was happening, there is also another issue with the abs and esc (electronic stability control) lights also coming on and not going off. i have been informed the the abs and esc light was coming on because there is a braking issue with the car. and the airbag lights that keep coming on and staying on is because of a sensor issue with the passenger side seat. they are not sure why this keeps happening. they are also not sure what caused the brake issue with the abs and esc lights. *jb

Hyundai sonat gls/ passenger airbag deactivates when seat occupied. we purchased a 2006 hyundai sonata gls in july of 2006, it has been an excellent car except for one extremely dangerous safety defect. shortly after we purchased the car, the passenger seat airbag deactivation sign would come on when my wife was in the seat. the manual states that the airbag deactivates when the seat is unoccupied or a passenger less thatn 50 lbs. my wife weighs 150 lbs plus. i took it to the dealer, humble hundai: 1st visit: i was told by the service manager that he checked it and nothing was wrong, so he could not fix it ----problem continued 2nd visit: told him we were on trip of 50 miles each way and light came on and stayed on. he said he got three different people of various sizes to ride in it and the light would not come on 3rd... called the national hyundai headquarters.... young man acted like he didn't have any idea what i was talking about 4- started on trip, light came on, so..decided to take it and show it to service dept. took it by dealer, mgr. not in.. insisted that service person document the fact that he saw the light on. 5: called hyundai national headquarters again, asked for a supervisor, she assured me that the problem would be alleviated 6. service manager called me and asked me to bring the car in. we took the car in. his solution was to take a seat out of a car on the new car lot and swap it out with my seat. 7. the problem is better but the light still comes on occasionally, we have tried all the tricks they suggested to get the light off when it comes on. conclusion: i told each person above that if we were on the freeway at f.w. speeds, had an accident and the air bag failed, i was holding them responsible. i have put this in writing. hyundai considers the problem solved. it is not. i even asked them to disconnect the safety feature which causes the air bag to deactivate. they refused.

Passenger airbag off indicator works normally except under the following conditions concerning the front passenger seat: 1. passenger seat is occupied - indicator is off. 2. passenger temporarily leaves seat - indicator is on. 3. passenger returns to seat - indicator remains on. 4. indicator remains on until the ignition switch is turned off and then on. obviously, the passenger is in mortal danger if the passenger airbag off condition escapes notice under these conditions. i asked service personnel about this and the answer was, oh, that's normal. it may be normal but it is dangerous design or an error. *jb

Sonata front passenger air bag sensor problem the air bag sensor light on the dashboard does not function correctly for a 120 pound person as a front seat passenger. if you turn the engine on and then a passenger sits down in the front passenger seat, the sensor light assumes no one is sitting in the front passenger seat and the air bag won't release if there is an accident. if a front seat passenger sits in the seat and the car engine is turned on the sensor light works. but if the passenger gets out of the seat when the car is stopped while the engine is still on and then returns to the seat, the sensor light does not work again.*jb

To whom it may concern, i am writing this in regards to a service problem i am encountering concerning my 2006 hyundai sonata. i have taken the vehicle in for service two times for a problem with the passenger air bag system, and two times now i have been told they cannot find anything wrong. the problem with the vehicle is that when my wife is in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag off light remains on. it works properly when i am in the seat. the service representative told me that this happens occasionally with this type vehicle and there is nothing they can do about it. this is an unacceptable response and i want this discrepancy fixed. the hyundai company prides itself on all the safety features. if they don't work properly, i would think you would do all you can to fix it. as for this service department, i will not be returning it there unless it is for warranty service. the last time i had it in for this they said they would call someone for tech assist and get back with me. i don't know if they ever contacted anyone, but i know they did not call back. below is my information: jay mckay 2006 sonata stevenson hyundai, jacksonville nc if you cannot help me with this, please forward to appropriate department, or let me know who to send it to.*jb

My husband and i rented a 2006 hyundai sonata v6 from avis car rental in kansas city, missouri while on vacation. while returning to kansas city on i-70, the car in the lane next to us blew a tire, lost control, spun in the road and hit the passenger side of our car with the front of their car, forcing us off the roadway and into the median of the interstate. i was sitting in the front passenger seat and the passenger door struck the side of my torso as it was caving in, injuring my right shoulder and neck. although hyundai advertises both side impact and side curtain airbags, neither airbag deployed in this high-speed side-impact crash, resulting in injury to my shoulder. we do not know the repair status of the rental car, but have been informed by avis that they have hired engineers to review the car and determine why the airbags did not deploy. *jb
