| PE09003 | HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY | 01/14/2009 | 04/24/2009 | STOP LAMP SWITCH FAILURE | 09V122000 | |
| By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed. | ||||||

| Driving on highway from a family event doing 65 miles an hour. experienced extreme instability. esc light came on dashboard making us think problem was electronic. continuing at a reduced speed, the car continued to dart to left. on a highway off ramp, the car darted toward the left hand guardrail, with rear tire squealing. we were still 50 miles from home. limped the car home to bring to our mechanic. we took it to firestone in ct. the mechanic put it on the lift and inspected it. found it to have extensive corrosion on the subframe in the back end. we could of been killed. he told me not to drive the car until the problem was fixed. *tr | |||

| I have a 2006 hyundai sonata 3.3. i started my car one morning and had no ecceleration in the gas peddle. i turned the car off got husband and we restarted it and had no problem. i then took a trip to houston a few weeks later and again had the problem happen to me a few times there. i did not know what to do and had to return home. i called the dealership in houston and they said it would be a minimum of $100 dollars or more to just see what was wrong. my husband said to bring it home and we will check on it. on my trip home the esc off light kept coming on and i lost acceleration while in motion on interstate 10. this happened to me many of times on the return trip home. when it went out on me, several times i had to coast to the side of the road and 3 times nearly got hit in the rear and 1 time was seriously almost rammed in the rear while on the side of the road letting the car rest before restarting it. the most terrifying moment was going over the bridge in baton rouge, la. and the esc off light kicked in and i lost acceleration and there was no side road to pull over on. i had to come to a complete stop to turn off the car and restart it 3 times before the esc off light went off and i again had acceleration. then about 20 miles outside of metairie, la. where i was heading, it started sputtering. the rpms would go down and the car would pull back, then they would jump up and the car would jerk forward. i finally made it to my destination what is normally a 4 1/2 hr drive turned in to a very stressful and fearful 8 hr drive. i did look up on google about 2006 sonata's and esc off light and found many off people having the same problem. i am putting the car in the shop tomorrow morning. i read of a woman having this problen and her car accelerating on her and plunged into a tree. this sounds to me a serious matter and seems it is going to be extremely expensive to fix when it seems to be a manufactures defect and should be fixed by hyundai. | |||

| At first it was the radio, turning on and off by itself when i would try to lower the volume it would be louder. my headlights would go out and turn on again, my emergency brake light will turn on as my car would stop in the middle of the street. air bag deployment sign is on and the bag it is not deployed. the abs, esc and other glow lights will turn on; sometimes i cant roll down the windows or lock the car with the button. now my car will not start, no power and it resets my clock. i have gone to the dealership twice and they are greedy money hungry | |||

| I received notification from my dealership that my rear disc brakes on my 2006 hyundai sonata needed to be replaced (pads, rotors). my car currently has 56k miles on it, and any car i've ever owned never need a rear brake job (pads only) before 100k miles. the front disc brake pads were just replaced in november, and during that visit the technicians stated that all brakes (after the job) were fine. additional issues with car, repaired during recall: esc light displayed on dashboard abs light displayed on dashboard airbag light displayed on dashboard *tr | |||

| That's the problem there is no serious event leading up to the problem. it is happening because theses cars are not built for safety. i have had my car for 5 months and there are some serious problems, hyundai and you all may not think so but it is. if it was your car that had all of these problems you would be complaining also. problems that i have with my hyundai sonata: passenger airbag light on every time you crank up, airbag light in the dash board on, check engine light (sensors going bad in the car). if its not equipped for the car don't try something that's going to have people spending out of the pockets and then paying for a car also. recalls on 06 hyundai sonata what's the purpose if it cant be fixed everything on the recall list is happening to my car. if i had a second chance i would not have bout that | |||

| I had noticed at first the crack in the dashboard in 2006 right after i had purchased my car. they replaced the dashboard, but not correctly the first time. when i finally got my car back, i attempted to turn the headlights in my car on, at that time all of the interior lights of my car went out. there were wires that were apparently switched. at this time i called the dealership again and informed them of the new problem. this issue was subsequently fixed. after they replaced the dashboard i started to have probelms with the driver and passenger side air bag lights going on.the turned them off and stated it was my fault. about three months later both air bag lights came on again. at this time i took it to another dealer who looked up information on the computer and stated that it must have been my fault again. someone went out to the car and shut them off but no paperwork was written up. then another 3 months later the lights came on again and there was another crack in the dashboard around the passenger side air bag. i called the original dealer again and they ordered another dashboard for the car. at this time i asked them again to check to see about the airbag lights. they have had my car for a week now (i still do not have it back). while all the air bag lights issue was happening, there is also another issue with the abs and esc (electronic stability control) lights also coming on and not going off. i have been informed the the abs and esc light was coming on because there is a braking issue with the car. and the airbag lights that keep coming on and staying on is because of a sensor issue with the passenger side seat. they are not sure why this keeps happening. they are also not sure what caused the brake issue with the abs and esc lights. *jb | |||
